Steph, you just empowered a lot of women! Oil is a vehicle's lifeblood, so maintaining the proper level and regular changes are two of the most important things one can do for their vehicle. This is a quick, easy, affordable maintenance procedure that anyone can perform. Five tips: 1) Crack or remove the oil fill cap before removing the oil drip pan plug. This allows the oil to drain faster and more completely. 2) Keep constant inward pressure on the oil drip pan plug until you feel that it's completely unthreaded from the pan. Then remove it in one smooth motion up and away from the stream of draining oil. This greatly minimizes drips and messes. 3) Apply a thin film of clean oil to all rings and gaskets after inspection/replacement. This ensures the best possible seal, minimizing leaks and extending the life of rings, gaskets, etc. Simply dip a gloved finger into a fresh bottle of oil and coat the rings, gaskets, etc. 4) Be sure to use the right and best oil for your vehicle. Full synthetics or synthetic blends are best. And, while they're more expensive up-front, they save you money in the long run through less frequent oil changes and better lubrication performance. Also, be sure to choose high-mileage blends for vehicles with over 75,000 miles on the odometer. 5) If possible, check the oil level after the vehicle's engine has reached normal operating temperature. Turn off the engine and wait a couple of minutes to allow oil in the top of the engine to drain down into the drip pan. Remove the dip stick. Wipe it clean and reinsert it. Remove the dip stick again and note the oil level to ensure that the proper amount of oil is in the engine. I hope that someone finds these tips helpful in performing their own oil changes. Lastly, pre
The debate about oil changes and Sprinter Vans is huge on line. On our December 2016 model, the manufacturer says 20,000 miles but lots of folks say less. Our mechanic recommended 10,000. Another says 5K. Irrespective, I assume it should be done at 2 years. Any thoughts?
Basically, no. I don't have any thoughts about that. We change ours every 15ish thousand miles. No more frequent than 10,000. No longer than 20,000. ...But those numbers aren't based on anything other than our own speculation and 'best guess' as there is a severe lack of ACTUAL data out there. We drive more than 20,000 per year, so we would never hit the 2 year mark, but I'd personally get nervous to wait two full years between changes. Changing the oil gives us a good reason to get a closer look at the 'inside' of the engine (look for metal shavings, coolant or fuel in the oil, condensation, abnormalities, etc..). For that reason, we would give it an annual oil change in the event of not putting many miles on it. Short story: We would recommend anywhere from 10k to 20k miles with a maximum time interval of 1 year BUT that's not based on anything other than speculation and a 'best educated guess'
So impressed with your explanation. There is no reason women should not feel comfortable doing this and you have empowered many inexperienced human of all types! I think John's tips are spot on. I just bought a sprinter 4 months used, about to pick it up. Personally I don't trust STP oil filters and I'd get a better brand, possibly from Benz I have no experience in this yet, but I don't trust cheaper brands (apologies to Richard Petty and my childhood where we coveted getting an STP oval sticker to put on anything!). The other thing this video showed me is that this may be the easiest most accessible motor I've ever owned! The drain plug is accessible and easy to reach, and the oil filter is vertical with the opening on the BOTTOM not the top (so it should mostly be already drained out) plus it has walls like a cup to hold any little bit of oil residue as you remove it. Amazing if it is as it appears!
Thank you! We we’re thinking of taking our Sprinter Van to the shop to get the oil changed. Now after watching this video it has given us confidence to do this ourselves today! Thank you
I knew you were good at this, but watching how careful you are when taking out and putting in caps/filters around dirty engine parts really caught my eye. I'm impressed! Great tutorial!
Great video. I changed the filter on my 2016 Sprinter. My experience - Before you remove the large O ring be sure to note its exact location as you will need to place the new one at the (exact) same place which is not where you might think if you are used to changing O rings on car filters.
Good video, but the way the o-ring is shown going on at about the 3:15 mark is wrong and will cause you BIG problems (learned this the hard way.) It needs to go in the groove about 1/4” below the cap, not right up against the cap as shown. This will pinch the o-ring under the cap, and the leak won’t start until you get down the road. And it pumps out ALOT of oil when it does, enough to drain all of the oil in a few miles if you don’t catch it (luckily I did, but it was a huge nasty mess.)

hi there great video but you might want to put a torque wrench on the filter housing as there will be a specific torque setting which is usually Stamped on top of the housing. Same for the sump plug. Good job though👍
We used to do it like that too then did some research into it (actual studies, not just random car and driver articles) and could find no conclusive evidence that draining while hot was better than draining while cool, but yeah, you do you.
Adventure in a Backpack with today's synthetic oils this doesn't surprise me, they hold a lot more in suspension and every engine consistent run with synthetic oil changed on a regular basis that I have looked inside has looked brand new, unlike older vehicles with regular oil that would become varnished and sludged up if very regular oil changes weren't performed.
Elena C Service A is a minor service - oil/filter change plus a few other things. Service B is usually a more major. The types come up on your dashboard when the service is due - it will tell you what type to book in for (or do yourself according to the manual)
Something doesn't look right when you're replacing the small O ring on the oil filter cap. My 08 has a groove where it sits. Make sure there isn't an old crushed one hiding in the groove. Ok, I can see the old one is still in groove. Next oil change, remove both with razor blade.
You are correct, James. Large O-ring is not up against the flange, but rather in the groove almost a quarter inch from the flange. And the small O-ring is not to be placed on the 4 vane part of the shaft, but in a space between the two raised rings near the tip of the plastic shaft.
We change it when we have a good garage to work out of anywhere in the 10k to 20k mile range. That's just us though. It's a pretty highly debated subject with not much data to back up the claims. It will apparently drain faster if the engine is hot, but we prefer working on a cool engine and simply being patient on letting the oil drain out.

