  • Here we show how to replace the Micro Switch on a Shark. This is applicable for any Shark vacuum that has a single brush roll. The Shark Duo's that have two brush rolls, are very different and this repair will not apply to them. Some of the models this will work with include NV350, NV351, NV352, NV401, NV402, NV450, NV501, NV502, NV503, NV500W, NV22, NV80, NV400, NV650, NV650W, NV651, NV652, UV410, UV420, UV440, UV440, UV540
    It is very common for the brush roll on Shark vacuums to cease to turn on. Many people often assume it is the belt. The belt very rarely gives out on Shark uprights, more commonly it is an electrical issue. This is the Micro Switch.

    the microswitch activates when the handle is dropped down. it also looks like it activates the LED lights. So if the LED lights work, doesn't that mean the microswitch is good?

    Thanks for the video. My switch tested okay. Then I saw that the white wire connected to the switch, was almost completely severed.
    I soldered it back together and now it's working like a champ.
    The black wire was a little pinched,so I cut it and soldered it too, while i had everything opened up.
    Thanks again 👍

    Excellent video, thank you. Navigator 370. MicroSwitch and wires checked out OK. FWIW, checked voltage on the main On/Off/Roller switch - both positions read about 7v. Seemed the roller position should be higher voltage. Being lazy and not wanting to take the whole top section apart, I soaked the top of the switch with silicon spray, a few times, letting it soak down in, exercised the switch rapidly. Now the roller does come on. I'll call it a fix, we'll see how long that lasts.

    That's what drives me nuts about the Vacuum Wars channel. He only shows how well a vacuum works out of the box, but doesn't spend any attention on how long the vacuum will clean correctly before it ends up breaking something and being set outside on the curb for trash pickup.

    • @vacuumsrus
      @vacuumsrus  Рік тому +6

      I agree with that. However, in that channels defense they do have some of better performance testing I've seen. He's very transparent in how the testing is performed. We have been battling consumer reports for the last decade and a half over their performance metrics. They refuse to explain how they test the machines. This wouldn't be a problem except they "test" identical machines which are marketed as different models due solely to a color difference and some how come up with different performance results. The same issue will have an identical unit rated as #2 highest performing and #11 on the same chart. The only difference is it's a different color and says "pet" in the model. Vacuum wars doesn't pretend to know some thing about how long the units will last, or the companies dedication to providing repair components in to the future, just how well they run when he opens the box. But I agree with you, most people don't understand what a review channel is for and how it's monetized ;P

    The Shark vacuums I've owned were not only excellent in function but durable as well. Watching UA-cam videos of different peoples vacuums illustrates how poorly a lot of people take care of their belongings. Many vacuums that are talked about seem to have been used relentlessly and put aside unloved. My vacuums in comparison are used but cared for at the same time. Remember, the reviews of vacuums or anything else often over reflect the owners who neglect their machines then complain that they are poorly made or unreliable.

      I think it's a combination of both. If you do slam your cleaner around the place it will not help. However I have just finished repairing a non-functional brush head of my Shark Cordless duoclean. The cause was one snapped and one nearly snapped power cable at the join where the shaft pivots around the brush head. Given the design run of the cable this kind of fault is almost inevitable. Unfortunately I couldn't get the joint apart as it is not designed to be repairable so I had to put in an external run. In general getting the product apart to repair it was not simple. This is poor design and results in a lot of waste. Our Shark gets very little use as we have hard floors and is stored in a cupboard.

    "If you get no continuity open and closed your switch is bad and go ahead and replace it"
    I've just tried this.
    For me, Closed = continuity, open = no continuity. I'm guessing this is a better indicator of a faulty switch rather than both open and closed sharing the same result.
    I'm going to gamble on ordering a chip and seeing if I can get it in.
    I certainly wouldn't have tried this without this video but in the Shark Duo, the chip is clearly visible on the side of the machine so it has got to be worth a go

    Good video. We have had our Shark for about a year with no problems but...
    I was surprised at your use of soldering flux. Flux is used when making a solder joint. It renders the surfaces clean so the solder binds.
    The solder for electrical work has a rosin core flux.
    No harm done but it seems you are going to a lot of needless extra work. :)

    • @mikew1231
      @mikew1231 2 місяці тому

      I've found that using flux makes it easier to solder even with rosin core. My theory is the flux displaces air and lets the components not cool as you're soldiering with maybe a 10 watt iron.

    Just watched your video "Why You Cannot Repair Your Shark...") and this came up. We owned 3 Shark SV780N model units--a handheld. We loved them. Then over time, two began acting up. They cut out at first and then finally quit. I knew it was the switch in the handle and assumed I could easily replace it. NOT. The switch is mounted onto the circuity of a tiny electronic board which is itself mounted into the vac handle. Burn marks on the boards suggested the switch was not to blame. New boards were not available. I trashed the two for lack of a simple repair. When replacing batteries, I cleaned the insides which acquired a lot of micro dust. Cleaning done so I would not be wearing dust as I worked on them or inhaling it. I ended up being quite mad about the whole business as one cannot make repairs on what was a popular vac. I have been soldering since 1968 (With the same Wen Iron, now outdated) but have to say, circuitry is now beyond my skill unless I buy new hot air "Blower" type irons I see used on computer electronics.

