  • We know that Richard Russell's security clearance gave him access to the stolen plane. But how did the ramp service worker fly it so well?
    A Horizon worker stole an empty plane from Sea-Tac Airport Friday and flew for more than an hour before crashing onto a small Pierce County island.

      Acrually, if the knee-jerk reaction push for higher security in planes runs it's course, we'll be seeing ATC capable of remote takeover of planes from rogue pilots, resulting in vulnerability to all sorts of software imperfection concerns. (Yes, I saw it layed out as a possible solution. Turn EVERY plane into a freakin drone. . . . For safety. 😂)

    You need to remove this video KING. This is garbage journalism. Instead of passive aggressive fear mongering let's talk about the real issue of the guys mental health issues.
    There is not one person commenting on here that agrees with the way you presented this story. Why? Because it's misleading and dangerous.
    Flight Sims capture the imagination of kids who want to be pilots, allow disabled people to fly who would normally never be able to, and provide a limited training experience for real and learning pilots. Additionally, many people play these games for entertainment value.
    Pull the story, drop the narrative and go do some real reporting.

      "mental health issues"
      that also sounds like another evasive argument attempting to divert the topic to something else, just like how it's stupid to blame games, it's stupid to blame "mental health issues" without looking at potential factors for inciting those issues, the dialogue he provided gave off a lot of clues and potential situational stressors that provoked what happened, throughout the dialogue Russel himself referenced his skin color and minimum wage issues, bag handling job dissatisfaction, etc among other things.
      everyone has a breaking point, just blaming something on "mental health issues" is as evasive of responsibility as blaming games.

      S730SD, it isn't Microsoft's fault. "Flight sims don't kill people; people kill people." Where have we heard that before? But they were the "enablers" and they've got deeper pockets than the Russell family or Alaska Airlines, so they're the logical target. I've enjoyed FSX over the years, but I think it's time for us all to give it up. (along with our assault rifles and other combat weaponry) As a species, we're populating ourselves away from the supper table. As the world gets ever more crowded and toxic, are you surprised we generate more crazies?

    Oh my god, now flight simulators are dangerous because one dude taught himself enough about flying to kill himself. Don't forget he also worked there and had access to the plane. Without that he would have just been another flight simulator enthusiast. I mean, I once got my fingers stuck in an electric blender trying to make fluffy French toast from a youtube video. I don't blame youtube for my unforseen French Toast disaster, I blame the dork who put his fingers where they didn't belong.

      I heard the recording and awear of that....but flying one of these i like driving a bus
      or semi truck... Just like he was freaking out about how fast he was losing fuel, Plus he was UNDER POWERING it...as the pilot was trying to help him lfy it....
      Ive witness KC130 exploded on take off or B-1 bombers fall out of the sky...just like the hotdog pilot banking the B52 too hard...
      I also did plenty of R/C aeobatics...I toss those things around with plenty of G....Ive also crashed plenty when the wing stops flying 2-3 mistales high from too much banking. not enough power ot not being able to recover from Evasive manuvers.
      I lfy R/C for many reasons....
      The model just falls out of the sky. It happens fast...and I wasnt sitting in the cockpit getting my brain spun around,,,I know enough about aviation and aerodymic. Done plenty of sim flying and even designed some....i still wont get in to fly one
      Flying is onething...if you can keep it level,..... Landing is a different story.
      As he stated....He wasnt planing landing it.

    Most ground service techs are licensed mechanic that routinely start and taxi aircraft. This incident only surprises me in that the guy could do aerobatic maneuvers with the Q400. That is difficult.

    • @brandoncaldwell95
      @brandoncaldwell95 6 років тому

      asiaexpat62 Can be doneon the simulator. Even with having to deal within its structural limits. Theres features to enact engine failure, engine fire, Loss of fuel, and gliding. There are structural limits based oer plane also within the game. Not all ground techs are mechanic nature. Most put in the steering pin or removal for the tug to manuver the aircraft around.

