    I'm personally a big fan of the pull in Grime. It can interrupt big enemy attacks, move platforms, and later on launch the player through the air. Very versatile and not something I've seen anywhere else.

    I am shocked that you had 2 entries for unique bow abilities but didn't include Unworthy's Spirit Bow. It's a late-game item that teleports you to the location the arrow lands, granting an immense freedom of movement when previously your only vertical movement was falling, using ladders, and using elevators. It also precedes both of the arrow-based abilities in this video by a few years, so if any game should have had an arrow-theme entry it should have been Unworthy.
    Some other unique metroidvania abilities:
    - the Soundmaker: Yoku's Island Express is already unique as a pinball metroidvania, but the Soundmaker is its most unique item. It's mostly used to get the attention of NPCs and blow pinwheels to gain fruit, but the real value is that with its sound effects it's just so incredibly fun to use.
    - the Bone Staff: Have you ever wanted to make your own platform in a Metroidvania? Cathedral's Bone Staff allows you to create your own platform, which both allows you to get a little bit of extra vertical height to reach higher places but also starts moving forward when you step on it to give you lots of horizontal distance. I also think Cathedral's charm system is very unique (not to be confused with Hollow Knight's charm system, Cathedral's is completely different) due to how it creates puzzles for players to solve in the mid-game, but that's a whole upgrade system rather than a single ability, so it doesn't make sense in the long run
    - the up dash: dashes aren't unique in metroidvanias nowadays, but Environmental Station Alpha is unique in that it has a dash that moves upwards in addition to one that moves sideways. Most metroidvanias I've seen provide a combination of a double jump, a high jump, a wall jump, and/or a space jump as their sources of extra vertical momentum, but the up dash is very unique since it prevents you from doing a horizontal dash in the same jump.

    nice. actually playing Ori right now, definitely was thinking something from the games should be on this list.

  • @rileyneff1889
    @rileyneff1889 8 місяців тому +2

    It’s probably technically ineligible since it’s an ability you start the game with instead of an upgrade, but The Messenger’s Cloud Step deserves at least an honorable mention. It’s essentially a double jump, but you need to snack something with your sword before you can access it, and you can do it infinitely as long as you can keep finding things to smack your sword against. It’s essentially Ori’s Bash, but it sacrifices the ability to redirect enemies and projectiles in exchange for being a flying blade-tornado.
    The snapshot ability from the new Prince of Persia also seems like it’s going to be super revolutionary, but it has nothing to do with movement, and may also be a starting ability. At the very least, it made me stop and say, “Holy shit that’s brilliant,” the first time I heard about it.

    • @MetroidvaniaGuru
      @MetroidvaniaGuru  8 місяців тому

      I was really close to putting Cloud Step in, but I had the same logic as you and thought it was similar to Bash.

      @@MetroidvaniaGuruThis has gotten me thinking about another potential top 10 video for you: The best non-MV abilities that would be great upgrades in an MV. Most MV upgrades started out in traditional platformers-double jump, grapple hook, wall jump-and Ikaruga’s polarity worked great in Deedlit, so why not keep digging?
      It would probably be more difficult to create than most lists, seeing as you’d have to put your list together and then also make sure they haven’t already been used in an MV. The only sure-fire winner I can think of is the cape from Super Mario World, and even that one could potentially be dismissed as essentially Metroid’s Space Jump but with the Shinespark’s limitation.
      Other maybes I’ve been able to brainstorm are Cyber Shadow’s interpretation of Parry, Psychonaut’s Levitation, and Booster V2.0 from Cave Story since itsnotametroidvaniakthxbyeeee

  • @HardcoreCasualGW2
    @HardcoreCasualGW2 8 місяців тому +1

    100% agree on Ori's bash move. It's extremely versatile. Not just a mobility skill, but a means of reflecting enemy attacks. However, its most clever use is where puzzles require you to redirect projectiles to then use them as a platform to bash off of where none exists! If I had any criticism of the skill it's that it's a little TOO good, such that it was overutilized in the first game. Fortunately, they added some skills that serve a similar function but with their own unique feel in the second game to mix it up a bit and the combination of acrobatic skills in Ori's repertoire feels absolutely fantastic!

    • @Mizufluffy
      @Mizufluffy 8 місяців тому +1

      Bash was so satisfying in the Blind Forest! It's definitely my favorite one of Ori's abilities. Also, the way how you first get used to it in the Ginso Tree before having a smell test of skill (opening the corruption on left and right sides) thinking that "yeah, I think I got how this works now" only to have an amazing escape section immediately afterwards to get out of the tree, the entire teaching process of learning how to use bash is just perfection.
      Something I really like about bash is how versatile it is, and as it was pointed in the video that you can use it not only for mobility but also enemies and their projectiles. An ability that works as an attack, as defense and as movement, and can also be cleverly used for solving simple puzzles, it's overall an amazing ability and one of the reasons why I enjoyed Ori so much.
      Just thinking about the bash kind of makes me want to quickly run through the first Ori again. (if only I didn't have a huge backlog of games to play)

      @HardcoreCasualGW2 8 місяців тому

      @@Mizufluffy Yeah, I was enjoying myself in Blind Forest but the Ginso Tree was where I really fell in love with the game. People often criticize Blind Forest for its lack of combat, but I'll take escape sequences like that over most boss fights any day.

      "If I had any criticism of the skill it's that it's a little TOO good"
      This is the problem, and this is the reason why I dropped Ori.
      Bash is very fun as a traversal ability, but the fact is that it also removed combat from the game.

    Metroidvania guru, I've just discovered the best MV ability - the ability to choose between open exploration or guided (objective markers on the map pointing out where to go). Been watching a play through of the new Prince of Persia game (it's amazing!) and it does that. More games should do this. How cool would it have been if games like Metroid Dread had proper open exploration and for those who don't like getting lost, just turn on guided mode. It seems like such a simple solution now but hopefully this can be a thing going forward.

    Morph ball is a classic and super metroid deserves that spot 100% although i found haiku using it the best way. Such a good game it is, like a better version of HK
    Cool to include islets' cloud arrow, it's super inventive and level design uses it well. Islets has overal super solid level design!
    Also expected axiom verge on here but with the glitch hack gun. To me that one is truly iconic but the drone is more fun to use
    And yeah bash is indeed the best thing ever in gaming, i LOVE it!

    I like your top picks. Particularly Bash and Crystal Arrow. But I think that Speed Booster + Shinespark is the single greatest movement ability in _any_ game, let alone a metroidvania. The way it re-contextualizes how you can traverse the world feels great. It's easy to learn but very hard to master. But when you master it, it feels _amazing._ And it opens up a whole new genre of platforming challenges: shinespark puzzles.

    I never found Bash easy to use. Maybe it's easier on M&KB? idk, but I always had trouble, especially when it came to aiming challenges where you had to direct an enemy back the other way, sometimes repeatedly. I also honestly don't enjoy it. Is that sacreligious? Maybe, but I genuinely dislike it and was glad when its use was minimized in Ori 2.