    Great content, thanks for the video. Our NV800W DuoClean vacuum was abused a bit by the family. It had been used for awhile and not cleaned out. There was major build up on both rollers that was creating a lot of resistance and causing the them to stop and the brush roll light to turn red. Once cleared, the roller still did not spin. So, I opened things up and the micro switch test good but I can see sparks on the motor brushes as it tries to spin. Obviously, it wore out from being overworked. I searched the part number printed on the motor and found several outlets to purchase a replacement. Maybe this will help someone else. I'm a electronic repair tech also.

    • @Devil-Made
      @Devil-Made Місяць тому

      I hope you don’t mind but I’d like to ask you a question. The creator of the video doesn’t seem to respond to questions (understandable - it IS his business after all), and since you said you’re a tech I thought I’d give this a shot.
      I’m not an electrician, but I’m not unfamiliar with electronics basics either. My Shark Navigator Lift Away brush roller didn’t come on one day, but after turning it on/off it worked fine - for about a month - before the roller died completely. I found this video and figured this HAD to be the problem. I took it apart easily enough and the belt looks good, no burnout around the motor, control panel seems okay - no obvious issues. So I ordered this switch and just installed it. And…nothing.
      Now, I’ve got a couple caveats. First off I don’t have a multimeter. My old one broke and I’ve gone so long not needing one and didn’t want to buy one just for this (especially since I KNEW the switch was the problem 🙄), but I just ordered one and once it arrives I’ll probably have a much clearer understanding of the problem. Secondly, my soldering irons are crap. One simply doesn’t get hit enough and the other has probably been mistreated by myself before I really understood how to properly use it. So it’s a pain to use. I know I didn’t burn out the new switch, nor did I cross my wires, but I did kind of slack off when it came to cleaning the old solder from the wires. They weren’t goopy and obviously bad, but they weren’t as clean as I would’ve liked. I just couldn’t get the old solder to wick off properly, and since I was afraid of burning out the new switch I was perhaps too careful when I left some old solder on the wires. That said, the wires were shaped nicely, the new solder looks great, and they’re shrunk tight.
      Could this be my issue? In your opinion, of course. It’s all I can think of. Could a little bit of leftover slag really create this large of a fault? Again, it wasn’t THAT bad. I wouldn’t have put the wires back on if I thought they were too covered with slag to function, but I’m honestly not sure how much slag is too much in this case. (I know slag probably isn’t the correct term - I was a welder and it’s the term that comes to mind).
      If it’s not the slaggy wires, do you have any idea where I should look next? I’ll test everything when I get the multimeter, but besides the motor I don’t know what else to even look at. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
      I guess I just want to know if leaving some slaggy solder on the wires would be enough to prevent a good connection, or if I’m thinking about it too much and as long as the metal touches metal it should function.
      If you could help me with that I’d be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

Be careful to mount the new switch onto the mini lugs molded into the machine. When replacing the side onto the machine be sure that the slider on the body of the vac is in the forward position. Loved the video, my problem turned out not to be the micro switch, I ended up taking the upper body apart (numerous security star screws) to chase down lack of electricity to micro switch. The wires coming from on off switch for the micro switch go to a small white junction box that feed electricity through the round plug that mates with the power head. The small white box had opened up leaving the wires move away from the mating position.I repositioned wires and epoxies the box clised.

    I did replaced the switch but that didn’t work. I also replaced the motor because there was a lot of black powder. Still didn’t fix it. Only the motor is not working so the roller doesn’t rotate but the vacuum is suctioning. What else could it be?

    I have a shark navigator uv540 lift away. I removed screws to take off plate to remove brush roller to clean it. Two rectangular shaped bars fell out and didn't see where they go to put everything back together. Any help would be much appreciated! They appear to have something to do with weight.

    • @vacuumsrus
      @vacuumsrus  Рік тому +1

      Riccar and Sebo have the best parts availability. Mid and entry Riccar are easy DIY repairs. Sebo is easy to repair if you know the product. They aren't really easy to just sort of "figure out". Miele is like a rubix cube.

    If the problem is intermittent,is it still the switch or a dirt build up?

    • @vacuumsrus
      @vacuumsrus  Рік тому

      Could be either actually. A significant build up of hair could cause the shut off sensor to kick. This is particularly prevalent in their so called "tangle free" designs. Which is sorta funny.

    I was vacuuming and heard small popping noises with a burning smell. Now the roller won't spin. Is this likely to be the motor burnt-out? Many thanks

    • @vacuumsrus
      @vacuumsrus  Рік тому

      That is the most likely case unfortunately. I would still recommend finding your local vacuum shop and see if they will take a look at it. There is a chance it might be repairable and they will be able to assess that for you.

      @@vacuumsrus thank you! I bought a whole replacement (used but working) bottom end and it still won't roll or light up even with the switch on carpet mode. Very frustrating as this means it's not the motor or micro switch!

    • @vacuumsrus
      @vacuumsrus  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately, that likely means its at the end of its life. Sharks are considered disposable vacuums for this exact reason. I would recommend looking into Sebo's or Riccar's. Both of these are solid brands that make vacuums that are easily maintainable and repairable.

    • @SamuelHorler
      @SamuelHorler Рік тому

      @@vacuumsrus what a shame! Everything is disposable nowadays I guess. Our LG flatscreen died a year after its warranty period. Now our shark 1 year after its warranty. Criminal for them to do this (I believe its planned) thanks again for your responses and time ✌️
