Thank you for your insight. I was almost ready to take my vehicle to my mechanic to check out why my sunroof wouldn't close, but after doing exactly what you said in your video, my sunroof now working the way it should be. Thank you again!
Nice! Check the other links in the description, I have one on where to lube the rear seal so it doesn't stick and make it break. I'd also be listening out for any pops/cracks when operating it and cease using if you hear any so it won't break even worse.
Tried the same steps reading them but it didn’t click till your video. Just returned from our first camping trip with our first F350 and having the one touch available for the next trip already has a smile on my face. Thank you.
I did the first track replacement around here on a 15 F-150. I did it in the evening at a dealership that stayed open until 9. Finished about 8:30 and started trying to program it. I know I was tired, but I could not get the timing right to make it program. Gave up and went home, came back next morning and got it the first time. I want to thank you for the video. I work at a Ford dealership and have watched your video at least 4 times 😂. Every time I do a vista roof once I’m done I come to watch the video. I’ve shared it with everyone in the shop and even a couple customers
No problem that's why I put it up there. I know this one by heart, but sometimes when I do an Explorer or an Escape for something I have to go watch my own video to remember how to do it, LOL.
Thank you for this video!! I replaced the broken arms on my wife's 2018 expedition yesterday. I followed all of your steps to align and reprogram. Back to new! Total cost was $164.
You just saved me over $600 dollars. My dealership replaced the tracks under warrenty but the sun shade would only shut half way so I was afraid to try the sunroof for fear it would get stuck open. Took it back and they saud "their diagnostics" say it has a faulty switch in the overhead console. Cost for new console was over $600 plus installation. I took the console apart and all looked good to me. Then remembered I saw your video a while back so I gave it a try. Majically the "fault switch" came back to life and all is good with the sunroof and sunshade. Thanks
Glad it worked. This procedure is supposed to be done anytime you do ANY repair to the sunroof. Also as part of the diagnostics...it's like one of the first things it has you do.
Lol I asked 3 different dealers and 2 techs and they said it’s just a pain in the butt and gotta tear it apart or deal with the 1 inch gap in my shade cover. So a year later I found this and now my visor shuts all the way again!!!!!!! Thank you!
After a battery change, the one touch was not working.. Watched your video, and reprogrammed following your steps. It works perfectly once again. Thank you for posting this!

You’re a life saver. I’ve watched this video 3 times now because 3 times my sunroof stays open and I can’t close it but this works every time. Thank you.
Your video's are awesome. I was able to replace the ramps and reset the sunroof and shade using your video's. BTW, the driver's door has to be closed to reset the sunroof. Everything worked great, until I installed the accordian covers. I then got the opportunity to learn that the motor closing operation will stop and take the sunroof all the way back to full open if something is causing the closing motor to work harder than it is supposed to. Had a heart attack, then decided to remove the accoridan covers just in case those were causing the problem. The sunroof closed as it had before. So, I decided I dont really need those accordian covers on there anyway. Thank you for putting these videos online.
It doesn't need them. All they do is cover up the greasy stuff and keep you from sticking your fingers in the mechanism and getting injured. If you have enough sense to not do that, they're unnecessary.
I have the same issue as yours that it would almost close and then went back all the way to open. I took those two rubbers out of the way and it closed good . Ford sucks!!

So far my fav video on UA-cam - not only did I impress the hell out of myself, but your directions were spot on - thanks for saving me a troubled evening. I was going to tape trash bags over the partially closed moon roof because it was the best I could do - until this. Rain tonight too - thank you thank you thank you!
Glad to help! Be aware that your lift arms are probably coming apart and are the reason the roof wouldn't close, so I'd curtail use of it until I had it checked. It might get stuck badly enough that this procedure won't work.
I did this then pressed down on the corner of my sunroof when it stuck. Once it was open I lubricated it and now it works. Chris Mathews Ford in Newark, Ohio said it would cost $1,000 to fix. Thank you.
