I was a Cadets drum major in 2023 and was going to be in 2024. That organization gave me more life skills and unforgettable experiences than anything I could have ever imagined. I gained interest from my band director who marched platinum in 2015, Jamie. It was the hardest thing I had ever done, and still I wouldn't change that for the world. I was lucky enough to get the head drum major spot at SCV, and I am forever grateful for the home they provided during such a sad time. But Cadets will always be the home team in my heart, FHNSAB.

I marched in 89, Les Mis. It was my dream to march Garfield when I saw them in a videotape back in 1987. I was blessed to get in at 89. The values and work ethic stuck with me even until this day. Forever thankful and grateful to march. If I hit the lottery, I would easily do whatever it takes to resolve this matter and get them back on the field. The experience they provide is the development of extraordinary young adults.

That was the first year I saw a show live and I saw Cadets in metro Atlanta. I wasn’t familiar with Les Miz back then as a high school kid, but having come to love the music of that show and the story, I’ve gone back and watched 89 Cadets multiple times and really appreciate that show more now than back then.

I marched along with you in 1989; I was in the Bluecoats. Our tour had us following CBC quite a lot that year, and I just loved the Les Mis show. I took as much of it in as I could on tour, and I didn't even know the musical at that time. Now, it's my favorite musical that I've seen probably 6+ times. We all felt bad when the Cadets had to sit out the show in Columbus because a huge bunch of the corps got food poisoning. When I first saw On the Waterfront in 1986, I was a big fan and it really pulled me in to drum corps. This is such a sad loss. I'll grieve even the little things, like the Cadets being the first straight-leg marchers, the right foot step-off, and their hallmark "horns down".

@FoCoBuzz yes I appreciate the show now more too. Les Mis, the Broadway show, has great songs and there were a lot of songs that we learned that did not make it in the show. I think we needed an extra week to clean the show a little more but otherwise an excellent experience.

What I've read of the lawsuit, if the Corps used ANY name used by Holy Name Cadets to the current name, they can be sued. The best bet is either rename it clean, or get the rights of a defunct corps name. Ensure nothing can be conceived or construed to be a rebirth of Holy Name Cadets to The Cadets. Just helping spend your lottery winnings😏

    Sorry...long personal post ahead!
I went to UMass the fall of 88 with the sole intention of marching in the Garfield Cadets snare line. I was in the Spahhhhtans in 88 and saw that beautiful production mature all summer and fell in love with the corps. One day I slide into Thom Hannum's office at 1988 UMass band camp to ask about auditions for Garfield, and said, "I left Garfield." My heart sunk! Here I am at UMass as a MusEd major, and the reason I came was to learn from Thom and make Garfield. I figure, I can learn from Thom at school...how to become a better player (and more importantly as a person), and I can audition for the Cadets of Booger County, or whatever whcky name they chose.
I went to war with myself, and created daily habits...I learned how to LEARN. How to shut my mouth. How to LISTEN to Thom Hannum. I learned to grow up.
I went to the first ever "Cadets of Bergen County" camp at Teterboro VoTec. What a dump that "facility" was. But it was sacred ground to me. The rehearsal spot where so many of the great shows of the 80s were birthed! I was thankful to be there amongst the Gods!
I go get a drum off the truck, which was still painted "Garfield Cadets" on it! I go in, and am introduced to the new caption head, the young snare tech from the last 3 seasons. Some young guy barely older than me, and he was going to run the Garfield Cadets percussion section? This guy would go on to become my teacher, my mentor, my trusted second father, and after I aged out a dear colleague and a close friend! I met Tom Aungst. A fiery tall skinny 26 year old guy with a mustache who would change my trajectory, as well as the lives of so many others under his guidance and leadership. I owe that man more than I can repay. Anyone who ever was in the Cadets since 1985 as a student of his knows exactly what I am talking about.
After 3 camps , I was officially in the line. I worked my tail off that summer. 5 vets in the snare line, and 3 of them marched 87! Add in two crazy Canadians, and me, and that was the gumbo! Those guys were ferocious and NEVER let up. They always pushed each other to be better, and Willy Higgins as the section leader in his ageout year was a gift. He is the frigging MAN. One of the best snare techs walking today, and he taught 90 to 98. A legend!
Becoming a Cadet, I learned what it was to be drawn into a team, find gears in me I didn't know I had. I learned to TRUST from one of the truly greatest teachers to ever play the game. Tom Aungst kicked our asses like we owed him money. No joke. But we had FUN doing it! We loved the work, we loved Tom for showing us the relentless pursuit of perfection and how to achieve it. We BELIEVED. That summer changed me. Being a Cadet altered my course forever, and all for the better. I love the corps, my time there, and the people I was with!
As far as how it ended? Whew. I am sad for the young people who will never know what it is like to put on that Superman suit, that beautiful maroon and gold West Point uniform. I am glad the stench is over. I wish it was simply a financial budgetary situation, but.....all things are born, live and die. Sometimes quietly, sometimes messily.
I spent the summers of 89, 90 and 91 in the Cadets drum line, and the lessons I've learned, habits I've created, and the friends made along the journey have made the ride so very worth it.
For Holy Name Shall Always Be! WE carry the banner now. All the alumni. It's us. Let's cherish what we had, what we did, and how we can help encourage kids to march somewhere....anywhere where they can become truly better young adults!

