Boy what a realistic, knowledgeable and humble man. I know exactly what he felt when he met Jesse Glover. I had trained with several great Martial Artists including Sifu Dan Insosanto, Karate and wrestling champions and starting to get a little cocky, then I met Sensei Benny Urquidez and was dumbfounded and could tell the skill difference was noticable.
One thing you said really struck a chord with me. "If you have never met someone with that kind of skill you can't imagine..." I have been so fortunate in my martial arts journey and my career as a surgeon, to have trained with and seen some of the best. In my youth I was a good judo guy ...football player..,luckily I was humbled by Olympic judoka Rene zelenberg and pro boxers in san Antonio texas...very high level...,later in life I had a few seminars with Inosanto and Larry Hartsell...very high level!!! Among my peers I was ' high level'. Then I met a medium level student of Master Henry Cook in Louisville KY....the student was high level and I never met Master Cook but I could only imagine his level!! Lastly I had the chance to train several times with Iowa wrestling guy and bodyweight exercise master Matt Furey....high level guy even though I was a very decent grappler....point is there is always someone better and if you humble yourself and train hard...empty your cup....one can learn a ton .. ..,.
Jim couldnt name anyone or give any details but made a vague statement that all the fan boys love to throw out there. "trust me" doesnt work for people who use critical thinking. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and he supplied zero.

Totally awesome , I'm 70 years old been reading everything I can on Bruce Lee I could since I was about 18. I'm a big fan. Was great to hear this info. I got to attend a siminar with Leo Fong a few years ago. Trained with Lamar Davis briefly. I'm not physically that good but I learn what I can When I can. Hi would u mind sharing your thoughts and experiences in Leo Fong? I have been searching for his Art Wei Kune Do but not to put him down or anything but I wasn't and haven't been able to find much practical use of it. To me it seemed like boxing with rhythms and patterns just like karate and kunf-fu has rhythms and patterns... repetition. Not sure of its effectiveness but just curious to know your experience...I will probably be wrong in my assessment but just want to hear from somebody with experience..
I only attended a seminar with Sifu Fong about5 years ago at Sifu Lamar Davis,s school in Oneonta Alabama. What I remember is throwing a lot of jabs, crosses , uppercut, hooks , a Hammer fist and an axe hand , in some combinations that Sifu taught while we worked on moving around with footwork. I found him very knowledgeable and a real nice man. I had him as a friend on Facebook, I had also ordered a DVD tape of his on knockout combinations that he had signed. I felt honored to have trained under him. He was close friends with Bruce Lee and had helped get Bruce interested in boxing techniques years ago. I was about 65 yrs old at the time.. I believe he still has a website. He's an expert in several styles. You can get him on Facebook, and he will usually answere any questions on Facebook messenger. He knows Jeet Kune Do very well. There are some very good videos on him on you tube. I still try to stay in practice with my strikes and foot work I learned from him. We mostly hit the pads during the seminar.

My name is Roy Barnett, and I live in the Metro Detroit Michigan area of the U.S. I have been following your channel for a few years, and I love your insights into structure, philosophy, history, meditation, adaptability and more. But what I appreciate even more about you, as this is probably my third time watching this, is your respect for your teachers, and their wishes. Following your example, I won't say who this person is I am talking about, but I had taken a picture with him at one of the 5 and half seminars I have attended with him, over a span from '96 to 2017, and it was posted on my website. The more I looked at the picture there, the more uneasy I became, because for those people who would recognize him, it might seem I was a serious student training under him, and I couldn't promote myself under such a suggestion. I took the picture down, and when I saw him again, I told him my reason for taking the picture down, because I felt I was not really a student, just someone who had attended a few seminars that give you an overview. He laughed and said, "You have more of a right to say you have learned from me, than many who have just shook my hand in a picture, and claimed I "certified" them.." I thanked him for his kind words.....but the picture is still not there. I thank you for in a way, reinforcing my decision. I started training when I was 12, and just celebrated my 69th birthday this past August. I still continue to learn, analyze, pressure test, observe and assess. My brief experience training with Jesse Glover was very similar to yours. It was very closed door even for a seminar. You are right you have to know somebody. Oh I remember the not stop punching, back fist and big punch. It certainly brings back good memories. You are right not many old school teachers around anymore mostly for profit.

