I am from Covington Louisiana and I just found your post being the sewing teacher and I really love it especially all the dollar tree and Dollarama hacks
Hi Mimi. So glad you stopped by. Things are slow with my cancer diagnosis (see video), but the videos will come when they can. Hope you find some of the other videos handy.
Thank you for the kind comments Bonnie. Much appreciated. Glad you found the video informative. So many ideas to share. Hope you stick around to watch the other videos. Many great ideas in the dollar store and $ saving videos.
Some people may have heard of these or are already using these, but using pool noodles to wrap your quilt(s) when transporting to class, etc. eliminates creases Also, those rubbery things that pedicure places put between your toes to paint your nails are good for holding bobbins to keep the thread from unraveling. Thanks for a helpful video.
I love what you are doing! We need to teach every person interested in sewing! To be able to teach students long distance is great! We have a sewing group at church for making prayer quilts and are now teaching nonsewers to see. We must work with a budget also.
When cutting fabric from self made pattern without seam allowances, I attach one or two button magnets to back of rotary cutter and use magnet side as guide around pattern to cut desired seam allowance. Sewing in Canton, Ohio. Enjoying your videos. Thank you.
I have to say Hannah, that hack is one of my all time favourites. Every day I marvel just a little bit at how handy that little pocket is! Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you around the channel some more!
Hi Angela. Welcome back to the channel. Thanks for returning, watching and commenting! I’m so glad I can help out. It’s funny how many of these things I have stuck in my head. Just trying to be economical in my personal sewing practice and for my classroom. 😊
south central kansas - pretty much the middle of the contiguous US. i've not done any real sewing in a very long while. just working on trying to get back into it. so i'm enjoying all the tips and instructions i'm learning on youtube. so many things i was never taught when i first learned to sew.
Hi MMM. Thanks for stopping by again. It really is like riding a bike. You get better with practice as long as you don’t mind a few wobbles along the way!!😁
We sometimes don’t know what we don’t know. That’s why these videos can be good to just open up peoples eyes to using household items in their sewing practice. Like I said in the video, just trying to make things affordable in the hobby. notions and such can get soooo expensive! Thanks for stopping by.
I put a strip of velcro or hook and loop on the bottom of my foot pedal to keep it from moving. Both parts are good but if you are on carpet the hook part is the best. I also use a dowel and a thumb tack to turn fabric tubes. I put the dowel through the tube and catch the end of the fabric tube at the end and put the thumb tack through the fabric and into the dowel the pull the dowel. It works great. Thanks for your ideas.
Thanks for the ideas. Tool stores sometimes have circular cutting blades in the carpet cutting section, two blades for 3-4$. They serve me as well as high dollar ones.
One of my North Chicago, IL USA hacks is to use DT plastic table cloths for large (ie. flag) patterns. I use different color table cloths to categorize my pattern and I can fold them over opened or closed end pants hangers.
Hi Marshia. This is a great idea. I love the colour organization. Such a great idea to visually find what you are looking for quickly. Thanks for stopping and watching!
Hi Amy, I've been sewing for over 50 years. I'm really enjoying your tips and videos. Just wanted to let you know, I put a magnet under a small china saucer. That works also. Hope you have a Blessed day, Teresa 🧲🧵👍🏼‼💜🌻🦋
I've been using the wider, longer zip ties in place of boning for the last few years! Works great!!! The dollar store nail files are great for filing down the edges after cutting to size. Also, if you need a similar product for wider casings, get some PVC pipe strap at Home Depot. This can be found in the same isle as the PVC pipe. It's used to secure the pipe to wall supports so the pipes don't rattle inside the walls. It works very well and is inexpensive. Not sure if we have Dollarama stores where I live, but I'll have to look into that for some of the items you mentioned. Thanks always for sharing your findings! 🌼
Hi Dori. Thanks for visiting the channel again! So glad to hear that you use some of these hacks already. I’ll have to head over to Home Depot once our lock down is over and do an episode of hacks from there! Thanks for the info on the PVC strapping! See you next week!😁
Tip for the bowls. Pick up a thin piece of metal from the model area of a craft store or hardware store. Cut it into a 2 to 3 inch strip then cover it with mat tack paper use double sided tape to tape the stop to your sewing table then set your magnetic bowl on it. Now it won't tip and spill if bumped into.
Thanks Sally. I figure if I keep taking them from my own experience, they should be somewhat original. Lol. Some viewers tell me they use some of them, but in the most part, they are pretty original. So many more to share! Thanks for stopping and watching. 💜 hope you check out the other hack videos. Might find some new ideas there as well.
Hello there! I live near Macon, Georgia, and I just discovered your videos this month. I saw that you put one of the Purple Thangs in the pocket you attached to the side of the sewing machine...one of my favorite tools!
