      It truly is. We are entering our second year of homeschool. I withdrew my child from public school and we are starting second grade. We use workbooks now, but I'm exploring the idea of curricula because I feel that a guided structure may aide in my teaching and his comprehension. This is all still very new to me and your videos help tremendously because you explain the style of various curricula. I'm a single mom who does not have a lot of means for trial and error (buying expensive materials that may not work, lol). Your videos give insight that helps me narrow down a selection that may be better suited for our individual styles.

    We are using Math Mammoth this year as well - I find it to be a really nice combo of Singapore theory and traditional drills.

      Project Happy Home That is what is appealing to me about the program as well. It’s got a bit of both. Have you used MM for long or just starting with it?

      Just starting this year, but I really like its simplicity and ease of use. My kiddos seem to like it som far as well. Fingers crossed!

    I was planning to do Saxon Math and got the curriculum but just before the beginning of this school year, we decided not to do it. I find it very long and confusing for my kids. I need my kids to master what they are learning in Math. We are doing a combination of different curriculums including Mathematical reasoning but we will still wait and see. Thank you for the wonderful reviews and I am very happy to see you back!

      It was a last minute switch-up for us too. Mastery is important and helps boost math confidence rather than moving on too quickly. It's great that you've found some curriculums that work for your kids. Thanks for watching!

    Two years later.., are you still loving Math Mammoth?
    How teacher intensive is it? I have 6 kids and don’t have a lot of time to spend one on one?
    Would love a video on CC. I have always been interested but don’t know enough about it..

      Hi, and thank you for watching. Math Mammoth can lean toward teacher-heavy but there are videos that have helped me also. We used MM this past year and felt that it patched up a lot of gaps for our daughter. We won't be using it any longer as we finished up the last level. We enjoyed using it but I probably wouldn't have used it for more than 2 kids at a time. I appreciate you watching!

      Marianne Reed we enjoyed the RSM games! There are so many games included that we didn’t get around to playing most of them but it was quite useful.

    Hi. I’m new to your channel. I found you from asking UA-cam for reviews for Math Mammoth. I see that it’s been a whole year since you posted this so I’d like to know how it went? Did you stick with it? Problems, criticism, surprises? How did it go for your daughter?
    I’m homeschooling my daughters, ages 10 and 8, just finished grades 4 and 2, and while my younger daughter has done very well with the Math we were using, my older daughter is struggling a lot. It was a spiral system so I’m basically going to just compare different mastery programs and see how it goes.
    Thanks, Bev

      So honestly- we switched our math this year (she used MM for one year only). We are back to Saxon- but not because we love it so much. It just happens to be working. I'll try to post a video on this soon. Thank you!

    I like math mammoth but I think I would try the already printed books. I forgot about them. For my 5th grader whom sometimes needs remedial because he is HFA, I am using MCP math.

    Greatly appreciate your thoughts.. I am in the process of trying to figure out what Math..for my sweet girl dealing w/ HF..ASD.. Seriously on the verge of taking the plunge w/ Shiller Math & combining it w/ Math Mammoth..since we already have MM.. Thank you for sharing.. (= PS: Was really considering RightStart, but I've heard that it jumps around a lot, and that would confuse my child so much..

      No problem- I'm glad to share what is working for us. Math is such a tricky subject to get just right, isn't it? RSM was a dream for us, but I didn't invest when I realized all I really REALLY wanted were the games- lol! MM works well for filling in gaps so that may work out quite well with Shiller (although I don't confess to know much about Shiller). I hope you find the right combination for your sweet girl.

    Hi, how many weeks do you homeschool? Do you feel like your children get enough social time?

    • @momzestlife
      @momzestlife  6 років тому +1

      Kimberly Dodge our weeks are about the same as most school districts - August through May. The beauty of homeschooling, though, is that you don’t have to follow a particular schedule. As for social, they both get plenty through extracurriculars. My oldest is in a leadership role at our church youth group, and plays in the band. They have parties at friends’ houses regularly, teen hangouts, all sorts of events. My youngest is involved in dance, music, awana, church and CC and we have plenty of park play groups in the Bay Area to get involved with if we had the time- and we don’t - lol! Too much to do here.😀

    Do you find math mammoth a little unorganized? I like the program, however, there are some flaws in it. For one, she doesn't explain how to do word problems, or what any of the terms mean. I also find some of the work to be a bit scattered. What do you think? Even though there's a review page in book 2 i think there needs to be more page for clarity before moving on to the next topic.

    • @momzestlife
      @momzestlife  6 років тому +1

      Hi Denise- thank you for watching and for your comment. I agree that MM is not a perfect program (I haven't found one yet), but so far since school has begun this year we have found it to be an upgrade from our last program. We have found Maria's YT videos extremely helpful in explaining some concepts, and we do pair it up with other math exercises and games to make it more complete for us. Here is a video link on her explaining word problems (have you checked out her channel?)ua-cam.com/users/MathMammothsearch?query=word+problems
      She also provides a whole series of review books that can be used to accompany the main curriculum if extra review is needed but we've found the online games she suggests to be helpful. I don't see that her approach is scattered- but it is definitely unique and she introduces topics independently and builds from there. For example, in 5A she introduces decimals before fractions (she explains why), but this is not the norm. But once you hop back into decimals after the fractions lessons it makes more sense. One thing I am beginning to do for review, though, is combining lessons - skimming over those topics my daughter might already be familiar with - and using them as review as we hit new topics. I'm finding that it doesn't work for us to do one lesson per day. Sometimes we stay longer on a lesson because there is so much introduced on one page, and other days we skip through a few. I know this was a SUPER long answer- lol! In short, I'm tweaking this program...but it is working and my daughter has learned so much more in mental math and problem solving than she has in her last two programs. :-)

      MomZest You know what I forgotten all about her youtube videos lol. I'm on 1A right now so when we were at sums with 5 and 6 i took that whole to just review what adds up to five and six, and so on and so forth. My daughter loves the card games. It helps her learn so much faster. Do you have a child in the first grade? Maybe we could bounce ideas off of each other, with curriculum ideas or teaching strategies etc.

      Denise Johnson Yes, Maria should definitely promote her channel more. It's a hidden gem. My kids are getting older - 5th and 11th, but I have so many fond memories of 1st grade. I do have some videos of our family when my Zoe was in first grade ...WAAAY back in my archives :-) Here is a play list I created with a few of them (this is the 1st and 2nd grade): ua-cam.com/play/PLILvWy6Ztcus3lmYaDh2GTYtjKdL80VWJ.html&disable_polymer=true And the Pre-K: ua-cam.com/video/c-3glhEPXLs/v-deo.html

      Denise Johnson hi there! I am just finishing MM 1B, and I have found that some of the concepts I didn’t understand why were introduced I 1A are coming into play now, and it’s all falling into place! It truly is a great math program! And I agree, go see Maria’s videos of 1st grade, they clarify a lot!
      As far as supplementing, I do not see a need to, but if you enjoy extra math games then by all means ;)