I really appreciate Adam Chan's neutral approach with how he thinks about things. His stories of meeting incredible skill is similar to mine. I totally understand, many people just cannot imagine this kind of high level skills but I have and it is beyond the normal constructs of what the mind and fathom without a true reference.
Awesome story I trained with Jesse at a seminar he did in Maryland I was so in aw of him here I am touching hands with a original Brice Lee student. He was so nice to me as I introduced myself and told him it was a true honor and I was William Cheung student. We took photos he signed the first book written by Bruce as I read Jesse's book and remember he took the photo on the cover. RIP Jesse
I liked hearing what you had to say, because I was a student of Ed Harts and I also had the privilege of training with Jesse quite a few times. I lived with Ed for a few months and Jesse would stop by at all different times of day or night and sometimes we'd train and other times I'd pick his brain for hours. I was 19 at the time and both of those men made a huge impact on my life.
Very interesting to hear that Jesse had an old school Chinese Gongfu mindset, in terms of not caring at all for prize fighting, and being very secretive with high level skills and only passing it down to a select few.
Bruce Lee was incredible for his size- speed . power and fight IQ was out of this world. If any one doubts what Bruce lee was capable of - Then they don't know enough about Bruce Lee .. He was a man who trained for no rules, No tap outs or trophies. He always put his skills to the test and he was the founder of Jeet Kune Do .. The testimonies are out there ..

I love Lee, but after doing extensive research and studying all his training footage I’ve come to the conclusion he wasn’t as fast or powerful as people claimed. Not by today’s standard anyways. Nonetheless he’s a legend and martial arts wouldn’t be what it is today without him.
No tap outs or trophies. Really? BTW, WHAT good is such training if your attacker is armed with a Beretta or a Colt? That too in the United States where such guns are common? So, you mean if somebody really wanted to murder Bruce Lee, he would first challenge him to a no tap out match? 🤣😂😀 Martial arts are a good way to keep physically and mentally fit. Becoming a competent or even the best martial artist won't automatically make you invincible.

You're one hundred percent right. If the people who put Sijo Bruce Lee Down. Never Studied with his Students or heard real stories of Sijo Bruce. He taught many great people. I studied with 3 out of the 5 student's I could train with, James DeMile, Dan Inosanto, Richard Bustillo, I did Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do & than I did Wing Chun Do. Also Kareem Abdul Jabbar Was great he told awesome Stories about Bruce Lee & Linda! Kareem said he still does light training! That was back in 2017 So Yeah! Also Sigung Taky Kimura sent me a private video and gave me great advice. I was blessed to have met & trained with some great teacher/martial arts masters! I love Those guys. Before I studied with Bruce Lee's Students I was doing Japanese Samurai Arts/Iaijutsu, Kobudo, Kickboxing & Karate From Sensei Geelani. Who is a great instructor when it comes to the real Japanese Arts! With some JKD Basics!
Great interview. Thanks. I was fortunate enough to meet and work out with Jesse numerous times. He was absolutely a great martial artist but also a great man. I have been friends with Steve for many years and that's how I met Jesse. I will always be grateful to Steve for making that introduction. I wish I would have had more opportunity to train and hang out with him.

Yes, I have met James Demille, 50 years ago. I couldn't remember his name. Remember him telling me about Jessie Glover. He told me about Jessie holding a very heavy weight in front of him, in a Wing Chun Movement.
Can you explain why the haters try to debunk DeMiles saying he was rip off artist when starting his in dojo. And made up stories about Bruce being amazing so DeMiles can use Bruce Lee name to promote DeMiles and his business whatever it was.

Great vid Adam. I hope this will remind some people to quit looking for the flaws in the people that innovate and change the status quo...we all have flaws, and in martial arts ultimately it's not what the particular style does for you, but what YOU do to better the concepts of the style; and then, your Wing Chun, etc. becomes something others might be inspired by. There is no best...the secret is to find what makes you the better fighter, person, etc....Just a thought.

