You mention not being able to kill grunts with the throwing knife's heavy melee is one of your biggest gripes with the tool. You can fix that with the Assailant trait, but Assailant is never discussed even though it is shown in the trait section. I never run knives without Assailant, and I almost always run knives, the trait is essential.
I would like to see the knives (or all throwables) be replenished with ammo boxes with a trait. My biggest gripe with the knives is if you throw more of them out you still only get one back (without packmule) when you loot hunters or boxes. I'm okay with the tradeoff of damage to amount in inventory, but I do not like having to get 6 knives back by looting because I have a skill issue.
Ive mained the throwing knife for years now, and it's such an over looked tool. 6-7 knives that you can use as a regular knife for 1 perk point while also picking up the ability to throw melee weapons, and it's silent. It does have a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you only have to contend with missing due to the random throw patterns that go slightly left or right. Perfect for taking out everything except immolators. Throwing knife kills are also the most satisfying way to ambush enemies. Just throw, and pull.

That's one of the things I love about it. There's so much meaningful variety, and other than the flashbomb, there's no equipment that goes entirely unused.
Tbh that would make a lot of sense scale it up to be inline with the pitchfork, or do a 1 slot/2 slot and make the 2 slot a pike Tldr i dont want to only have the bayonets for pokey time
I’d think they’d try tying one shooting with the spear to assailant first. At the least they should carry over the ability to run while throwing to all the other throwables
13:24 Before they added the spear (which is overpowered and makes all the alternatives seem lackluster), I used to run axes, and I think they’re quite effective against bosses. Sure, if there’s another weapon lying around, I’ll use it, but if not, throwing two axes at a boss as it charges toward you and then attacking with your knife while retrieving the axes works really well (I'm ignoring the assassin here). I get that this video is about running a throwing weapon without a knife, but you pretty much need one-unless you're running the spear-because of the Immolators.
They actually reduced the damage throwing axes and knives do to bosses not too long ago. Before then, axes and knives were great at boss kills, but that nerf hit them hard.
@@HuntShowdownLab at this point it is just best to bring a sticky grenate with you. Otherwise you will loose your mind against the bosses at how long they take.
As someone who has done several melee 'only' prestiges, I can safely say that all this information is accurate and I wish I knew most of it years ago. I would like to add that with some horizontal fences, well... Some of the cracks that you definitely should not be able to throw things through just seem to work. I have thrown an axe through what seemed like near solid wall before. I recommend testing it out on random fences as you walk around.
1:38 u can also swap ur controls to be separate and its rare moments but I would recommend to do it. I had a moment where I traded with someone just because they hit me with bleed point blank, and instead of stopping my bleeding i swapped to their gun and died lol, same goes for ur jump and vault keys, nice to keep those separate incase u want to jump ontop of a frame on a window to peak but not go in or if you are body blocking a revive next to a window u dont end up vaulting out
I think it's worth to mention that you get ALL of your throwing knives back from just ONE toolbox, while you only get one back on the axes and spear (exception is the trait packmule which will give back two of said throw weapon).
7:40 Another throwable lost to the _Dead Horse Dimension_ 😔 Spear Fun Fact: That "almost" useless part for the spear and concertina is Throwing. All throwables, spear included, break wire on contact. *One* wire. This is only ever useful for concertina traps & arrows, which dont have many wires, if you have the sound to cover up all the throwing /breaking as you carve a tunnel through budles of wire, or it is a generally safe time to do so. But know that if you miss, you can thread the needle and launch your spear past all the wire you were trying to clear. A GIGANTIC pain at all, let alone during a fight without Frontiersman 😂
@@dtm20004 axe is pretty decent at the concertina it will destroy both the strand and the "knot" and can be thrown pretty well nonstop if you have 3 and just spam f between clicks
Eyy I've been waiting for this one to come out! Something you didn't mention is that Pull-Out damage is classified as melee damage, and is thus effected by Berserker, which can be absolutely BUSTED for killing meatheads and bosses. You don't even need a full set of throwing knives to kill a meathead in one go w/ berserker, so long as you run up and just grab them. Throwing knives were already really good for meatheads anyway :) at 3:19 there's a typo, it says "medum" instead of medium.
Great video! There is also a great use that I missed here: Throwings are great against the Assassin when you run out of stamina shot, because you can throw and pull them in the duplication ritual non-stop. This sistematically kills the copies while damaging (but not much) the boss. This also means that the boss will stay still in the process, allowing your teammates to concentrate the heavy attacks.
