53% of adult Britons claim to belong to ‘no religion’ in the British Social Attitudes Survey. Of the 37% professing Christianity, a significant number are members of black-majority churches. The relative strength of Christianity in the black community, against the backdrop of steep secularisation in the population as a whole, means that much of UK churchgoing in 2023 is both prominently and recognisably black.

As particular religious practices increasingly threaten human rights (and induce heightened cultural sensitivities), he also questions the relatively low visibility of visible minorities in atheist assemblies and highlights the need for diverse viewpoints in our communities.
