Is this where we write our review for the video? Well I give this one a 10/10. Why does it require me to click on a Visa logo, though?
I absolutely adore the juxtaposition of Coney approaching the anti-feminist criticism of GTA with a lot of nuance, exploring places like “Okay sure, but maybe that was the point?” “Well for a game of its era maybe it was still a valid criticism.” etc. and having healthy discussion with chat,
Then you have Angry British Gamer who immediately goes “THE REVIEWER SLORPED THE FEMINIST FREQUENCY JUICE”
British guy is speaking for the gamers alright

Yeah I love when Coney actually just discusses and just talks about his opinion seriously
It’s awesome
Him being british made it so much better
Can you name a more iconic duo than British gamers and being way too angry about anything related to gender issues in games?
Battle for Bikini Bottom getting a 2 score, holy. That reviewer HATED the game.
Exaggerated swagger of a black teen was very cringe, but damn was there some heat with the responses that came from it.
is he wrong tho like i love the game and have been playing it since i was a child on the GameCube and even I think its just average as a platformer now if you get someone who knows nothing about spongebob I can see why they would call it bad

I actually appreciate the way Coney discusses his opinions. Even if I disagree, he'll always have a reasonable justification as to why he feels a certain way, he's good at articulating his perspective which I value. He'll also engage with chatters, and he never seems too dug in to shift his opinion if presented with a better argument.

All games are art. Just gotta stop thinking of "art" as "high art" bro
real
What’s the distinction though? What even is high art and why should that matter in regards to how we evaluate video games? Why does Coney’s hair look like a dead rodent?
And stop thinking something being art means it has to be seen as good.
Honestly I don't understand the opinion that something being directed at a more casual audience makes it immune to criticism of how it portrays minority groups. Honestly "non-political" media is some of the most interesting to analyze from a critical perspective because it lays bare the biases of the creators
That and Game Design as a methodology is art. Super Mario is legit a masterpiece because of how foundational and simple it’s design principles are.
I still don't think the DKCTF reviewer played the game. That review was impressively bad
Donkey Kong capture the flag???!!!?!!?!?!??
Donkey Kong’s Correctional Testicle Facility is a great time as long as you’re a gamer
I can't get over Coney referring to Arkham combat as "BamHam" just due to a fucking shitpost edit that makes him laugh. That's Coney classic.
Also I genuinely do not trust anyone who goes to bat for Days Gone. No, buddy. Not the one.
I exclusively call Arkham like games bamhams after the first time I heard Coney explain it
Can someone explain what Days Gone is criticised for? I really feel like I'm missing something. I know it had a lot of glitches on premiere, but is there something else that couldn't be fixed?
@@PrivateDaisy I hate to link you to three hours of content to answer your question but I mean, if you need to know Days Gone's issues, there's no better source than multiple different people who all played it (and I believe most of them beat it), and it's been years since I listened to this so I couldn't tell you exact things.

@@PrivateDaisy Thinking the game is good, not a problem. Defending it's honor in the way this guy is? Makes me hesitant.
That is one of the most conspicuous things you could do. Firing someone over a low rating. That's probably worse for the games rep then just leaving the review up.
But then we got giant bomb which was a gift (I know it's still around but it's not the same)
Kids today not understanding the want to be a game reviewer is crazy to me. At the time, that was the only way to play games for a living and we all wanted that
The thing that gets me about the exaggerated swagger of a black teen ad is that HES RIGHT miles' animations are over the top and dope as hell. And as someone who was once a black teen i felt similarly
I know what you mean by “as someone who was once a black teen” but it’s so funny to imagine that you just stopped being black
@@Cosplaybuddygiraffes Bro respec'd
like yeah he’s correct but also for god’s sake word that differently
I think it’s the milk toast delivery of the Gamespot reviewer that threw me off when I heard it. That line by itself sums Miles Morales pretty well in game and lore overall, but hearing the guy(and the context behind it all) makes it all the more comical.
I was NOT prepared for Bam ham
Even if a game is fun to traverse in, having a fast travel feature is nice. I love driving pirate ships in black flag, but when I’ve got a mission across the entire map I like that I have the option to just go right to it. Driving in GTA is fun, and they’ve even got planes, but I still like that I have the option to take a taxi when I want. Even in Spider-Man there’s moments where the subway is helpful. I don’t see how having fast travel can be a negative for a game, just don’t use it
Gotta love going into the video thinking this was gonna be just some fun dunking on bad game reviews, and getting sucker punched by a feminism rant in the middle.
the england-type gamervoice shouldve warned u
Game criticism is such a volatile tightrope. Once many gamers decide their own personal rating of a game and go to a review of it, their preconceived expectations are premeditated resentments. If the review differs any from how they rated the game or the game is critiqued in a way, the review is automatically terrible.
There is of course some nuance. Sometimes criticism just aren't valid (Battle for Bikini Bottom getting a 2 is crazy) or if a reviewer isn't a fan of a series, some callbacks don't register to them, but sometimes it genuinely is the gamers. Like saying no one wants to think about the morality of their actions in a zombie game is kind of stupid in a story heavy game.