You sir are a true champ. Thank you very much for your videos. My glass was stuck in the open position so I had to do a lot of adjusting to make everything work again with the new guides. After I was done is when I realized that it wasn’t closing correctly. After some searching I found your video online and you saved the day. Thank you brother for your time and knowledge.
You're a lifesaver! Just got my truck back from the dealership because they wanted to charge me $2,600. I've been watching your videos and I'm already on track (pun intended)!
Thank you so much. I had my truck into the dealership for tailgate actuator recall (open while going down the road, harness repair). After taking 3 weeks to schedule so they had the parts, they kept it a week to repair. Upon pickup, they informed me the actuator was weak and needs to be replaced soon ($300). Now it didn’t open at all. I got so frustrated, I ordered the tailgate actuator myself and 20 minute install and now it works. On the drive home, I noticed the moonroof was open halfway. It wouldn’t close, only open all the way and back to halfway. Also sunroof didn’t vent or open. I was so irritated with Edwards Ford in Wahalla, SC. I called to tell them and they could get to it in a week on Thursday. I dropped off 8 am on Thursday and they explained could be a long job because headliner would have to come out, etc. I stopped by Friday afternoon to get a tool I left in the truck and they haven’t even touched it. I left with the truck unrepaired. I found your video 2 days later and it was so informative and it worked like a charm. Thank you. Thank you. What weasels at the dealership.
This has been the most informative and helpful video ever! I’m in tears bc this 90k doesn’t have a working sunroof , and this video made it happen for me! Thank you!
Thank you! I already had a problem last year with the plastic piece that snapped off in the track. I got it cleared out and got it closed but today I decided to open it and it wouldn’t even open. This reset the whole thing and now works like butter! Huge help! Sunroof repair and diagnostics is already spendy and this saved me a load! Thank you again!
Thank you so much for the demonstration! I read the bulletin, followed the instructions, and wasn't working until I found this video and followed along.
Glad to hear it! Yep, first one I did years ago, I tried and tried and couldn't get the timing right. So once I got it, I made a video since a visual would have helped me.
Thank you for posting this video. It worked amazing. I was worried when the shade was not responding, I thought the motor went bad but after trying this, all the controls worked !
I was also stressed about my new ford raptor with low miles not closing correctly 😟 I was gonna break it already cause I was mad then this video shows up to make it act new
Thank you!!! The battery was replaced at the last service for my 2018 Lincoln Navigator. Today I open the moonroof and it wouldn’t close all the way. I thought something was broken but tried to reset the sunroof using your instructions and it works like a charm!! It’s the exact same setup at the F150 with the two-step shades.
Thank you so much for posting this video. My F150 sunroof started acting erratically. I followed your steps to re-initialize my sunroof and now it works like new. Thank you again as you are doing us a great service.
Keep an eye on the operation, and listen to it as it moves. Also lube the seal between the two windows. I have a videos of where to lube it, and of what else goes wrong with them.
Thank you so much for making this video, this really saved my $1700 as my shade was not responding this morning and i end up going to dealership and they suggest me to have new motor gave me the quotation of fixing it.. but i passed it off and looking for something else on google and came across to your video.. it really helps, it works.. thank you🙏
I appreciate the post! My sunshade wasn’t fully closing so I reset the whole thing and now it closes. It was getting killer with the sun on black leather!!
Great video…my sunroof wouldn’t open and I used your initialization technique. Worked like a charm! Awesome. Thanks for information. Probably saved me hundreds of dollars…
Pacfanweb, thank you for making this video. Last night, my sunroof got stuck with the shade halfway and wouldn't vent. Then, it wouldn't do anything but instead moved like 1/4" and seemed to be stuck on something (I speculated broken plastic parts or debris/bends in the track). Anyway, I did this and it did it's thing. Almost brought tears to my eyes... I was giving it a shot before going up to the dealer but you saved me from being ripped off big time!
Glad it helped! Your guide arms are likely coming apart. I would stop using it until you get it fixed, or it might well get jammed open and you won't be able to shut it.
