The fact a dev took down the game right away to fix a game-breaking bug in a matter of minutes is something I have nothing but respect for. I wish the devs and this game all the best.
@@ThomasFlynnPresentations you know what, as a long time runsecape player, I'll try this game. This is the first game of this serie of video that I will try out.
Very interesting kickstarter, basically all they asked for was to pay 1-2 guy's rent for a year so they could focus on the game, and that's exactly what they did. Can't fault them for doing exactly what was promised, way better than most other kickstarters that ask for much more money and it all feels like it went to waste.
Holy shhh... I worked on this game for a year with the lead dev. We had so much fun. Thank you Josh, this is like God talking to me. I am not worthy. You are amazing, sir. In all seriousness, this was a passion project of love and we appreciate all the feedback and publicity. Anyone who has played it means the WORLD to us.
I probably wont be playing the game myself, but as a hobby game dev working on my own passion project thats kinda just "this thing I loved but more of it and made by me", I respect the hell out of you guys! Hope this game turns into the success it deserves to become!
I actually was a part of this team for about 6 months, they were a nice bunch. There was certainly a lot of chaos behind the scenes, but I know the lead had ideas he wanted to put down in physical form. I was even shocked that upon joining there wasn't an NDA or anything, we were allowed to share the goings on with friends and encouraged to tell people about it. It was a nice bit of work and experience learning with the environment team. I hope they are having fun with their projects!
@@LanArchy42 well, even though the team was nice there were many issues. We had to run all edits through the project lead before final submission because our map team lead left about a month or two after I joined, the editor for creating the maps was all done in a browser (for any that know the limitations of a browser you will know why having an environment editor in one makes this problematic), Only the project lead was working on the engine itself for bug fixes and adding features to the editor all other programmers were busy coding the game (to my knowledge). I believe the stress was getting to the boss as well since pretty much everything had to be approved through him, so sometimes there were strange changes he asked for. I'm wondering if the river that ran through my tile still looks as unnatural as I remember, because he said that the river changed width too much and needed to be a uniform width all the way through.. Considering mine was the only tile where he asked us to do this, mine looked REALLY out of place at the end when the tiles were stitched together. Don't know if they fixed it later or not.
I don't actually know the full answer to this. I just know the project lead paid us and that he told us they were receiving funding from donations from the community (patreon I think) Outside of that, as far as I knew he was paying out of pocket.
Hello and welcome to Genfanad. The community is excited to welcome any and all new players but we ask you to keep in mind that the game is very early in development. We look forward to seeing you all in game!
@@monkerulz I can't speak for the developers but as I currently understand it other things such as content and the steam client are taking priority. You can currently play on a mobile device but it is unsupported and difficult. My best experience has been on the Firefox mobile browser but if you try it in the tutorial the tutorial progress window will take up half your phone. Steam deck works great though.
@@monkerulz Mobile actually partially works. It's just not fully supported, and the interfaces aren't tuned for mobile. There are a few players who have found work arounds to do some mobile playing.
I feel like more projects like this would be a lot healthier for the MMO landscape. Smaller games, that know what they want to be, and because of their tighter focus can have an increased sense of community. This probably isn't the MMO for me, but that's okay. It makes me hope we see more small MMOs like this, and that maybe one of these MMOs will be the one for me.
Honestly not just for the MMO landscape, just for videogames in general. These sorts of smaller, focused projects are where youll find most of both innovative new ideas and polished versions of existing ones. We need more games that are made because someone had a cool idea they wanted to make, rather than a checklist of features the market says are popular.
More games that are more blatant, 1-1 copies of 20 years old tech; evolving backwards? I'd appreciate this being a small game and personal hobby/indie project in general. But there's almost zero reason to play this whilst Runescape exists, they aren't even afraid to remind you it's a copy every 5 mins. Where's its own identity/creative aspects Other games get flamed for being copies whether self aware or not. Just because this looks "retro charming" doesn't mean it's great in comparison to all the other copies If it grew into it's own thing then fair. But every project whether a musican, game or movie tends to fall when they just copy their inspiration rather than make their own out of it. Hopefully they be creative, but visuals all the way down to foundations within mechanics and elements are just Runescape but 20 years ago
@@sultan788 yea... or you can go the disney route where everything new is live action self aware and racialy motivated. We are drowning in remakes by big companies who make original ideas shittier. I guess its evolving forward but in the process the body is all twisted
@@sultan788 Everything is copied. Nothing is original. Its impossible to name something that wasn't built on the foundation of other media in that genre. I know a reason why not to play Runescape, its toxic AF and owned by a corpo.
