    The Volvo PCV system is one of the most neglected maintenance items on the I5 cars. Failing to maintain this system can cause major oil leaks. I blew one of my cam seals one evening and lost 2-1/2 quarts of oil in just 2 miles. If you do not know when it was serviced last, replace the system today.

    glove inflated during system test, replaced pcv system and cleaned intake manifold/throttle body, replaced vacuum lines, now the glove has negative pressure. So grateful that there's people like you Robert that offer their expertise without ever expecting anything in return. Thank you!

    I'm trying to get around to doing a PCV video. One of the first things in doing my video would be to recommend a compression test prior to doing the job. It cost $150 for the parts and takes most people 4+ hours to do their first time. A compression test on an old car is in order before putting a lot of time and money into them. I do one every 50,000 miles.

  • @RobertDIY
    @RobertDIY  11 років тому +1

    I will check that out.
    As for the PCV system, the box is the strongest link in the system. The only reason I pull them is because I need to make sure I clean behind the box, make sure the ports are clear. The main problem with the system is that the lines are clogged, damaged, leaking, etc., stopping the system from venting properly and creating the vacuum it is suppose to.

    Hey Robert you're the best thank you for the information. I replaced my flame trap and nipple after which my 1995 850 passed the rubber glove test! Man I'm so happy about this I'm gonna order me some leather seat covers ;) This car is in great shape at 168,000 miles and I plan on keeping it, great city car, fits in parking spaces no one else but an electric car can. Some months back I followed your instructions and did the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and the pulleys, also did the drivers side seat belt, couldn't have done it without you man thanks again the videos are invaluable!!!

    I had a 2003 S60 that had a real bad PCV problem. When it gets bad, you'll even hear a whistling sound and throw a CEL. It took me 4 hours to replace the stupid oil trap since I had to take the manifold out and it was a bitch to get it out of the car because the metal fuel line goes in through the openings of the manifold. I was amazed at how much nasty goo was in there. Word of advice for you folks with Volvos is to always use synthetic instead if you're using conventional and to change your oil often.

    Thanks a million for posting this. I had no reason to suspect a problem, but I thought I'd check on the PCV system in my wife's V70, as it's getting close to needing a timing belt again. I bought the car 3 years ago. At the time, one of the selling points is that the PCV system had been professionally serviced sometime before purchase.
    Anyhow, I was able to confirm that the PCV system is indeed healthy. One follow-up question - what's the typical service/replacement interval on these parts?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  10 років тому +4

      I'm not sure. There is a chance that you are experiencing piston blow by. You can do a compression test to find out.
      How to do a compression test on a car motor. Volvo 850, S70, V70 through 1998 - Auto Repair Series
      Please let me know the results. That way I'll know for future people. So, my thoughts right now is that your PCV system is in good health, but you may have a worn motor or piston. If your car is a turbo, the numbers should be between 156 - 186 psi. If your car is NA then numbers should be between 185 - 215.

Now there is no smoke coming out of it, unless i rev the engine, when i rev it, some smoke comes out of it, is it normal? Robert I just completed the PCV system replacement on my 95 960 236000 miles. There aren't any instructions anywhere! The 6 Cyl is different than all others. I've found that while doing this job you need the entire kit from FCP. You also need extra vacuum hoses, clamps, injector seals. Most say to you don't need to pull the intake completely off to get to the pcv box, not the case for the 6 Cyl you need to pull all of it off and clean the entire intake system and since your down there clean the egr valve maybe replace the starter too. Not for the faint of heart as you also need a good set of tools as well. Thanks for the background info. This will be my last Volvo since China bought them the quality of these vehicles has diminished immensely!

I stopped working on my vehicles a while ago due to spinal issues but since the quality of mechanics has dwindled and the cost has skyrocketed, I started DIY, watching your videos has taught me a lot about Volvos. To that I thank you, my next project is seat replacement, carpet renewal and timing belt replacement.

    Well, I really don't remember saying that the system could be "CLEANED". Chances are that you have broken tubes while in there trying to clean it. The system simply needs to be replaced. So, place an order for the parts or go by the stealer and pick up the parts to replace it. Cleaning it out... many have tried, few success stories.