Marched phantom in 95. We were ranked around 5th all season, so we usually had just enough time to put horns away to go in and watch the last show or two, which was usually Cadets or Cavaliers. Both amazing shows in unique styles and were a pleasure to watch, if not causing a bit of jealous anger.

I have marched two years but didn’t feel i found the home i had found with my highschool program. Going into my third year i’m optimistic about what my experience will be like and hope that at the end of the summer i will be able to come back and affirm to everyone that I found a place that feels like home. That way others who are looking have a place to go.

Every time the Cadets were a topic for discussion, you were the most eager to talk about them and it always hyped me up. It's terrible to see the Cadets fall from grace so hard, especially with my desire to march with the team this year. I fell in love with them after seeing them in a contest back in '82 when they won their first world championship. I'll never forget the Appalachian Spring, West Side Story, or the Candide shows where they were the first corps to three-peat!!! 42 years and 10 world championships later and they're still my favorites!! I marched 88, 89, 90. I can't really enjoy current DCI. The uniforms are replaced with body suits. There is so much body movement. I watch old drum corps and love it still. I LOVE the uniforms, LOVE the traditional drill with moderate body work. Being a Cadet is hands down the best experience of my life. I truly don't know if I could have got that anywhere else. Watching the Phantom Regiment practice during the summer of ‘78, inspired me to learn how to play the snare drum so that I could march in a drum corps…when The Hawthorn Muchachos needed marching personnel to keep them in business in order to field a corps, my brothers and joined…unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, but thankfully The Cadets were recruiting to field a corps for the ‘79 season…It was a dream come true…I stayed on until after the ‘84 season to serve my country in the US military…the Cadets taught me a lot about teamwork, effort, attitude, and perseverance…lessons that still are in use today…sometimes I wondered if they were competing in 2024, would they have finished the season as world champions once again?? -FHNSAB ✌️🎤🥁

I have another story. One year we were rehearsing in Kansas. All day I heard this tinny noise in my ear like a radio was playing drum corps music. It was 100% humidity that day obviously. It had to be another corps. That night at the show I talked my cohorts in the cadets. They said they heard the same thing… a barely audible hornline and drum line …. So we talked about where we were rehearsing that day. We were 7 miles apart.

When I heard ‘82 I was in love. 83 was just as good and a bunch of us from Dutch Boy in Kitchener Ont. went down to march in 84. I was 16 and learned most of the show in camp. Sadly my parents didn’t support me and I couldn’t march that summer. I love that 84 show and am disappointed I didn’t get to do it. In ‘85 I was determined and went back and managed to march the season.
It was the hardest thing I ever did. I was skilled enough to be a good cadet but I had a lot to learn about work ethic. I was far from the perfect Garfield Cadet, but I pushed through and made it to the other side.
I learned what hard work, perseverance, and excellence was all about. I learned I could achieve anything I put my mind to.
Thank you Garfield. One of the proudest moments of my life, 40 years later. ❤

It saddens me to know that no other young people will learn and benefit from the Cadet way. With the corps folding, it is like a death in the family, and all the little details of my life on tour and the people I marched with 40 years ago come flooding back to me. I am so grateful to have had that experience, but knowing I will never again see the maroon and gold Cadets taking the field again is like a gut punch.

I just heard about this today - totally missed the news. I’ve a huge BD fan and have not liked all Cadets shows but they did have some of the most iconic moments and shows in DCI history and I did like many and loved some. The first year I ever watched on PBS was 1987 and their Appalachian Spring show was fantastic.
As DCI morphs over the last decade into something unrecognizable from its roots, losing the Cadets is another brick crumbing from the wall of DCI’s heritage. They were one of the main, classic, “big corps” basically the entire three and a half decades I’ve followed DCI and this is just a shocking and heartbreaking development.
Of the top corps for so long, really only BD is a regular contender anymore. It’s just not the same competing with Crown and Bluecoats - with each group doing wacky field theater and having largely eschewed their classic looks and identities - as it was competing with Cadets, Cavies, SCV, and Phantom for the championship, all with shows you instantly remember from the era when drum corps was drum corps.

