    Finally, someone gets it. Thinner gauge for lower tunings gives more clarity, but it also requires better control and technique.

      For metal this works and for higher gain rock this works. Billy Gibbons uses at light gauge and his tone is thick. Low gain Jazz or blues thicker strings are better. Higher gain helps to coax thick frequencies out if low gauge strings are used . Don’t you hate it when someone explains trivial shit like this that you didn’t ask to know about that could not be entirely correct. I will let myself out. 👹🤣

    Not a fan of super heavy gauge strings for this exact reason. Tone gets way too rounded and muted on the lower strings and I don’t like how they fret either. That being said, I have no idea how he gets away with a 58 on a 25.5” scale in F#.

      I remember having an old Ibanez 7 in drop F# with a 64 (set it up by accident this way, was going for drop G#) and to my surprise it was still awesome. Intonation obviously was a hair off but the floppy feel of the strings and the snap of the attack was something I WASN'T expecting to be so satisfying and still playable.

    I have been using the heaviest gauge strings (and highest string tension possible) for Drop F tuning for the past two years. I just switched to light strings upon watching this and it's true. There is too much bass frequency in the heavy gauge strings so the DI distorts improperly. With the heavy gauge strings, maxing out the tone knob on the TS808 helps but makes the tone sound chunky instead of heavy and I always wondered why. With the lighter gauge strings, the DI distorts properly and sounds heavy.
    It's analogous to the difference in timbre of playing a note high up on the fretboard on a low string vs. playing that same exact pitch note in the middle of the fretboard on a high string. The note on the low string sounds rounded off and dull vs. on the high string sounds clear like a bell... because there is less bass frequency in the DI. As we know, too much bass in the signal causes muddiness and does not distort properly.

    • @Ignore14
      @Ignore14 3 роки тому

      That's interesting, I'm using a light to heavy 5 string set on a 4 string bass, (for drop A) but I noticed there is way too much bass on the low notes and it is distorting kinda weirdly. Pretty sure my low A is too thicc

    My ideal set for 7 string with a 25.5 inch scale and standard tuning is 0.08, 0.11, 0.15, 0.24, 0.32, 0.42 and 0.52/0.54. The high E with 0.08 string makes bending easy, gives a snap and also does not pop out so much in the mix when playing a chord (less dominant). The 0.15 G is more in balance tension wise with the high B and D string and makes bending easier than a 0.16

      Well its actually not about being good at setting up a guitar. Having F# on a 25.5 doesn't really work because of intonation. And with a 58 there is so little tension it only sounds good when the string is open.
      No matter how good you are at setups you can't make a low note intonate properly on a scale length that is too short.
      .74 is what a lot of people recommend for F# F and drop E because that is the maximum gauge you can use and it not end up sounding bass like. And even then a 27 inch scale guitar isn't enough to make F# be properly intonated all the way up to the 12.