Problem is that I can't remember exactly who said this, but I am sure I can look it up. At least I know that Ip-Man gave names to describe the characteristics of all his close students... At least then I am curious what he named WSL :) Nevertheless - I have nothing against WSL! I am learning his style at the moment
@@Tequn9q You are LUCKY!! You are learning one of the best systems of Wing Chun! You just have to learn the proper footwork (the angled step and body rotation toward the attack) and ten concepts found ONLY found in traditional Wing Chun.

What WSL doesn't get enough recognition for is what an excellent teacher he was. The true gauge of the instructor is how good the students are. He generated many top-notch instructors, including Bruce Lee, Gary Lam, David Peterson, to name a small subset. My sifu had the privilege of hosting both Wong Shun Leung and Chu Shong Tin back in the early 90's in Victoria. I wish I could have been there!
What about Grandmast William Cheung,? He fought WAY more than Wong Shun Leung!! He fought side-by-side with Bruce Lee against the Triads, a brutal syndicate that ran Hong Kong at the time! He knows the ENTIRE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM! What about Cho Shu Tin? He was the oldest student of Ip Man and ALSO knew the WHOLE SYSTEM of Traditional Wing Chun! Again, BRUCE was GOOD, but NOT as good as GRANDMASTERS William Cheung and Cho Shu Tin (Traditional), and Wong Shun Leung (Modified)!

Mr Chan, i watched some of your videos and loved them. I'm an humble wing chun pratictioner and i know that it is very hard to judge a person's ability without touching hands and meet him in person. Despite of that, it is crystal clear for me that your level is very high. So I respected you and watched your technical videos every time i could. But after watching this I respect you even more. Thanks so much for sharing about your first encounter with Jesse Glover Adam. That matches up perfectly with stories I heard about him from my NCGF teacher. Great to get a different personal angle on what it was like. I think the "Bruce was just an actor" comments are mostly trolls trying to get the fanboys to go nuts. I mean, do they even give a moment's thought to the question, "What would inspire all of these great martial artists to study with and comment so favorably about Bruce? Why would these guys study so intensively with someone who was just an actor?" He clearly had something special. Whether he was "the best" is irrelevant and unknowable.
@@m.b.593 Todd Parks, but it's not active teaching at the moment. He used to live here in Ashland and I trained with him for a couple of years, eventually bringing in a couple of my students to train as well. Then he moved back to Seattle so I've just been working with one other student in particular on our own. We meet 3 times a week most weeks...mostly working on the striking part...the sticking part we touch base with but don't know enough to really train hard at. But even the small portion or NCGF that we do work has been extremely beneficial to my health, fitness and old guy version of self-defense. ;~) It was so great to meet Todd and work with him. I'd heard so many good things about Jesse...it seemed like a miracle that a guy who actually trained with him would just walk up to me in the park and introduce himself. He had a big effect on me and my students as well.
I should've responded better to this jerk on another thread ( acts like a lawyer ) asking CAN BRUCE LEE beat Mike Tyson . I knew his end game should've said YES it's possible if Bruce knew exactly what he's doing going against a skilled boxer let alone huge muscular. I let him win the argument, I should've grilled him MORE for NOT answering my questions. And accuse me for being too sensitive and testy. Well, he wouldn't answer my questions like if he's trying to draw the conclusion Bruce is not a fighter, tmif that's the case when did he fought Bruce Lee, time and place. He refused to answer. Now you know that Chinese Kung Fu actually works. It really depends on how much dedication and commitment a martial artist is willing to learn. Bruce spent hours practicing one Wing Chun technique. Unfortunately, time has caught up and not many Chinese are that dedicated and only fixated in making money and family. Back then, students would be heavily tested and spent 10-15 hours a day practicing. Kung Fu was their life. Ask yourself this question, “How did these martial arts masters fight without being winded or tired? How could they fight 100 men in a live combat or war without getting tired? You see UFC fights and they’re huffing and puffing so hard but how did these martial arts masters like Tsun Tzu or Musashi Myamoto able to take out hundreds of opponent and still survive using classical martial arts? “🤔 Find your wisdom and find the real masters. There are only a few handful. Find the lineage. Then, you will find how effective Kung Fu is. The legacy is dying and unfortunately, a lot of the Kung Fu masters are gone and only mainly foreigners are dedicated and taking over. It’s all about dedication, respect and to be humble. That’s Martial Arts. Stay away from the Communism propaganda that controlled martial arts in its country. There are only a few like 5% or maybe less in that country that have real masters. You can find them over here in America that migrated from Hong Kong.