Hi Cherie, I just got the purple thangs a month or so ago. Still not used to grabbing for them yet. Very handy though when I remember. Thanks for watching. PS. There are so many sewists watching from Georgia. Feels like you might be a sewing state. Lol
A super cool thing I bought at Princess Auto is a magnetic pick up wand. It is the size of a pen but telescopes out to about 3 feet and has a magnet on the end. It's perfect for the inevitable times when all of my pins get knocked to the floor. Watching you from Newmarket Ontario in yet another lockdown.
Hi Jennifer. Welcome to the channel. I know, another lock down, right!? I hope people listen this time! More time for family and hobbies.💜 At school I made a magnet sweeper from a dollar store swifter and magnetic sheets. Comes in hand when someone knocks off a whole case of pins. I think my next hack video is going to have to come from Princess Auto or Home Depot. I don’t have a magnet wand at home. 😩. But it’s going to have to wait until Lockdown is over. Hope you check out the other videos. Thanks for commenting. Hope to see you back here next Sunday!
I wish our Dollar Trees had some of the products you showed, Amy. Lots of great idea for every-day items. I'm thinking of other items I might repurpose for sewing. Tfs. From Cheryl in AZ.
Great tips! Many of these items I had not thought of using for craft. Using contact paper on a pattern is a great tip for when I switch to paper patterns. I have been using clear builder's plastic to trace my patterns onto for many years and but it is bulky to store. Regards Christine 🙋♀️🇦🇺👍🏻😍🤩😘
Hi Christine, So nice to see you back to the channel. Thanks for checking out this weeks video. So glad there are some new ideas in there for you to use. If you can find the clear contact paper, you will be able to store patterns in a much smaller space. I'll see you next week!
Hi Janet. All is well here! In another provincial lockdown, but it’s for everyone’s best. Thanks for stopping by the channel again. Hope you find new info in the video as always. Stay safe! 😁
Great tips. Thank you. The large straws and the zip ties were new to me. So great. I like to use pretty vintage dishes (damaged or not) with magnets for my pins. Just pretty to look at!
Hi Deb. Thanks. So you will find lots of older videos with the same kind of content. I’ve only been on UA-cam since October, so you don’t have to go back too far! 😊
I don’t love sewing so much (sorry), but I have been watching sewing shows forever, even taping some back in the day for my mom. This video was totally worth watching just for the eyebrow razor trick! Thank you.
Good ideas. I’m an experienced “sewist” (about 68 years worth! Yup, I started young and now I’m old). Love sharing tips and techniques and you have a bunch of good ones. Suggestion: remove products from the packaging. It looks more convincing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your feedback. Glad you found some of this new and informative. Everything that I purchased from the store was a copy of things I currently use in my practice. All of these items went to my classroom (I teach sewing in a high school!) 😊
Hi Yvonne. I would be lost without my many magnet bowls. I think I will do a shop at Princess Auto after lockdown is over. To see what else I can find there! Thanks for the info. Glad you stopped by the channel.
You could get a non-slip pad for the bottom of any type of dress shoe or you could just use sandpaper to keep your pedal or anything for that matter from moving around on carpet or linoleum or hardwood floors
Thank you for all the fun tips! The last one you did with the metal ball do you put the magnet on the outside or on the inside because if you turn the bowl upside down you could put a few magnets on the inside, and then you could stick your pins to the outside! I am not sure if that would work but I thought it might be easier to grab the pins!
That’s a great idea Heidi. Thanks for the tip. Be always keep the bowls right side up, but we could add a load of magnets to the inside and magnetize the whole outside. I’m going to try it and see. Thanks for stopping and watching, and for the great tip! 😁
Thanks for all of your hacks!! I'm new here...& I'm from Indiana! Something I use are the removable hooks(Command type) attached to the side of my machine to hold my glasses...they always seem to get buried in a pile on my table otherwise! Lol😎
Thanks for stopping, watching and subscribing Katie. I’m excited too. Just have to wait until after our latest lockdown. We have Princess auto in Canada, some states have Harbour Freight, do you have a franchised auto parts store? I might try a Home Depot video too. 😆
Another ton of ideas :) Thanks all of these ! I know you like to collect ideas, so I wanted to tell you that I use the white super thin dropcloth material- some kind of ployester mix, but not like slippery plastic, for my permanent patterns. I will cut out my final version from this stuff. It is soft and does not crease like paper when you fold it.I have also ironed it, on a cool iron setting, if needed. You can write on it with any marker. This is in the Canadian Dollarama stores, not sure about the US.
Sounds like it might be tyvek dropcloth. Is it like the disposable painters suits? If it is it would probably work pretty well and hold up for a long time.