I'm sure we can push for a capitalism bad idea here, since they do need to get paid to keep living and smaller focused games don't exactly bring in a lot of money, but I'm sure everyone knows that by now. I'm super happy to see more projects like this coming around, it's super nice
Hey guys, sorry to say that as of April 30th 2024 Genfanad has shut down, mainly due to the lack of players and general income from patreon and kickstarter not breaking even. Sad news, but thought you guys would want to know!
@@Smilodon_ yeah I was interested initially but when seeing all their stuff on the discord was sharing memes about card games I didn't understand it and fell off. I wanted a true retro parody experience, not a deck battler.
4:30 "Now unlike [RuneScape Classic], your inventory can hold 30 items, not 28." Josh, I hate to break it to you, but the inventory in RuneScape Classic held 30 items. They changed it to 28 when they released RuneScape 2. In fact, the way you wear items is _also_ how you wore items in RuneScape Classic.
The no-eating-during-combat and no-bow-animation ranged was also a feature in IntelliQube. Ranged and Magic were actually only used to initiate combat rounds since you couldn't use them while stuck in combat, so melee was the most important style. You would retreat after 3 rounds, eat, hit them with a ranged attack, and then lock back into melee rounds.
@@PIVfirestarkproduconmagic you could use in combat on RSC. But not ranged. I remember lvl 32 claws of guthix mages pwning the shit out of me and i was 42 combat
Great video! One minor note -- Back in RS Classic, experience was actually gained per kill, not per damage roll. So Genfanad is actually like Ghost in the Shell in that regard. I remember getting griefed back in the day by higher levels sniping kills by doing majority damage.
youre a shining example of what a critic should be. honest, thoughtful, funny. integrity always intact. you love the genre you work for. you inspire me to be a better critic. great job josh. i have no notes for this one.
Fun fact: In the trailer for Genfanad (2:57 - 3:28), the narrator of the trailer is Mike Pollock, who’s well known for the role of Dr. Eggman from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise!
That feeling when Big Dave stops casting at the mines just to craft an HQ bronze sword for a guy who walked past him like 5 times. You know the community's good when that happens.
First day i played the game some guy not only gave me an amulet but also showed me where to farm and told me about the best farm spots for food. Loved every second of it.
Eve Online is bizarrely a lot like that too, particularly when it comes to newbies. We know that new players are required for our game to survive, so we give them a helping hand when we can.
I used to play OSRS back in the day and did a lot of smithing. In the early days I would often give iron weapons to the new starters at the Goblin House.
@@aFoolsMartyrI recently wanted to get back into wow, so I got dragonflight. Wanted to start fresh within 30 minutes I was told I deserve to be r worded and kicked from a leveling dg. Uninstalled, cancelled sub. I'm almost 30, too old to put up with edgy, emotionally stunted neckbeards.
All things considered, this is really impressive. Sure, its basically what the Gower brothers did over 20 years ago, but they actually managed to make a functioning netcode with a shoestring budget. They can really be proud of themselves. And its fine to invite comparisons to accomplished games. But don't frame it in a way that constantly makes me think "Yea, why aren't I playing RS instead?" This is a charming game. I hope it does well. All the best to the devs!
@@HeavySpark I don't think I am with this comment. The game is free, they raised a budget of just under 20 000 Dollars, after asking for half of it, they set realistic expectations and goals for their project, and they achieve them. They make incremental, steady progress, as outlined in the video and this isn't a braindead asset flip, like all of the NFT-MMOs, that began "development" in the last two years. They've set a goal, they achieved it. And it's not like complimenting a five year old child on taking 10 steps. Setting up MMO infrastructure and very clearly making everything in the code from scratch, even if the mechanics are lifted, is a lot of serious work.