Interesting video. Being a Wing Chun instructor myself; I have watched many online videos that drive me crazy. Often folks don't realize there is not a direct correlation between a great fighter to being a great instructor.
I know an ex military guy who says that he saw super 8 movie footage of Bruce fighting a bunch of guys at the same time. It convinced him that Bruce is probably the greatest fighter of the last 100 years. He said that I would have to have special skills in order to be able to view it. He never elaborated as to what that means.

Great interview Adam. All that you said about Jesse was true. It seems like you met Jesse during his Bootcamp workouts. I was like you, my arms were too numb after the exercises to stick. Those In and Outs were brutal. You forget to mention at the end of class of 'Chasing the Glove.' I met you briefly at the gas station by Lakeview Cemetery as we were both going to Jesse's funeral. Patrick Noonan, I also lived at Ed Hart's. What do you miss more? Ed's all night typing or endless smoking. I'll never forget that my pillow on his couch was a Big Punch punching glove.

Loved your talk about the old school teachers. Ken Chung and Ben Der are two of the kinds of sifu's you talk about--old-school in San Jose, who I've had the great honor of working with.
Great interview, I learned a ton. I started in martial arts in the early 1980s, won a few competitions, but family, and work kept me from going 100%. Re Jesse Glover, in movie's he's often ignored.
I learned from the Original JKD branch but soaked up any information on martial arts and fighting I could find like a sponge. Really enjoying your content.

Is this similar to why Bruce didn't speak of Fook Yeung and his training with Mr. Yeung from 1959-1965 when they worked together at Ruby Chow's restaurant? Forever, there's always been the Ip Man, Jesse Glover, Wong Shun Leung connections to Bruce but rarely, with the exception of Steve Smith is Fook Yeung ever mentioned in connection to Bruce. Why is this, Adam? Was there a secret pact between Bruce and Mr. Yeung?
Wow! A very great interview indeed. Yes I heard of a master that had known some deadly techniques that he didn't even teach his own children. The art was so deadly that he took those secrets with him to the grave.
For WSLVT in Toronto, there is Dwight Hennings. He learned under Lawrence "Dai Gau" Leung (retired) who was WSL's most senior student. WKL was the first to sign up for WSL's school but Lawrence Leung was WSL's school mate and started learning before he opened a school.
The only affirmation I need to believe how deadly Bruce Lee really was, is that three of the best fighters at the time sought him out for instructions. Mike Stone,Chuck Norris, and Joe Lewis.Stone was a sadist as a fighter, Lewis was a juggernaut with a ego to match and Norris was the ultimate technician.For them to be impressed enough to seek lee out and stick with him for more than one day, he had to be above them in every way.

Could you please list in detail or in another interview that actual FULL workout you did with Jesse's students ? I remember talking to Jesse over the phone and he said the same thing that many JKD people weren't in shape.
Please show where you found he was ranked and a champion. The USJF keeps excellent records and I have been unable to verify his ranking and tournament wins.
I know this is old and I'm very late in the comment section but I'd like to say that I've watched this vid so many times and love the stories because it hits me so deep as a martial artist. Especially the part what he said as about bruce and Jesse and that fact that when they fought they fought with style and their tools, it wasn't a same thing style fight but a different style fight, I love stuff like that because when I fight or spar I expect that individual to use all their tools.
I am a Kyokushin practitioner and impressed with this interview, very clear and most of all very upfront and from my perspective all of his comments sounded truthful. Osu!
Michael Ja White is a practitioner of that discipline too. But I guess his master said to him it was OK to brag about himself and put other martial artist on blast, like publicly saying he can beat all the cast of Expendables. Well, Wesley Snipes was in one of those movies, one of Michael's idols
I've learnt so much from this video it's insane... I did about 9 months of wing chun an stopped taking classes due to covid. Over a year later i'm trying to practice what i can remember at home. It really does suck that the past is gone in a way... I'd want nothing more than to find someone like jesse glover or one of those really great Sifu's you mentioned, not have to pay a monthly fee and just have someone who is willing to mentor me, train as much as i want for no cost; but sadly that's not possible. Going to a class is all well and good but the progress you make is incredibly slow because it's not one on one training with the Sifu and you end up going over the same things a lot of the time

