My dad and I both had Jeep Cherokee XJs that had well over 300k and ran perfectly when we sold them. I bought mine for $800 in 2012 and drove it for about 5 years with the only issue was that it needed the crank position sensor needing to be replaced at about 250k. Great engine. Dad had a 4.7 V8 WJ with miles when we sold it. That thing was enjoyable to drive and despite being so high mileage was actually pretty reliable. The 4.7 will generally get the same or better MPG than the 4.0 because it has a five speed transmission. That transmission (the 545RFE) is actually a world more reliable than the transmission that comes behind the 4.0. 16-17 MPG average with the 4.7 PowerTech V8...using a calculator, not the overhead console readout. Just bought a project WJ with the V8 last month that I'm planning to fix up and use for work. You can get them dirt cheap and fix them dirt cheap (especially if you're a mechanic like me) and they will do virtually the same work as a pickup truck that costs 3x more! Great vehicles overall.
I see many of them on the road. Many are very worn in the paint, etc., but they’re still running. Change the oil on all motors regularly, and you’ll go down the road well.
I didn't watch the whole vid but I bought a brand new '91 Cherokee Laredo back in '91. I ordered her exactly the way I wanted her. Black, two door, no power locks, no power windows, full time transfer case and Aisin 4 speed auto. We had a 26 year 226,000 Mile relationship before I sold my baby. The 4.0 liter never hiccupped. It was solid. The whole drivetrain still functioned with no issues when I sold it. Started on the dime every time on original Fuel injectors too (think they were Bosch, but not sure). Engine-wise I just replaced the plugs and a few water pumps over its lifetime, and distributor cap and rotor. Mine was the distributor version. It was a sad day when they stopped making that straight 6, 4.0L high output engine !!😢😢😢😢
Scotty, when I put on a low restriction exhaust system on my Jeep the mileage went up to 18 average. The exhaust system is restrictive. That is 5 more miles per gallon. Good day fella too.

I clocked 180K miles / 300K km on a Wrangler TJ 2000 same I6 motor when sold after 18 years of ownership since new. The only failed part was the limited slip mechanism in the rear differential. At 160K miles changed brushes on the original alternator without even loosening the fixing bolts. The AC was still working. I thought that was normal for Jeeps.
my old mid 80's Cherokee was just a rolling garbage can full of mopar parts. traded it for a toyota p/u before they were called tacomas. best thing i ever did.
Neighbor had a six cylinder WJ version with just part time 4 wheel drive (power only to rear axle when transfer lever all the way forward) it got fairly good gas mileage unlike my V8 model that will transfer power to the front axle when the rear is spinning even with the transfer lever all the way forward
I've had a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 4x4 for a few years now, it had 192000 on it when I bought it for $3200. I put Amsoil in the engine, differentials, transmission, transfer case, brake fluid and power steering fluid. I also used the Amsoil engine flush when I made the change over from conventional motor oil. I also use the Amsoil fuel system additive. I used to get 13 mpg roughly. Since I made the change I regularly get 19 to 20 mpg. I also run it in All Wheel Drive year round. It has 207000 miles on it and runs like a top. Just an FYI for WJ owners.
My daily driver is a Patriot Blue Pearl rust free 2000 Jeep GC Laredo 2-wd 4.0 (WJ). I bought it 2 years ago with only 70k miles and it now has 88k. It runs like a top, rides and drives fantastic getting 17/23 mpg which isn't bad for a large, roomy SUV. Little modifications here and there like a 2" lift and adding Wrangler 5 spoke 17' wheels make it sit better and look sharp. These Jeeps have the very unique combination of being unibody construction with a solid front axle which can be problematic when lifted. I replaced all of the steering and front suspension components including the upper and lower control arms and track bar (adjustable) so the caster angle and center line would be correct after the lift was installed, which is a must. Next will be new coil springs and heavy-duty upper and lower ball joints for the added weight of the 17" wheels and big tires. Note: These engines need zinc (ZDDP) added to the oil due of the flat tappet lifters if you want them to run smooth and super quite like a sewing machine for many years.
After 8 years we had to have the wiring harness in the driver's door fixed yearly. And we had to replace the ignition coil several times. But those were the big issues. The rear tail light Assyria had to be replaced several times as well. But a good vehicle besides those issues.