I think the gta problem is fact the gta is a game where basically everyone is a shit person, but the women are only shit people in the most stereotypical ways possible. The probably mostly comes from the fact that there really aren't too many actually important female characters in it in the first place, which can be seen as a problem itself.
I think this criticism only makes sense if you don't actually pay attention to the characters. Amanda, for instance, is certainly not a stereotype. Boiling her down to a "disgruntled wife" is either ignorance or dishonesty. It requires ignoring basically all actual interactions she has in the game.
@@XetXetableeven in games, gamer are nigh incapable of interacting with women, so honestly it tracks
Exactly. It's not as simple as "good or bad"
Also since when is being a prostitute a bad thing? That was never meant to be a discrediting of the women, it was discrediting the narrow view of womanhood the devs have
I can’t remember her name, but the girl Franklin gets with is a fairly important, but I think not remembering her name is proof she wasn’t nearly as important as other people. She was also a good person, as far as gta characters go
@@ToiletWolf12 honestly, in a game that's supposed to be as extreme as gta, being a relatively normal person is kinda like not being a character at all. GTA is all about everyone being shitty, but the best characters are likable despite that.
If you want games to be considered an art form, then you have to be willing to accept criticism of that art
I think people's problem with the way women are presented isn't that they're all bad, it's that they're all bad in woman-specific ways. A woman that acts like Trevor would break away from traditional roles, and could be fun and refreshing
no joke, to me Coney is someone who I think is truly talented at expressing his thoughts and opinions. I almost wish he would do reviews Dunkview style
Personally, I think that the "exaggerated swagger" line is actually just straight good, but not when you say it out loud, especially if the person saying it is white
Shoutouts to the chatter at 15:15 with the 'my name is skyler white yo' bit
Fantastic joke
Gamers have real issues with reviews. They see them as publicity instead of a guys opinion. Very telling that the reviewers are never seen as a person, they're anonymous blobs like websites.
I agree with this, but I think the issue is that they are representing the company itself for the review, which is where the issue comes in.
That's why CONEY said he appreciates where he is now, that he can give his own critique and reviews as one person and not as an entire entity.
Bro is onto nothing tbh. Saying no one wants to think about the morality of their actions in a zombie game is like saying Starship Troopers is about how cool war is. Like sure, there's room for mindless zombie killing in Left 4 Dead and the like but questions like 'who are the real monsters, the zombies or us' are the core of the genre to an almost cliched extent. And at the end of it all dude is caping for mfing Days Gone, so he clearly has zero investment in the games themselves and is just out here looking for fights to pick.
you say this as if the british guy doesn't *definitely* regard starship troopers that exact way lol
I literally remember being a kid, playing Sponge Bob and having that issue with the pressure plate 1 time and thinking "oh lemme just stand further back" and I was 4...
Coney has the exaggerated swagger of a middle aged stream. But on a serious note, I feel like the line was just one that might have needed another draft (and also maybe someone who's actually black talking about it). If the writer wanted to voice how he felt about Miles representation in the game, I would want him to but it's in the same vein as "too much water" being a fair critique that didn't have the right words to back it up.
As a rule I see some capital G Gamer getting mouth-frothingly mad about games journalism as a red flag. That has been a cover for the most unhinged bigoted takes for, not joking, 10 years by now.
Yeah, absolutely.
I love watching Coney's reactions. His reactions are always so full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen :3
how come they label a 7/10 good? if the score is from 1 to 10 wouldn't the middle be good and sequentially 1 be awful and 10 a masterpiece?
that would be far too logical
Middle is just…okay.
...how is 7/10 middling? 6-4 is average. 7 is good. This isn't high school lol
Yeah, if reviews made any sense 1 would be terrible, 2-4 would be bad, 5-6 would be average, 7-9 would be good, and 10 would be a masterpiece. But most people in the west for some reason view 1-5 as trash-decent, 6-7 as average, 9 as ok-good and 10 as great-masterpiece. It's ridiculous.
@chiangkai-shrek1575 7/10 is average because everyone uses 7/10 as average/decent even though 5/10 is literally dead even.