Funny (not funny) enough, I set the cover halfway back and vented the moving glass and it got stuck again. Tried a handful of times to reset it and it is acting like it did the previous night. Maybe tomorrow morning, it'll reset correctly. I just hope it doesn't rain in Houston... I'm an idiot. Next time, if it actually works again, I'll definitely not mess around with it again until it can be fixed. Edit: It's worth noting that this technique seems to only work once after the truck is locked, unlocked, acc or ignition, then pressing all the buttons. In my case, the glass makes a plasticy cracking noise, the cover closes, and while the button is still pressed will retract all the way and stay that way. Repeating these steps ends in the same scenario, where the cover is all the way back.
When the glass gets all the way back, release and repress the button quickly. And yes, it only works once, right after you turn it on. You can't start the programming again without turning it off and back on.
Literally spent 3 hours messing around with it at my office parking garage until it seated fully. Won't be messing around with it anymore other than moving the cover. It's worth noting that only the passenger side was getting stuck on something and seems to be related to that thing that looks like a screw binding post (that moves in the squiggly track) since it almost never fully travels from one end to the other, which also seems to be the case on the driver side. The post is sticking out further on the driver side than the passenger side. Also, I was eventually able after greasing everything up to get the glass to go all the way back and forward (not flush though) and saw that long, flat plastic thing that the rubber boot attaches to get bent out of shape with the glass all the way back, which only happened on the passenger side. Yea that's a lot of crap but maybe someone can benefit from my confusion.
Thank you, this was so informative! I can only imagine how much money you’ve saved so many people from having to take their vehicles in to get serviced! I will need to try this out to see if it fixes ours!!
Wasn't experiencing issues with the opening or closing of the glass. My issue was the shade not closing all the way. Followed your video and it works now. Sad thing is that I took it to my Ford dealership and they couldn't figure it out. Thanks for your work and video of this.
Thank you! My moon roof shade slowly over time seemed to have crept back from fully closed and couldn't figure out why. A small sliver of light would shine through. This reset the shade home position. Greatly appreciated!
Thank you Sir! Was just about to take it into the dealership because it was popping open into the vent position when it should be closed all the way. Followed your video and now it’s fixed! You just saved me a trip and at least $450 bucks. Much appreciated, great video!👊
Dude!!! You saved me about $1200 - THANK YOU!!! Replaced both arms on my ‘18 F150 pano roof with your other video and reset it with this one. Flawless exercise start to finish!
Thank you so much brother, I live in French I had problem sunroof it was not open your tutorial help me a lot ,I did exactly what you show in the video it works very well on my car Ford Kuga 2018 ,thank you again and again
Thanks for this! Managed to close my stuck roof doing this. Think I’ve got a bad track, so will still take it in for service, but at least I can secure the truck now. Cheers.
Just don't use it again. Will likely get stuck. They make replacement parts now. I did a video on how to do that as well. Much cheaper and easier than an entire track.
My sunroof is not doing what everyone else’s seems to be. Before and after replacing the tracks or guides that you sell, it did the same thing. Closes to about 85% of the way closed and then just immediately goes back to the full open position. There’s no crunching or anything weird sounding. Ive looked and found no debris in the tracks or anywhere. It just won’t close. Tried the re initializing procedure (left button on, right button on off on off then left button off, then push and hold sunroof close button and it does not do what it does in this video. I cannot get my sunroof closed.
Another happy viewer from the future. Worked like a charm!! Btw: current price from the “stealership” for the drip trough is $602!!!! lol. A new sunroof assembly is over $3k!! (Used is still $1800!) Anyways thanks for your vids. Doing the lords work! Lolol
@@mski349 if you need a drip trough buy one for a 21 or newer. They are half the price. Maybe less than half the price, based on the price you quoted. Dealerships sell the tracks around here for about 1900 or so
Thanks! This sequence worked to close the sun shade on my wife’s 2018 expedition max all the way as it would not go past halfway closed. The actual glass sunroof still doesn’t work but at least now the sun shade is completely closed.
