Only started targeting Corbina this summer. I always saw them while surfing and never knew what they were. Been fishing my entire life, but only just recently got into surf fishing. Been killing it here in San Diego and the rush of seeing a bean, sight fishing it, ripping line and then landing it is the best rush. I thought nothing could be better than top water fishing for large mouth bass. I think getting beans comes close!!!!
Caught my first 20 in. corbina. Incredible fight. Pure explosive power. It made me a bit nervous about breaking my rod or my line. Super yummy too, not many bones!
I been doing sight fishing for Corbina for years. Yesterday I used a fat sandcrab and put it in front of his face multiple times and it was ignored. I think it was more cause the tide was rough and it got missed multiple times due to the sand and movement was very high. I switched to a long Berkley sand worm and BAM! I will share a secret with everyone. You always say find the structure find the fish. Well, I have one. Find the sandcrabs find the fish. Before you even begin fishing, get a net, dig it down into the shore waves and see what you find. If you find little to nothing move on. If you find big ones stay there as eventually they will come before the hole gets created from their feeding. So in a way you beat them to where they plan to feed. 80-90% of the time this has worked. Find the sand crabs find the fish.
Would really love to know what beach you’re fishing. It’s been hard to find a good SoCal surf fishing beach without a lot of people or surfers. Love your content btw!
Hey Ashley thanks for the comment and watching the video. Tbh, I don’t know of any beaches where u can avoid the crowds during summer. The best bet is to fish first thing at grey light until around 9 or 10 am or during the week, which I know is not an option for many. I don’t disclose locations but shoot me an email and maybe I can point you in the right direction 🤙
Have you read Corbina Diaries? Its written by a fly fisherman, Al Q. Check out the chapter Corbina University, which any fisherman would find useful. Tight lines, Benjie!
Based on your comments, you already have the right idea. It’s a fine line between making the right cast and spooking em. And sometimes u can do it all perfectly and they still won’t bite. Tight lines brotha!
Amazing video as always Benjie c: sorry for the first corbina you lost, but I'm sure as you mentioned, that second 15-minute fight made up for it haha. When you released the second one you said it would take a minute to revive them, is there a specific way you prefer to do or just lowkey cradle them in the water until they're good and ready to return to the waves?
Thanks brotha, appreciate the positive vibes man. With releasing, have one had under the fish and hold the tail with the other hand and push and pull em gently thru the incoming to allow water thru their gills. Tight lines my man!
I do. Haven’t used them as much the past couple months but I do have several that I enjoy using. Most of my halibut and White Sea bass videos were made with me using a bait caster. Been using the daiwa saltist the past couple months but I still use them regularly.
Corvina aka Vampire is actually on my bucket list and from what I've been told, jerk baits are the way to go for those guys. This one is a Corbina and they are pretty difficult to get on artificials (outside of proficient fly fishermen). Sand Crabs, ghost shrimp, and mussel are the way to go with these guys.
Both are good places. Huntington has good Perch and Corbina but people will make you leave as they don't care for the fisherman. Newport is very hit and miss. Jettys are better overall. You will find all kinds of fish there especially by rocks and structure.
I am an avid fly fisherman and absolutely love the chase on fly. I travel many miles along the coast walking and watching in my area. It’s really fun. I just recently started using a spinner but I still use my flies on my spinner too. Just personal preference but it really is entertaining for sure!
Hi David, with Corbina on light line, I don't like to high stick during the fight because I feel that the chances of breaking off is higher. I feel like I get plenty of leverage and pressure with the rod lowered and at an angle without risking a break off. But it's just how I like to do it and what's worked for me.
I like your video but you need give more information... like you catch a fish and measure it but amd say OH guys this is almost legal but never state what the legal size for that species of fish... for new anglers this would be prime information to be had and learn imo. But you're killing it with them luck crafts
This is great feedback for me thank you. Your example is a good one and a reminder for me to include information for the newcomer. I will work on that for future videos, much appreciated.
@@BenjieKimFishing awesome... I myself just started surf fishing coming from fresh water stuff, so it's good info to be had... and may location... but I know a lot of UA-camrs don't like to disclose their spots... I've been working my way down the coast from Long Beach southward... haven't found those beaches in your vids yet.

