Finally, you give me the missing hints for drawing the head according to Loomis. You explaine things that anybody mentioned before in so many drawing videos I have watched so far. Great. Many thanks.
Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial...This is the BEST video I have seen that actually teaches stuff...Believe me, I have watched a ton of them. Guess what...now, I know how to to find the center line by combining intuition with knowledge..Thank you,.
You welcome. At the beginning of your tutorial, the heads are already drawn. Do you have any videos that teaches how to get to that stage? If Yes, please give me the links.. Would like to know how go get the tilt right and how to properly get the side planes right with respect to how wide they should be and their tilt.. Thanks again..
@@invisibArtz That's a great question. Part 3 shows me drawing the heads or placing the centerline. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/tvfpLlBm8y0/v-deo.html
Kevin.. Thanks soooo much.. I will watch all your other videos with respect to the drawing the face features like the nose, eyes and the rest.. And I will keep improving.. Am an Auditor by profession but drawing gives me something that money cannot buy... You give me something that I truly cherish.. Thanks alot..
Thank you! I've watched many videos and none mentioned true perspective.. lately, this has kept me up all night for the past 2 weeks🙄 yes I'm willing to go all in. I've watched all your videos now.. I have been guesstimating the centerline for all 20 Loomis heads I've been practicing😂 I will add the windows now and find the true center line.. sorry I'm just so excited👍
I am so excited I understand the whole centerline thing.. .Now I need to understand how to do a perfect side slice so the centerline that follows that arc isn't off.
I think watching part 3 will help clarify things even more as I draw the Loomis head using perspective. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/tvfpLlBm8y0/v-deo.html
Truly great instruction! As someone doing 100 days of loomis heads, I ran into this problem quickly and the online How to draw a loomis head did not address this perspective middle. So, it's been frustrating without understanding why the centerline appeared so easily in these other videos compared to the ones I was trying to do. Thank you so much. Liked and Subscribed!
Drawimg from the model certainly helps to get a better feel for it. Also studying ellipses helps tremedously. That way if I understand how to draw a 40 degree ellipse for instance and I can draw that same ellipse no matrer the size then it is easier to use a larger 40 degree ellipse to help find the centerline.
This is great, however the one thing that still plagues me is how to determine the degree and positioning of the side ellipse. I understand that you can define the edge of the cube but determining the height of the ellipse (major axis) is where I struggle. In essence depending on the rotation I need to position the top and bottom of the ellipse. In a downward pose there will be more exposed at the top of the sphere (it top space on the circle will be larger than the bottom) for example.
The ellipse if you are using Loomis is 2/3 the height of the circle. For Reilly it's nearly 3/4 the height of the circle. For the Extreme views you are using ellipse in perspective which is tricky. I would visit sketch fab they have a 3d version of Loomis you can practice rotating and drawing. Good luck!
@@KevinMcCainStudios Thanks Kevin. I’m going to try some projection lines and see what I come up with. I think the key is to have the face plane first. Once that is established all other lines should be projectable (I think!!) :-). Back to the drawing board as they say!!!
The measured center of the face plane helps but your use the same ellipse curve (from the side plane)for the perspective center has been really helpful. I’m trying to get consistent projections and your techniques have definitely helped.
I'm a beginner, but there's one thing I don't get here. Isn't the center line (the mid-brow cross) the starting point of the Loomis head? Shouldn't this lesson be applied in reverse as it were?
In You present a great question. The cross is the foundation for the head. However, many artists, especially beginners, don't understand how to use the centerline properly or even how to place it. Before Loomis draws the cross, he has envisioned the head entirely, including the perspective, and then proceeds to buold the head using his vision. This is to make sure the centerline is in the correct place. Though practice of the process this approach you will be better able to visualize the centerline and use it correctly.
How to actually come through the arc after you have calculated the center line through the aquare? I know basic perspective and I`v understood your other head videos, it`s just this video I`m having throuble with.
@@KevinMcCainStudios thank you! I'm studying the loomis head and I can say I'v figured a lot about it, I know exactly a lot of stuff, how to cut the other edge and the tapering of the side plane (like in your loomis head in this video) but the centerline is still little mystery. I want ro really master it then I can create my own characters by going through the real rules of loomis head, thanks again, I'll put notifications on
My AD/H/D (possibly Autistic) brain just can NOT follow/process this! I’m very visually oriented, but the only MATH I can do is addition/subtraction. . . As a child, I had a natural drawing ability, and drawing was my first love in life ; giving me refuge from a traumatic childhood. Now I’m an Elder struggling with disability, poverty and deep Depression. I think a lot about returning to drawing, because even when I go for long periods without doing so, my hand/eye coordination and muscle memory are still there, waiting for me to pick up a pencil. . . Anyhoo, the Loomis and Reilly methods are NOT for every Creator’s brain-and that simply has to be OK! I’m quite fed up with the notion that in order to be a “real” Artist, one has to use these drawing techniques, when nothing could be further from the truth!
Thank you for your comment. People don't have to use Reilly or Loomis. There are other construction methods for reprsentational head drawing. At the end of the day, use whatever method or approach you find works for you. I wish you the best.

This explains PERFECTLY why my center line always seems off. Now I know how to fix it - thank you so much!
I am glad you enjoyed the video. Keep drawing and stay creative!
Another top notch tutorial Kevin, a totally new insight for me and such an important concept to master. Thanks
Hey Simon I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Great tutorial for a beginner like me. How do you determine the size of the elliptical? Does it always have to be 2|3 of the sphere?
For the most part yes.
This is a great tutorial. What a great approach to Loomis Method!!!
Glad it was helpful!
That's so much sir, so cool 👍