Glad it helped. That's why I did the first one I ever did, because I was sitting there looking at a sheet of instructions and it took me forever to get the timing right.
Thank you so much for this simple but effective explanation. I followed your every instruction and it took care of the issue on the first attempt. So greatly appreciative of your time and information.
Oh my God thank you so much for making this video, my sunroof was stuck in the open position for the last 4 days and it's been pouring so I couldn't drive my truck because of the rain. I followed your instructions and it fixed my sunroof. Thank you. 😊
Be careful with it, you might have your guide arms coming apart and that's what made it stick in the first place. I have a video on how to replace them, too.
Huge thanks for the how to's, I do have a follow up question. I replaced the rails after thinking I was in the clear with the original parts. Obviously some pieces surfaced and forced me to swap to the new style arms. Long story short I ended up manually closing the sunroof due to endless rain and no time to work on it, I probably should have do the learning process and all issues would have been solved. At the time the roof would only move forward, so I didn't want to screw anything up, almost as if it lost where it was. So the sunshade would not move either, again its like it thinks the sunroof is open, so I manually shut that as well. Now, my question is should I manually open the sunshade and follow through the reset process?? Thanks for your help!
Just do the reset. It doesn't matter where the glass or shade is, the reset accounts for all that. Or so they say. I've had some that were really out of whack and had to reset them several times to get them right, but it still did the trick.
Had an issue where it was a crack open and wouldn’t close. Tried this out and i thought it broke more did not want to open i turned truck off and on repeated the process and it has shut all the way!! Thank you
@@SealofPerfection Definitely appreciate the heads up. It seemed to be more of an error in the sequencing of the closing procedure. Truck is like new and not sure the roof had ever been opened. Recently serviced at the dealer with some work that included the disconnection of the battery. Everything seems to be in order as it did everything properly as shown in vid. Will definitely be aware if I decide to operate it again. Never really use it due to issues with the roof on my old 2008👍
@@tifway be sure to lube the back of the front sunroof seal. Right where the two glasses mate together. Hi , do you know how to check if the motors were damage? I replace the sunroof assembly and it was working before but glasses were broken, but it was operating. after I replace the complete frame and glasses the motor only works for few seconds and then nothing happen, not noise and both motors are like that. so I cannot close the shade also. any thought how to test if the issue is related to the motor or to the sunroof controller? I check the fuses and then are good, also there is power on the hardness of the motor... any help will be much appreciated
@@SealofPerfection my shade wouldn’t close all the way, (it had about a 2” gap until fully closed) I took it to the dealer and they said it would cost so I didn’t bother. Your video saved me a bunch of cash so thank you. I had a grin ear to ear when I did the reset and it fully closed. Not sure what caused it, otherwise everything has worked great!
Thank you so much. My retractable sunshade wouldn't close. It would start to close but then open like something was in the way. Doing this procedure solved the issue. Now to figure out how to stop the rattling.
Lube the seal. Back of the front glass, where it contacts the rear, and all around the rear glass. Get some silicone paste for the front glass, and some good silicone spray for the rear. Use the "straw" that comes with it...spray some into the "ditch" between the rear glass seal and the roof...use a dull pocket knife to slip between the seal and the roof opening and run it around the rear glass seal. That'll let the silicone you have sitting on top of the seal get between the seal and the roof and it'll likely shut up the rattle.
Thank you. Mine would not close and would go all the way back to fully open. This worked. I will lube it up like in your other video now that I know its needs maintenance.
Your video is great but unfortunately no matter how many times I disengage the motor. When I try and re sync the motor it trys to push the arms to far forward and just makes the banging noise. It trys to go into venting right away. Thanks
Great video. I tried it on my truck 2015. But mines only opens about a quart of and inch and that’s it. Does it needs grease some where. Again great video.
Great video. My sunroof opens and closes well but just by looking visually it looks like the back, drivers side corner of the sliding glass is slightly lower than the back glass causing some wind noise at high speeds. Can i adjust this height with an adjustment of one or more the the 6 screws holding the glass to the rails? I have never done anything to this sunroof.
