Spreading Lime to Raise the PH of our Food Plots

  • We're back to working on our food plots after we were unsuccessful with the buckwheat this summer. We're going to plant winter wheat again for the fall, but we want to give the ground some nutrients, more so for the spring when we put in our cover crop.
It hasn't rained in quite some time and the ground is super hard and dry. Our plan was to break it up before putting down the lime, but we quickly switched gears after realizing we don't have the proper equipment for these conditions and honestly, it's not necessary right now.
Thanks for following along as we fumble through all of this and learn together!

Hi Devon and Ryan, hope that the PH soaks into the soil with it being so dry. Once you get some rain hopefully the soil will loosen up a little. That made for some good video footage with Ryan riding on the back for some extra weight. Wishing you the best with more success with your Food Plots this year.

It’s always something out in the fields. I agree with your liming first. Then (it will rain again lol) when you see 3-4 days of rain in front of you get that seed on the ground. Good work guys and good luck with your fall plots!

Thanks! Do you think we let it rain on the lime, then seed it before the next rain?

      @creekriseoutdoors Рік тому +1

@@OurNewLand the lime will take a while to break down, even pelatized lime, so don’t try and time seed planting to it. It doesn’t amend the soil quickly. You’ve got some lime down, that’s great and that will help you for 2-3 years (I like to lime every 3-4 years based oj soil samples). So, just focus your seed on the rain ahead and get it out once you see a wet pattern. Good luck!

      Ah, thanks Tammy!
I'm sending in soil samples today to see if the lime and nutrients we added helped. We will be planting clover and chicory in the front plot, and then a blend of beans, peas, hemp, radish, rapeseed, sunflowers and buckwheat in the other two plots (one of which is a new plot). We are excited for what the future holds for us on these plots!

I've got a small chisel plow attachment for my tractor that would be perfect for that. Nice to see you both. Hope you get some rain. We had a dry winter here.

That would certainly help! I just ordered two S tines to attach to our silly disc plow. I'm hopeful that will help dig into the ground a bit. We've been getting rain the last few days (finally!!!), so that should help. I hope you're doing well, buddy!

Thanks for watching! We loads of rain, finally. The food plots are looking great, mainly from the winter wheat. We can see that the clover is blanketing the areas where we planted it, but the individual clovers are still very tiny. My chestnut seeds should be here soon, and I have you to thank for inspiring me to try to grow trees from seeds! Thanks again!

Hey there, Sadie! We're trying to improve the soil on the food plots, but it's been a tough summer with the drought and high temps. We're finally getting rain this week, and I've ordered some S tines to attach to the rinky dink disc plow. Hopefully that will help break up the soil a bit. Thanks for watching!

A lot of work, but well worth it. Maybe add leaves & clean straw, to build humus to hold moisture and increase the soil quality. A winter top crop will help.

Hi Devon and Ryan, hope all is well as you haven't had new video in awhile. Congratulations Devon on the 102,000 views on your video about how your Adoptive parents and family reacted to you meeting your Birth family.

Hey there, Ben! Thank you for thinking of us. We're both doing great, and have been getting quite a bit of work done at the property. I (Devon, older brother) worked there four days last week, mainly on several of the deer food plots and making good progress on our rainwater collection system. We get so much more work done when we're not having to think about setting up cameras, but even that isn't a good excuse. I did actually record a few minutes of building the platform for our water storage tanks, but I'm not sure if it will even be used.
On the adoption videos, that silence is all on me. The 6 videos we have planned are all dependent on me, and I've really dropped the ball on it. I will get goin again soon, though! I hope to put out a video in the next two weeks that will discuss our goals for the coming months, concerning the property and the adoption videos.
Ryan and I will be spending this weekend with our sister's husband at their property.
We very appreciate your support and all of your kind words on our previous videos. Thank you so much!
