Screw came out easy enough, but rapping the hex wrench with the mallet just would not break the chuck loose. (My chuck is wobbling a bit even after I checked the screw to be sure it was tight when I reinstalled it).

The only thing I am not sure is real is how he easily unscrews the screw. I have a drill and I am having hell of a time even getting it to move

If the clutch is really whooped this method of removing the chuck doesn't work because the clutch just skips, any recommendations?

How in the heck do you get that Chuck screw out?! I know it is reversed threaded...but mine is STUCK and risking having the head stripped ;(

    • @payne51558

Wow..I got it out but wasnt easy! Had to use my Makita impact driver and my vice and just pray to the screw gods that it wouldnt snap or strip out the head!

Now having fun w/ the chuck itself. Not as easy as putting in an allen wrench and giving it a wack with a hammer so far....

Well ended up taking the entire OLD gear box apart Placing the allen wrench in a vice with chuck clamped on it, and used a small PIPE WRENCH to get the chuck off the old assembly!

@@payne51558 I just smashed the old gearbox to pieces till I could get grips on the end of the shaft 👍

I took the housing apart before the chuck. Gonna do this replacement but not entirely sure if thats the problem. Can I take the gear assembly/chuck off together, then separate? Or do I need to put this backtogether, just to take it apart again?

if hitting the alllen key doesn't work put the long end of the allen key in the drill, the short end in a vice and rotate the drill by hand. it should break loose.

Question: Can I convert my Makita regular drill into hammer drill since hammer drill function is part of the gear assembly? Your reply is much appreciated.

I should have watched this video prior to disassembly. There’s two metal tabs that fell outbid who knows where and it may now be a paper weight 🤣

Interesting video however the gearbox for my drill costs 40% the cost of a new drill and bearing (pun intended) in mind that the rest of the drill is worn too and potentially liable to fail, I think it would be smarter to replace the whole drill.

@Mr Jingles I bought another used makita drill, much more heavy duty for 45 euros and still works perfect for one year now. I have many cordless tools LXT series and works fine.

Although the motor does not supply electricity directly, it stops working intermittently. he's taking a tour.

Sorry, it's impossible to get past step one. Soaked the damn screw in wd40 and break free for a few hours. When that didn't work I tried using a Makita impact driver to loosen it. That didn't work so I tried my impact wrench. I broke a few flathead screwdriver heads that way. Finally stripped out the screw head. Maybe the video is wrong and it is not a reverse threaded screw. I put way more time into this than the thing is worth. Should have just tossed it in the trash and bought a new one. Returning the gear box.

I hear you, just did mine and fortunately the screw came loose. It was a left hand thread that I used my small impact on before I messed the center screw up trying to loosen it with a screw driver. Patience is the key when replacing on older drills that have been used a lot.

It’s reverse threaded. I abused my drill for years. Came out rather easy

Yes, definitely reverse threaded and was able to remove mine with just a plain screwdriver, 😅