    Very good video. I have not purchased my first Volvo just yet, however, in the coming month I hope to. Your videos are educating me to a level to keep an watchful eye on people trying to offload cars with several hidden problems. Also, knowing what to look for may help to reduce the selling price. Kelly blue book is typically utilized for pricing and rarely questions these issues. Many of us DIY mechanics can perform these checks without taking the vehicle to a garage. Even if you had to bring the vehicle to a garage, it is very helpful to have an idea of symptoms so you are not taken advantage of by a garage telling you that you need a brake job when in fact your PCV system needs to be serviced. I recall meeting a lady once, who owned a Ford Escort, it was making a low pitch rumble noise from the rear of the car, the car had 40,000 miles on it. Margaret took the car to a garage, the mechanic told her the wheel bearings needed to be changed. Margaret phoned me, told me about the garage findings. I drove the hour up to Albany, pulled off the drivers side wheel and showed her the hub. No issues, none, it turned out the noise was a muffler heat shield vibrating against the frame. I repositioned it, noise gone. I have watched more than 5 of your videos thus far. Becoming better armed and educated of what to look for when I finally get that chance to go an look at Volvo’s. Thank you..

    Valuable, valuable information!! I just looked at a 2004 XC90 last week. 2.5T engine. I pulled off the oil filler cap and saw some white smoke coming out of the oil filler neck. Not a lot of white smoke, but there was some and it flowing out steadily while the engine was running. The car drove fine, but the white smoke was enough to make me pass on vehicle. This video sheds some light on what may have been going on with that vehicle and some issues to look out for before purchasing a vehicle. Thanks!

    It could be blow by. You can do a compression test to test compression. Did you replace all of the vacuum lines when you changed the PCV valve? Any cracked or broken line can cause blow by. Also, when the system is replaced on the Volvo's it usually takes 500 to 1,000 miles for the smoke/vapor to clear up.

    Hi Dovydas, for some reason, I could NOT replay to your message. Likely a setting in your account. At any rate, as the video explains, I do NOT use NOR like the smoking dipstick test. The oil system gets hot and will smoke. Smoke is NORMAL, that is why the system is designed to trap and recycle the fumes. So, it sounds to me like things with your SERVICED system is working very good. Move on to another issue, we all know there is one. ;)

      Thanks for a quick reply, and I got one more problem. When the engine is idling, I can feel some vibration while sitting in the car, the rpm needle is jumping up and down a little, what could be the cause of that? If I disconnect the maf sensor, rpm jumps to 1000 and it seems that the vibration is gone. I cleaned the maf sensor and even put another one from other volvo 850, it didn't help, I think it's not the cause. Maybe I should change the spark plugs?

    Yes, your car may also have a part installed in the intake called VVIS which is a valve in the intake manifold that closes 1/2 of it off sometimes. You should take the entire intake manifold off, not just push it to the side. The EGR valve is bolted to the bottom of the manifold, and you should take it off, scrape off any carbon buildup, then install a new paper gasket. This will also require you to pull the throttle body off so you should get a new gasket for that as well.

    Hi Robert, I just came across your Site & Vids... what a great resource. I am an Aussie, I have a 97 Volvo 850 wagon, with 380+ K Km on the clock, and serviced by a (ex-) Volvo mechanic every 10k with a 5k oil change. It has never let me down, but is starting to use some oil. No signs of anything wrong, no smoke, and my mechanic says to just keep it topped up. It runs like a dream, and I will have the ABS module fixed in a couple of weeks by an auto electrician. The Fault light comes on too soon, maybe an O2 sensor. Those are my only 2 issues, but got them sorted, I hope. My niece has a 2006 V50, goes great, but the ignition key get stuck occasionally - a real pain. Anyway this is just to say keep up the good work - I have subscribed, and will enjoy looking at your Vids. Cheers

    I think it's the best home test. If you are still inflating the glove, you may have internal engine wear causing blow by (head pressure). Do a compression test. You can go to my channel and hit the search glass and type in "Compression Test". If compression is good you should re-visit the PCV job.