Only marched in 2021 as a rook-out. Was originally interested in Crown, due to playing arrangements of their 2013 show my freshman year in high school a year later. Had the audition stuff for Crown 2020 in my grasp until the virus hit. Became a fan of DCI in 2015 watching 88 and 95 scouts( I KNOW! I KNOW!). Oddly enough, I never truly liked the 2019 Cadets show. But one day in January of 2021, saw an ad that said audition for Cadets for $21. I thought to myself, why not? I told my then Assistant band director at Virginia State University, who believe it or not, talked with the last brass caption manager, Doc Stratton, wanted to have HBCU band members march DCI along with other managers from different corps! Long story short, I take all 3 audition rounds with a quickness and signed my contract to march with the corps (NO JOKE) on April Fool’s Day. Before that span of events, I was actually emotional because I wanted to get myself healthier to keep myself from worse conditions, and the corps was the last push I needed. When I got to May camp, I realized that I never truly held a contra tuba before, being used to sousaphone and such. It was a struggle at first, but I got stronger each day. Throughout my time there, I developed friendships and connections with different members and found out that 4 of us were members of HBCUs, so it was pretty cool to bond with people that go through similar things at their campuses. It was a tough yet rewarding 2 months, but it all came to a culminating end when finals day happened. There was a saying that Doc said that resonated with us, "Do your job." I knew I was going to cry, but it wasn't worth it to waste the tears in the early part of the day, but after finishing the last performance, Doc told us that phrase, and something in me released the tears in that parking lot. I flat out ugly cried, but it was worth it, because The Cadets changed my life. Fast forward to this past season, and I was introduced as low brass intern turned tuba tech. 2nd best summer of my life. All that I'm trying to say with this long of a comment, is that I probably would not be in the position that I'm currently in-getting a master's degree-had it not been for The Cadets.

The Cadets and the Bluecoats were my heroes in high school, I was never able to match because of money but I’ve always been a fan. It’s devastating knowing what was going on. All I’ve gotta say is fuck GH. The culture of silence and abuse he supported and grew is the reason the Cadets are dead now. This is the end of an era for DCI, and hopefully the beginning of a new one. But for the vets, GH is not the Cadets, no matter how hard he tried to be. You are the Cadets, and just like with the 27th Lancers, the Bridgemen, Star of Indiana, and VK, your success will never die.

Never marched with The [Garfield] Cadets. That is the name I will always use in referring to that formerly great corps, dating back to my youth in New Jersey. It has now gone the way of the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights, St. Lucy's Cadets, et al.

The history of the Cadets stands strong in front of any of the accusations. There are no winners in the case as we all lost out. Cadets in all thier names gave us amazing shows, cutting edge, and pushed the boundaries for many to be part of the greatness that is Cadets.

I can’t “like” this video because it seems disrespectful to the situation. While I’ve not always been happy with the direction their leadership has pushed DCI, (IMO artificially redefining the activity by eliminating boundaries that set it apart), I would never in a million years wish this on the organization. Especially the alumni who worked so hard to maintain the tradition. The best uniforms on the planet (back when they still held to that tradition) and a dedication to excellence that spans generations.

As an alumnus of 3 years myself, I would never ever have wished this on my home team, The Cadets. With the news that they would never field a corps again, I wanted to share my journey getting into the Cadets AND the major positive impact the organization had on my life. At a funeral, one often shares fun and impactful stories or memories of the one that passed; I was simply doing the same for the organization that shaped my life!

Suing the corps into extinction isn’t going to help anyone, and it’s going to hurt thousands of past and future members who no longer have a legacy. The Cadets are gone. • @Rocdar12
      @Rocdar12  2 місяці тому

Unfortunately not. That’s what they tried to do here. CAE was the new organization. YEA was the old. The lawsuit is designed to go after anything that sounds like or is a new iteration of the Cadets. It will never end. That’s why the Cadets ended.

    • @Bosshole
      @Bosshole 2 місяці тому

If a line can be drawn to the cadets organization in anyway, the new org will be pulled into the lawsuit. So any new corps is a new corps. Certainly a new corps could be fielded that honors the Cadets style, but it won’t be the Cadets.

DCI as a business model is not ideal for inflation, fuel cost, insurance the ridiculous fee for members more will follow chap 11
SCV found a way to pull out of the mess cost now from 90s era the extended staff of spot medicine and professional entertainment engineers (which should be members) staff from Vegas shows like Cirque made this activity expensive and most college offer similar experience
