The amazing Minnie Ripperton still astounds people nearly 50 years later!!!!! I have always loved this song and this live performance is from God. Also thats babies breathe in her hair
Voice of an angel
Minnie is simply amazing. I was very young when I discovered her music back in the 70’s when my cousin who worked at CBS records sent me an album when I was 12. By the time I was 15 she had died 😢to this day I still have some of vinyl records I brought so many years ago. Try these songs from her : “Seeing You This Way” and “Perfect Angel” .
Oh wow
A very lovin' reaction 🥰! Lovin' You was the fourth single released from Minnie Riperton's 1974 album: Perfect Angel. It was written by Minnie Riperton and Richard Rudolph (Minnie Riperton's husband) and produced by Richard Rudolph and Stevie Wonder. The song reached #1 on The Hot 100, #3 on the R&B and #4 on the Adult Contemporary charts. It was ranked as the #13 song on the Billboard Year End Hot 100 singles of 1975. Lovin' You was ranked at #46 on Billboard's Top 50 Love Songs of All Time. Also, Shanice Wilson covered Lovin' You in 1991 (Inner Child album) and shot a music video for the song as well. Mariah Carey has cited Minnie Riperton as a major influence on her singing career.
Richard Rudolph began composing "Lovin' You" in 1971, while he and Minnie Riperton were living in Chicago. The couple later moved to Florida, where work on the song continued after their daughter was born in 1972. Riperton developed the final melody, while Rudolph wrote the lyrics and the bridge. Minnie Riperton was offered a contract with Epic Records a few years later, and the couple moved to Los Angeles to record the album Perfect Angel. When Epic asked Riperton whom she wanted to produce the album, she named Stevie Wonder. Wonder, by then one of the biggest names in American popular music, was a fan of Riperton's work, and agreed to the collaboration. However, Stevie Wonder was signed to Motown Records; so in order to avoid contract conflicts he was credited under the pseudonym "El Toro Negro", Spanish for "Black Bull", as Wonder's astrological sign is Taurus. For the same reason, Wonder only agreed to be a producer for the project as co-producer along with Richard Rudolph, resulting in the production company Scorbu Productions being created specifically for the project.
Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph (November 8, 1947 - July 12, 1979) was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is a singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You" and her five-and-a-half-octave vocal range. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the "Queen Of The Whistle Register."
Born in 1947, Minnie Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group: The Gems. Her early affiliation with the Chicago based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backing vocals for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. While at Chess Records Minnie Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection from 1967 to 1971.
On April 5, 1975 Minnie Riperton reached the apex of her career with her #1 single "Lovin' You". The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album titled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Minnie Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and in April she underwent a radical mastectomy. By the time of diagnosis the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with a breast cancer diagnosis, but she did not disclose that she was terminally ill. In 1977 she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Minnie Riperton died of breast cancer on July 12, 1979 at the age of 31.
On June 7, 2009 TV One's Unsung series premiered an episode on Minnie Riperton's career and life. It included interviews with her husband Richard, son Marc, daughter Maya, sister Sandra Riperton and many others who worked with her.
