Remember people. The JLA fell apart and Tim Drake’s father was murdered. Because a woman thought an elaborate attack on several people was a better idea to get her husband back and than just CALLING HIM AND ASKING IF HE WANTED TO TAKE ANOTHER SHOT!
The problem is that: (1) Jean was the reason that their marriage broke up because she cheated on Ray (The Atom and her ex-husband), and (2) Jean has been shown to be mentally unstable. Because of the cheating, Ray went to the Amazon and disappeared for a time to get over his divorce and was trapped there for a time. Due to that she came up with an elaborate plan to bring Ray Palmer back to her. By killing Sue, it caused all of the heroes to get closer to their loved ones (her reason for giving Tim Drake's father a gun, she thought Drake would kill Captain Boomerang and not get killed himself), including bringing Ray back to her due to his lingering feelings for her.

He started out as someone who was able to single-handedly take on the Justice League and win. In one case, he trapped all of the Justice League members, putting each one in a custom-made death trap. The only reason they survived is because Superman and Batman traded costumes so Light sent them to the wrong deathtrap. From those beginnings, Light became more and more of a loser and a joke, eventually reaching the point where he couldn't even defeat ordinary school children. It got so bad that even Hell didn't want him and would kick him out. However, once he regained his mind he became a dangerous threat. He captured Green Arrow (one of those who approved altering his mind) and challenged the Teen Titans to face him, otherwise he would kill Green Arrow. The Titans went in, thinking it would be an easy fight...it wasn't. He defeated the current team, and then the Reserves came in. It took over 2 dozen Teen Titans to take him down. Even though he lost, he said he won because of how hard it was to take him down and showed that he was no longer a joke.

In "52", was part of his journey to bring Sue back to life, Ralph encountered The Spectre. The Spectre offered to bring Sue back to life if Ralph would punish his wife's murderer. To that end, The Spectre gave him unlimited power to punish Jean. Ralph took Jean to the past to the time when she killed Sue, restored Jean's sanity, and was going to put her in an eternal time loop where Jean would watch herself kill Sue over and over again for the rest of eternity. Poor Ralph, He doesnt deserve this. My first introduction to Elongated man was from Justice League Unlimited where I saw very little of him and never even knew his name until his second appearance with Booster Gold, and couple episodes of Batman Brave and the Bold. However I got thoroughly introduced to the character in CWs The Flash and he is one of my favorite characters in the whole Arrow-verse because he started off as such a duche bag and evolved into one of the most Gold Hearted Self sacrificing person in the show. I've never read the comics but I assume he's just like that in that medium. So to hear this happening to him really has me in tears even as I'm writing this.
My friend like a baby over this story because Sue what is one of my favorite people in the comics. I love the way they made her into a complete badass in the Arrowverse.
Yeah bullcrap. Identity Crisis was a follow up to Countdown which was utter garbage. Versus 52 that happened after this and was amazing. Even stuff leading into Final Crisis was only okay. Like always comics is a series of good to eh stories in a cycle even.
Everyone involved in this book at DC, from the concept to pushing it along to getting it on shelves, should be ashamed. This was an absolutely horrendous story that did nothing positive for any of the characters. A complete misfire from start to finish.
When he’s attempting to give the eulogy and can’t keep his face together, that brought me to tears as a kid reading it. One of the greatest mini series ever.
I like hearing you cover identity crisis. It was the first “dc crisis event” I ever read. My dad told me it was a real controversial one, but a really good one. Can’t say I disagree with him. It’s a tough read, though.
The final panel actually hints that her spirit is there and talking back to him. Look at the speech bubbles on the last page. It starts out with the direction part coming from the left side of the panels coming out of Ralph's mouth. The final words are spoken by either her or both them as the speech bubble comes from the middle of the bed with no direction indicator. "I love you, too." is a response or there would be no need for ",too".
Yeah this was a BIIIIG deal at the time. They were a great couple and her character was constructed to be very sweet and virtuous. That panel is iconic
She made it appear that people related to Justice League members were being attacked. She even faked an attack on herself. Because of this Atom spent a lot more time with her she could use to get in his head.