@@phigu198 "isn't a brain dead asset flip" It's literally scuffed Runescape that looks like it's been made by teenagers learning to make their first game? Lol
I did a google search for this game to have a look. First thing I see is a thank you tweet to JSH for the video and a note that they hit 100 live players (i assume for the first time) today.
This game feels like a nature preserve. I want to play it but the fact that the game is designed and tailored around such a specific, small group of people makes me wish I could just stand back and observe it because my presence would damage its value. I miss games like this so much, it felt like in the old days of the internet you could find almost infinite amounts of little indie mmos with weird premises and inspirations.
I love that one quest interaction with the farmer and the claw amulet. That was a really funny joke to even here, self-aware while not breaking the immersion of the world.
What Josh doesn't know is that this entire project was just an elaborate bait to reel him in. We all know how strong of a pull RS has on his soul. So clone it (admirably) and now you have the most dapper commentator all up in your game forever.
30:22 I was gearing up for an intensely philosophical message on the importance of a fun gameplay loop above all else. And then after a short pause I was caught off guard by a "she said" joke. 10/10 Still never gets old.
Oh finally, I was watching some older videos for the second time (or third for some of them). As a game designer I really appreciate your videos as they help me a lot on my journey 😄 especially the MMOPINION ones!
Kingdom of Loathing is a case of the RIGHT way to do this, it was goofy, but has stakes even in the goofy trappings of it's goofy world. From the web browser game, to west of loathing and ESPECIALLY shadows over loathing. It's almost entirely a goofy experience but keeps some stakes or mystery that didn't disappear up it's own clown shoes.
+1 For mentioning KoL! I think it's partly because if you start digging into certain quests the goofy disappears completely and reminds you there are some pretty severe threats in the world. The whole Dad Seamonkee thing is probably the best example.
I was honestly a bit sad when Runescape moved to Client Only. The thing that always made the game special to me was how accessible it was. I could be anywhere, on any public computer no matter how cheap or bad, and still play as if I were at home. I hope if Genfanad sticks around it stays browser based if it can so people can have the same childhood memories grinding out ores in the school library like I did.
It's a weird time for those things since Flash and Java web applets used to make browser games are long dead and mostly buried, so games like RuneScape had to migrate to a client to keep functioning, but at the same time newer web standards were developed and widely accepted that allow for making even better games in the browser. Good luck trying to migrate a 22 year old game written in java to javascript, wasm and webGL though lol, the entire client part (and probably a part of the server) would have to be rewritten from scratch.
@@DeuxisWasTaken The Java to wasm part wouldn't be too hard, but still a lot of work. The server should be fine because you could just to a http api to socket middleman.
I looked into this game and it looks like they're completely redoing the combat into a TCG style system. I hope you take another look at this game once it opens up again!
Great one! I usually use this series to help me go to sleep, because I don’t particularly care for MMORPG‘s, but I really like your voice. That said, I really enjoyed this episode, and the evaluation of a smaller indie title, from metatextual perspective of its place in the genre as a whole.
I just wanna say - I'm glad you took time to yourself and slowed down on making these for a bit because everytime you make them it feels genuine and fun.
Yeah, having a community is part of what actually makes these things fun. Once people pass each other like they do in a high density urban environment, it's just another menial time sink.
This video got me interested in the game, so I went to go find it and found that they are actually transitioning the game into having TCG-style combat. I joined the Patreon and signed up for the beta, and it's like if Runescape and Slay the Spire had a baby. I'm very excited for the future of this game.
This game knows exactly what it is trying to be. Amazing what you can do when you don't set way too large of a scope. An MMORPG just existing and being playable at all is an achievement itself.
You nailed it when you said "an mmo is like a community." For those of us old enough to remember the heyday of most, it always felt more about the community. You had the whole of the server, and also sub community's with guilds and clans.