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 6 років тому

      asiaexpat62, If the guy had practiced these in a simulator, they are not all that hard to do. However, it is hard to do them *_PROPERLY_* ....And by that, I mean to keep the plane within its "g limits" (a barrel roll, if PROPERLY DONE, is a 1-g maneuver). If you put excessive g forces on the structure of the aircraft, it could badly damage the airframe.
      I'm literally positive that the guy simply performed the maneuver without having much skill (in terms of the maneuver being done SAFELY). It is a testament to the construction of the plane, that it withstood that, and what surprises me!! (Note that, to begin with, these planes are not even designed to perform these maneuvers in the first place - they are not categorized as aerobatic aircraft).
      Now, that said, it is still pretty stunning that he could even perform those maneuvers without a ton of actual flying experience (and that too in a complex aircraft like that). He must have had a lot of experience flying simulators, and possibly some flying lessons in actual aircraft as well (even though it's confirmed he did not have a pilot's license, no one has confirmed that he did not have previous flying lessons with an instructor).
      And besides, the Flight Simulators today (like Prepar 3D, X-plane 11 and FSX) are pretty sophisticated and quite realistic, at least as far as the flying *_procedures_* are concerned. *_Feel_* of physically handling the aircraft is still not quite real as compared to the actual aircraft.

    I meannnn, idkk if he did or didn't, but I can only assume that he did. Simply because he said he has played some video games in his life, he knew exactly what to do and how to do it, and he flew that plane wayyyy to well. He flew it better than licensed pilots in videos I've seen. Plus, I also learned how to fly a plane because of the "Flight Simulator" video game. Now, I don't know everything, but I would feel very confident that I could land a plane with hundreds of passengers if something were to happen to the pilots. I'm not saying it would be a smooth landing or even a landing on the correct runway because I'm still learning about everything. But, I am confident that i could land it without any fatalities. Their might be some injuries, but I don't think anyone would die. I also know that I have only played using an "Xbox" controller but I do have a yolk and rudder pedals I've used. But for now, the Xbox controller just allows me to learn the cockpit and where to set the speeds and flaps and all that for landing. I have landed with the yolk and pedals before, but I'm still learning everything. The "Flight Simulator" teaches you EXACTLY what any kind of plane or helicopter cockpit looks like, all the buttons and switches are interactive just like it would be in a real cockpit. It teacher you EXACTLY what to do, how to do it, and when. I honestly think it's more effective at teaching how to identify the buttons and switches of a cockpit and how to operate a plane or helicopter than an instructor could in a classroom. It's more hands on and you can teach yourself at your own pace regardless of how quick or slow that may be. You can learn on your own time and don't have to work any classes into a busy schedule. Not to mention, the game is WAYYYYYY cheaper than going to school. You can buy and own the game anywhere from roughly like, 50$-120.00$. Depending on what edition you want. The cheaper versions don't come with a lot of planes unlocked and you have to play the game to unlock them, or you can just buy it for 120ish dollars and have everything already unlocked. Regardless, it's wayyyy more convenient and wayyyy more cheaper than going to school...

  • @MrSupercar55
    @MrSupercar55 3 роки тому +3

    So, because the “plane thief” learned to fly with a flight simulator, these software packages are now dangerous? Pilots use these things as part of their training, and then there’s the hobbyists such as myself who may very well never set foot in the cockpit in reality. Now, imagine if someone who had been using a flight simulator software package had managed to land a plane full of passengers after the pilot fell unconscious or got sucked out during an explosive decompression. Then these mainstream media tossers would change their tune for sure. I personally think stories like this are just the media making a mountain out of a molehill.

    If he was flying the default then he definitely isn't getting all he needs to know to fly the real plane.I remember when 9/11 happened, they started up with this talk about banning flight sims and then they did it again when 370 went missing. The bottom line is some people are messed up and no amount of banning is going to stop it.

      If you don't care about dying, you can try anything and it may work out, or it may not. Also, the Q400 is an absolute hotrod when it's empty, so it would actually be pretty easy to do a lot of what he did without difficulty.