I always thought this was one of the best mid-sized SUVs for its time. I had a relative who live outside of Boston and except for the rear hatch not staying up, everything worked and it was loaned to me during my winter stay with them since the family was using a new RAV4. I would be one of the few people driving during a snowstorm on the Highway on my way to the ski areas up north in NH. Too bad they are building a lot of Expensive CRAP nowadays.
Have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L I6 with 205,000 miles on it. ❤ it, reliable and a lot cheeper, even with yearly maintenance cost of an old vehicle, than the payment on anything new.
I've had 3 Rangers. Great dependable, easy to maintain. Just Don buy the Edge with the step side, a sheet of 4x8 plywood won't fit between the bedrooms! The straight side a sheet will slide in with the tail date! The clutch will wear out if you get stupid about towing heavy loads! Lots of parts stores use them to delivery trucks! Had one that had 328000 on it . Loaded it to a friend and it came back with a slipping clutch!
@@markmccarty9793 What size engine was in your Ranger? Mine has a Manual transmission. I don't tow with it. Bought it for camping and the good fuel Economy. It's a 94 with a few miles, still runs like a top👍
Yea, that 4 liter is a hoss, but it'll pull more than it can stop! I've had a 2.3, drove a 3litter, and a 2.5. The 2.5 is the way to go with a 5 speed! A good errands runner, take the trash off, take a disassembles engine to the machine shot, run errands. The extended cab will hold a week's Wirth on groceries ot slide 10-12 sheets of plywood over the tail gate! The early 2.3 got better gas milage, but the 2.5 had noticeably more torque! Ger an extended cab, you'll be surprised what will fit back there! Lot of auto supply stores still use them here.
Yep, an f150 with a 300 straight 6 will drag it backwards! I've had 2 Rangers. Great little delivery trucks. Mine had the 4 speed 300, put av5 speed in it! Picked up 4mpg and still pull the gates of Hell down, but it didn't have air-conditioning!
@@markmccarty9793 The 300 inline was an excellent engine. I had an inline six in my Mercury Capri. Bought with high miles, drove it for years. Sold it to a friend that ended up driving it for years lol.
My all-time favorite ride I wish I never sold (wasn't the 4.7HO, so I'm alright)... 2004 JGC. EPA estimates got me as a young man, I thought I was saving my a*s on gas... WRONG! Power to weight was atrocious. They lost money on every one of them. What a vehicle, even with the mileage.
WJ!!! Yes!!! I have 217,000 on mine and I am still breaking her in! I am getting another one during tax time! I don’t wanna drive a newer vehicle for a long time!
Great video, great to have confirmation about the ol 4.0 straight six ! I was just beat out of buying an older 2wd jeep Comanche with 4.0 inline 6cyl hate I missed that
I learned something. I was always under the impression that any GRAND Cherokee was trash. If you wanted a non-Wrangler Jeep, to look for an older Cherokee (not a Grand Cherokee) with the square grille and the straight-6 4.0.
Scotty, I bought one and ended up buying 3 motors for it. I gave up and gave it away. Good luck finding a good used 4.0. I tried for forever to find someone to rebuild one and no one would.
I dunno. I had a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5.9 liter engine (special edition, not many). In 2013 the engine caught fire while on a 5 mile local trip) and the vehicle was a total loss. Never buying another one.
Some of these cars have an "automatic climate control" that used a computer operated actuator motor to repeatedly push a blend door against its stops until the blend door or its axle separated or broke at low mileage, usually about or before the vehicle was two years old (most of the six cylinder cars had "manual" air conditioning and did better) the official fix involved tearing out the dashboard and I think moving the steering column to reach the evaporator and heater core box areas and the blend and recirculation doors areas to replace them with new parts that might just fail again although supposedly stronger than the originals-access to the heater core/blend doors/ac evaporator box is horrible in many newer cars- there is a jerryrig fix that involves cutting a hole or burning a hole with a small soldering pencil iron through plastic after taking the glove box out and accessing the blend door(s) through there and replacing with a metal heavy door and (I think I remember) a new heavy metal axle that accepts a hex screw to attach--it was called "HeaterTreater" and at the end you had aluminum duct tape that you used to seal back the pieces of plastic you cut open -since having done that I think best to keep the electric connector to the actuator motor unplugged until you want to change from cold to hot or vice versa--you take the glove box off again to do that) when part of the blend door fails you begin to get cold air out of some of the dash air registers and when the whole thing fails (there is actually a second blend door behind a partition with its own actuator) you get nothing but cold air no matter how high you turn the "temperature control" knobs out of all the dash air registers and even the heater floor outlets and defrost outlets
Prices super high, still see 100s of brand new vehicles in neighborhoods and on riads here in Nj. Work with guys paying close to $1,000 a montg for just their cars..
