Timelapse of a Mars Rover

  • Using raw rover imagery and the sound of actual wind on Mars, I painted this little portrait of Opportunity, our faithful little martian rover friend that was lost earlier this year. Losing a rover feels a little like losing a pet. But for all that it accomplished, and for our ability to revel in all the awesome images it collected over its lifetime, its end is bittersweet. Oppy traveled 28 miles on Mars over a span of 14 years - an amazing feat of engineering and human ambition.
    After sifting through thousands of raw Mars images for hours and hours, I have developed a strange sense of Mars as a real place I have been, riding alongside this little rover that could, making laps across rocky martian plains. My hope is this little portrait gives you a glimpse of that same feeling. Still can't believe we put a vehicle on mars that lasted almost 15 years. I don’t even expect my car to run that long. Humans are pretty rad sometimes.
    Thanks to all the people at NASA, JPL, and beyond who made this mission possible. Thanks to Matt Brealey for help collecting raw images. Mireillie Montalvo life is too short. I wanna live another two hundred years, at least. It’s not fair, why do some species of turtles and sharks get to live for hundreds of years but we, the most intelligent species on our planet, average at about 70-80 years? You’d be lucky to reach your 90th birthday, whereas there is a certain type of shark that doesn’t even reach sexual maturity until it is, give or take, 150.

    • @max2themax

      @@ousarlxsfjsbvbg8588 Wait a hundred years to fuck ain't all that pleasant, aye? A shark might get to live through three centuries here on earth but what does it get? Hunting for food in dark waters over and over again, each and every day... That ain't worth a century, let alone three... Everything comes at a price, and having the processing power in our brains to colonise mars is quite worth only having less than a century to me. Of course I'd like some more time, but we can't get everything, at least not yet... Life seems unfair but it sort of balances istelf out in the end. You and I have around 60-80 years if we're lucky, better make some use out of it while we can, huh?

    • @KingSolomonJedidiah
      @KingSolomonJedidiah 5 років тому +11

      @Spartan 506 and see your relatives die , be full of scars from all these years , and spend an eternity by yourself after the universe dies. Youll either become an emotionless machine, or cry in a corner from seeing everything you like eventually end or die. In other words: time itself will fuck you up.

    • @KingSolomonJedidiah
      @KingSolomonJedidiah 5 років тому +4

      @Spartan 506 true immortality IS bad. Would you like staying in an empty universe for all eternity where everything died and only you remained? Prob not .
      If we are talking about relative immortality, then things are completely different. Adding +100 years to a humans life would greatly improve humanity. But billions of added years wouldnt be that nice. This depends on many things like: do other humans gain this enhanced lifespan or just you? Do you keep scars? What will happen to your bones?

      That said, it will certainly be missed, it's one of the longest lived missions ever launched, if we ever catch up with it Killkor it will definitely be worth more than enough to send to a museum XD

    When we get to Mars, we should name one of our settlements there Opportunity, or at least recover the rover and put it in a museum (Mars, or Earth), celebrating the plucky little rover that could and helped us get one step closer to Mars!