There's really only so much exploration you can do before you've seen it all in any given game. You can only be new for so long before you have to find something else that holds your attention about a game. It's not at all weird that the average WoW player, nearly 20 years later, is more focused on endgame progression than exploring. It's important to remember than up thru WotLK, the game was COSNTANTLY bringing in new players, so there were always new people learning the game and the world. When the new players stopped replacing those leaving out the back end, it's natural there'd be less of that mindset over time.@@unknowndev392
@@edattacks focus, instead of spreading themselves too thin, you can see the difference when games really focus piece by piece on limited yet entertaining amounts of content, at least that's how I see it
Man. This game seems so rad. I used to play Runescape way back in middle school and just watching this brings back a lot of memories. I wish the devs nothing but the best with this project.
As weird as it sounds I massively prefer smaller MMOs, some of my best moments in MMOs have been on servers where when you login every day and say hi in the general chat you get return helloes from people you know and perhaps enemies you fight a lot. If I end up on a server so big I don't ever recognise anybody I feel entirely disconnected from it, and it destroys the whole point of it being an MMO.
Love the ps1 classics gag. Soul reaver, pandemonium, medieval, silent hill, driver, spyro, ghost in the shell, THPS, twisted metal, tomb raider, Digimon rumble arena, gran turismo, abes oddesy. Josh has played so many games I like. That's why I love the channel
I actually like how their crafting system works, _but_ it needs to have more "recipes." Like make it so that if you start at the bottom and brute force your way up the tree then it plays how you presented it, but also have recipes that teach you the top-down way of acquiring certain specific things. In the process of following that recipe you discover other options.
That crafting system seems kind of cool. You can feel like you've discovered things. Be really awesome if you could craft high rarity gear by figuring out the combination. You could advertise your discovered piece and make yourself quite unique as a crafter.
I put this on my Steam wishlist when this video released. When it didn't come around - I think it was supposed to in May? - I kinda forgot about it. I was just going through my wishlist, saw this, and saw it was still "Coming Soon." Checked the discussions, only to find out it's a deck-building TCG now. Wonder if this would be worth revisiting, or if this video will just be a time capsule like videos of RS Classic are.
This has a ton of potential for the future dude. Someone who's in love with the vibes that were present in the old school days should be put on to write for this. So many cool things could be done to make the world feel like it matters.
I think the self reference and the joke style could actually make things interesting later. Like imagine that the beings in the world start trying to break from these jokes, and it becomes a story of things wanting to break through their cliches.
I just logged in for the first time. After recovering my account I guess I made in Sept 2021. And OMG the feeling I had when I logged in... I started playing Runescape in 2002 and spent so many hours on it. Logging into this game was like seeing an old friend I thought I would never see again.. Just an FYI - some things you pointed out that aren't similar to Runescape are infact similar to runescape. There was 30 inventory space in Runescape classic. Also the combat you couldn't run before 3 hits and couldn't eat while in combat. Pking was so fun in those days..
@@JP-pq9xi imagine playing runescape one day and out of nowhere they took out combat and replace it with a card battler system. Thats kind of what happened
Thank you for showing this game, it's delightful to see a team pick up a project inspired by the first MMO I ever played and fell in love with - it looks like they're doing a great job with it and hopefully they can polish off *just enough* rough edges to turn this into a real gem. Minor point of note because I'm a huge nerd for "classic PS1 games" - going from 30 item slots to 28 and adding an equipment screen was one of the big changes going from Spyro into Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, so even that was accurate to Genfanad's inspirations!
Ok Guys I think I have all of them: 1. Soul Reaver 2. Pandemonium 3. Colony Wars 4. Jade Cocoon 5. Fade to Black 6. G-Police 7. Medieval 8. SIlent HIll 9. Fighting Force 10. Armored Core 11. Deathtrap Dungeon 12. Rayman 13. Hogs of War 14. Driver 15. Spyro 16. Ghost in the Shell 17. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 18. Metal Gear Solid 19. Machine Hunter 20. Tomb Raider 21. Final Fantasy VII 22. Digimon Rumble Arena 23. Silent Bomber 24. Nightmare Creatures 25. Grand Tourismo 26. Oddworld Abe's Odyssey 27. Alundra 28. Barbie race & ride Great Vid as Always! Cheers!