I just want to mention that even though this video is only a month old some of the info is already outdated. Recently I've been bringing throwing knives with me every single game and here's some things I experience differently than the video: - Throwing knives come in pairs of 8, not 6. - Grunts and Hives both die in one hit to the head or body, otherwise, the pull will kill them still. - Regular armoreds take two hits + two pull outs. (De pull out will stun them making it very safe) - You can kill barbeds safely with three throws. - Throwing knives kill hunters in a SINGLE throw to either the head OR body! In my opinion, these damage changes in combination with the two extra knives make throwing knives an extremely versatile option for only 30 coins!
Assailant makes the knives so much better against grunts, dogs, and hives. It makes the damage almost (if not the same) as the regular knife so you can one shot grunts and dogs to the body and hives to the head with a heavy melee, and you still get the benefit of throwing them
I still find that the spear is a good example of mild, if still noticeable power creep in the tool slot area. Either take the spear, or take a knuckle-knife. Otherwise you're often just taking option that you can find to be less competitive/requiring of more work to get the same effect. It sucks :(
Very accurate video... for all of 10 days lol It's good that the Throwing Spear got nerfed and the Throwing Knives got buffed with Update 2.1 but the timing could've been better.
Throwing knives with Assailant is an upgrade from the base knives in so many cases. One tap grunts to the head with a heavy, clear sound traps and to chip at bosses silently and stam efficient to boot. You could bring the normal knife, however with one trait point you get an extremely versatile one slot tool that can do almost everything aside from deal with immolators.
I recommend to add a sentence to throwing the tills at concertina, where the spear and knife come in decent. Brilliant and well prepared video btw. In my culture it's usually referred to that "no scolding is enough on an appraisal", but let me try to overcome my ancestors...😊
10:00 small correction: concertina armoreds can also be headshot from behind. Also I think spears got a small nerfs against water devils: I haven't been able to one-shot melee them since a recent update.
Bonus tip - it’s not very easy to see, but you CAN get a one shot on a concertina armored with a thrown axe to the back of the head. I got one the other day, was pleasantly surprised by it.
Typical hunt mechanics : 1° No stamina = slow melee but you can throw your spear over the compound during all day 2° New tools are always better than the old version. Who plays knives and axes after the spear update ? Spear is OP. The video is super complete, but it confirms that spear is best in 99% of the case. Thanks
11:00 Throwing knives vs hell hounds can be effective. A throw to the head can kill but for consistency try to hit the body then pull out when they attack you for the kill. Very handy method when you have no stamina.
The spear sucks. I know it is the best melee weapon so far but that's exactly what makes it bad, it doing every other throwable or actual melee weapons job and better is not fun for everyone else. whenever I die to a spear I don't go "damn he got me with a spear" its just oh yeah of course he got me with a spear.
Ya. It doesn't need assailant to be useful as a melee tool, quick animations, and the fact conduit and stam shots aren't hard to have. And let's not forget the spear didn't get the "tool nerf vs bosses" that the other melee tools got the patch before.
@@spacehitler4537It’s a literal spear. Try walking away from being hit by one. You won’t. It does more damage to your body than certain munitions would be able to.
@@spacehitler4537 Looking at game balance that makes sense. You get multiple bullets but only one spear. Two if you run a 7 point perk. I’d say this makes for a decent consolidation of fiction and reality. Time to kill is still very low in this game despite your point made in a belligerent way.
Having Determination with Conduit is not redundant. 3 minutes of stamina boost is short lived. You will find it runs out fairly quickly so determination gets its value after the clue phase. The caveat to this is if you bring or loot stamina shots and have magpie for the bounty stamina boost. I exclude events in reasonings as they are event only and change every event but you can also use a point for the Boon Envelope that gives 4 minutes of every boost. If you pair all of this, that is when determination becomes a redundant trait. It also becomes redundant if you are not maximizing using your stamina throughout the match. So it’s intended for melee builds (bomb lances, katanas, sabers, bayonets, talons, etc.)
How far away approximately can you hear an immolator being killed by being blown up (like your spear at the beginning)? I always thought it was much further away and bumped into someone thinking they were a compound away. My audio was broken until just recently and had little to no knowledge of what sounds should sound like at a distance.
Haven't measured it, but i'd expect if you hit an immolator in the center of one compound, it could be just barely heard in the middle of the next compound over.
@@HuntShowdownLab He must have been moving very fast then. I heard it and it seemed faint. I walked for a few moments to see if I could see him approaching Terminal and he was already in the bushes ahead of me with his spear ready. Never heard a footstep the whole time.