Right on glad to hear Scotty I hate paying for vehicle this while over priced 😅 I have Lexus IS250 2006 all-wheel drive I'm having an issue getting the starter out I use wobble extension the swivel ratchet got the bottom boat out but the top bolt that stripped trying to break it free with the breaker bar some PB blast 14 mm socket also used in the extractor socket I might have to get to another way besides releasing the motor mount and the subframe for the motor he'll have any options have you worked on one of these before can you help me out thanks Scotty
What year is this jeep, did I miss it? And what are the years to target? Never owned one…never heard much good about them, but after watching this, open to the idea as a cheap second vehicle. 🤷🏼♂️
Good info. Thanks, except you put up a photo of the wrong crazy person. T-RUMP is a poster child for 'crazy person'. ;) Keep up the good work, auto repair that is.
Sold one that is still running around. Original tranny, I6 engine, AC. At the twilight of the last real Jeeps. I would not touch anything past 2006 I learned the hard way. The new ones are Jeep in name only.
SCOTTY I HAVE A QUESTION THATS BEEN ON MY MIND SINCE 2004... I started watching NASCAR then and always saw commercials about a fuel additive called ZMAX. What's your thoughts on the product? Always wanted to buy it but I end up buying STP 5 in 1. We have a 2009 Toyota Corps and a 2016 Camary. Sorry I don't know where else to askthis. Thank you much love from Chicago! Love your videos. Would an application of ZMAX fuel treatment work? V thoughts Thank you
Hi @XTRABIG. I have used a turkey baster to change power steering fluid in a 2007 Ford Focus! Really great for non-invasive fluid renewal. Uses more fluid doing it this way but added cost was worth NOT breaking into system. Even made a spreadsheet to calculate my dilution of the old fluid to obtain 90% new fluid with multiple turkey baster drain and fills. Yay!
I think two people were kind to reply to my request about what year that Jeep might be. I received an email noting there's a reply but it did not go to the actual reply when I clicked on it. And, I can't seem to find my original post. So, thank you to those who did reply! Only UA-cam Logo Andrew Christiansen's name appeared. I appreciate it!
That knock on the poor gas mileage of the 4 L. Jeep engine in the Grand Cherokee is not necessarily true. I have a relative who had a GRAND CHEROKEE, made in the late 1990s, & we went to festival where there was bumper to bumper idling traffic for a long time. The needle showing gas barely moved! I couldn't believe it! This guy put 550 kilometers on that vehicle before the engine finally quit. NO major repairs. The BEST vehicle I've come across, much better than any of mine. A jewel. The thing I learned here was that this vehicle was actually a cross-over, meaning no steel chassis!,,, rather than a true SUV where the body is bolted onto rigid steel chassis. Didn't know Jeep was pulling something like that , especially on GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED ("Special") EDITION, during those many years ago.
Bought a 2008 JGCL 17 months ago. It only had 51K on it when I bought it. Its got the 3.7 V8. Its got 96 less cubic inches then my 68 Roadrunner but only 20 less HP. Boy that thing is zippy. The only thing that I replaced was the catalytic converter and that was still under warranty. I''ll be dead and buried by the time it reaches 100K.
Still no replacement for displacement.. the latter would out torque this newer crap we are subjected to now.. not always about hp.. look at heavy trucks engines.. only throw out 5-600 hp BUT almost a literal Ton of torque.
Hello Scott, I bought a 2006 Honda Accord coupe EX 2.4l 4 cylinder. I had 4 sensor problems. Oxygen upper and lower, coolant temperature sensor, I changed the coolant, new thermostat and both sensors, I'm still getting a check engine light. And I don't know what to do now please help, what's my next step. Thanks Scott.
All the Cherokees until the Daimler era used the AW4 trans. same as Toyota Tacoma. My friend with a Taco pointed it out and sure enough mine was the same as his.