Loving the Shaggy fit my guy
My brain can't stop seeing Coney as Shaggy this whole video
The gta criticism is completely valid because the game often serves as a power trip/power fantasy for the player, but the whole story is seen through the eyes of a male and that power fantasy is very male driven. It’s not a women’s power fantasy, if that makes sense.
I know you touched more upon that in the stream tho
This exactly.
This guy is definitely the kind of guy who complains about politics when there’s a gay character in a game. Anyone who shoots for Days Gone isn’t normal.
all game reviews are CRINGE and FAKE except for OnlyOneHere
I’m gonna like this video with the exaggerated swagger of a Coney Sub 🗣️💯🔥
Imagining coney's takes coming from an industry game review site is crazy.
People would fucking riot.
Hilariously enough, Deacon in Days Gone does take his hat off.... To put a different hat on for like 1/3rd of the game.
Reviews are great but scores are cringe. Gamers consistently showcase how unable they are at accurately interpreting a basic numeric scale even when the reviewers explain the scale in plain english.
Its a useless metric for the most part and suffocates so much discussion around the review itself.
Ultimately the problem with videos like this and the dislikes in general is that people will just be angry that the reviewer didn't agree with the established opinion of the game. When the games aren't even out yet, it makes a deluge of negative reactions to a review all the more pathetic.
People don't want reviewers, they want someone to affirm their bias and tell them "you're OBJECTIVELY correct don't worry sweetie opinions dont exist."
Reminds me of how Arlo has a system of rating games from 1-7 (4 being the center, leaving 1-3 as below average and 5-7 as above average) and there was one person who thought it so incomprehensible that they called it chicken scratch.
@@SomniaCE sounds like reddit in a nut shell.