Yes, the Torx number 25 screws are what adjusts that glass. Loosen the middle one and the one in the back where you want to adjust it and you can move it up and down. Ideally you want the front glass seal to sit about a millimeter higher than the back glass.
After watching this video I did the initialization process once and the shade moved all the way forward and back, but the glass still wouldn't open or even vent. I removed the glass and found plastic shards in the track. After clearing those and replacing the glass I tried the process again and now nothing is happening? I can hold the button for upwards of 45 seconds with no response. Any ideas on why that process wouldn't work??
So one of the corners got stuck on my 2017 f150 and I took it to a dealer, they made some adjustments, then tried to reprogram it as you just showed but now shade does not work nor sunroof. They do have it so it’s waterproof until we can figure out what to do next. No parts appeared broken. Suggestions?

Thank you!
Awesome. Glad it helped!
Was yours jammed shut? My won’t pop up or slide
@@CORaptorguy4 Your lift/guide arms are probably broken, too.
@@SealofPerfection just noticed by your username, it was your post on an F150 forum that had the TSB PDFs, I think. Thanks for helping us all out!
2022 cleaned & lubbed the gasket on my 2018 f150 raptor. Reprogram and now works like a charm. Thanks!!!
Thanks, helped a lot. I'm a gm mechanic and replaced the sunroof assembly on a ford f150. Still was acting weird, now it works great
Glad it helped!
Thank you for posting this video. It worked amazing. I was worried when the shade was not responding, I thought the motor went bad but after trying this, all the controls worked !
You are the man, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. Well done!
You are an absolute savior. I was playing with a buddies new F250 and the sunshade was stuck half closed. This saved me and he's none the wiser. Lol
LOL
Unless he sees the video, lol
My sunroof wouldn’t open randomly. I did this and everything is working great now! Thank you!
You are very welcome! Yep, doing this programs the shade as well. I added shade to the description in case anyone was having an issue with that part.
Yep, leave it alone and pray you only have the broken rail/guide arms and it didn't kill something in the track itself.
This video and the one about lubing the sunroof just saved my son a quoted $3K repair bill at the local dealership. Thanks!! Who knew?
Thank you, this was so informative! I can only imagine how much money you’ve saved so many people from having to take their vehicles in to get serviced! I will need to try this out to see if it fixes ours!!
I am one of them
Thanks, this fixed the shade not closing completely on a Ford Expedition 2019, you saved me a $100, I owe you a drink
Wasn't experiencing issues with the opening or closing of the glass. My issue was the shade not closing all the way. Followed your video and it works now. Sad thing is that I took it to my Ford dealership and they couldn't figure it out. Thanks for your work and video of this.
Same sun shade was only opening half way and it would bake my raptor interior.
Thank you. It had me bummed thinking maybe all it did was vent. Your the best!👍
Tanks for posting. Helped my daughter avoid a painful trip to the shop. No way she would have been able to get in tomorrow.
Glad it helped!
Just fixed my sun roof shade from not closing all the way and seems like everything is working fine again! Thanks!
@@TheDeemerDifference love to hear that!
Great explanation, replaced the rails on my 2019 F150 and this is the video I needed to complete the install.
Thanks alot, one touch wasn't working and now it works great
Omg brooooooo ,,I had my moon roof so messed for many months and after following your tips I make it works again thank you so muchhhhhhhhh
Thank you so much this fixed my sunroof after loosening up motor and adjusting cables, dealership could not figure it out
It worked for a 2015 Ford F-150 3.5l King Ranch 4x4 (05-24-2021). I thank you for making this post.
This fixed my no power to sunroof shade. Sunroof wouldn't open as well. This was caused by battery disconnect for me. Thanks for posting!