I just looked this up. The Atom's wife used his tech to shrink down and enter Sues body. During the process Sue had a cereberal infarction and died. The Atom's wife then burned Sues body to try and cover it up. What her plan was exactly after entering sues body, idk. But there ya go, the little blurb from googling this.
@@fangfactory1 Adding on to what you said here, which is accurate, her plan was to injure Sue only. She wanted to get back with Atom, and one thing that always brought the various Justice League members closer to their families was when one of the family members was hurt in the past. Killing her was an accident, but had the effect she was hoping for until Atom figured out the truth. This also led to one of my favorite Batman detective moments when they were all putting the pieces together separately: Batman posed a question of "Who benefits when a JL'ers family member is hurt? Answer: The family members of all the other JL'ers". Jean went completely coo-coo once she was found out and later became the new Eclipso as well.
Right. Also, Jean Loring said she shrunk some other weapons to bring with her just in case, and one of them just happened to be a flamethrower (which she used to burn Sue’s body to cover up her actual cause of death); which I think we can all agree was overkill in her plan to “just injure her”.
Not a big fan of this story for so many reasons. But, focusing purely on this short's subject. The Ending. What gets me is that last word bubble. "I love you too." It's closed off. So, you could read it as Ralph speaking out loud or even Sue responding from beyond. One more time. Breaks my heart.
So, Sue’s death kicked off a huge investigation and part of it was led by Batman, who had a weird feeling the whole time. It turned out that part of the thing that caused it all was that a villain named Dr. Light did something horrible to the spouse of a League member. Some members of the League decided to erase Dr. Light’s memory so he couldn’t remember the identity of the spouse (he stumbled across them when gaining access to their satellite HQ) and to prevent the trauma to the spouse. Batman was adamantly against this, and they erased his memory, too. It later came out that they may or may not have used this technique when other villains discovered a secret ID, and even on eachother when they no longer wanted any part of it.
@@cooldude2027 It has been established that anyone can use The Atom's technology to shrink. The limitation is that, with the exception of The Atom, anyone who uses it will explode if they remain small for too long (if that starts to occur they must return to full size immediately).
Yeah but in the comic he was told to have these conversations with Sue to help with his grieving it had helped other members who had lost somebody to talk to them as if they were still there. Don't get me wrong it's still very sad but he's not delusional grieving kind of state. At least that's what the video implies that he was in that kind of a state by the end. He was just doing his own grief counseling so to speak
I mean fair to Ralph there. I know fairly well that I'd just go fully off the edge if my wife passes before I do. We don't have any kids, and her sister would take in our pets so no one for me to really neglect at that point. I promised my wife I wouldn't hurt myself, but at that point I think I would just do what I want and see what happens as far as consequences. Not much on this side to look forward to if she isn't here.

This was like the first DC comic that made me cry
This was just a vulgar comic. What they did to Ralph and Sue was sickening.
Beautiful and touching story. I loved it and wish comics were still this good
Yeah bullcrap. Identity Crisis was a follow up to Countdown which was utter garbage. Versus 52 that happened after this and was amazing. Even stuff leading into Final Crisis was only okay. Like always comics is a series of good to eh stories in a cycle even.
That last part is what really sells it to me
Everyone involved in this book at DC, from the concept to pushing it along to getting it on shelves, should be ashamed. This was an absolutely horrendous story that did nothing positive for any of the characters. A complete misfire from start to finish.
When he’s attempting to give the eulogy and can’t keep his face together, that brought me to tears as a kid reading it. One of the greatest mini series ever.
Damm this is messed up not the most mess up thing tue justice league has done
Bro i started loving ralph due to his character in the flash tv show and i feel like comic wise hes been done dirty and seconded to plastic man
Ralph and Sue really got the worst possible one two punch with Dr Light and Jean
At least they got to be adorable ghost detectives for a while once he caught up with her.
I like hearing you cover identity crisis. It was the first “dc crisis event” I ever read. My dad told me it was a real controversial one, but a really good one. Can’t say I disagree with him. It’s a tough read, though.
I just realized Ralph Dibney and Reed Richards wives are named Sue.
He didn't deserve any of this 😔
Awesome storytelling in this series. It's one of my favorites.
