Before the internet I had been reading about Larry Scott's shoulder workout since the early 1970s but it never made much sense in just print. To finally see it all on video, demonstrated properly by Larry Scott himself, makes me feel like I finally found the Holy Grail.
I believe Vince Gironda developed his shoulder routine. Shoulders were Larry's weak spot so he went to Vince. Arnold looked great but was smooth until he found Vince and got diet advice.
I want to thank VANOTON from the deepest of my heart for bringing up this rare video which is full of knowledge from the never again ,the one and only Larry Scott!!
I gave up on lifting at age 35. Now at 60 and using this exercise after going back on the weights have built my delts better than anything I ever did. larrys book build those guns is a treasure chest.
The book is called loaded guns. I don’t know why the person wrote 70 to 80 years from now, but jacked simply means mass, shape, and definition. It would look like one is taking steroids
@@bystudios2972 His story is too unbelievable to not be true. His pic also looks like he is old enough. I myself have met in person Lee Haney, Chris Dickerson, Boyer Coe, Superstar Billy Graham, Big John Stud, Don Muracom and Kurt Angle in my local gym when they were passing through my city and needed to get a workout in. I even went to high school with powerlifting legend Mike Bridges, worked out with him at Bob Rosa's gym, and he was my neighbor for several years. That's one of the things that makes weight training so cool...one day you may find yourself alternating sets with a celebrity.
Like Arnold would say, when doing lateral raises, make your hands like they're pouring a pitcher of beer. This is what Larry is demonstrating here. Extremely effective!
Arnold incorporated many of Larrys deltoid training ideas in his own training with the way he performed his lateral raises and even his Arnold presses which is a variation of Larrys pressing method. All learned at Vince Girondas gym
Dear Wolf Master- Larry Scott was a master kinisiolgist; way before his time. The people you see in the background were seminar students of the middle 90's who were so amazed to see an old technique be so new and so productive. Larry was 54 when these videos were shot and was not a proponent of anabolics during this time. Larry admitted that the early 60's were his dark days when he did partake. If youve never studied the revised techniques that Larry and Bill Pearl used, I would advise you do so. I'm now 63 years old, still use these golden treasures, still compete, and would welcome the opportunity to compete against you where I know I could obliterate you; think about it. It might be a great contest.! Best of wishes.
The palms out tip is your invaluable! It is a major key to successful delt development. You won't find any of the newer guys with this kind of knowledge! Larry Scott, George Eiferman,Steve Reeves, these old school full body lifters had it right
Ollie Baker look into jason gallant , I see similarities in the two because they never just arbitrarily follow the pack . There is definitely a philosophic value to them and they also base their practice on what is actually working not what should work. Jason gallant is a lifetime natural which is fantastic as well .
In answer to your question, to me, the best advice come from old-school bb's such as Larry Scott, because they've gone through many age-related phases. And with the DBs held straight-arm when doing laterals, will eventually lead to injury. Larry's right, who got it from Vince Gironda: round the shoulders and bend the elbows
Scott had the best builders shoulders are around. Mass, symetry he had it all. Funny thing, though. If you look at him in this vid, he didn't have wide clavicles in the Don Howorth sense. He literally built his shoulders into the best around. And he has the look and demeanor of a TV anchorman.
always admired and envied larry scott's shoulders and arms still have a poster from the 60's of him in my garage. of course you gotta remember larry scott is only 5' 7" wide shoulders on a short frame makes him look even more massive. and a great guy too
Tommy Harris Just read your comment. I met Larry Scott in Chicago in 1986 .Was staying in the same hotel as he as . He was judging an IFBB contest He was a total gentleman -- very friendly & very helpful . He spent some hours out of his busy schedule answering all of the questions I asked him-regarding Bodybuilding. He spent the last TEN years of his life in very bad health . He died last year in March 2014 .Every single person who had any contact with him spoke of him , with the highest regard. He was the first MR Olympia & one of bodybuilding's great Icons.