Yep. I have a 2000 XJ with the 4.0L and 175K miles and it is smooth and quiet. It has the Aisin AW-4 tranny which is used on Toyotas and even some Lexus and Volvos use it. It's supposed to be as good a tranny as the 4.0L is for an engine. I get a little better gas mileage because the regular Cherokee (XJ) was lighter than the Grand Cherokee (WJ), so I get about 16 City and 22 Highway. Mine is a Daimler-Chrysler, the last and one of the best Jeeps made. I bought it because of the 4WD which I needed for the NY winters (I left for work at 4:00 AM and didn't want to get stuck with an overnight snowstorm). I have never gotten stuck in the snow with the 4WD in low - I can plow though just about anything. Scotty is right about the 4.0L straight-6 engine. It is one of the best, most reliable engines ever made and is easy to work on. There is plenty of room to reach everything. Some of the Grand Cherokees with a V-8 had the Chrysler Torqueflight tranny, another reliable transmission.
Im looking for a 2015 toyota hilux it comes in 2.7 gasoline or a 2.8 Turbo deisel. The deisel has alot more torque and a little better mile/gallon but costs more. I can buy either with about the same miles my question is which engine will last longer the 2.7 gasoline or the 2.8 turbo deisel
I had the smaller Cherokee with the 4l in-line 6. Lovely engine, the only one I ever saw in Ireland. Got up to 20 mpg, bought for 600 euro and sold it for a profit after 3 years.
@@davidgriffiths7696 they'll never be completely worthless as long as there are SUCKERS who will believe, fight, kill, work, pray and die for them.. 💵💵😄😄
13 miles a gallon, pre 2009, will be hard to find one without rust. With $3-4+ gasoline prices, it's dated. This Jeep might be one of the few models w/o quality problems that plagues so many others even more recent ones.
I bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee 4wd used in 2005. The transmission went out after 3 months at 42k miles. Then the water pump and then the radiator. All before 70k miles. Three of the the 4 power windows also failed. I will never touch a Jeep again. Worst auto I have ever owned.

In the UK i worked for Jeep in the mid 90's,they could really do the miles! They were nippy!!
Gotta watch the motor mount bushings
I have a 1990 Comanche with a 96 Cherokee drivetrain
Converted to 4X4
Sick man!! Awesome truck!
Have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L I6 with 205,000 miles on it. ❤ it, reliable and a lot cheeper, even with yearly maintenance cost of an old vehicle, than the payment on anything new.
The 4.0l was alright, just horrible on gas.
Sold mine, bought an older Ford Ranger with the all to familiar Lima four banger.
Lol 28mpg, not bad!
Entertainingly informative as usual.
My 98 Cherokee Sport gets 17 mpg in the city with the 4.0L inline six.
I have the 4.0L in my old Wrangler Rubicon. Change the oil, and it just keeps chugging along...
Bro is making me love old cars as a youngin
I still drive mine daily since 2016 (bought as first car)
At Toyota today. 2023 Highlander was $58k
I dunno. I had a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5.9 liter engine (special edition, not many). In 2013 the engine caught fire while on a 5 mile local trip) and the vehicle was a total loss. Never buying another one.
225 slant six chrysler and 300 six cylinder ford engine's lasted forever! Two of the best AMERICAN engine's ever built.
Some of these cars have an "automatic climate control" that used a computer operated actuator motor to repeatedly push a blend door against its stops until the blend door or its axle separated or broke at low mileage, usually about or before the vehicle was two years old (most of the six cylinder cars had "manual" air conditioning and did better) the official fix involved tearing out the dashboard and I think moving the steering column to reach the evaporator and heater core box areas and the blend and recirculation doors areas to replace them with new parts that might just fail again although supposedly stronger than the originals-access to the heater core/blend doors/ac evaporator box is horrible in many newer cars-
there is a jerryrig fix that involves cutting a hole or burning a hole with a small soldering pencil iron through plastic after taking the glove box out and accessing the blend door(s) through there and replacing with a metal heavy door and (I think I remember) a new heavy metal axle that accepts a hex screw to attach--it was called "HeaterTreater" and at the end you had aluminum duct tape that you used to seal back the pieces of plastic you cut open -since having done that I think best to keep the electric connector to the actuator motor unplugged until you want to change from cold to hot or vice versa--you take the glove box off again to do that)
when part of the blend door fails you begin to get cold air out of some of the dash air registers and when the whole thing fails (there is actually a second blend door behind a partition with its own actuator) you get nothing but cold air no matter how high you turn the "temperature control" knobs out of all the dash air registers and even the heater floor outlets and defrost outlets
Prices super high, still see 100s of brand new vehicles in neighborhoods and on riads here in Nj. Work with guys paying close to $1,000 a montg for just their cars..