This was such a great story dc needs to utilize characters elongated man, question, or ted kord and booster gold more often
Great?
This was a great story line, there was a lot of great scenes where the heroes come together to find the killer of one of their own.
Awesome read!!
I remember when they came back from the dead, being my favorite use of their characters.
The whole run is basically, “Hell hath no fury, like a woman scorned”.
Read this back in high school, just after reading Blackest Night. I became a DC fan right after.
Poor flongated man oh shoot I mean elongated! My inner Young Justice almost came there😰
Even in the TV show adaptation, he was under appreciated
I gotta say, you're doing a good job with this content. Very interesting topics with a nice format, keep it up man 👍
Facts. Broke my heart... 💔
I remeber reading this, this made me so sad man.
Not to mention how the Atom responded in the end.
Remember when Marvel made fun of DC's identity crisis with a "what if" story where The Thing's aunt Petunia gets murdered
The only thing Elastic Man can’t stretch is the hole in his heart 😢
Man that last bit actually had me choking up.
I like when comics trest heroes as people and not objects
Yeah this was a BIIIIG deal at the time. They were a great couple and her character was constructed to be very sweet and virtuous. That panel is iconic
How did atom's ex wife use sue as leverage
She made it appear that people related to Justice League members were being attacked. She even faked an attack on herself. Because of this Atom spent a lot more time with her she could use to get in his head.
I just looked this up. The Atom's wife used his tech to shrink down and enter Sues body. During the process Sue had a cereberal infarction and died.
The Atom's wife then burned Sues body to try and cover it up.
What her plan was exactly after entering sues body, idk. But there ya go, the little blurb from googling this.
@@fangfactory1 never stick it in crazy chat
Wow
That actually broke my heart
Man that hit the feelers
Truly heartbreaking.
Damn it man I actually cried 😢
Identity Crisis was superior, in writing and art, to anything out there at the time. It brought me back to comics after decades .
These youtube videos got me crying for characters I didn't know existed
Not a big fan of this story for so many reasons. But, focusing purely on this short's subject. The Ending. What gets me is that last word bubble. "I love you too." It's closed off. So, you could read it as Ralph speaking out loud or even Sue responding from beyond. One more time. Breaks my heart.
Rest In Peace King 👑
Wait why does the league trust each other over a different person doing something wrong
There was a bit more going on in Identity Crisis, this was just what kicked off the plot
Not letting go is how you lose yourself
Idc what anyone says this will forever be one of my favorite trade paperbacks I've ever read
my soup was salty enough, now it's too salty..
Should the Atom be arrested?
No, he wasn’t the culprit, it was his ex wife
@@cooldude2027 It has been established that anyone can use The Atom's technology to shrink. The limitation is that, with the exception of The Atom, anyone who uses it will explode if they remain small for too long (if that starts to occur they must return to full size immediately).
The Atom did it!
I remember seeing this on UA-cam years ago… I wasn’t too sure what the context was prior but it’s still sucks
he ends up being a jhon constantine like badass in a crisis and defeats the demon malice
I didn’t think dc got this dark, until I read both speedy’s addiction issues and identity crisis cause holy sh&t
Sue is one of the most tragic DC characters ever. Got raped then killed while being pregnant
Out of anyone you can fuck with you choose elastic man?!!!! Do they forget bro is an apocalyptic level threat?
The aftermath of this story is crazy. Dibney's story is so sad.
That’s sad
The Atom’s game must have been unreal.
The first time I saw elongated man was him ripping hawkman's heart out...
The loss of a spouse is extremely difficult
Stretchy comic book characters really fall head over heels for women named Sue.
Definitely not more depressing than holding her dead body next to a pregnancy test or Tim Drake frantically tugging at a boomerang in his dead father’s chest.
It is the utter betrayal and how unnecessary these deaths were.
Imagine a doctor finding footprints on your brain
That's cold
Yea who isnt underrated nowadays? Everyone literally. FYi, when everyone is underrated, no one really is.
It gets worse when Ralph and Sue were brought back as Black Lanterns.
I can think in at least 10 moments more depressing than this one
People really nees to oversell so much bs
Call it "one depressing moment".. thats it