Id like to add as a throwing knife enjoyer that hellhounds are not hard when they dont have a mask since if you crouch and throw as they charge at you the headshot is super easy to land and you can one tap 6 of those bad boys if you need to.
I think that throwing knives and axes are actually quite good against bosses. I allways throw them at the boss run to it and hit it twice while I pull them out and repeat. It's much much quicker than just using your melee tool.
I kinda think this video is a bit of a miss. Holding interact to pick up is huge for boss killing and opening doors with the spear. If you stand against the door and hold interact while throwing the spear you will never exit the spear item slot and can just keep throwing pretty much as fast as if you'd have multiple spears. It's the fastest way to open a door with the spear and while you do mention opening them with throwing and pulling I think you should've mentioned to use auto interact here too. Sure, you mentioned it before but I think it's okay to be a bit redundant in a video like this. I know your video kinda shows it being done this way but well it might not be obvious for everyone. For bosses it has the same principle. If you huge a boss and just spam throw and auto interact you will kill them quite fast. Harder against assassin but you can do it while he is doing his cloning move and if you do it with multiple people like this you can interrupt the move a few times. It's also handy against assassin to hold and interact while you throw and get near him so you have an easier time picking the spear back up. Also should probably mention that spear throw animation has multiple steps. If you just hold right click it actually just puts it in throwing mode for you but everyone else still sees the spear lowered. If you just click after this you do the whole throwing animation which is a little delayed. If you hold the fire button while in this mode you prepare to throw it (just like the other throwing weapons when you hold fire mode) and now other players can see you are preparing to throw it. This cuts down on some of the throwing animation. It can make a big difference between hitting and missing your throw if you don't realize this and should probably be mentioned. Also spear kinda has different controls to the other throwing tools so should probably be mentioned too even if it's kinda obvious after using it for one round. Again, never hurts to be a little bit redundant in these kind of videos. Assailant was also kind of under discussed for this video in my opinion. Think you should've really just gone through all the throwing weapons separately first and show the differences between non-trait and traited versions. Some people don't like to take assailant on axe for example because they prefer the normal animation. For throwing knives it's probably just a net positive to take assailant. Could have probably gone over throwing world melee items too. I know they're not really a tool but well... assailant is here, might as well explore those too.
"Fun" fact about throwing... The spear throw is TWICE as fast as the knife and axe at 60 m/s. The knife and axe both travel at 30 m/s when thrown. Yes, the knife and axe come out at the same speed despite the axe dropping faster. Not that it matters when the spear is twice as fast and does basically everything better, but I think it's fairly reasonable to expect spear nerfs at some point.
I always feel like the throwing axes are way below the other two options, I just don't ever use them. I very frequently use spear and throwing knives, they are both very useful. Axes just feel worse in every category for me, and I think a big part of that is because you only get two.
I feel like assailant is overlooked a little bit here. Knives benefit the most from assailant, basically doubling as a normal knife and providing a fifth tool slot.
Yeah, I had an assailant section recorded, but I'm not sure what happend to it. I think I accidently trimmed it off of the VO, and didn't notice until after upload. Regardless, the 2.1 update made the throwing knives' melee kill to the head or (I think) a throw to the body too. The monster and PvP sections of this are unfortunately out of date already.
But it actually encourage me to use different builds, now im really good with the bow. Figure out how to get a 100 meter head shot. Never got in live game. PB 60-70 meters.
Spear is basically a weapon slot melee weapon that they put into tools, it's so sad how OP it is and how it makes axes just not worth taking at all if you need them for PVP.
Melee weapons ever since the bat got introduced has seen substantial power creep inside its category each update. It seems like now if someone is doing melee anything its almost always the spear and for good reason. Crytek is unfortunately really slow to make balance changes to hunt but I hope one day we can see the melee weapons get a pass before they add something like 300 dmg explosive spear tool.
@@mackenzieobrien7579 The bomblance is balanced around it being 3 slot and in terms of pvp it being able to 1 shot isn’t exactly unique compared to recent additions. The katana I’m fairly certain out ranges it with martialist and the spear can be thrown along with not even taking up a weapon slot. Many of the melee weapons in the game are fine but these new additions make most of them redundant.