I usually hot glue magnets to the bottom, how ever many fit. One view suggested trying putting the magnets on the inside and putting the pins on the outside as it might be easier to grab the pins. Thanks for stopping by. 😁
Ty I've learned a lot from these videos. I love the zip tie for corsetry boning tip. How can I customize a dress form to fit my figure? I'm a plus size lady with a high waist & a short torso, so my figure doesn't match a standard dress form. Can you please do a video about customizing a dress form? Thanks
Hi Tracy-Lynn. Great idea. I can totally do this video for you. I’ll have my daughter help- it’s a two person job. We will make it removable. That way you can use the for. Standard if you need, or you can make another. Thanks for stopping, commenting and for the great suggestion.
Thanks for stopping by and watching. Welcome to the channel. Glad you enjoyed the hacks. Please check out the other hack videos on the channel! Hope to see you on Sundays when new videos are uploaded.
Thanks Annalise. The cheapest hardware options for belts and lanyards would be to take old belts from thrift stores, dog collars from the dollar store and reuse the hardware. The other option is to buy on AliExpress or Wish If you have time to wait for the shipping. Check out those videos to see what shopping from those sites is like (I did pick up some hardware in the AliExpress video). Hope this helps. I’ll add these ideas to my video list.
I have always heard not to use magnets around the computerized sewing machine. True or not I do not know for sure cuz I'd be afraid to try. I sure enjoyed all your tips and tricks I wish our dollar store had stuff that yours did thanks again from Indiana
Hi Jeanne. Thanks for coming back to the channel. I have a ton of magnetic bowls in my sewing room. I’ve had a computerized embroidery machine for 5 years with no issues🤪. I have never heard that. If my machine dies some day, I’ll have something to blame other than overuse. Lol. If your dollar store doesn’t have these items, just keep your eyes open for things that might be unconventional but could serve you well in your sewing practice. Hope to See you next week!
Norma from Texas! Thanks so much for stopping and watching. Hope you check out the other videos and click the subscribe and notification buttons. I upload new videos on Sundays. 😊
If you have some kind of consistency or stability you could probably actually Mount Your pedal securely and permanently wherever it is you sit and stitch
A tape runner will gum up your needle if your sew through it. So you would need to place it so that it wouldn’t be in the way. Maybe keep a cloth and rubbing alcohol by the machine. Just in case you need to degum your needle. Good luck
AMY, Thank you, I had not considered the “sticky needle” issue. I will try using the glue tape runner, but, as you suggested I WILL have an Alcohol Wipe handy.😀. Mary 🍀
Great video, love the content! I do have a question though about the nail file tip for leather wallets. What do you use the nail file for? That was unclear to me I'm not sure if I was missing something but I don't know what you use it for...what are you filing?
When edge painting exposed edges, I sand with the file before I paint and between the layers. I use the file instead of sandpaper. Hope this is clear now. I should have a video in the future. 😁 thanks for stopping by to watch.
Thank you. We don’t have one here. I will have to wait until after Covid travel restrictions are lifted. We don’t have in Canada, but my mom lives near the boarder. I’ll have to visit her and go! Thanks for the tip
@@RecoveryTidbits Hi. Thanks for the tip. I was looking at my supply for the classroom and wondering if I should get more. Now I know where to get a cheaper version.
It appears in your video that you cleaned out the entire racks a the dollar store. That seems excessive! Did you actually use everything you bpught????? Wow
There are different schools of thought 1. A sewer who is an artist is a sewist. 2. Sewer is the underground water and waste system - so sewist is just nicer. To each their own!😁

If you have some kind of consistency or stability you could probably actually Mount Your pedal securely and permanently wherever it is you sit and stitch
I can’t make my pedals switch as I move machines into place to use them. Server, coverstitch, domestic, embroidery, etc. Thanks for watching.
Do you know if the “glue tape runner” can be used for temporarily putting binding on a quilt (hold in place and then sew)?
A tape runner will gum up your needle if your sew through it. So you would need to place it so that it wouldn’t be in the way. Maybe keep a cloth and rubbing alcohol by the machine. Just in case you need to degum your needle. Good luck
AMY, Thank you, I had not considered the “sticky needle” issue. I will try using the glue tape runner, but, as you suggested I WILL have an Alcohol
Wipe handy.😀.
Check out Harbor Freight if you have one in your area they are great. Horn Lake, Mississippi
Thank you. We don’t have one here. I will have to wait until after Covid travel restrictions are lifted. We don’t have in Canada, but my mom lives near the boarder. I’ll have to visit her and go! Thanks for the tip

Kansas
Hi Sandee from Kansas. Welcome to the channel. Hope you find some of it informative and/or entertaining!
It appears in your video that you cleaned out the entire racks a the dollar store. That seems excessive! Did you actually use everything you bpught????? Wow
I’m not sure what I bought that cleared out a whole rack, but yes. Everything gets used!
Sooo, a sewist! What was wrong with normal English like "sewer"?
There are different schools of thought 1. A sewer who is an artist is a sewist. 2. Sewer is the underground water and waste system - so sewist is just nicer. To each their own!😁
