Soo beautifully well explained
Thank you! We spend a lot of time trying to think about how to talk about all this! Glad you liked it
They are beautiful, but I can't provide any direct sunlight. I use grow lights. Which succulents would do best under a grow light, and how much light do they need?
Our indoor succulent video has some tips about which ones work best indoors, which also applies to grow lights. ua-cam.com/video/NYstI9x1XqE/v-deo.html
A 20 plus year old and very large Crassula suddenly developed mealy bugs and every treatment option failed. Any ideas why? It had thrived for so long in the light, watering schedule, and air circulation. I eventually discarded it so as to prevent the spread of mealy bugs to my collection.
We're so sorry to hear that! Extensive mealybug infestations can be hard to treat, especially on a large plant with lots of nooks and crannies in which they can hide. It can take daily drenchings with isopropyl alcohol to deal with widespread infestations, and even then any bugs you missed will keep multiplying. Sounds like you made the right choice in protecting the rest of your collection.
I have an extensive indoor succulent garden. I am constantly battling mealy bugs. I just threw out two struggling hanging plants because I just couldn't get rid of the darn bugs. BUT I also learned that depending on the plant, I can win some of these battles.
I make sure the plant is dry and then remove it from the pot. I spray the entire plant with a mixture of water and alcohol (anywhere from 30/70 alcohol/water to 50/50, depending on the plant), till it's soaking wet. I include the roots and around the base of the plant. I make sure I get under everything, into every crack and crevice. I wait for a minute or so and then run tepid water over the entire plant to rinse away the alcohol, especially around the roots and base of the plant. Meanwhile, most of the bugs should be dead (hopefully all of them).
I leave the soaked plant alone for a couple/few days to fully dry out, and then put fresh soil into a sterilized pot and replant it. Then I cover the soil with a sprinkling of food-grade diatomaceous earth, which appears to work quite well to keep out the bugs (food grade because of my pets).
Most Crassula seem to not be affected by the alcohol if I rinse it off within a minute or two, and I have completely eliminated mealy bugs from a few of my plants with this method. I'm no garden specialist. I've just found something that's helpful for me, and hopefully maybe somebody else, too. Happy gardening! 😊🌼🍀
Can I use the Jack's Gritty Mix for these?
You definitely can! It's our go to when potting up Crassula for indoor growing.
@@Mountaincrestgardens thank you so much! Trying my hand at succulents here in Maine!!

Glad you like it!
How about polinating them.are they self fertile?
In general, Crassula are not self-fertile so you would need to use something like a paintbrush to gently transfer pollen from one flower to another. After successful pollination, here's a great guide to germinating Crassula from seed: unusualseeds.net/how-to-grow-crassula-from-seeds/
@@Mountaincrestgardens done that...some hibridization....hope everything comes out ok.
Thank you
