This is amazing, At first I was looking for quick 10-minute videos on Reilly videos and saw this. "Huh, that's 1 hour long" But I started watching and got engrossed for the entire video, time just flew by. The clarity of your explanations and extra tips are top notch.
This guy has some of the best art tutorials. They aren't so short that you learn nothing and every like and metric is well-explained throughout the whole of the video. I genuinely learn and apply a lot of what you share in your tutorials. Thank you sir!
Good lesson, thank you! It looks rather complicated. I have preoblems with putting face features in perspective same like wrapping lines inside the ball of the mouth to know where to place V shape.
This helps so much! Thank you. You describe things very well. I'm sketching this large and hanging it on my wall above my drafting table to refer to when needed. Subscribed!
Thank you for commenting! It takes practice, you will however improve with portraits much more quickly by memorizing Reilly and or Loomis. It really helps.
Wonderful, informative video! You mention a Part Two on refining the features of the Reilly head. Has that video come out yet? I don’t see it anywhere. Thanks!
Hi Kevin. Hope all is well. Your teaching videos are so helpful. The Reilly head reminds me of David Bowie "Thin White Duke " character. I'd love to see you tackle that as a reference , applying the Reilly method or Loomis?
hello Kévin thank you very much for your videos they are too good to explain thank you also for your generosity please Kévin can you make us a video on the head Asaro thank you once again and see you soon🙏🙏
Hello, thank you for watching. I can certain create a Asaro head. Which is actually based on Reilly's rhythms. It will be a little while probably. There are some other videos that need to come first, but I will try do put one up in the next 4 months or so.
@@KevinMcCainStudios Sorry I was confused if you are Brian Knox or Kevin McCain because I saw so many videos from Brian Knox that I really got irretated who is who in your studio.
Great video/ drawing. I followed step-by-step and it got pretty confusing at the mouth and some things with the eyes. The mouth in my drawing looks very strange. It does not look like a three-quarter. I’m not sure why? I was very careful to listen and watch everything you did so I don’t know if I made a mistake or not.
Thank you for watching. I appreciate your comment. In general mouths in a 3/4 view can be difficult because of the foreshortening. The also have to relate to the centerline especially the lips or it won't look right. I have a video on drawing mouths the basic concepts to be aware of, here is the link ua-cam.com/video/lpubqHAgpZU/v-deo.html
Very good explanation. I hate to be the contrarian but I kinda wish it went a bit faster and with less detail. I sped it up to 1.75 and that helped a little. Otherwise very good tips.
That’s funny, I did the exact same thing. I tried 1.5 and that was too slow and then I did 1.75. However, this is a very thorough detailed video and I really appreciate that.
Loomis method is powerful yet very simple to apply. Every time someone mention Reily he mention Loomis but not the opposite. I find the Reily method uncomfortable to draw by it portraits unlike the Loomis method. you can find here on UA-cam a lot of people drawing various portraits by Loomis method but not by Reily. only the basic plate as you did. So i guess here is a challenge, if you will except. Good video, as usual.
Thank you for the comment. I appreciate your thoughts on the video. The reason for peopĺe mentioning you hear Reilly and Loomis is except for the rhythm lines they are very much the same with only very small variances. Most people who use Reilly don't go to through and formally draw the rhythm lines they envision the rhythms as they draw. The other thing is Loomis published 5 books on his thinking and methods. Reilly did not publish at all but rather trained he trained so many professional artists in his time that his methods have been passed down. Bottom line use whichever method works the best for you when you draw.
The reason to bring up Reilly is that the rhythms indicate architectures of the head that needs to be identified and addressed no matter what approach you use. When i was in college I was trained in either Loomis or Reilly just straight construction techniques using the foundations of Bridgeman. That and hundreds of hours examining and drawing the skull. You arrive at the same place using those methods. However in my opinion Loomis and Reilly used in unison help someone to improve more quickly than how I was taught. Which is why I teach them to students.
@@KevinMcCainStudios i can understand that, and in general knowledge is power, but when you come to practical aspect the reily method, for me, is very difficult to draw by. anyway you did mention the fact that Reily didn't publish a thing so maybe, if he had we would be smarter today. and one last thing, Loomis also have the same complex grid line of the face just as Reily (plate 9, Drawing the head book). only he do that in 'square' lines.
@@Ron-wf1tt Yes that is a very nice plate. Those planes were taught by Bridgeman (and others no doubt) and passed down to Loomis. They are very powerful concepts.
I place the end of the ocular cavities. Then come in a little and divide the remaining space into 3 equal parts for the eyes. Then I increase the closest eye just a little and decrease the spaces going back.

Great Sir...
Thank you so much.
Nice! It would be cool if you did the Reilly method from the side view, I'm struggling with that.
There are plans to do that but not in the immediate future.
Very informative video. I hope now I would be able to draw a face better. Thanks.

I have planned. Other than the basic 3/4 and profile portrait that are already listed.
Thank you for watching.
love your videos, out if curiosity which do you prefer Loomis or reilly?
Reilly for realistic drawing. Loomis for cartooning.
@@KevinMcCainStudios Cool, I'm trying to learn both and found your channel, love everything I've watched so far.

This head looks masculine to me . Is there a different method for a female head ?
Not necessarily you just take care to soften the brow and to use rounded softer lines.
PLEASE FINISH THE SECOND PART I WAS DOING GREAT UNTIL YOU ENDED THEN I RUINED IT TRYING TO COMPLETE ON MY OWN LOL😊
Thank you for watching its in the works.
