Lian Pin Koh: A drone's-eye view of conservation

  • Ecologist Lian Pin Koh makes a persuasive case for using drones to protect the world's forests and wildlife. These lightweight autonomous flying vehicles can track animals in their natural habitat, monitor the health of rainforests, even combat crime by detecting poachers via thermal imaging. Added bonus? They're also entirely affordable.

One of the best and clean talks on the use of Drones.
I wish I had seen this 10 years back .
I wonder where these projects have reached ???
And I wonder if I can offer a Drone service for the work ?

Great to know about Conservation Drones being used in Nepal. Did you know? > There was ZERO Rhino poaching in 2013 in Nepal.
Another great thing is, uses of drones being diversified. Hopefully we don't hear 'Drone attack on Afganistan or Iraq or Siriya......etc. anymore !

Unfortunately until the FAA gets it's act together "commercial" use of "drones" in the USA is a VERY gray area. The FAA considers it illegal even though they just lost a lawsuit trying to fine a drone operator for using it "commercially". The world is changing, the FAA has had over 12 years to have things in place... and now the technology is way ahead of the FAA. I feel a lot of uses will be dampened/put down when the FAA comes out with it's rulings later this year...

Great to see such a positive application of open source technology. I think credit should also go to the Ardupilot, APM Plane, Mission Planner developers and the DIY Drones community.

Combo conservation drone with attack drone and you got a good way to deal with poachers.

he uses an apm 2.6 autopilot and a $100 cheap airframe, so basicly im a 14 year old kid and have been into this stuff for 2 or 3 years and i know as much as this guy, i think its great what theyre doing but the could build theyre own airframe and have a gimbal maybe to make it steadier. :)

Equip the drone with a deplorable quadrocopter to piggy back for the long distance and you could expand the sphere of use. Even moving under the canopy and reconnecting to the drone in flight to piggy back again. You could video pilot the quadrocopter using the drone as an antenna to reduce the weight on the quadrocopter.

Haha! I'm building one now! It won't have GPS, because I will control it by myself. Of course, I could add it if I wanted to. Without a camera, everything cost me around ~250$. It is a quadcopter. (You can see how one motor performs on my channel)

These are not drones. Drones are orange airborne targets for airplane to shoot down. These are UAVs or RPVs. These are exactly like the military kind, just carrying a different, but similar payload.

Im 13 and I could build one cheaper with the same equipment. And it was a bit unsettling how he was describing them as drones instead of a uas.

Interesting concept. But what if the poachers also start using them or get access to the imagery? They will know exactly where to look.. And if a poacher is spotted, will they be there on time to catch this person?

  • @YasminRasyid

If the poachers also utilize this same method, then it would be exposing the animals to more dangers.

    Drone - flies itself,
    An RC aircraft is piloted
If anyone would like to know, the 'auto pilot' he is using is called the 'ardu-pilot' a spin-off board from the popular 'arduino' project board but made for milti-copters and planes.

I guess that's the problem with pretty much every technology. Some people will use a tech to do good things, others to do bad. However I think it's fair to say that the access, desire and use of this particular tech will remain within the conservation community for a while, and if one day poachers start using the tech...well I guess conservationists will come up with new ideas to stop them. That's the way it goes, sadly.

  • @love51511

This is a fantastic use of this technology. This can be the future of conservation.
