    The most inovative, modern and influencive composer of 19th century who made the most magical harmonies, inovative forms, structuries and evokating passages and tender romantic melodies. Also man, whose pianism and solidarity knew no bounds!

    A nice video, Paul. Thank you. I'm not a musician; but, ever since "getting" the piano sonata, I've become more and more fascinated by Liszt's music and his thoughts and ideas. Recently, I've been getting to know his 'Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude', the 'Années de pèlerinage', and 'La Lugubre Gondola'. All blessed and deeply meditative pieces that are rewarded by repeated listening and contemplation. I think that Liszt must now rank within my top 5 classical composers of all-time.

    • @therealrealludwigvanbeethoven
      @therealrealludwigvanbeethoven 2 роки тому +2

      This has to be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever read. Not only did Liszt's compositional genius completely outshine Taylor Swift's, but he also influenced posterity to a far greater extent. Liszt directly foreshadowed Impressionism and the musical schools of the early 20th century with works such as the Bagatelle sans tonalité, Les Jeux D'Eaux À La Villa D'Este, Nuages gris, Csárdás Macabre, and the Three Apparitions (which were composed in the early 1830s!). Debussy idolized Liszt and openly adopted elements of his style (especially the aforementioned Jeux D'Eaux and Nuages gris). Liszt also influenced his contemporaries, most notably Wagner; in fact, he taught the latter about the art of orchestration. Liszt's harmonic innovations propelled him to the forefront of European Romanticism - Swift never reached such a level, nor did she influence anyone to the extent Liszt did.
      Liszt's symphonic poems had a major impact on the history of music - some of the most important composers of the 19th and 20th centuries modeled their orchestral styles after his, and the great Russian orchestrators (especially Rimsky-Korsakov) took after his compositional techniques.
      Not to mention, Liszt's capacity to bring out novel effects from the piano to evoke orchestral instruments (consider S.137, S.139, S.140, S.141, S.126, S.464) eclipsed hers.
      Liszt's melodies are more beautiful, his harmonies more innovative, his counterpoint bolder, his orchestration more inspired (as if Taylor Swift even did any), and his music more substantial. In her works, the variation is minimal and she repeats the same melody over and over again. The bravura and repetition in Liszt's opera fantasies only serve to enhance the music. Reminiscences de Don Juan, for example, uses octaves to convey the power of the final damnation scene from the original opera; Reminiscences de Norma's bravura helps enhance Liszt's inimitable skill of thematic transformation/combination.
      The Hungarian Rhapsodies were composed to celebrate Liszt's native culture and are packed with interesting, fantastical melodies (his Romanian and Spanish Rhapsodies, as well!). They're anything but repetitive; and some of the greatest jewels of the piano repertoire can be found in them. Have you heard his Lieder? They are some of the most beautiful works a person can hear. Listen to Die Lorelei (you'll hear one of the most notable examples of a pre-Wagner tristan chord, though it doesn't function the same way as the one Wagner himself used).
      I also recommend listening to all of the Années de Pèlerinage; true masterpieces are within. Liszt's music can be pensive, triumphant, potent, resplendent, aureate, powerful, subtle, and utterly vibrant at times. I urge you to reconsider your view of Liszt, for he is one of the most crucial figures in music history!
      Liszt had no "limits"! He was, along with Wagner, the most forward-thinking composer of the 19th century, and his grand compositional scope ranged from folk music to sacred vocal works, and everything in between. If anyone in this case is/was limited, it's Taylor Swift... not Liszt.
      Liszt's music contains some of the most fascinating content one can hear.
      Please... take a deeper dive into the works of the great Franz Liszt, for he was one of the most interesting people who ever lived.
