  • DIY Custom Bifold Closet Doors made with glass panels! Yes you can! Watch this “how to build bifold closet doors” video and I’ll show you how we built our doors from scratch. These three panel doors have wooden recessed panels on the bottom and recessed glass panels at the top. In this video I show you how to make custom bifold doors from scratch!
These doors were constructed using 1x6 primed pine lumber. The hardware kit was from National Hardware (N343-731 391D). The glass used was from a local glass shop and was 1/4 inch glass. Our bottom panels are made from 1/4 inch plywood.
At the very end of this video you will find the building plans we used with all of the measurements.
    Cost break down:
8 glass panels custom cut $130
    8 1x6x8 primed pine $139
    4’ x 4’ 1/4” plywood $14
    Door Hardware kit $19
    Wood glue $5
    Paint from previous project. $0

I appreciate the comment! I feel like this video got a little long-winded but building something without any plans requires a lot of explaining lol.

Fred, your video has great information on how to make some solid looking bi-fold doors. When I read the comments, I saw that there were only 10 - which surprised me - but then I recalled what I first thought when I saw the title "How To Make Bifold Closet Doors With Glass Panels" - I thought, I'm not interested in using glass, but I liked the look of the doors, so I decided to see what else you had to show - and I'm glad that I did.
As it turns out, you show how to insert 1/4" plywood panels as well as glass, and were "wood" also in the title, it might likely increase the number of viewers. So, someone could simply increase the amount of wood (3 x 4' x 4' 1/4" plywood), not use any glass at all, and make a shaker-like, double-thickness door.
Your costing of the project also helps a lot, but it appears that you left out the cost of the pine glass bead moulding (unless you already had this lying around).
The plan details are very helpful - thanks - and your description of the lumber used is also very helpful. Many similar videos don't address the question of lumber used at all, other than to say "lumber of your choice".
At 9:53 in the video you say that you are using 1/2" 16 GA brad nails to pin the plywood and the glass into the panel openings; would I be wrong in assuming you meant 18 GA nails?
Last thing: how are the doors holding up in terms of (a) weight wear on the hinge hardware, (b) durability of the track hardware, and (c) straightness and durability of the doors themselves due to the double thickness?

Thanks for the great insights and thank you for watching. First off these doors are holding up just fine and 18GA is the nail size. The doors are in Fred Jr’s house and we built them because we couldn’t find door to purchase that looked like these with glass. Making these doors in other variants as you suggest is a wonderful idea. With a few minor changes one could easily create a custom look to match other situations. After reading your comment, I spent some time rewatching this video and the thought occurred to me that perhaps folks would not have the courage to build doors like these in their driveway. This video shows that it is possible!

[... the thought occurred to me that perhaps folks would not have the courage to build doors like these in their driveway ... ]. Hehe. You are right, there. Your details, humor, and delivery are spot on. I also watched your replacement of the sliding patio door which, because of the stucco, was at least a notch above the norm, challenge-wise. But you handled it well. Many thanks again for the excellent videos.