Agreed man, there’s something truly special about sight fishing a bean!
Great video. The details about reading water are not boring they are very important. The water clarity seemed to really changed during the video.
Thanks Ron! Yea the tide turned quite a bit and the incoming caused the water to become quite muddy. 🤙

Wow huge congrats and thank you so much for sharing!
Cool video buddy!! Nice big fish!! It's hard to believe you pull those in with that 4lb line!! You obviously know what you are doing!!
Thanks Derick! Sometimes I feel like I know, other times I’m humbled...but that’s how we grow in all things in life! 🤙
LOVE IT,CATCH MANY ON 4 LB TEST, LIGHT LINE ALL THE WAY!
Agreed bro, they can be caught on long rods but imo light line is the best way to get them! So much fun!
Love watching your videos if I ever make it out to your part of the world I will need to try the surf
Thanks for the positive vibes and def hit the surf if u make it out here. Where do you live?
Benjie Kim Fishing I live in Atlanta Georgia but I grew up on the gulf coast
Xlnt video - full of anticipation. Great fight and landing.
Thank you so much for watching and the positive stoke. Much appreciated! 🤙
Another siiick video Benjie. Always so informative. Dope that you catch them beans on 4lb test. That’s my trout line. 😂🤙🏽
Is this victor?
David Paras me?
Much love Jimmy, we gotta get you on a bean one of these days man. That is, if we can get you to put the LC away 🤣!
Benjie Kim Fishing I know right! 😂
So informative Your videos never fail to teach Sorry for the lost Bean!
Thank you Kate! I was being so dramatic. There will be a lot more lost beans in the future 😂
Nice work brotha!
Thank you brad, I appreciate your support brotha! 🤙
Great video
Appreciate the encouragement, thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom, that’s some great advice and a strategy that makes a lot of sense!

I haven't read it but I've met Al on the sand once. Definitely a legend and pioneer of the corbina insanity. I'll have to check it out one day!
I FLY LINE A LOT AS WELL
Your vids are so sick! Help so much with targeting these things!
Thanks so much Bryan I appreciate the positive stoke. Would love to hear how you're doing out there with these guys. So much fun!
Benjie Kim Fishing i had a few good days after watching some of your older vids! But those things love to swerve me haha
Especially the skinny water tailers... i just need to get better shots on them without spooking.

Benjie Kim Fishing sounds good, learning something new everyday :) thanks for passing on the knowledge!
Do you ever use baitcasters
I do. Haven’t used them as much the past couple months but I do have several that I enjoy using. Most of my halibut and White Sea bass videos were made with me using a bait caster. Been using the daiwa saltist the past couple months but I still use them regularly.
What plastics do you guys recommend for corvina?

@@BenjieKimFishing oh ok yea I didn’t know the difference, thanks
Beans? corBEANa, corbina. That’s cleaver. I haven’t heard that nickname yet but I’m gonna borrow it. Tight lines 🎣
What size plastic tubes are you storing your LC's in?
I’m not sure of the size but I get these tubes from Michaels. They fit perfectly. 🤙
Are you in Newport or Huntington Beach?
Both are good places. Huntington has good Perch and Corbina but people will make you leave as they don't care for the fisherman. Newport is very hit and miss. Jettys are better overall. You will find all kinds of fish there especially by rocks and structure.
Neither, but both of those beaches can be great!
They remind me of redfish looks like great fun with a fly rod
Yes sir, hunting em on the fly is prolly the most authentic way to get em. Just not my style as of yet!

Why rod tip low during fight?
Hi David, with Corbina on light line, I don't like to high stick during the fight because I feel that the chances of breaking off is higher.