Tommy Harris I was not aware of this myself - until his death last year , when his great friend Leroy Colbert -- made a posting on UA-cam in which he commented on Larry's really bad health . I think it was his heart. If it was - it must be related to his taking Steroids before the Mr Olympia. Arnold S is exactly the same . Arnold had to have two major heart operations 5 years ago . You can read about this on Google.
Tommy Harris Indeed - Larry Scott was 5ft 9ins yet carried nearly 20 ins arms. He had a huge physique on a small body. I think he said he used DIANABOL .
Larry Scott did indeed carry huge arms. He was the first Mr Olympia He was 5ft 7ins and openly admitted that he took DIANABOL in his competitive career. I was very sorry to hear that he died last year as he was great gentleman. I met him in Chicago in 1984 - he was a judge at a Mr America contest . I had a long conversation with him . He was most courteous and helpful . When he died last year his great friend Leroy Colbert -- stated on UA-cam that Larry Scott's health in the last 15 years of his life had been very bad . Mr Colbert also stated that Larry had told him it was as a direct result of talking Steroids . Truly sad to hear about such a wonderful person .
This is a real body builder... that is why Mr Larry maintained his body till the end, unlike today bodybuilder, after they stopped competing, everything gone(not everyone though but mostly...you know what I mean.)tq
@Hbue84 this is very interesting, if you think about it, the first part of the press is working the front and side delts the last part of the press is all tricep(if you lock out) the way hes doing the press very well isolates the side delt.

Thank you for the upload! Great content! One question, if someone could answer: what does he says at 2:43? "thats trap...if you do that you will never build big deltoids, because they are ---- " They are what? Greetings from Brazil.
He says, "...because they'll bully ya (you)," by which he means if the traps are too strong, they'll take too much of the workload and not allow your deltoids to do the work themselves and develop.
My traps are huge and i don't even train them anymore because they are over developed. I can't understand what he is saying, but I'm currently working on building my deltoids and I'm finding I'm getting great results even tho my trap are so oversized.
This is really different than my shoulder routines. I read to always keep your arms as straight as possible on lateral raises and to go through a full range of motion on the presses. Does anyone know Larry Scott shortens the range of motion on the presses and bends his elbows on the lateral raises? Is this a more effective way of working out the shoulders? Hope someone can help.
Know how to work your rear delts... Do side raises right, but squeeze you shoulder blades together throughout the whole set... I got this tip from a source, you wouldn't believe.
why is the student dressed up like a ballet dancer? i can't take him seriously, he obviously had time and thought to prepare for this video shoot and he chose to be a show off, but Larry Scott is trying his best to take him seriously and teach him valuable training techniques. Larry was a CLASS ACT, and if it weren't for Larry's presence in this video, i would find it a waste of time.
In another version he would lie down on 10 DEG incline bench face forward and do a little more range of motion. Looked like precursor of the Arnold Press.
Bullshit. Scott was known as one of the hardest (as well as smartest) trainers. The fact that you think the type of press he's demonstrating is "light" tells me that you've never done it.
what great advice, we will probably never get advice like this again, sadly bodybuilding today is all about drug cycles and site injections, I don't even follow it. To me anyway today's "champions" are a joke compared to people like Scott.
His form is terrible.. I know, he won the Olympia.. but lots of guys won the Olympia with really bad form. It's the drugs, and good genes. Ronnie Coleman, way too heavy on squats and he's had 10 back surgeries now.. he's only 54. In a wheelchair. Don't go too heavy, don't use bad form
Try the form he is advocating the way he says and you will see your mistake. This is real bodybuilding focusing on the muscle and not how much weight is being lifted. You can even do the exercise as he shows with no weight and you can feel the delts working.
Before the internet I had been reading about Larry Scott's shoulder workout since the early 1970s but it never made much sense in just print. To finally see it all on video, demonstrated properly by Larry Scott himself, makes me feel like I finally found the Holy Grail.