Re the jokey style: you can make that work. I'm reminding of Diana Wynne Jones' book _The Dark Lord of Derkholm_ , which is a pastiche of generic fantasy novels --- the setting is in a fantasy world which is used by a tour group from _our_ world to run Lord-of-the-Rings-inspired fantasy tours, all done for real. It works because the fantasy world has its own history and people and hates this, but has to put up with it because the tour operator has a ridiculously powerful enslaved demon working for him. So it gets to be a pastiche of bad fantasy while _also_ telling a real story with real stakes. This game could relatively easily do something similar with its setting, so that as you explore you find out that the world's not supposed to be run by CLicHe and learn what it's really like.
Man, feels like forever since we got one of these. The Worst MMO Ever series is the video equivalent of comfort food for me, I like the Plays content but I've been craving more of this for months. Great video, thank you
Pro tip on story telling- you can create and use story tropes that are self aware and ironic to keep the story light and entertaining, but if you don't use those light elements to highlight serious emotional elements you are wasting a huge opportunity to create a good story. Stories like the anime One Piece and One Punch Man do this extremely well- overall the stories are light and silly right up until it isn't and that when it gets good. It's the contrasty between the silly and comedic elements that make the emotional moments that much more impactful. Movies like One Cut of the Dead, Kick Ass, and Serenity/Firefly all at with this dynamic with success. The Discworld series is the pinnacle of this type of story telling.
Without playing the game--disclaimer--I see the potential for this kind of contrast and it can be really good. It looks like there is a corporation that sells heroism, or introduces new monsters onto the game world, stuff like that? It could be a good theme, about how different kinds of heroes can exist for every fight. Like when heroics are impossible or make things worse (like The Feud) or seem that way (Morytania). Or how a truer hero might fight Cliche in a world otherwise teeming with monsters...electing some kind of thankless guerilleroism over a shtick...smthn like that. Idk.
@@LoserHands I like your ideas and interpretation of the idea I was trying to get across but I was thinking more along the lines of emotional impact. If you know you are reading, watching, or playing something you know to from the horror genre, you will be expecting dangerous and horrific things to happen, so when it does happen it's basically just giving you what you already expect. Since you are at some level prepared for that, it hits you only so hard. But if you are playing a game that has the reputation for being silly and comedic you'll be expecting jokes and goofy content, but if that silly game suddenly hits you with horror elements or a serious jump scare it will feel much more impactful than that same jump scare in a horror game. Think of a jump scare as like jumping off of a cliff- when you expect that to happen, you are ready in guarded state so it's like jumping off of a 10ft high cliff- yeah, of your aren't in good shape it might to you a little bit, but it's not any real danger. But when you are playing a comedy game it's like you're on a much higher point- you're just giving and having a good time- elevating your mood so to speak, say at 20ft off the ground, so when you jump off that cliff you fall further and the impact at the bottom hits twice as hard, if not more. The Dragon Quest games are notorious for this- you're playing a light hearted silly jrpg with talking slimes and angry mushroom people but then all of a sudden your main characters significant other is suddenly kidnapped by demons, or the towns friendly mayor turns out to be a mas murderer killing children at night. On their own those dark elements are interesting, but when they happen when you're not expecting, it has a greater emotional impact.
25:45 That's amazing, well done devs! ☺🙏 If only I could get that same kind of support in another game where I reported a bug on the 6th of February that is still there.
At some milestone point, I would love to see a "top 10 worst MMOs ever" list, where Josh goes over the 10 best MMOs he's found in the worst MMO series.
Speaking for myself, I absolutely appreciate the objective look you provide at mmorpgs. There’s already plenty of clickbaity video makers that say everything under the sun is the worst thing ever. So, I just want to say how much I appreciate your honesty.
I've been addicted to this game for 4 months, even when there was only 10 players on at a time the players are passionate and loyal, definitely a good video and captures the feel for the game. Devs are almost done balancing and fixing all the small things.10000% worth checking out.
New mic? Also the "classic PS1 game" joke i am SURE has been done by Yahtzee in a similar way (I think it was James Bond films!) That was a pleasing throwback
Absolutely loved Runescape Classic as it was a massive part of my childhood. This game brings back so much nostalgia for it. However the UI is abysmal. I will look into it at some point in time, if they ever change the UI.