They have Body on Frame chassis. Not just Unibody. They can do moderate off roading.
I thought you were talking about a Nissan Frontier!
The brake light and housing is considered abs
What year is this jeep, did I miss it?
And what are the years to target?
Never owned one…never heard much good about them, but after watching this, open to the idea as a cheap second vehicle. 🤷🏼♂️
What year Scotty?
Just bought one today for 3500. 120k miles. Hopefully everything turns out well
How long will the automatic transmission last?
Grand cherokees had kinda shitty trans (the exception being extremely early ones)
The cherokee xj with same motor and an AW4 trans is much better imo.
What year was it???
Agreed. Jeep died with 4.0.
V thoughts
Thank you
I like the jeeps from the early 2000s,.
Do they have a 3.0 crd model in u.s because they the ones to buy because they give good mpg and the diesel engine has 220 bhp.
Maybe I missed it…did Scotty ever mention the yr of this particular vehicle?
Had a 94' Cherokee and loved it. That inline 6 was a beast.
@harveyhankerson8359 had an 88 Comanche with a 7' bed. Hauled a ton of stone in it no problem, just had to watch the bumps.
Watched again... didn't see a year. What year is it?
what model scanner is that Autel and what model would you suggest for personal use and to use when shopping for used car ,truck
Hello Scottie, can you share your thoughts with me on my purchased a Lexus ES350, good or bad ¿?
Hi Scotty. I wonder if the brake fluid needs to be flushed after all those miles. Maybe the old fluid is kind of "sticky"?
Cheers, Chuck in Florida.
I used a turkey baster to change the brake fluid. it does get dirty. just be very careful not to get air in the system while doing it.
Only

Andrew Christiansen's name appeared. I appreciate it!
They made them with the 5.9 high out put V-8 . Not sure how they hold up .??
What year is that Jeep Grand Cherokee that he's reviewing?
What scan tool is Scotty using 🤔
Scotty, that is an excellent comparison of a Crazy Person!!!
I like quick 6 cylinder cars. 😊
Did I miss something or did he not mention the year of this Cherokee?
I'm guessing 2002-2004. My friend is selling his 2004 for a lot under $2900.
I drive less than 1000/yr so low gas mileage isn't a concern for me. Interesting type vehicle for me, cheap price because low MPG. Thanks
151k on 4.0,it's just now getting broken in.
Scotty saying something positive about a Jeep/Dodge/Ram product. It's a strange strange world.
727 torque flite is pretty much bullet proof.. ask any taxi company mechanic..from that Era ..
Did you move to R.I. ?? If so welcome, and are you doing repairs ?
Im looking for a 2015 toyota hilux it comes in 2.7 gasoline or a 2.8 Turbo deisel. The deisel has alot more torque and a little better mile/gallon but costs more. I can buy either with about the same miles my question is which engine will last longer the 2.7 gasoline or the 2.8 turbo deisel
Diesel will always outlast a gas counterpart.. Rev slower.. more rigidly built for longevity..
I liked your crazy person example.
There are people that go off-road crazy with them all the time
I didn't hear what year this particular jeep is.
I had a 93 grand Cherokee that was great but had a 2001 that thought me to never buy a jeep again!
What was the year?
I had the smaller Cherokee with the 4l in-line 6. Lovely engine, the only one I ever saw in Ireland. Got up to 20 mpg, bought for 600 euro and sold it for a profit after 3 years.
Nah.. You got more euros for it because they're worth less, just like the fiat dollars.. 💵💵💯💯😂😂

Hey Scotty, can one not just install a more modern fuel injection system and get better gas mileage?
I love the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's a great car for real car people.
What is a real car person?
@breadordecide yeah what is real car people
@@breadordecideI think he's referring to non-retards.
13 miles a gallon, pre 2009, will be hard to find one without rust. With $3-4+ gasoline prices, it's dated. This Jeep might be one of the few models w/o quality problems that plagues so many others even more recent ones.
@@emailuser8668 I'm still trying to find out what a real car person is
Cost of ownership..
Over the long term..
Paying for 14mpg, you will save lotsa money.
What year was this Jeep?
what year is this Jeep?
I just bought one a 2017 and I love it, It's got a hemi
These are unibody? Wow, I would’ve imagined they were BOF. I still like them though.
What year jeep is in this video?
Scotty is recommending Chrysler products now?
how many cars do you own, sir? just curious.
