Just an FYI. I was taught as a gunsmith when you apply an acidic solution to something you need to neutralize it by soaking it in baking soda and water after you have the desired oxidation or patina finish. If not it will continue to oxidize even if you apply a coating to it. Superb craftsmanship. 👍
Reclaimed wood projects are great! The truck you made is soo nice! I like how you knocked off the paint on the brackets. Hidden compartments are always a plus!
That's a great looking chest. Love the idea of a "hidden compartment" Well done. The pallet boards look good. I made a coffee table from pallet boards a long time ago and they shrank an incredible amount over time, so that I have over 1/2 inch of space between each board !
You could always pre-drill a tiny hole before you add the cut nails. That would aid in the prevention of splitting. I had to do this on some old world style potato crates I was recreating. I hammered in nails for all of the fasteners.
I really enjoyed watching this with the tip for getting the patina on the metal being such a good idea. Your attention to detail is great, but I have a suggestion. Wouldn't slot headed screws look more in keeping than the cross headed ones?
What are you doing right before you add the screws to the hinge at 8:45 mark? Are you pre-drilling? What are you using? I can't tell. I have always had difficulty with hinges.
The drill bit he used is specifically for hinges, it centers the drill hole exactly to fit the hinge. Hold the hinge to work surface and insert the bit in hinge hole, it lines up hole exactly in center.

I have been collecting pallets to get this project started but am a little intimated since I only have a chop saw and a table saw. The over the potty cabinets sold in stores are not deep enough or big enough for towels and wash clothes. I love the colors and texture of the pallet wood and a wall mounted cabinet would be perfect! 32" W x 11" D with 2 shelves. Thanks!
They probably didn't but you can't see the screws unless your face is about 6 inches away from the handles. And I don't think too many people will notice or care.
Really Like it, to Critice AFTER is always simple, so I do it ;-) I would have choose simple slotted Head Screws (corners, etc) to fit the rustic look. You did it for the Nails.

That said, I was surprised that you only glued the planks instead of using biscuits or dowels. I don't remember the vinegar treatment to add rust which is scientifically cool. I love the rustic look but I don't see a reason to create/add real rust to the parts when there are better ways. Rustoleum has a paint that makes something look rusty. Plus, creating rust on the nails when only the nailheads will be showing, I don't get. Either dab the nailheads after they are nailed in or dab rustoleum rust paint on the heads. Just some things to think about
Did lots of things to make it look old / antique, then used phillips screws?? Liked the cut nails, and giving them character with the vinegar wash, slot screws also treated would have been best in my opinion. Nice job, like the simple design and hidden area. Very useable end product.
I've had this in my home since I released this video(almost 3 years now) and have had 0 issues with it. This wood was in a barn for years and then in my garage for a while before I built the trunk so it was done moving.
Nice build. But would have been nice tp see the hidden compartment as a slide out drawer otherwise you have to take out everything in the trunk to get to the hidden compartment. But i like the rustic look and nice choice with the nails. Definitely worth thumbs up
one suggestion for the straps if you want to go back and reuse cut nails put the small washer on the end of the cut male so the mail doesn't pull through

Best not to have music in DIY vids, this is annoying background noise for some. Would have liked to see the router in action, this is unclear. I'm a novice with router. Please show this in future. Why? Edge glue on the panels is strong enough for the panels. These boards aren't super flat anyways so I'm not sure how using biscuits would have helped anything.

You should per drill even for cut nails it can be under sized but it will prevent splitting
