  • Short Tip Saturday #1: In this video I will show you the proper way to connect your batteries when installing a 24v or 36v trolling motor. I also explain the difference between series and parallel configurations and how using a parallel battery configuration can benefit 12v trolling motor users.
    This is the first video in my new weekly series I'm calling, "Short Tip Saturday." These videos will be around 5 minutes in length and will feature a short tip or trick that is fishing or boating related.

    Question, 24 volts set up, can you add the 3rd battery to get more capacity? Thanks just asking?

    • @TheWeekendAngler

      Can you? Yes. Should you? No.
      The load would be unbalanced and would place unnecessary strain on the single battery.

    WHICH BATTERY WOULD I CONNECT THE TROLLING MOTOR POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE WIRES TO FOR THE 36V CONFIG?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  2 роки тому

      When wired as shown in the video, you will have one battery with an unused positive terminal and one battery with an unused negative. These are the ones you'd connect your trolling motor to. These are the same terminals you see me connect the volt meter probes to in the video.

    Would you use a golf cart charger 36v to charge the 3 battery 36v setup or disconnect and charge 12v individually 🤔

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  Рік тому +1

      You can actually leave them connected while still charging them individually.
      I use a noco genius 3 bank charger to keep my 36v system charged. It has 3 separate 12v charging outputs.

    My boat is a 12 volt system right now and my outboard motor charges the battery can I toss in another 12 volt battery to make my system 24 volts for a bigger trolling motor without damaging anything? Or is it best just to get 2 new batteries to make a 24v system for it and keep the 12 volt for my boat

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  3 роки тому +1

      If you have the room to dedicate two batteries to your trolling motor, it would be better. If not, it is OK to add a second battery and use the starting battery to help make your 24v system.
      I have done both before depending on how much extra space I had in my boat. You'll definitely get the best results from separate trolling motor batteries. Not just in terms of performance, but trolling motors also generate electrical interfere which can affect the signal quality on your electronics such as fish finders.

    I was given an old trolling motor and I am wondering what type of battery to get for it. The motor is a Minn Kota 25 Watt 14 lb thrust three speed with reverse. I would like a battery that can be used all day. Can you help me? Also, seeing that it has been in my parents basement for about 25 years, is there anything I should service on it before I use it?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  Рік тому

      That is likely a 12v trolling motor. A group 24 battery would let you fish for days on it.
      I'd remove the prop and make sure there isn't any line wrapped around the shaft, and look at the shaft seal to make sure it isn't dry rotten, but aside from that you're probably good to go.
      Those older units were built like tanks.

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  2 роки тому +1

      You'll need a positive and negative cable to run from your battery bank to your load (trolling motor, inverter, etc) the positive and negative supply cables attach to the same unused posts where I connected the volt meter.
      On a 24v system you'll use 2 batteries and 1 connecting wire (the yellow wire in the video)
      On a 36v system you'll need 3 batteries and 2 connecting wires.

    I've got a 1998 Stratos bass boat and I've been told that I dont need a jumper because mine jumps at the receptacle on the front deck. My 75lb 24volt trolling motor isn't as strong as I think it should be. I currently don't have any jumper wires and my two batteries are just wired normal. Ive got 2 positive wires and two negative wires coming from the receptacle on the front. Any suggestions? I understand that if the receptacle is reading 24volts then in theory when i plug my trolling in i should wired up correctly?? Maybe... Awesome video! Thanks

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. Lots of information to cover here, so let me know if I miss anything.
      1st, my champion boat has the same receptacle. They do the job, but I don't use mine. The main reason is the factory uses the smallest wire they can get away with.
      You also have to remember that modern 24 volt trolling motors are putting out a lot more power than the ones produced years ago. Wire sizes that may have been adequate in the late 1980s are no longer adequate for today's equipment.
      If it were me, I would strongly consider running a new run of wire from the battery to the front deck and using a new trolling motor plug.
      If your boat is anything like mine, if you pull that panel on the front deck and look at the trolling motor wiring, I would be willing to bet it is somewhere around ten gauge. Depending on the length of the run, you should be using 6awg or 4awg.

    • @michaelchapman4261
      @michaelchapman4261 3 роки тому

      @@TheWeekendAngler You're absolutely correct. I have 10 gauge wires. So 4 or 6 gauge wire and 24volt plug. Then I can run straight to the battery without a series or parallel jump right?
      EDIT: Sorry I just checked and the wires say 06 GA

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  3 роки тому +1

      @@michaelchapman4261 right. If you're going to run new wire, go ahead and get the 4 Gage. The price difference will be negligible. You will make your jump back at the battery boxes so that your wires going to the front will be carrying 24 volt.
      You will want to install a circuit breaker within 12 inches of the battery. A 60 amp breaker would probably be correct for this application. Make sure you are using good quality crimped terminals and tinned wire. Standard copper automotive wire will corrode quickly in a marine environment.
      You can get everything I just mentioned for a good price from www.genuinedealz.com
      That's where I buy my wires and connectors. I am not affiliated with that company in any wait, I have just received excellent service from them and they sell quality products.