Yep, battery change or disconnect is a common cause, glad it helped
My sunroof is not doing what everyone else’s seems to be. Before and after replacing the tracks or guides that you sell, it did the same thing. Closes to about 85% of the way closed and then just immediately goes back to the full open position. There’s no crunching or anything weird sounding. Ive looked and found no debris in the tracks or anywhere. It just won’t close. Tried the re initializing procedure (left button on, right button on off on off then left button off, then push and hold sunroof close button and it does not do what it does in this video. I cannot get my sunroof closed.
Appreciate the videos for the Ford sunroof rails. 2017 F250, both rails cracked in multiple locations, what a load of crap.
Dealerships sell the tracks around here for about 1900 or so
You don’t even know how much I appreciate this video!!!
My one touch feature stopped working after my battery died and this fixed it thank you!
Dude, throw a donate button up here. You saved me an $800 trip to the dealership!! Thanks for making all of these videos.
Glad I could help!
Thanks! This sequence worked to close the sun shade on my wife’s 2018 expedition max all the way as it would not go past halfway closed. The actual glass sunroof still doesn’t work but at least now the sun shade is completely closed.
Your lift/guides arms are probably broken. I have a video on how to replace them.
Thank you so much it's one thing reading instructions and another having a visual walk through appreciate the video
Thank you! We’d had an ice storm and mine quit working. I assumed a motor had died, but this fixed it! Thanks so much for sharing this.
My shade wouldn’t close past the front half of the sunroof and this got it closed like a charm first try. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I bought the truck used and the shade has always been open for about 3/4 of an inch. Now it fully closes. Thank you again
Thank you for this! Much appreciated.
Yes! My sunshade had a small gap opened for months. This fixed it first try. Thank you.
Thank you. Your rail replacement video and this initialization video was extremely helpful. I really appreciate it.
Glad to hear it, thank you!
Followed your instructions and my sunroof and shade are now working perfectly. Thanks so much for adding this to the UA-cam University!
My shade wouldn’t close all the way. Thanks to this video it now works perfectly
I fixed my PH Ford Everest 3.2 Tatanium 4x4 with this video. Thank you!!!!
Had an issue where it was a crack open and wouldn’t close. Tried this out and i thought it broke more did not want to open i turned truck off and on repeated the process and it has shut all the way!! Thank you
Amazing video bro. A definite car guy award from me. Thank you.
You saved the day … had a passenger open the roof and it would not close… all good after your help …👍
Be aware you may have some broken guide arms that are causing this problem. I would inspect them before opening it again
Without lube, they will kind of stick and that puts an enormous strain on the arms that move that sunroof. That's part of what leads to failure.
If you look at my channel, I have a video that shows you how to do it
@@SealofPerfection Greatly appreciate the follow up and being so thorough.
Great video, my shade to the sunroof was acting up, and this fixed it !
You sir are an absolute stud! Just saved me from a heart attack
Great video!!! Thx to you i managed to reprogram the sunroof. Thanks!!!
Man I can’t thank you enough! I can’t believe that actually worked for my 2020 F250. You the man!
Glad it helped! What kind of issue did you have? I haven't seen much on the newer ones yet
Hi there , my sun roof hangs up when I try to open, open if I push down on window
Bro thank you!! My shade has had the slightest crack in it for the 3 years I’ve owner my truck. Just did this and it’s fully closed
How can exchange information with you sir.
I wont to know how you handled the sounds of the moonroof because I cnnot get red of it
Thank you. Mine would not close and would go all the way back to fully open. This worked. I will lube it up like in your other video now that I know its needs maintenance.
Glad to hear it. Be mindful of those lift arms, they may well be starting to come apart from the stress.
Thank God for this video saved me an 2 hour drive and looking like an idiot!
Your video is great but unfortunately no matter how many times I disengage the motor. When I try and re sync the motor it trys to push the arms to far forward and just makes the banging noise. It trys to go into venting right away. Thanks
Cheat code worked, my 2017 lariat wouldn’t open past vent. Now it does. Thanks.
@@SealofPerfection thank you! I will give it a try this afternoon!
Thank you so much! Great info! And easy step by step with gold explanation. Also your video on lubricating the gasket is great!
Thank you!!!! My one touch stopped working and this fixed it!