19:04 I started playing this game yesterday and I discovered you can right click and inspect an item before you buy it and it tells you the required level to use it (plus the item stats). Maybe this wasn’t added until after this video came out, but yea you don’t have to buy an item and equip it just to find out if you can use it or not
I played this a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty neat. If I remember correctly rsc had the same you can't eat / retreat for 3 turns thing in combat
I like that the devs fixed the game immediately, whenever a dev responds to an issue a player has that gives them massive brownie points in my book. I've had devs of singleplayer games take a look at my saves and repair them for me and nothing endears me more to a game than a dev who cares even if the game isn't online. Guys when you start playing this game be kind to the dev and its players and try to become part of the community rather than destroy it because gems like this are rare and we don't want to ruin them before they can even reach their full potential.
the gameplay seems like exactly how i remember crash bandicoot: warped as a kid, including the walking back and forth from lumbridge to the bank for smelting
If you could, would you do a video of a mmorpg called Grand Chase? I've played it since 2009 with my older sister and have very fond memories of it, they put it back on steam recently and saw it went down hill since I played. It was developed by the same devs as Elsword.
The mix mash of styles is because they used different asset packs from online stores. I recognize Synty's in particular who sell art assets for Unity and Unreal. Particularly they're using assets from their Polygon Kingdom pack. I wouldn't have an issue with the use of packs, but I would say they could have been more selective in the style they chose and just stuck with one style. I find Synty's art to be very much their own and it doesn't mix very well with others, not that its a bad thing.
I've never played an MMO except Horse Isle when I was like 12, but I love watching these videos because I love seeing people so passionate for games. This one has piqued my interest more than most, maybe because it is so simple and the community seems so passionate.
It's a shame they changed it into a card based game, what attracted me to this game is that it felt like a spiritual successor rs1. This feels like a bait and switch and if i actually backed their kickstarter, I'd be requesting a refund.
One thing i enjoy is watching your cursor shoot to the top right of the screen before remembering in THIS game the minimap is in the BOTTOM right of the screen 😊
Yes! My favorite of the series' on Josh's channel. I know he has more projects now than when he started, but it's a shame that this series dropped from being monthly. It's too bad there wasn't an MMO called Sixty-Nine out there, but I'm looking forward to the day Josh does 'Worst MMO Ever? - Nightmare World'.
I was trying to figure out what Josh's audio in this video reminded me of, because it sounded VERY familiar. Then it hit me when he started saying the word "option". This sort of audio reminds me of TotalBiscuit's audio in his later career. Rest in peace you legend.
Shame to hear they closed down in april of this year. Then I read up on it...and I guess the developers came completely out of left field...decided to change the game into a card game without even asking or polling their small but loyal player base.. What the??
yeah just read that aswell, very weird choice, almost sounds like someone took over production not knowing the original idea and just tossed what they wanted in without care. no evidence behind this but its the only thing that would make sense.
the amount of grind so many people put into this, pales what I consider my 'grind' of a couple weeks getting to 27 smithing. this game was actually really fun and I miss it.
Runescape is already meme-y and self aware... I think that's why they leaned into that even more - they should have maybe not made that the entire premise of the game, though.. it could've been their version of Runescapes self awareness - them being self aware that they're copying a self aware game, I mean. Man, there's some inception going on...

Worth coming on and trying out great community
I agree. Jagex sadly just didn’t care enough about the original version of their game to fix the bugs that were breaking their game.
The fact they thought of backing up banks before a major update to their system of storage is what got me the most.

Considering mine was the only tile where he asked us to do this, mine looked REALLY out of place at the end when the tiles were stitched together. Don't know if they fixed it later or not.
....how exactly are they making money
I don't actually know the full answer to this. I just know the project lead paid us and that he told us they were receiving funding from donations from the community (patreon I think) Outside of that, as far as I knew he was paying out of pocket.
It's just a RSC private server right? Was it coded In java?

Where's its own identity/creative aspects
Other games get flamed for being copies whether self aware or not. Just because this looks "retro charming" doesn't mean it's great in comparison to all the other copies
If it grew into it's own thing then fair.

Josh, I hate to break it to you, but the inventory in RuneScape Classic held 30 items.