The late great Karate Champion Jim Kelly said that Bruce Lee was Untouchable ! He knew people that Lee sparred with, and wouldn't say their names out of respect. You can find plenty of interviews of him on UA-cam commenting Lee's abilities.
One thing that this guy said that was right...If you haven't experienced certain levels of skill and control...then its kind of pointless trying to talk about it...But once you've experienced that then there's know real point talking about it...
What I knows about Jesse he always mention not just WsL but also William Cheung whom Bruce admire the most in Wing Chun back in HK era. Great interviews
Fascinating interview. Wanting to learn everything about Bruce Lee, now I wish I had met and learned from Jesse Glover and the others that were mentioned, as well as from Lee. If you don't keep an open mind and look only at the finger, you will miss all that "heavenly glory". BTW, I think Lee was a great actor who was constantly improving, judging by "Enter the Dragon" and what he'd done before. Just my opinion.

In my youth I was a good judo guy ...football player..,luckily I was humbled by Olympic judoka Rene zelenberg and pro boxers in san Antonio texas...very high level...,later in life I had a few seminars with Inosanto and Larry Hartsell...very high level!!! Among my peers I was ' high level'. Then I met a medium level student of Master Henry Cook in Louisville KY....the student was high level and I never met Master Cook but I could only imagine his level!! Lastly I had the chance to train several times with Iowa wrestling guy and bodyweight exercise master Matt Furey....high level guy even though I was a very decent grappler....point is there is always someone better and if you humble yourself and train hard...empty your cup....one can learn a ton

I got to attend a siminar with Leo Fong a few years ago. Trained with Lamar Davis briefly. I'm not physically that good but I learn what I can When I can. Hi would u mind sharing your thoughts and experiences in Leo Fong? I have been searching for his Art Wei Kune Do but not to put him down or anything but I wasn't and haven't been able to find much practical use of it. To me it seemed like boxing with rhythms and patterns just like karate and kunf-fu has rhythms and patterns... repetition.
Not sure of its effectiveness but just curious to know your experience...I will probably be wrong in my assessment but just want to hear from somebody with experience..
I only attended a seminar with Sifu Fong about5 years ago at Sifu Lamar Davis,s school in Oneonta Alabama. What I remember is throwing a lot of jabs, crosses , uppercut, hooks , a Hammer fist and an axe hand , in some combinations that Sifu taught while we worked on moving around with footwork. I found him very knowledgeable and a real nice man. I had him as a friend on Facebook, I had also ordered a DVD tape of his on knockout combinations that he had signed. I felt honored to have trained under him. He was close friends with Bruce Lee and had helped get Bruce interested in boxing techniques years ago. I was about 65 yrs old at the time.. I believe he still has a website. He's an expert in several styles. You can get him on Facebook, and he will usually answere any questions on Facebook messenger. He knows Jeet Kune Do very well. There are some very good videos on him on you tube. I still try to stay in practice with my strikes and foot work I learned from him. We mostly hit the pads during the seminar.
Keep on training! I am not exactly a spring chicken. I have been training WC for awhile. It will keep your mind and body in tune!

But what I appreciate even more about you, as this is probably my third time watching this, is your respect for your teachers, and their wishes. Following your example, I won't say who this person is I am talking about, but I had taken a picture with him at one of the 5 and half seminars I have attended with him, over a span from '96 to 2017, and it was posted on my website. The more I looked at the picture there, the more uneasy I became, because for those people who would recognize him, it might seem I was a serious student training under him, and I couldn't promote myself under such a suggestion. I took the picture down, and when I saw him again, I told him my reason for taking the picture down, because I felt I was not really a student, just someone who had attended a few seminars that give you an overview. He laughed and said, "You have more of a right to say you have learned from me, than many who have just shook my hand in a picture, and claimed I "certified" them.." I thanked him for his kind words.....but the picture is still not there. I thank you for in a way, reinforcing my decision. I started training when I was 12, and just celebrated my 69th birthday this past August. I still continue to learn, analyze, pressure test, observe and assess. My brief experience training with Jesse Glover was very similar to yours. It was very closed door even for a seminar. You are right you have to know somebody. Oh I remember the not stop punching, back fist and big punch. It certainly brings back good memories. You are right not many old school teachers around anymore mostly for profit.

