  • This is not the way you want to get a drill in for repair.
The customer obviously tried to fix it first but couldn't get it rebuilt.
Had to first rebuild the drill to find out what was wrong with it. Turned out it was a hammer mode problem. The drill would not come out of hammer mode.
This can happen with any drill, especially to see it with the dewalt drill.
It happen on the makitas from time to time also. Sadly, it's normally not repairable as the parts are not available from makita. They only sell the gearbox as one whole unit. Which js a real pain.
Luckily, I had a doner machine I was able to use for parts.
The problem was a linear thrush bearing that had failed.
Sometimes, they can be rebuilt, but this one had broken both the cup washers holding the steel balls.
The only option you have when this happens is to remove the thrush bearing and hammer ring completely. so there is no more hammer mode.

I found myself writing a sentence saying that "I can't believe someone would send in a drill in so many pieces"...... and then realised what I was saying!!! Of course people do things like that. It's probably healthier for the drill having a professional re assembling the carnage that was created. The thing I really can't believe is how few missing parts there were!! I've never seen the hammer selection side of the drill dismissed before. That was really cool to see. I am very, very, glad that the owner of that drill hasn't seen that part dismantled either..... that's enough to give you nightmares 😂😂😂 Very cool video, thanks 👍👍👍👍👍

Dean. I love your speed of thought on these videos.
You literally weigh up your diagnosis in 5 seconds, formulate your plan, immediately and then execute the plan at speed.
There must be a description for your personality type. You brain is completely uncluttered by analysis. Consequently. As a viewer it’s very therapeutic watching your videos . As they are devoid of ambiguity or mental gymnastics. Just pure uncomplicated process with minimal commentary.
I love the way you sling the fixed tool down on your bench once you are finished. Much the same as a gladiator in Ancient Rome would treat an opponent.
    Great videos. Keep them coming!

There is a drawing on the makita page... however not one of the gearbox itself, brutal.

Thanks mate! Your video helped me see why my drill wasn't switching gears. I'd lost the little pins that hold the ring gear, and hadn't even noticed. I made some more and put it back together. Works like it's supposed to now. Much appreciated for unintentionally showing me the problem.

Can the unit be reassembled without the hammer function? I would prefer to retain the drill and use it as a simple drill driver. It seems so terrible to simply toss it in the bin and the cost of a new gear housing is basically the cost of a new tool. I appreciate any feedback.

Hello Dean. I hope you can give me a hint. A had same problem and I did the same. Took it apart and assembled back together, but now when i want to fasten a drill bit, I can't. It doesn't have that ratchet thingy. I don't know how to describe that, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Which part of the gearbox is responsible for that feature.

I had this problem eventually learned how the mechanism worked but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it was sticking in hammer mode. I remember the bearing (that you pointed out as the problem) being questionable and now I know was the problem thanks to you, but don't understand how it keeps it in hammer mode. Wouldn't it prevent it from being in hammer mode if it's collapsed?

Did you reapplied the grease inside of the gearbox after the video or you left those 2 blobs on the brake pins?

The gear box takes very little grease. A little blob is all that it needs
