Same I read the novel alongside the anime and I have so much to say about all this but I love this series and I'll be holding off on reading until April. This isnt really a split cour since the end of the conversation was the end of the arc and everything after is the start of a new arc.

The problem is not this. what Kobato is trying to say; she only did this not because it was a defense for herself; she just wanted revenge. Osanai is a genius; there are other ways to protect herself she wants just to satisfy her ego.
3:51 Her ego is so high that she doesn't even think she did something wrong. Kobato just slapped her in the face for his words. I love this reaction from her.
    4:22
God, she is so insufferable. How can even you compare what he did to what you did?
    6:53
It's interesting that Kobato's character in the past was basically the typical arrogant genius who he thinks is the smartest guy in the room while looking down on everyone. Kobato's character was the same in high school; he only kept that's part hidden in his personality. How can you even be friends with someone of that personality?. I think Kobato was able to form this friendship with Osanai because she was genius; he valued her intelligence, so he considers her his equal. The second person is Kengo, but we don't know why Kobato considered him his equal.
    17:07
This is the kid that appears in episode 5. Urino, poor kid, what's he getting himself into? I will only pray for him.

I assume the girl that asked Kobato out wants his help with some mystery. And no way Osanai doesn’t remember the redhead. I dunno what plot she’s hatching. To be fair, I think Miyoshi wants to get close to Osanai because he knows she was part of the kidnapping case, and he wants that scoop.
19:50 It seems like Osanai was already planning to break things off with Kobato, she just needed his help to destroy Isawa first.
Also what is up with the burning van?!
Kobato and Osanai are just so interesting. And the show constantly looks beautiful, too. I need the next part sooner rather than later.

First of all I must really say that whether we got a season 2 or not I love the development of this entire drug case arc from the revelations to its conclusions. I will also say that Im glad the anime didnt try to stray away from the light novel to slap on a happy ending for our beloved duo and stayed faithful to what Ive read up to this point at least in the light novel. This is going to be a bit long but if people read it thank you.
While most of the fandom is dismayed with this breakup it was inevitable and its necessary for their development. That doesnt mean that I dont ship them or adore their friendship but I do think that what Osanai did is toxic even if she had her reasons and I understand and agree to an extent with Jogoro's perspective. The light novel does spell it out even more that what drove her to do this was fear. The fear of being tortured by Isawa and being permanently scarred and living with those scars. While that is perfectly reasonable she did worry her mother and put Jogoro and Kengo in danger.
Jogoro's response connects to his own self-righteous perspective (if thats the right word). He believes that the truth must always be exposed and Osanai as she said in episode 3 wants to preserve what she has at all cost. For Jogoro and Osanai they both believe themselves to be fox and wolf but as Osanai says that is a lie and even them trying to be ordinary is a lie. In the light novel Osanai even calls Jogoro out saying that if he was a fox he would have seen right through her and understood that her motivation was fear and wouldnt have been fooled and used by her but the same goes for her as she does say in the anime that she wouldnt have been figured out at all if she really was the wolf she thinks herself as. I like that to a certain extent we mostly cut Jogoro's thoughts. In his mind, he reaches the same conclusion that Osanai does that if they are neither ordinary or clever all they have left is arrogance. This episode really does a great job visually to represent all that with the mannequins and Jogoro's flashback.
The breakup - While it is devastating that their relationship has ended for now it is not due to malicious feelings towards each other but because their relationship has lost functionality and the anime makes that quite clear. As we all know Jogoro and Osanai were together so they could become ordinary but from the start of the series till now none of them have ever genuinely tried to hold themselves back which I always found odd personally but Im glad this is addressed. In the anime, Osanai and Jogoro admit that they found themselves too comfortable in each others presence. Osanai in the light novel further admits that she's sure that Jogoro went along with the sweets tour with some sort of expectation that she had something planned to which Jogoro admits to being true and even said that he would come up with mysteries when she was around even when there wasnt one classic example the Charlottes. Osanai actually suggests that they could stay together and try to be ordinary and if all fails they could live in arrogance as a secret between the two of them but thats not what they desire. Osanai states that she has come to trust in Jogoro as much as he has come to understand in her and sees Jogoro as similar to her - unable to be empathetic. Jogoro after Osanai leaves wonders if he will ever find Osanai to be a necessary existence in his life and found it unfair that in the end she decided to be truthful to him that she had found her time with him fun. Jogoro as a character while I do believe that he cares for Osanai he desperately wants to hold on to a functional relationship with Osanai and therefore chooses not to express sadness over their breakup or reciprocate her feelings and therefore holds himself back from saying it was fun too.
The aftermath of all this is told from Jogoro's perspective but is masterfully shown without dialogue in the anime. Jogoro becomes unable to finish the parfait and even a poster of it and sweets in general causes the memories of that summer to return which results in nausea. Kengo stops hiding his relationship. Jogoro is now dating Nakamura and Osanai is now dating Urino the first year that was absent in the mustard case who wants to do an article on what happened with the drug case. I havent read past this point but I think the burning truck is visual symbolism for Osanai and Jogoro or it could be a tease for whats to come. Again, this anime is just S tier stuff with the music and visuals it adds. Sorry this was so long but I had alot to say lol.