Exaggerated swagger of a black teen is one of my favorite game review moments ever
It’s insane and racist yeah, but got its spawned so many funny memes
How is saying that black people have swag racist?
yeah no not really, it's honestly just accurate, black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc).
losing or reducing your exaggerated mannerisms is a key indicator of maturation in all of humanity as far as I'm aware.
it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
I genuinely don't understand why a black dude seeing the eccentricities of his own culture (and talking about them positively) is racist
I think people are just defining racism as "anything that suggests black people and white people act different" which... isn't really how it works. Like yeah biologically we're all the same but we have different cultures and he was happy to see one he resonated with
@@ellie8272 Because it forgets the fact that people are individuals and that not everyone (or even a majority) acts in such a Hollywood-esque stereotypical manner. You also can’t just paint everyone with the same ancestral roots with one brush, because depending on their environment, where and how they are raised, etc. people in the same ethnic group are going to differ.
@@JH-no8sy Yes, I'm well aware races are not monoliths, we're talking about culture here
I feel like the exaggerated swagger line is still terrible, but knowing that it was a line written by a black reviewer does affect my perception of it.
Same. They really should not have had that guy deliver that line.
Why even bother asking if the GTA thing was a fair criticism or not? It doesn't matter. If there's one thing that Gamers™ despise more than anything in the world, it's feminism. If any reviewer ever suggests that they might agree with some feminists about anything ever, their review will 100% be bombarded with dislikes.
Ghost of Tsushima is definitely not a 7/10
6:45
There have been a small handful of games with fast travel that I've never used. Spider man is the obvious one but Sunset Overdrive is even better IMO because its more dynamic and interactive. Prototype was another one because the movement is so smooth in thise games and the fact that both games specifically have challenges geared toward movement says a lot imo
As a person who was once a black teen with exaggerated swagger, the writer could have put it better. I get what he meant though. I assume he was trying to explain the playfulness of Miles' Spiderman compared to Peter's Spiderman which is more mature and experienced, that would be my guess. The line was cringy but I can't lie the meme's were classic.
This video has the exaggerated swagger of a Coney teen
Coney thinking Alien Isolation is bad might be the shittiest take hes ever given over a video game
I like gamespot, they have some good stuff, but also a lot of bad stuff i hear
Really rocking the hair Coney glad you didn't take the comments to heart
I mean Siren is about 20 hours to beat, and it's still at least in my top 3 of favorite horror games of all time.
Hold on, maybe we should've let gamestop cook for some of these
Im still kinda mad that Fromsoft created the best "combat engine" or whatever you wanna call and not doing anything with it after Sekiro
Im a huge Dark Souls fan but Sekiro is the best game they ever created
Dude days gone got shafted so hard. I finally played it last year and I still think about that game all the time. I wrote it off because of what people were saying about it but it turned out no one actually played the game I guess.
Also I said it once before so I’ll say it again Alien Isolation is not trying to be a badass shooter. It’s trying to be a “HORROR” game and the best horror games have slow build ups that proceed to reach climax. The game isn’t bad just because you don’t like it’s gameplay philosophy. It’s the same with turn based combat if you don’t like it then don’t play it. I really like the phrase “there’s no such thing as a game for everyone and that’s a good thing”. Sorry man but gamers want products that challenge their patience and intelligence. And thankfully Indie and double A games do that, were as the Triple A industry produces the same tired formulas over and over again. And it’s sad that the Triple A industry, and TikTok for that matter has ruined people’s attention spans to the point where any games that don’t tug the player along with a string or lack any trust that they can figure things out for themselves (yellow paint I’m looking at you) is considered inherently outdated or can no longer be praised.
Maybe the GAMERS are cringe. You ever think of that!
That Days Gone argument for out of context wedding scene is some BS. With the context it is still just as bad. FF10 laughing scene is just as strange with or without the context.
On the cyberpunk review he makes an overly charitable interpretation based on not having all the information. While yes, its fine to review a game while not engaging with some parts of it. It comes with caveats like informing the consumer of the fact. And if youre actively not engaging in mechanics then you cant review those mechanics. A review of "the games good but i dont care about crafting so i didnt touch it" is fine. But a review of "the games good but the crafting is bad tho how would i know since i didnt touch it." Is not fine.
Also the whole police thing wasnt cause its an unimportant emergent side quest, but because it was 2020 so ACAB was a big thing so she thought shed get brownie points by advertising having actively avoided engaging with any content where you would help police
One must imagine spongebob happy
Wow this guy was already coming off pretty stupid but that last one just proves how this guy is rotten at the core. Thank you Coney for not taking that stance.
There is 1000% something to be said about the construction of gender in GTA V. You can play it off as parody, sure, but the fact of the matter is that the game constructs genders according to the status quo when you can parody gender roles without contributing to harmful stereotypes.

Arkham looks insanely fun
“Blinded by nostalgia” doesn’t work because as a member of generation Z, I played SpongeBob SquarePants The battle of Bikini Bottom for the first time on the same year the remastered released and enjoyed it flaws and all. Same with Quake 1 and 2 remastered, prior to them I was getting into the indie market and discovering what Boomer Shooters were. Dusk and Prodeus were the main indie games in this genre I played, then a few years later I bought Quake 1 and 2 remastered and proceeded to play them for the first time. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it when they were never apart of my childhood, in fact I’m far more critical of my childhood games like Skyrim for example. Again I’m a Zoomer so the Boomer card isn’t going to work with me.
Top ten most hated Gamespot reviews?
Yes.
Dude said GTA is the biggest video game franchise of all time? Bruh GTA is the hotdog stand outside Pokemon's Empire State Building.
Ghost of Tsushima is a 9/10 game in art, 8/10 in story and a 7/10 in core gameplay. I fucking love this gorgeous game about a samurai having to go against his sincerely believed teachings to save his island against an enemy that trampled all those who adhered to the old ways.....and then the gameplay is a lot of picking the fighting style that you're told to pick for an enemy type, you do a lot of clearing enemy camps with a combination of stealth and brute force and the general gameplay is somewhat mashy offence and parry almost everything with some moves you have to dodge. Truly a Sucker Punch production, it deserves a 7/10 and I hope to god they're working a sequel where the core gameplay is so much more.
wrote this in response to a comment saying the swagger line was racist, but I reckon it should be a primary comment as well:
yeah no not really, it's an accurate observation and a good example of cultural representation in gaming;
black american culture is very expressive and it's exaggerated amongst black youth because all teens exaggerate whatever behaviours they most strongly identify with (e.g. performative wealth for a rich kid, excess gloominess for an emo kid, voilence for an abused kid, etc).

