Spearfishing Hawaii 2019: Taking Out Invasive Fish In The RGM 6 Dive Tournament

- In today's episode we are spearfishing on the North Shore of Oahu, and taking out some invasive fish during the RGM6 Dive Tournament hosted by the Koolau Dive Club(link below). Invasive fish are very problematic for Hawaii's reef because they eat endemic species as well as other food sources our local fish rely on.
The 3 different types of invasive species are Roi(Peacock Grouper), Toau(Blacktail Snapper, and Ta'ape(Bluestripe Snapper). You can find them on nearly any reef structure, there is no size or bag limit so feel free to catch as many as you can to remove them from the water.
I'd like to give a big thank you to the folks that made the event possible, it was incredibly organized and a great opportunity for new divers to get their gills wet. I'm looking forward to next year's tournament.

There comes a point where it actually damages ths reef removing large metal objects or tires that are covered in reef and coral beacuse new coral has grown on it and due to it being there for so many years life forms all around it make a home of it.

The roi you can eat, toau and taape are better.. less ciguatera. But they all make good fertilizer 😏

Great idea for an event. Though i believe you shouldnt take trash thats already totally grown over. Removing more marine life than protecting imo