I really loved this show, I was a bit worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations, since I am a huge fan of Hyouka and was worried about comparing this show to that show. And a few decisions in the middle asked some good faith from me, but it all came together in the end.
I will say this, I was happy with myself that I was able to predict the ending, I knew they were going to "break up" and I'm going to guess that at some point circumstances will lead them to getting back together.
My reasoning why was because of my familiarity with the author's other work.
At the end of the Film Arc, Oreki has a similar reaction to being betrayed and used by Irisu, and has to be dug out of his hole from being used. This was even worse as in Hyouka Oreki knew Irisu for quite a short time, didn't have a very deep connection to her, and her using him was very minor
In this case, Despite how unhealthy their current relationship is, Kobato and Osanai have a kindred understanding of each other that they don't get from anyone else, have had a much longer time to form a bond, and what Osanai did to Kobato, even if you argue she was desperate, was much worse.
This is like if Oreki had been backstabbed by Chitanda, so its not wonder they are separating.
Also the staff definitely is playing homage to Hyouka with the puppet imagery, except the intent and message of the puppets is inverted, as Kobato is on the outside warm and agreeable but inwardly cold and dismissive of others, meanwhile Oreki is abrasive and distant on the outside but inside cares deeply and passionately and hates even accidentally treating people as mere puzzles.
I also think despite Osanai's more vengeful behavior she is actually more in touch with her emotions and less "cold" then Kobato, Kobato I think sees a lot of situations as a game, while Osanai while she puts forth plans, all of them are very personal to her and based on her own warped sense of justice.
In earlier scenes in the show you see her express sadness about people's house being broken into, and their property generally destroyed.
Kobato is more well behaved, and likely has better impulse control, but I don't think he cares in the same way Osanai does, Osanai just doesn't express her care through compassion.
This doesn't mean I think Kobato doesn't have a conscience or that there aren't people he cares about. But rather his default expression is rationalization.
I also think his care is very egocentric, in the talk he got onto Osanai for breaking the law, putting herself in danger, and using him.
But I think the order of importance was reversed, and a lot of the general moralizing is rationalizing his grandstanding to her. The Only part that really hurt was her betrayal of his trust. If it weren't for that, he likely would have found it a fun puzzle.
I think that's what Osanai said that all he does is "think" he rationalizes away his feelings instead of being honest with himself and her.
He doesn't want to be ordinary, he just doesn't want to be disliked by his peers for acting out of what he considers ordinary. When he either should be less smug about other people, or he should just accept that some people just won't like him.
A lot of his character flaws are his own Ego.
Osanai herself also thinks too much, as a way to rationalize her actions towards others. If Kobato can't be honest with himself, Osanai can't be honest with others.
That's the real source behind their problems, its not whether or not they are "ordinary" that's just a coping mechanism to blame for their own character flaws. Until they can deal with that, even with someone that understand them, they can't be happy, or make the other happy.
I really like their relationship, as it expresses both the idea that people can meet someone that is in a sense their "understander" in way that makes them compatible then with most other people, but that does not take away from the fact that that alone cannot make a relationship last.
I'm guessing in finding a new partner to try to rebound from this, they'll learn this the hard way. That despite how they ill used each other, they also did have something special with each other they squandered, maybe being apart from it will help them find out what really went wrong.
Also the guy that asked Osanai out, I'm pretty sure if the guy that opted out of the snack game in the hot sauce spiked pastry episode. Ironic the person he's searching for happens to be the girl that caught his eye.
I'm curious what exactly each of the two new characters sees in our two main leads that made them ask them out rather quickly after their "break up."

19:48 Actually, you wrong. Osanai already even planned to end their relationship from episode 7.
    20:10
I don't agree with these statements. Osanai is clearly a person with a pile of emotions. Kobato is definitely more fitting for him; his emotions are logical; he can only think. The only time he opened his heart was when he was talking with Kengo in episode 3.