it was only cringe because they made the awful decision to have a white guy read a script drawing on the author's personal experience as a black guy.
16:06 I think it IS art, but it's a social commentary. Everyone dislikes each kind of person in the game, because no matter how you feel, it's a gross misrepresentation. Except Franklin, love that guy
even though i love the alien franchise and isolation specifically, i agree that the game does overstay its welcome, and it doesnt help that most of the weaker parts of the game come in the last third or quarter of the runtime. id also say its pretty hard to give an accurate runtime for the game since a lot of it depends on number of deaths and reattempting sections to try and make to that next save point.
i also feel the difficulty is a large part of that, as my first play through i played on the second hardest difficulty, died over 100 times, and took over 20 hours (although i was new to horror games at the time). on replay on the same difficulty years later not remembering where to go and such, i think it was closer to 12-15. but the issue is i think the complex xenomorph ai in the higher difficulties is a huge part of what makes the game stand out and remain faithful to the franchise, but that of course makes the game more difficult and hence longer.
totally understand if its not your thing, but id recommend staying until you beat the hospital level mission 5 if you want to give what the full game has to offer a chance, since the opening hour is a slow burn easing you into the gameplay, story, and atmosphere. if youre warming up to it after mission 5, definitely continue until you get too bored or annoyed later, so then you can enjoy more of what is special and memorable about the game. personally i think you can still "like" a game even if you dont finish it, because of a noticeable drop in quality from gameplay/boredom/frustration or annoying/etc.
The cyberpunk gamespot lady was right though she was spitting
I dont think whether video games are art or not is entirely relevant to the discussion of themes and purpose behind a game
Video games will always have an influence on society and culture even if the discussion around that influence doesnt happen. Its important to still discuss and analyze it so we can understand the 'why' of the influence. Even if the games purpose is to "turn off your brain".

When people say that ghost of Tsushima is trying to be sekiro it doesn't make sense because ghost of Tsushima was in development before sekiro even started development its just that it came out after sekiro that the comparisons started. Furthermore ghost of Tsushima isnt trying to be sekiro its a completely different feeling game
Ghost of tsushima was just so fucking solid. 8/10 would be fair. My playstation is still full of screenshots from this game. Sekiro has better combat and enemy's yes. But got has a better stealth system with more options, good and flashy combat on top. The online mode was fun too.
Sometimes, yeah. I always prefer to make the decision for myself and don’t usually let reviews deter me from something that I want to try.
Ok but the exaggerated swagger of a black teen is both funny and true. That is what a black teen would do if they got to jump off a building to look cool.
I gotta agree with the Ghost/Sekiro comparison
I loved Ghost so much then I played Sekiro and Ghost felt stale in comparison. Still a good game w/ a good story, but still.

Idk my fav game of all time is super Mario galaxy and there’s 2 galaxy’s I hate.
Coney talking about The Last of Us's noise stuff is very funny.
GTAV is literally a commentary. It’s meant to be excessive in most characters to comment on how radical people begin to act when money and pleasure are the only drivers in your life. If u think GTA is sexist I believe you missed the entire point.
I want to say, Cyberpunk fu**king sucked at lunch, the game was unplayable garbage with a lot of bugs, unfun mechanics and a mess of a game structure. The game became only good after the 2.0 patch that reworked so many things that is basically a new game. Is the game perfect? HELL NO. The game is still filled brim with bugs (especially a very bad one that gives you permanent invincibility for the rest of the game, corrupting your file, needing you to use a exteenal software to fix it just because you used an ability), the story it's still very linear where decision that the player made doesn't effect the story at all, the driving sucks, ncp ai it's sometime even dumber than postal 4 AI, a secret ending is locked on a specific line of dialogue on a random mission. But even after all of this, I still find it a better game than fallout 4. The things that the game does right are really well made, the game really fulfill the power fantasy, the Melee combat is amazing, the writing is good and the game is filles with lovable characters you get attached to. I'm right now doing a second run of the game running a body build
As someone who got ridiculously lucky in that the only issues i had with (launch version) Cyberpunk on my ps5 was crashing, it was a genuinely great game if you were able to actually experience it, and i think that's the main reason why it even came back so strong. It was incredibly jarring to finish my playthrough and go online to see how everyone else felt about it.
