got it. Love it. replaced 15 year old 500. just a quick clarification: It comes with a mount that works fine on a typical stem, but I agree, an out-front mount is a big improvement.
I have enjoyed my Garmin 130 for the past three years, and the Connect app is useful enough for me to track my ride data. I've only gotten lost once but I just used my phone to get my bearings and that got me back on track. Also, my 130 sits on the handlebars right next to the stem, and it works for me. It's good to know I can get the 130 Plus now and have a familiar interface to work with.
The 130 plus is a great computer to start on. I've got my daughter (11yo) using a 130 plus while I use a 530. Group track, incident detection, and the ability to pair with my Varia radar are all great safety features.
Good detailed review but surprising to see you comparing it to the 830/1030 rather than the 530. Highlighting the differences to the next model up would surely be more useful as that's the trade-off many will be considering - especially as the 530 has the features you highlight as missing from the 130+. I imagine you get direction from Garmin on such matters (who may not want folk searching for deals on the 'older' 530 with colour screen better mapping and a mount) but that undercuts the value of CW as a resource for useful information.
I have had a Garmin Edge 500 since 2010 and it still works perfectly EXCEPT it no longer is recognized by my computer. Not sure why and I have done all the usual things with Windows and Garmin support to get it recognized again. Nope. So, I have done some online shopping and it looks like this Edge 130 Plus is the ticket for me. Interestingly, aside from the button layout, the physical device appears to be exactly the same as the 500. Finally, I want to thank Rupert for this review. Quite honestly it was incredibly well done. Well organized, fast paced and very, very informative. Well done young man!
Thank you. Just bought an edge 130 plus, this video made the difference in my decision. Also bought the k edge front race mount for my mtn bike. Just your average guy wanting some cool tech for when I rode 15/30 miles at a time.
I have to say that your review was pretty much bang on with this device. It gets the job done well. Battery 🔋 life isn’t good if you don’t leave the light 💡 on in the winter ❄️ months, with live tracking on and connected to a power meter, heart ❤️ rate monitor and radar detector. I do find the climb 🧗♀️ feature particular useful when you upload a route. It lets you prepare yourself for those climbs especially when you don’t like climbing. I say excellent money 💵 for what you are getting.
Thanks for the great overview of this device. Gave me a better understanding of its features. Very helpful. Went out for its 1st ride this am. Got a really good deal on it with Amazon Prime day. Thanks again.
I have yet to see a review of any of the Lezyne computers except on DC Rainmaker's UA-cam channel. That said, this was a solid review Rupert, as usual.
im looking for a computer and looking into the 530 instead of 130 for the navigation map, but you're thinking of going the other way, what do you think the 530 is lacking for you to consider doing that?
@@Fromatic I was unimpressed with the 530 map because it shows roads only on a close zoom and I had to watch it closely or I’d miss a turn. Zoom out and the smaller roads disappear. It was a while ago. Maybe it’s better now. I got the 130 and I’m good. It’s tiny and I love that. I check the phone maps when I stop.
@@palicar Got you thanks, I ended up picking up the 130 today also as it was just £100, couldnt justify the extra £150 for the 530 when I can just get my phone out if I really need it, and sounds like it was the right call if the the 530 map isnt as useful as it looks
I’ve been using the 130 for a while now and it is a great little computer. It does all I need it to as I know where I ride intimately and should I get into a spot of bother, I’ve always got my phone with me. It’s a shame about the outfront mount as that is an additional £20! It paired with all my sensors easily and I really can’t see why I’d need the plus version over the basic 130. If I needed more functionality, I’d go for the 530 I think... if I was sticking with Garmin...
What’s the battery like on your 130? I’m disappointed with mine. I’ve never seen more than about 7 hours from full charge and even less in cold temperatures
@@jimdennison I foolishly forgot to stop it the other day and it was still recording 138 hours later! 🤣 it was recoding nothing though as I’d turned it off. It was only when I decided to use it today and then downloaded the ride it popped up on Strava! My short 25km ride had the worst av speed I’ve ever posted at 0.1kmh🤣. On a more serious note though, I’ve not tried to use it for a 7hr ride, but it lasts for well over a week of hour plus rides. More like 12hrs. If it’s anything like my garmin watch. They knob up the battery life each time they update and then it settles down for some reason?! I’m not likely to do any 7hr plus rides any time soon though, so I’ll just charge it when I need to.
Good to hear the experiences of battery life. I have the Edge 130 (not the Plus) and the battery life is poor. Max of 6-7 hours and as low as 3 hours at or below 3-4C.
I’m happy with it. Everything i need for now. Pairing it with my speed/cadence sensor and broadcasting my HR using my garmin instinct watch. Can’t afford a power meter for now😅
This is an amazing little device. An update to enhance the maps would be good, there's a bit more detail they could squeeze out of that little screen. I use the maps feature but with Google maps on my phone mounted to the stem. It lets you turn off the phone screen and just let Google Maps speak the directions. Also I paid £120 new but you can get them for just under £100 new if you hunt around.
Ride Caen to Nice using this device and it pivked up anout 95% of turns correctly and a wrong way if you missed the turn. Slightly annoying that it sometimes mixed up turns with curves in the road.Good up Ventoux with vorrect elevation.
130 looks like a tamagotchi compared to the Bolt. I bought a Wahoo even though I have a 935 watch.Display size, navigating, configuration over the phone is better on Wahoo
though I don’t use either, Wahoo looks better at first glance specwise, also display size is slightly bigger, I believe their heart rate monitor is also good
I love the video! But can anyone answer whether I can pair edge 130 plus with my garmin forerunner 245 for heart rate? And if I'm on a ride should I turn both the watch and the computer on or just the computer? Thank you!
Does the climb pro will only be showing if you have downloaded the course before your trip? Since it doesnt have garmin maps loaded. Or it still shows on any ascends?
my edge 130 had crap battery life. I got it replaced and so did that. Like battery quickly drains even when unit is off, and running it gets 6-8 hours, well below spec.
I’m enjoying the bike so far ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
I have had 2 of the standard 130 fail on me with battery issues. Both times the it only turns on when connected to USB. Garmin won't fix them if outside guarantee.
Does anyone know how to get the avg HR as a % of FCmax? It's my favorite indicator and i seem to have lost it by switching from the edge 500 to the 130 Plus. Thanks.
I think the lack of a map is a pro. Way too many squiggly lines. I even removed the maps from my Elemnt Bolt. Way better. All I need to know is when to take a turn. If I am really lost I will whip out my phone and look at a proper map. (or ask someone :-)) 12 hours is a bit low though for an all-day ride. (but a powerbank should fix that).

Hi Drew, I will attempt to answer most of your questions: 1. A third party app is something like Strava which allows you to measure speed, distance, and other data.. You can even compare your speed on a given route with other users. 2. Yes, this computer as Rupert stated is designed to work by itself, but it is easier to setup via your phone through a special app from Garmin. 3. In order to receive certain kind of data like cadence, power, and heart rate you will need to have sensors that can communicate with your device through either bluetooth or ant+ 4. Whilst they don't provide an out front mount, they do provide handlebar/stem mounts 5. You don't need to use your phone for this particular Garmin device, but their are other devices where you do. 5, Glonass, Galileo, and GPS are all satellite standards. The first is from Russian, the second is from the European Union, and the third is from the USA. They basically allow your device to do navigation. You want a device to be able to do all three for best results. 6. Finally, a decent bike compute that utilizes navigation is going to cost at lease $150. Lezyne has some of the least expensive devices. You should check them out as well as Wahoo.