    96 850 R , I finished the pcv job, and everything went well but still have the mystery part. I got the car a couple weeks ago, so not sure if it's something that was just hanging around from another job. looks like it's had a new radiator and starter. part doesn't seem like it's part of the manifold or pcv. it's basically a 1"x1" cylinder ( like a donut) with a metal body, copper wires inside that go to to leads on the end, and a plastic sheath that looks like if you insert it in a hole it will keep it in... I can send a pic, . anyway I finished the pcv job at 1am and had to drive it home and everything seems to work fine. hopefully the pcv job slows down the rear main seal leak or I'm going to be asking a lot more questions... timing belt is next...thanks for all the great videos!

    Robert, I replaced everything on the PCV system, and I'm still having positive pressure in my motor and I don't like it lol Made sure all the ports were cleaned out from the block and everything. Even took a tube and stuck it inside the lower drain port and blew air into it to see if the square port was clogged inside the pan ( I came across this method somewhere online). It seemed fine when I did it, i could blow air onto the pan, so I thought that is not my problem. If that is not my problem, then I understand it could be either worn piston rings or head gasket failing. My plan it to do compression check and see where I'm at there, and if that looks good then drop the oil pan and check that drain port. I have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT and it has been very well taken care of. I bought it 2 years ago from a guy and he had all the service records.

    Thanks for the reply. I did a thorough clean, found very little residue. The old PCV was in bad condition so it needed to be done. It has reduced the smoke but there is still a smell of fumes when the car is warmed up & only then. I'm not burning or losing any fluids, none. The plugs are new & clean. I will compression test & clean the PTC valve. I did not check or clean this when I replaced the PCV piping.
    If you have any other suggestions, it will be appreciated.

  • @RobertDIY
    @RobertDIY  11 років тому

    I would do a compression test. Maybe you have a bad head gasket or a worn piston. These cars actually run with bad head gaskets for a long time. My daughter drove with one for over a year. Keep the coolant topped up and it'll keep going.
    Did you remember to clean out the ports in the motor?

  • @johnferguson7235
    @johnferguson7235 8 років тому

    The problem with the oil box plugging is almost eliminated by using synthetic oil like Mobil 1. I cleaned the throttle body and the oil box at 100,000 miles and the box didn't have much in it. We cleaned it out using hot water to make a strong solution with dish washing liquid. I let it soak for about an hour and then sprayed Simple Green inside. Rinsed well and the box was very clean. Cleaned the throttle body and put in a new set of Volvo plugs. My XC 70 runs like new.

      Robert DIY 116k and it still runs like a top. The one piece of advise I can give is to change the fluid in the Haldex unit (XC 70). Volvo says that it last forever, but that's bull. The fluid was loaded with clutch material when we opened up the case. Changed the filter and the four wheel drive worked beautifully again. The ABS is showing a strange intermittent failure and throwing a ABS check light. Do you have any suggestions? I saw a You Tube video and it seems that the plastic case warps with age and some pins inside start to lose contact. Ever seen that? Thanks, love the channel.

    I had to delete last message due to the specifics.
    I just Bought a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo 190k+ miles for $1300.00
    It has a small, and when I say "small" I mean super small oil leak.
    Details:
    So it's not leaking in massive amounts of oil. It's not even leaving a puddle unless it has been driven extensively through the highway.
    It's leaking where the oil pan is located. The bottom of it is soaked in oil, I reached down under it after it was degreased and my hand was soaked in it.
    I am thinking personally that it is just a worn out rear main seal. However the experience of a car enthusiast such as yourself could tell me where my next step should be taken.
    Thank you sir

      +Adam Sandifer Is the PCV system serviceable? You'll need to locate the leak.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 років тому +1

      +Adam Sandifer The PCV looks good. I recently learned that the PCV test should be done when the engine is warm or hot. Also, you will need to find where the oil leak is coming from. Is there oil at the bottom of the distributor cap?

    Yes, a compression test. This is not a fact but just an example. Lets say that a motor in good condition will blow 20 units of air per minute. Lets also assume that the PCV system is designed to handle 25 units of air per minute. Well, a motor with worn pistons may produce 35 units of air per minute, which exceeds the system design, likely on purpose to let you know that something is going wrong with the motor before it leaves you stranded in the wilderness somewhere. Do a compression test.
