    It's immensely frustrating that nobody in the US seems to know every railroad crossing has a big blue sign near it with a toll-free number to call and the crossing's ID number, so the dispatcher can stop trains. These collisions don't need to happen!

      True and the road crossings need to have longer rise/run with areas level across the tracks the span of two piggyback rigs. The slopes on either side should be about the same distance to ensure rigs won't get stuck at any point in the crossing. Adding early warning signals before rigs begin going up the slopes toward the crossings and increasing the visibility of those signs might also improve safety.

      Not just the conductor (who doesn’t drive the train) but the engineer or motorman, who is the person behind the throttle. I have a friend, who was a conductor on SEPTA (Philadelphia’s commuter line). He was the person who had to get off the train to check if they hit the person or object that was on the tracks. Too many times if it was a person, it was because they chose to end their life in an extremely selfish way.

      They also can be put on full pension after a certain number of incidents, irrespective of service. Footplate union is very strong on this, by me that number is 5, after that you are put on mandatory pension, and every incident they offer full counseling as well for the crew. Not many drivers get through their entire career with zero incidents, generally they are on no 2 to 4 when they retire at 60. Some went on pension with up to 50, they took out a bus, and every case the bus driver was to blame.

    Railroad conductors do noT "DRIVE" the train. The train (ENGINE) is operated (driven_ by the ENGINEER in the UNited States. In the UK and perhaps elsewhere the operator is called the "driver". The Conductor is responsible for the paperwork, clearances, and operational details of a train, but the ENGINEER is the operaor who mans the brakes, throttle, speed, and other operational details. The Conductor can advise the Engineer that it is safe to depart, but the Engineer will not move the train unless he is satisfied that the train is ready in all respects .

    • @Ryanthusar
      @Ryanthusar 17 днів тому +9

      Poor design of the roads that go beside the tracks as well. Aka, poor city planning.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 16 днів тому +4

      Most of those crossings are very old, and are appropriate for regular cars and trucks at the design time, probably around 1950, and fitted them. The problem comes with longer trucks with reduced ground clearance, which causes them to self centre, and also lowered cars, which do the same. There is likely a warning there about the hump height, and the truck driver is totally to blame, because you can see on arriving at the crossing that the roadway is raised both sides, and thus that his low ground clearance vehicle is not going to fit. There likely are lots of other crossings along that road, and they likely also are recorded in the truck GPS as to both ground clearance and height for the rail crossing, so even a Swift driver driving where the voice tells them should not get centered there, providing they actually entered both length, height and ground clearance of the truck and trailers.
      Yes the level crossing could be redesigned, but doing that is either going to require relaying 10 miles of railway track either side to get the grade down, or destroying houses to get the extra length to move the roads either side, to get the section far enough away that you can have an approach and departure that will fit road grade limits, and make a crossing that is level to the rails, with an approach and departure that can fit a fully legal semi truck each side.
      So either the city or town pays out a few million per intersection, or the railway pays a hundred million for the line, or you put up a sign telling dumb people to not use it if the vehicle has low ground clearance, or if it is over 15 feet long between axles, and that no vehicles over 10 tons are permitted. You can bet the town will go with option 3, and let insurers fight over the claims, and for the railway insurance to win every time, as they have right of way, even if the signals do not work, as the rules of the road say that you must stop at every rail crossing, look for approaching trains both ways, and only cross if there are no trains approaching, and only to cross after the train has cleared, and there are no other trains using any other rails.

    As a rail fan, I'd like to point out to everyone that trains DO NOT stop like cars. Even if a train goes into emergency stop, it can sometimes take a minute or longer to stop it. While you can call the number on a sign next to the tracks to reach a dispatcher, you might be better off to call 911 (US) and let the cops call about oncoming trains. All these high centered trailers suggests several problems. One tractor trailers are too long with a too low center. Second the roads crossing the rails are NOT level on either side forcing the rails to be higher than the surrounding roads making high centered trailers a fact of life. Why not raise the road level near the rails to prevent this. It only needs to be near the level for approximately one tractor trailer length. Oh well. If this doesn't change we will continue to see trailers stuck crossing a rail and getting destroyed by trains.

A truck with a load will be sent with a fairly low trailer bed that has to cross a railroad track where the road is lowered on both sides, lower than what the bed of the trailer rides. It many times is not the driver's fault; he was just following the instructions he had been given; but the person who sent him on that journey, the truck dispatcher does not know that the track is higher than the bed of the trailer and so it happens again and again.

    Most car haulers the trailers are heavy and if they are not high enough for ground clearance, they will get stuck. Another factor is that if the rails are too high that too can stop a tractor trailer. If the tractor trailer is carrying a heavy load that is also a possibility, either way cars were damaged. If the rails are not maintained properly there you have it. I know for a fact someone out there will call me on it.

    It's absolutely absurd that after all these years, and all the destruction, the environmental costs, the loss of life, injury and the countless millions of dollars these rail crossing have caused because of tractor trailers bottoming out, that the road and rail levels have not been equalled over a greater distance to stop this from happening.

      @@stevemchadd Unfortunately the communities (taxpayers) who have to pay for the upgrades generally don't have the money or they would have already done it. And in general the taxpayer in a community would be funding an upgrade where the chances of a trucker going over that particular crossing and getting stuck at the exact moment a train comes through is tiny. Communities do the math and for the most part they decide the massive costs of upgrading each crossing in town where there might be a problem could be better spend improving roads and traffic signals or feeding homeless.

    Every one complains about "call the blue sign", "Calling the cops is better", "lower the hangover". I got a simpler solution: If you are unsure you wont make it, DON'T CROSS. All truck drivers should know how high their trailers can travel over a hump. If the hump looks bigger than what the trailer is allowed, DO NOT CROSS.

    If these trucks keep getting stuck by "bottoming" out on railway crossings, I would've thought that some enterprising trailer manufacturer would've designed a trailer rear axle suspension system much like the suspension on low rider cars. That way the driver could just lift the rear axle & drive clear.

    Why are "level" crossings not at road level in US ?
    It seems that regular maintenance of rails keeps raising the rails until the crossing must be abandoned (blocked) ?

    • @ItsJustLisa
      @ItsJustLisa 16 днів тому +2

      Most of them are decades old, and trailers and buses used to have higher axle to axle clearance. Unfortunately, many routes that these trucks have to take getting from point A to point B have to go over raised crossings like this because there aren’t other routes. One would think that as this became a problem, the railroads and highway/transportation departments would have done planned leveling to remove these humps, but the problem just gets “kicked down the road”, so to speak.
      Either the roads need to be regraded to reduce the severity of the “humps” or the tracks need to be dropped to road level with no mound. Neither is cheap, especially since many rail beds were created by adding material to the existing ground level and then building track on top rather than digging a rail bed in which to put base material, ties and rail track.

    • @frankrosenbaum3471

      In many instances, the roads were put in/improved long after the tracks. Why didn't they grade the road up to the crossing to make it level. It would be much easier to regrade the road, than the tracks.