God I miss the days of going to the library and seeing almost all the computer being used by people grinding RuneScape

Great one! I usually use this series to help me go to sleep, because I don’t particularly care for MMORPG‘s, but I really like your voice. That said, I really enjoyed this episode, and the evaluation of a smaller indie title, from metatextual perspective of its place in the genre as a whole.
Right? Really digestible. Reminds me of Kurzgesagt.
I just wanna say - I'm glad you took time to yourself and slowed down on making these for a bit because everytime you make them it feels genuine and fun.
I like the idea of a smaller scale mmo made by people just trying to make a fun little game rather than trying to make the next WoW killer.
Yeah, having a community is part of what actually makes these things fun. Once people pass each other like they do in a high density urban environment, it's just another menial time sink.
Finally! my favourite series is back, dont know if you were busy but happy to see you back josh
The game has changed at this point, massively. It's now a MMO/CCG hybrid.
And it's legitimately free. Nice!

NGL, "Genfanad" sounds suspiciously like some sort of pharmaceutical product still awaiting approval from the government's health arm.

Josh is the GOAT
100% josh is reading out the entire planned run of games for "was it any good"
I actually like how their crafting system works, _but_ it needs to have more "recipes." Like make it so that if you start at the bottom and brute force your way up the tree then it plays how you presented it, but also have recipes that teach you the top-down way of acquiring certain specific things. In the process of following that recipe you discover other options.
That crafting system seems kind of cool. You can feel like you've discovered things. Be really awesome if you could craft high rarity gear by figuring out the combination.
You could advertise your discovered piece and make yourself quite unique as a crafter.
Despite all the anger and rage on the Internet, I really do like your happy and balanced reviews too. This was a great watch for many reasons.
Glad to see a return to the series, I love almost every episode of it and rewatch many of them on occasion.

On their own those dark elements are interesting, but when they happen when you're not expecting, it has a greater emotional impact.

it's so weird how i've never played this game before or seen it until now yet my brain is trying to recognise the map as places i've already seen lol
I would love to see Josh revisit this game in the future, see how it's changed
the gameplay seems like exactly how i remember crash bandicoot: warped as a kid, including the walking back and forth from lumbridge to the bank for smelting
If you could, would you do a video of a mmorpg called Grand Chase? I've played it since 2009 with my older sister and have very fond memories of it, they put it back on steam recently and saw it went down hill since I played. It was developed by the same devs as Elsword.
Big Dave is a great guy. A huge guy. I hope anyone who ends up playing doesn't spoil things.
"it almost feels like seeking validation through self loathing" woah Josh no need to call me out like that 😂
I was trying to figure out what Josh's audio in this video reminded me of, because it sounded VERY familiar. Then it hit me when he started saying the word "option". This sort of audio reminds me of TotalBiscuit's audio in his later career. Rest in peace you legend.
My god, you're right. This is why I watch Josh so much. Hell I still go back and watch TB every now and then.
F
I miss him a lot
When he said BUCKET. I was in stanley parable.
Shame to hear they closed down in april of this year.
Then I read up on it...and I guess the developers came completely out of left field...decided to change the game into a card game without even asking or polling their small but loyal player base..
What the??
yeah just read that aswell, very weird choice, almost sounds like someone took over production not knowing the original idea and just tossed what they wanted in without care. no evidence behind this but its the only thing that would make sense.
just when i decide to get into a new mmo I found out the devs messed up big time and that the project no longer exists :(
the amount of grind so many people put into this, pales what I consider my 'grind' of a couple weeks getting to 27 smithing. this game was actually really fun and I miss it.
We recommend you to give Remote Realms a try next!
The game is has shut down as of April 2024 sadly
While I wait for this video to premiere, I might as well re-watch some older Worst MMO Ever
aaaaaaand it turned into card game wtf....
I love your narrative. It's not simply a review like other guys do, you actually describe the gameplay and what you have done and I find it amazing.
Runescape is already meme-y and self aware... I think that's why they leaned into that even more - they should have maybe not made that the entire premise of the game, though.. it could've been their version of Runescapes self awareness - them being self aware that they're copying a self aware game, I mean. Man, there's some inception going on...