    • @samuellittle1286
      @samuellittle1286 6 років тому +2

      “Actually, he did half an aleron roll, followed by a split s...with a rolling recovery. A split s is a dangerous maneuver in that aircraft if you don’t pull the power back, speed picks up quickly while going straight down. It will rip the wings off if you red line the airframe and push too many g’s when recovering. And that aircraft was going straight down for a long time. Not something a “never a pilot” person could do. Take it to the bank” - anonymous
      I copied this text from another page
      What are ur thoughts on this? It sounded legit to me, however I am not a pilot.

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 6 років тому

      Why would he care about the wings being ripped off? He probably also had alarms blaring at him the whole time to pull up and telling him that he was over speed. Yes, he was lucky that he didn't cause a complete failure of the airframe, but that's also something that you learn how to avoid in Flight Sim.

    • @samuellittle1286
      @samuellittle1286 6 років тому +1

      Apparently, that maneuver isn’t done by simply pulling back on the yoke? I’m not saying ur wrong, this guy was pulling off maneuvers that an experienced pilot said were fairly difficult. It was just a thought.
      I take the media’s official story with a grain of salt:
      www.reddit.com/r/greatawakening/comments/96ptjo/heres_more_proof_the_fakenews_is_scripted/?st=JKTD57FR&sh=847850a6

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 6 років тому +1

      He was just screwing around with the controls, having fun, that's how aerobatics were born. The difficulty comes with knowing how to do the maneuvers safely, and this guy wasn't interested in safety, he just got lucky.
      Why would the media lie about this, what would be the motive?

    The last thing we need in the aviation industry is a mainstream media demonizing flight simulation software. Especially we're in a time where aviation needs pilots for corporate and commercial transport. The only saving grace after watching this video was the private pilot featured saying affectively, that I need this to help me become a better pilot. Everything has a upside in the downside, that is just life. Sorry, I had a laugh when the news organization reached out to Microsoft for comment.
    Microsoft has been out of the flight simulation community for a long time now. They felt it was no longer profitable and dump the brand roughly 2010 or so. For the researchers for King 5 news organization. You only have two choices left the which is X-Plane or Prepared 3D (Lockheed Martin) for general aviation. Anything else is just a game

    Sometimes you’re just done with life. Suicide is not as bad as people make it out to be. My little brother killed himself a decade ago and it changed my whole view on the topic. If you feel as if everyday is a true struggle… rather it be financially or health wise then sometimes death is true peace. And since not all of us are religious then choose the best way to leave this planet. And this guy chose an awesome way out!! True legend.

    It doesn’t teach you anything. It allows you to practice and build motor skills but you still have to learn for yourself. Yes they have tutorials but they don’t cover complex aircraft or the step by step methods to start a plane. It’s just a button (Ctrl + E)

    • @brandoncaldwell95
      @brandoncaldwell95 6 років тому +1

      Eric Gentry Yes and no. You have the option and can read up on it. The game has the ablility to use manual starting features than a simple control E. I have done it with cessna and the cessna caravan but not a turbo prop. The game does show the switches that are turned when using control E.

    • @brandoncaldwell95

      Eric Gentry Does it really matter? The guy wanted to get off the ground and have fun before killing himself. He had a limited window and he took it. Afterall, he was a grounds man. He talks to pilots, and mechanics especially being a tug operator. He knew what he was doing and he morenhan likly read up on how it was done. Hell, as i stated. I can start a cessna even with a dead battery. Doesnt take a genious to learn how.

    • @graciejiujitsu86
      @graciejiujitsu86 6 років тому

      Eric Gentry not the default aircraft however many payware aircraft do and come with manuals and simulate hot and cold start ups. X-Plane 11 is even more sophisticated where many of their default aircraft do simulate even more realistic start up procedures.

    • @ericlanegen
      @ericlanegen 6 років тому

      JiuJitsu Pilot86 yes you are right that Payware will simulate further but that is the payware manipulating the simulation to not start until all the conditions are meet within the 3rd party software (look up Project Magenta’s PMsystems). It is still on the individual to learn. The flight sim doesn’t replace a flight instructor.