I really appreciate Adam Chan's neutral approach with how he thinks about things. His stories of meeting incredible skill is similar to mine. I totally understand, many people just cannot imagine this kind of high level skills but I have and it is beyond the normal constructs of what the mind and fathom without a true reference.
Awesome story I trained with Jesse at a seminar he did in Maryland I was so in aw of him here I am touching hands with a original Brice Lee student. He was so nice to me as I introduced myself and told him it was a true honor and I was William Cheung student. We took photos he signed the first book written by Bruce as I read Jesse's book and remember he took the photo on the cover. RIP Jesse

I liked hearing what you had to say, because I was a student of Ed Harts and I also had the privilege of training with Jesse quite a few times. I lived with Ed for a few months and Jesse would stop by at all different times of day or night and sometimes we'd train and other times I'd pick his brain for hours. I was 19 at the time and both of those men made a huge impact on my life.

Very interesting to hear that Jesse had an old school Chinese Gongfu mindset, in terms of not caring at all for prize fighting, and being very secretive with high level skills and only passing it down to a select few.

Bruce Lee was incredible for his size- speed . power and fight IQ was out of this world. If any one doubts what Bruce lee was capable of - Then they don't know enough about Bruce Lee .. I love Lee, but after doing extensive research and studying all his training footage I’ve come to the conclusion he wasn’t as fast or powerful as people claimed. Not by today’s standard anyways. Nonetheless he’s a legend and martial arts wouldn’t be what it is today without him.

Jesse was an amazingly kind and powerful person, glad I briefly got to meet and train with him at a seminar.

Ditto that, I trained with Jesse for just one month, work schedule made it too difficult, but he was knowledgeable, kind, and strong- really wish I could have trained with him longer.

You're one hundred percent right. If the people who put Sijo Bruce Lee Down. Never Studied with his Students or heard real stories of Sijo Bruce. He taught many great people. I studied with 3 out of the 5 student's I could train with, James DeMile, Dan Inosanto, Richard Bustillo, I did Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do & than I did Wing Chun Do. Also Kareem Abdul Jabbar Was great he told awesome Stories about Bruce Lee & Linda! Kareem said he still does light training! That was back in 2017 So Yeah! Also Sigung Taky Kimura sent me a private video and gave me great advice. I was blessed to have met & trained with some great teacher/martial arts masters! I love Those guys. Before I studied with Bruce Lee's Students I was doing Japanese Samurai Arts/Iaijutsu, Kobudo, Kickboxing & Karate From Sensei Geelani. Who is a great instructor when it comes to the real Japanese Arts! With some JKD Basics!
Great interview. Thanks. I was fortunate enough to meet and work out with Jesse numerous times. He was absolutely a great martial artist but also a great man. I have been friends with Steve for many years and that's how I met Jesse. I will always be grateful to Steve for making that introduction. I wish I would have had more opportunity to train and hang out with him.

I hope this will remind some people to quit looking for the flaws in the people that innovate and change the status quo...we all have flaws, and in martial arts ultimately it's not what the particular style does for you, but what YOU do to better the concepts of the style; and then, your Wing Chun, etc. becomes something others might be inspired by. There is no best...the secret is to find what makes you the better fighter, person, etc....Just a thought.

Who would doubt Wong Shun Leung? Alot of Ip Man's students fought, but Wong Shun Leung was the one that got the title King of Talking Hands.
WSL sounds amazing in all regards, but remember that Master Ip often had two meanings when he gave a name 😁

My background is Ip-Ching Wing Chun - so I already got a few years of that before I started learning WSL so I am happy to be able do some comparisons. Also trained with a few students from Leung Ting system as well.