Throwing knifes are so bad, they need a buff You have also missed some features but I want to keep them as a local secret In my opinion throwing knives should get 3 extra knives from frontiersman and a single grenade box restock should give 3 knives instead of 1 And to make it somewhat good compared to spear it should get enough damage to melee grunts and nearly kill hunters, as well as have better throw speed and time between throws Honestly, in general, I think the perk Pitcher should be buffed and give next "Your throwing weapons will have a visible throw arc and your melee throwables (axe and knives) deal more throw damage and fly further, you can sprint while preparing a throwable weapon (axe, knife, any consumable throwable that has a throwing arc)" Spear is good enough it doesn't need to have throw speed and damage buff from Pitcher, but throw arc would be nice
The spear is completely broken. It's a horrible addition to the game in it's current state. It has made every other melee weapon and tool completely obsolete. It one-shots hunters. It melts bosses. It one-shots all AI. It has a lot of reach. And you get all of that for just one tool slot, so you can still bring two guns on top of that. There is no reason to use anything else. That's just bad game design.
I find it weird that we can run and throw a heavy ass spear but not run and throw a tiny knife or axe, in reality we could probably run and throw all 3 without a problem
1300hrs into the game i did not notice you can kill grunts quieter if throwing to their head..when im near people i always throw to their body for "stealth" 😂
Just buff throwing axes and knives to be in the same level as spear so we can actually take axes or knives instead because I don't wanna waste 10 minutes to kill a boss by cheesing it just because i dont have spear + stamshot
Using any of them besides the spear is using them wrong right now, unfortunately. For the rest of the utility, just have a melee attachment on your gun. If you don't take spear, you're nerfing yourself. It's a pocket crossbow in a tool slot and it's broken.
How sick are you of comments telling you to stop saying melee wrong lol Also you may have thought it too obvious to mention but pulling from concertina husks counts as a melee attack and will cause damage and bleeding on your hunter.
What is the point of testing when spear is currently the only good throwing tool option? If you use throwing knives, you are bad at the game. If you are using throwing axes, you don't understand the meta. Spear is the only melee throwing tool you should be bringing if you are trying to use optimal builds.
At the end of the day it doesnt matter because its not like that knifes and hatchets are bad, spear is so busted that not picking it sets you at huuge disadventage because Everybody else will be playing it.
i think you see that crytak thought over the axe an knives but scraped that all for the spear and goes all out i have no problem with gettling killed by a throwing axe because its need skill by a spear a arm shot is good for killing me i hate that dame thing and that it is no thing you need maby 2 tool slots because it never the same slot than a brallwer or something like that but crytak and listen aswell than changing things too the right its the same like the kantana just stupid and made me quite the game for good
At this point, yes :P I grew up saying it wrong, and never really knew until the last few years. I just haven't taken the time to re-train my brain on it. At this point, I enjoy the comments...

6:29 the spear isn't useless for concertina, you need to throw it at the wire. Certainly the worst of the 3 at that job, but it works in a pinch!
Id like to add as a throwing knife enjoyer that hellhounds are not hard when they dont have a mask since if you crouch and throw as they charge at you the headshot is super easy to land and you can one tap 6 of those bad boys if you need to.
tl;dr: spear beats everything by a long margin, with the exception of clearing concertina but is still possible with throws but slow
Chickens being the real bosses of 1896 🐓
I want a giant chicken now as a wild target.
I think that throwing knives and axes are actually quite good against bosses. I allways throw them at the boss run to it and hit it twice while I pull them out and repeat. It's much much quicker than just using your melee tool.
Unlucky upload timing with the new update, sadge.. new throwing tool guide when? :D
Eventually... Got some other stuff brewing first, but it 100% deserves an update.
S tier hunt content
I always feel like the throwing axes are way below the other two options, I just don't ever use them. I very frequently use spear and throwing knives, they are both very useful. Axes just feel worse in every category for me, and I think a big part of that is because you only get two.
If the spear is going to be a tool, please make the combat axe a small weapon slot
Thank you for the amazing video!
I think there's something missing about the sound that Hives make per weapon.
I miss the days of using poison ammo with the silent nagant against the water devils
16:53 Conduit is 5 points, not 4
great info
Thanks for watching!
After the new update all tolls dont one shot on the head like bullets?
The throwing knife doesn't on melee attacks.
Nice video. Too bad it took so long to edit because it came out and was already outdated.
Spear ist Not useless against Concertina! You can throw it against it ! ITS pretty effective
I know that now :'(
@@HuntShowdownLab we are a Community and can learn from each other :?
Will we get an update to this now that spear has been nerfed hard and the knives are absolutely godly now?
Maybe eventually. I've got lots of topics on my to-do list, so it depends on that.