I drain the oil hot so any contaminants are still suspended, if you let it sit anything that was suspended will settle and contaminate your fresh oil.
We used to do it like that too then did some research into it (actual studies, not just random car and driver articles) and could find no conclusive evidence that draining while hot was better than draining while cool, but yeah, you do you.
Adventure in a Backpack with today's synthetic oils this doesn't surprise me, they hold a lot more in suspension and every engine consistent run with synthetic oil changed on a regular basis that I have looked inside has looked brand new, unlike older vehicles with regular oil that would become varnished and sludged up if very regular oil changes weren't performed.
great video but a bit quick on the dipstick read
Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking how to read the dipstick?
What's that Service A setting you referred to?
Elena C Service A is a minor service - oil/filter change plus a few other things. Service B is usually a more major. The types come up on your dashboard when the service is due - it will tell you what type to book in for (or do yourself according to the manual)
Easier said than done if a truck service center had changed it previously. Oil filter cap is a B____ to remove.
Something doesn't look right when you're replacing the small O ring on the oil filter cap. My 08 has a groove where it sits. Make sure there isn't an old crushed one hiding in the groove. Ok, I can see the old one is still in groove. Next oil change, remove both with razor blade.
Does the Mercedes 2011 bluetec diesel engine take regular oil as gasoline car?
@@HenryLisaPlaces Use Mobil 1 ESP full synthetic 5-30. or 5-40 depending on your climate. MB recommends that it must say 229.52 approved.
You are correct, James. Large O-ring is not up against the flange, but rather in the groove almost a quarter inch from the flange. And the small O-ring is not to be placed on the 4 vane part of the shaft, but in a space between the two raised rings near the tip of the plastic shaft.
How often do u change the oil?
We change it when we have a good garage to work out of anywhere in the 10k to 20k mile range. That's just us though. It's a pretty highly debated subject with not much data to back up the claims. Some mercedes literature says 10k. Other literature says 20k... so it's not very clear. We figure we'll just split the difference.

@@EXPLORISTlife
10,000 miles is what the book says on the 2008 model as the one you have.
@@EXPLORISTlife Usually oil & filter changed every 10k for higher milage Sprinters. My 2010 Sprinter has 200k on the clock. Oil and filter changed at 10K now , previously 15k.
Fuel / Air / Pollen changed at 20K.
Cant beat CLEAN engine oil - for smoother running too !
Great channel by the way .... Much Love from U.K. 💖
You guys would love 2022 sprinter diesel… it doesn’t have a dipstick, and you have to rely on the digital readout on the dash per the computer! It’s the biggest bunch of BS I’ve ever seen in my life. 😂
🤣😂
I was happy to see you didn't have to be a contortionist with your body and arms along with 13 dozen swivels & extensions just to get to the filter!
Are you changing the oil on a 4 cylinder engine or do you have the V6? I'm not sure if the process is the same for the two different types of engines - I heard that the procedure may be different.
This is a 6 cylinder.
Looks like you need to respray the headlights with clear coat.
Why Would You Use A CHEAP STP FILTER ? Why Not A WIX Or NAPA GOLD FILTER ?
Feel free to use whatever one you like because the process is the same. We don't geek out over the micro-details like filter brand. They are all plenty adequate.
All oil filters are not created equal. That STP is about the worst filter you could use. There is a video on UA-cam where another sprinter owner experienced leaks after installing a stp filter.

@@EXPLORISTlife ...until your cheap paper filter comes apart and grenades your engine. You guys should look into it
are the gloves optional ?
bahaha, im only pulling your timing belt!
Hey! got time for a quick joke?
Cool , wanna hear another ?
haha. your kids must LOVE your jokes
@@surfmarko he knows what's up.
Dont forget air and cabin filters
Those are covered in their own videos. This video is only about the oil change as you can tell in the title.
R.I.P nice concrete driveway :)
Dry oil absorb and a dawn/water mixture will clean up any messes made.
@@EXPLORISTlife hopefully. Best of luck. See you out there.
Feel free to put a tarp down or something if you're messy. It's up to each individual person how they nit pick the details of this project, but driveway cleanup is out of the scope of this particular video.
Good stuff.
Peace of Lord Jesus upon you and yours
David Almeroth peace of lord Jesus?
Not bad, didnt find any bad joke to make