What WSL doesn't get enough recognition for is what an excellent teacher he was. The true gauge of the instructor is how good the students are. He generated many top-notch instructors, including Bruce Lee, Gary Lam, David Peterson, to name a small subset. My sifu had the privilege of hosting both Wong Shun Leung and Chu Shong Tin back in the early 90's in Victoria. I wish I could have been there!
What about Grandmast William Cheung,? He fought WAY more than Wong Shun Leung!! He fought side-by-side with Bruce Lee against the Triads, a brutal syndicate that ran Hong Kong at the time! He knows the ENTIRE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM! What about Cho Shu Tin? He was the oldest student of Ip Man and ALSO knew the WHOLE SYSTEM of Traditional Wing Chun! Again, BRUCE was GOOD, but NOT as good as GRANDMASTERS William Cheung and Cho Shu Tin (Traditional), and Wong Shun Leung (Modified)!

I think the "Bruce was just an actor" comments are mostly trolls trying to get the fanboys to go nuts. I mean, do they even give a moment's thought to the question, "What would inspire all of these great martial artists to study with and comment so favorably about Bruce? Why would these guys study so intensively with someone who was just an actor?" He clearly had something special. Whether he was "the best" is irrelevant and unknowable.

@@m.b.593 Todd Parks, but it's not active teaching at the moment. He used to live here in Ashland and I trained with him for a couple of years, eventually bringing in a couple of my students to train as well. Then he moved back to Seattle so I've just been working with one other student in particular on our own. We meet 3 times a week most weeks...mostly working on the striking part...the sticking part we touch base with but don't know enough to really train hard at. But even the small portion or NCGF that we do work has been extremely beneficial to my health, fitness and old guy version of self-defense. ;~) It was so great to meet Todd and work with him. I'd heard so many good things about Jesse...it seemed like a miracle that a guy who actually trained with him would just walk up to me in the park and introduce himself. He had a big effect on me and my students as well.
Reading "Tao of Jeet Kune Do", there's no avoiding the obvious, that he knew what he was talking about and that he had something to share.
I should've responded better to this jerk on another thread ( acts like a lawyer ) asking CAN BRUCE LEE beat Mike Tyson . I knew his end game should've said YES it's possible if Bruce knew exactly what he's doing going against a skilled boxer let alone huge muscular. I let him win the argument, I should've grilled him MORE for NOT answering my questions. And accuse me for being too sensitive and testy. Well, he wouldn't answer my questions like if he's trying to draw the conclusion Bruce is not a fighter, tmif that's the case when did he fought Bruce Lee, time and place. He refused to answer. He was arrogant prick.

Now you know that Chinese Kung Fu actually works. It really depends on how much dedication and commitment a martial artist is willing to learn. Bruce spent hours practicing one Wing Chun technique.
Unfortunately, time has caught up and not many Chinese are that dedicated and only fixated in making money and family. Back then, students would be heavily tested and spent 10-15 hours a day practicing. Kung Fu was their life.
Ask yourself this question, “How did these martial arts masters fight without being winded or tired? How could they fight 100 men in a live combat or war without getting tired? You see UFC fights and they’re huffing and puffing so hard but how did these martial arts masters like Tsun Tzu or Musashi Myamoto able to take out hundreds of opponent and still survive using classical martial arts? “🤔
Find your wisdom and find the real masters. There are only a few handful. Find the lineage. Then, you will find how effective Kung Fu is. The legacy is dying and unfortunately, a lot of the Kung Fu masters are gone and only mainly foreigners are dedicated and taking over. It’s all about dedication, respect and to be humble. That’s Martial Arts.
Stay away from the Communism propaganda that controlled martial arts in its country. There are only a few like 5% or maybe less in that country that have real masters. You can find them over here in America that migrated from Hong Kong.

I know an ex military guy who says that he saw super 8 movie footage of Bruce fighting a bunch of guys at the same time. It convinced him that Bruce is probably the greatest fighter of the last 100 years. He said that I would have to have special skills in order to be able to view it. He never elaborated as to what that means.