If my observation is correct: when meathead falls on your spear while he dies, the spear is also gone...
Wait until you hear about the bomblance
@@mackenzieobrien7579 The bomblance is balanced around it being 3 slot and in terms of pvp it being able to 1 shot isn’t exactly unique compared to recent additions.
The katana I’m fairly certain out ranges it with martialist and the spear can be thrown along with not even taking up a weapon slot.
Many of the melee weapons in the game are fine but these new additions make most of them redundant.
spear can broke consertina by throwing, axe also can do same
Determination does not increase Stamina regen, at all - it only shortens the delay until Stamina starts regenerating. It's pretty underwhelming
make a complete guide on how to throw games
I have an expecially honed skillset for that.
@@HuntShowdownLab me and the boys are waiting
you can throw the spear to destroy concertina wire
Throwing knifes are so bad, they need a buff
You have also missed some features but I want to keep them as a local secret
In my opinion throwing knives should get 3 extra knives from frontiersman and a single grenade box restock should give 3 knives instead of 1
And to make it somewhat good compared to spear it should get enough damage to melee grunts and nearly kill hunters, as well as have better throw speed and time between throws
Honestly, in general, I think the perk Pitcher should be buffed and give next
"Your throwing weapons will have a visible throw arc and your melee throwables (axe and knives) deal more throw damage and fly further, you can sprint while preparing a throwable weapon (axe, knife, any consumable throwable that has a throwing arc)"
Spear is good enough it doesn't need to have throw speed and damage buff from Pitcher, but throw arc would be nice
Poison knifes would be a good addition agains ai.
*Can't wait for Spear nerf.*
I'm sure 99.99% of the Hunt Playerbase thinks:
*1 hit killing a Hunter in the Foot is Pure Bullshit.*
I hate to say it but uhm… 3:46 Trow Prep
Spear is the best. The end. No need to ever "prefer" something else.
" so spears trivialize..."
Using any of them besides the spear is using them wrong right now, unfortunately. For the rest of the utility, just have a melee attachment on your gun.
If you don't take spear, you're nerfing yourself. It's a pocket crossbow in a tool slot and it's broken.
How sick are you of comments telling you to stop saying melee wrong lol
Also you may have thought it too obvious to mention but pulling from concertina husks counts as a melee attack and will cause damage and bleeding on your hunter.
Ok, now they need buff the other melee
What is the point of testing when spear is currently the only good throwing tool option? If you use throwing knives, you are bad at the game. If you are using throwing axes, you don't understand the meta. Spear is the only melee throwing tool you should be bringing if you are trying to use optimal builds.
At the end of the day it doesnt matter because its not like that knifes and hatchets are bad, spear is so busted that not picking it sets you at huuge disadventage because Everybody else will be playing it.
i think you see that crytak thought over the axe an knives but scraped that all for the spear and goes all out i have no problem with gettling killed by a throwing axe because its need skill by a spear a arm shot is good for killing me i hate that dame thing and that it is no thing you need maby 2 tool slots because it never the same slot than a brallwer or something like that
but crytak and listen aswell than changing things too the right its the same like the kantana just stupid and made me quite the game for good
Spear has been significantly nerfed after the update
So carry a bomb lance. Got it.
It's gonna be a another sad day when they finally nerf the spear
I started this project before the 1896 update, and had to revise it twice before release...
thats a lot of words for "just use a spear"
And you said nothing about rhe perk Assailant...
I cut it from my audio recording on accident and didn’t notice until too late :(
Hearing it pronounced "Me Lee" vs "May Lay" is slightly irksome.
lol "Mee-Lee" weapons
they just make the throw knife 1 shot thow to the upper body
Have tried it yet, but I think the 2.1 update did just that.
Welp, this aged…quickly?
I had to update it twice while making it. I’m just glad I got it out before I had to start from scratch… lol.
Hah I can imagine. Good stuff, just comedic timing
TL;DW: BUY A SPEAR
Spear needs to get nerfed or no contest at all
Make me.
Are you saying melee wrong on purpose? 😂
At this point, yes :P
I grew up saying it wrong, and never really knew until the last few years. I just haven't taken the time to re-train my brain on it. At this point, I enjoy the comments...
I HATE THE SPEAR
4 ducking commercial breaks in 8 mins of content. wtf yo
You can actially throw the spear at concertina to destroy it!
Yeah, for some reason I didn't think to try throwing it. Thanks for the addition!
may-lay. may-lay weapons
