    Explaining the chords he is using - so you can use them for yourself
    There are so many ways to harmonize a melody. And it seems all the great players have found their own way of just doing that.
    And I really like to dig deep. I don´t want to play the transcription of a song and NOT know what´s going on. I want to understand what´s going on harmonically, melodically ....
    and i want to know how i can use my new knowledge for my own guitar playing.
    Let´s have a look what Julian Lage is doing here.
    I´ll be talking about NOT playing all the chords. There´ll be some analysing of chords. (that he IS playing). And demonstrations of super beautiful chords.

    her smile on 1:24 after nailing the arpegio reminds me how satisfying is to learn such a difficult and incredibly beautiful song! Amazing lesson! I guess i watched more than 100 times by now hahahaha

      I don't think it's the nailing the arpeggio part that makes here smile. I think it's how the music resolves and that she understands the function of the chords that makes her smile. Some people would refer to this as "feeling", but music is based on functions, not on feelings.

    I just missed Julian play in my town (Vancouver BC), and then I found your video. Love your deep knowledge of chord structure and theory, but also the joy that you get out of the treasures inherent in music. You've managed to inspire a jaded music veteran like myself. Thanks so much. I'm definitely going to check out more of your stuff.

    Wonderful lesson, thank you! In the voice leading passage you wrote as F#/A# Bm A/C# D? F7 E7, it's actually just a ii V (Bm7 E7) with extra steps. This is a great lesson in how to extend a 2-5-1 with secondary dominants. The A/C# is a secondary dominant of Bm! A7 is the bVII7 of B (the relative minor of D). The next tritone could be either F7 or B7 so you could think of the whole thing as F#7 Bm7 A7 Bm7 B7 E7. Putting the secondary dominants in parenthesis, in roman numerals it's (V7/ii) ii (bVII7/ii) ii (V7/V) V7. Both chords are prepared with a secondary dominant, one of them twice!
    Another way to look at it is that he is basically walking up root and third of Bm with first inversion (secondary) dominant passing chords containing the leading tone to the next chord tone (A# to B, C# to D) in the bass, outlining each chord with shells in the middle strings (typically 3 and 7), and putting a nice melody on top. The ii7 II7 in first inversion gives a nice chromatic bass movement and another leading tone in the bass (D# to E).Your viewers could practice this by practicing the shells first, keeping the fourth finger and top strings free for melody notes, and then adding the melody on top.

      @reinh Рік тому

      Another thing your viewers could practice is to take a target chord (e.g., Bm7/D, a.k.a. D6) and try every voicing you can think of with a bass note a half-step below (C#) that resolves up a half step. So to work from Julian's voicing, that could be A7 in first inversion (x4x22x or x4x255), F#7 in second inversion (x4x322 or x4x352), C#dim (x4x353), C#m7b5 (rootless A9, x4x453), Aadd9/C# (x4x455), or even C13b9 with the b9 in the bass (fourth inversion (!), x4x355, a.k.a. F#7#9/C#), etc. Julian also likes more sparse voicings so he might just play a tenth (x4xx5x) to outline the chord like he does in Darn That Dream.
      I love this passage because it gives a lot of insight into how Julian thinks (for example he is comfortable with both "frontdoor" and backdoor secondary dominants, he seems to work more with intervals than "grips") and by analyzing it you can turn it into a system that you can use to find your own voice(ings).

      thank you very much! the secondary dominants make lot of sense to me!😊all the best to you tina

      @reinh Рік тому

      @@tinajackel You're welcome! One thing I learned from this is that the bVII7 contains the leading tone to the 3rd of i (or, in this case, ii) because of that relative minor relationship between B and D: the backdoor dominant is the V of III. Very useful when coming up with chromatic bass movements for minor target chords!

    Maybe at around 10:30 when you talk about the three strings that keep ringing giving an Em 'feel' - that is a kind of 'signature'. Then Emily (Em) is constantly ringing in the ears, like a 'haunting'. A bit like when Bach used the notes BACH in his pieces, or Shostakovich used the notes DSCH as a motif. So Emily, the subject of the song, is right at the heart of the piece - her name is written through it.

    At around 6:40 you asked 'what's going on there?' I'm not sure, but I think it's like a turnaround within a turnaround. He's taken a turnaround from classical guitar and inserted it within a jazz turnaround, that's my guess.

    • @adriansaunders5313
      @adriansaunders5313 Місяць тому

      Eh? That's one of the easier ones! I do play it with the full barre though, just don't play the bottom string. We all have different shaped hands, do the chord however suits you. As long as you are playing the same notes, and as long as your own way doesn't make for an awkward transition to the next chord/notes. You will notice from the video that Tina plays some of the chords differently to Julian, to suit her own hands. And she also says no-one has to do this exactly the same as Julian.