Great interview Adam. All that you said about Jesse was true. It seems like you met Jesse during his Bootcamp workouts. I was like you, my arms were too numb after the exercises to stick. Those In and Outs were brutal. You forget to mention at the end of class of 'Chasing the Glove.' I met you briefly at the gas station by Lakeview Cemetery as we were both going to Jesse's funeral. Patrick Noonan, I also lived at Ed Hart's. What do you miss more? Ed's all night typing or endless smoking. I'll never forget that my pillow on his couch was a Big Punch punching glove.

Loved your talk about the old school teachers. Ken Chung and Ben Der are two of the kinds of sifu's you talk about--old-school in San Jose, who I've had the great honor of working with.
Great interview, I learned a ton. I started in martial arts in the early 1980s, won a few competitions, but family, and work kept me from going 100%. Re Jesse Glover, in movie's he's often ignored.

Yes I heard of a master that had known some deadly techniques that he didn't even teach his own children. The art was so deadly that he took those secrets with him to the grave.
For WSLVT in Toronto, there is Dwight Hennings. He learned under Lawrence "Dai Gau" Leung (retired) who was WSL's most senior student.
WKL was the first to sign up for WSL's school but Lawrence Leung was WSL's school mate and started learning before he opened a school.

@PKB Just about every self respecting fighter of every style of martial arts have dabbled in acting given the chance.Do you want to question the fighting abilities of Joe Lewis,Gene Lebel,Benny Uqidez,Muhammad Ali,Bill Wallace,and many many others not only in martial arts but other sporting events.Just because they did a movie here and there doesn’t take away the fact that they were first professionals in their chosen arts.I don’t know what rock you been living under but many ufc fighters have participated Or turned to the movie industry while they were still fighting,so check your facts before you make yourself look stupid by your dumb statement.

Could you please list in detail or in another interview that actual FULL workout you did with Jesse's students ? I remember talking to Jesse over the phone and he said the same thing that many JKD people weren't in shape.
Jesse Glover a student of Bruce Lee was ranked number 4 in Judo and 14 times a Judo champion.
Please show where you found he was ranked and a champion. The USJF keeps excellent records and I have been unable to verify his ranking and tournament wins.
I know this is old and I'm very late in the comment section but I'd like to say that I've watched this vid so many times and love the stories because it hits me so deep as a martial artist. Especially the part what he said as about bruce and Jesse and that fact that when they fought they fought with style and their tools, it wasn't a same thing style fight but a different style fight, I love stuff like that because when I fight or spar I expect that individual to use all their tools.
I am a Kyokushin practitioner and impressed with this interview, very clear and most of all very upfront and from my perspective all of his comments sounded truthful. Osu!
Michael Ja White is a practitioner of that discipline too. But I guess his master said to him it was OK to brag about himself and put other martial artist on blast, like publicly saying he can beat all the cast of Expendables. Well, Wesley Snipes was in one of those movies, one of Michael's idols
I've learnt so much from this video it's insane... I did about 9 months of wing chun an stopped taking classes due to covid. Over a year later i'm trying to practice what i can remember at home. It really does suck that the past is gone in a way... I'd want nothing more than to find someone like jesse glover or one of those really great Sifu's you mentioned, not have to pay a monthly fee and just have someone who is willing to mentor me, train as much as i want for no cost; but sadly that's not possible. Going to a class is all well and good but the progress you make is incredibly slow because it's not one on one training with the Sifu and you end up going over the same things a lot of the time

@@PooleAcademyofWingChun I know "be afraid of the man that's practice 1 kick 1000 times not a 1000 different kicks once". But the progress from doing group classes and stuff is still slow

The late great Karate Champion Jim Kelly said that Bruce Lee was Untouchable ! He knew people that Lee sparred with, and wouldn't say their names out of respect. You can find plenty of interviews of him on UA-cam commenting Lee's abilities.

Fascinating interview. Wanting to learn everything about Bruce Lee, now I wish I had met and learned from Jesse Glover and the others that were mentioned, as well as from Lee. If you don't keep an open mind and look only at the finger, you will miss all that "heavenly glory". BTW, I think Lee was a great actor who was constantly improving, judging by "Enter the Dragon" and what he'd done before. Just my opinion.
