I heard years ago on a documentary (most likely History Channel when they actually had history shows) that it was actually the winners that were sacrificed because “only the best for the gods”
@@r-zeatlfilms Yeah, people seem to think the negative result leads to death in ancient sports when it's consistently the opposite around the world. Mesoamerica, Rome, the various Chinese dynasties, winning/pleasing the right person/people in sport results in being killed. The reasoning may differ, but the end result is the same.
I don’t know but I feel like the Aztecs would want their gods to have the strongest servants possible so I think that it is interesting that the loser of the game was sacrificed.
@@r-zeatlfilmsIncorrect. There is in fact no good evidence for any direct sacrifice as a result of this game. Certainly no evidence that any of the winners were sacrificed.
the rituals of human sacrifice by aztecs and mayas where interesting, a friend from central-south mexico has a book thats like a diary of an aztec kid in tenochtitlan. an in it they mention that the kid had a friend who always had his hair hidden because he had a swirl on his hair, this was asosiated with beeing a children sended my the gods, however, they where executed to free them from their mortal body, but with children, the sacrifices where slow and very painful, because the more tears, the more rain, and better the harvest

Went to chichen itza last month...The tour guide read some info that said the game could simply be a 1-0 score that could last from 2 hrs to several days. It was played by the physically gifted and were treated like rockstars. That slope section in the animation was actually flat and only the team captain was playing back and forth on it waiting for the pass to score. However, the most interesting part of the arena was the actual build of the walls, its crazy how the sequence of how the stones were placed and the angle of the walls influence the acoustics: you can clap your hands on one side of the field and the ecos produced were straight out of a science fiction movie. The tour guide was speaking at regular volume from across the field and we could hear him no problem. Can only imagine how the sound of a roaring crowd who stood on top of the walls to watch would sound..How long is the field.? 160 yards!!!
Pretty sure I heard that originally it was the winners who were sacrificed, then they changed it to the losers getting sacrificed. Anybody able to shed light on this with some real evidence either way?
Nah, a head isn't that heavy. If they could bounce a medcine ball, you could probably bounce a head. And I don't think the teeth would last very long anyway...
Pre-colonial people of Mexico also played fire hockey, which is far superior to ice hockey in terms of skill and spectator appeal (I say this as a huge NHL fan).
It most likely depended on the place and time also. Both results seem to be found. It seems that Aztecs mostly sacrificed the losers, while the Mayans mostly sacrificed the winners. But it's likely that also changed with time.
Some probably would, some probably wouldn't. On the one hand it would be pretty... motivational. But on the other hand it would be scary and make the players nervous. People who are good under pressure would probably do better, while the others would do worse.
Imagine getting to survive if you lose in sports...
That’s a good motivator to win! 😂😳
i mean it's more entertaining than today's sports
Sometimes modern soccer players get killed for losing the game point.
Please react to Alexander The Great by ”EPIC HISTORY TV” really great content!
Actually as someone who has gone to the ruins of one of these, its not the losers who were sacrificed its the winners.

"History" Channel.
They made a mistake, the mayans acttualy, killed the winner(the captain of the team)as it was tough to be a promotion/rank up to ascend to the gods
I don’t know but I feel like the Aztecs would want their gods to have the strongest servants possible so I think that it is interesting that the loser of the game was sacrificed.
Maybe it’s because if it were the winners that were sacrificed people would lose on purpose
But the winners did get sacrificed, the video was wrong
@@brandonk.4864 From a modern point we would, but I think it was seen as the highest honor, to be sacrificed to the gods.
@@r-zeatlfilmsIncorrect. There is in fact no good evidence for any direct sacrifice as a result of this game. Certainly no evidence that any of the winners were sacrificed.
In the mayan version, the winners were the sacrified, as a reward for winning they got to be among their gods
I believe this was in all versions, it is just a misconception that the losers would die
@@realyoriginalchanel3218No one actually knows. There's no good evidence for anyone getting sacrificed at these games.

Fun fact: we still play pok ta tok in Guatemala and Mexico. Also the ball is around 20 pounds
