It's a great regret of my life that I never saw Ian perform one of the seminal songs of my life, Summer Wages. I split my time as a kid between Vancouver and my uncle's cattle ranch in Alberta. We were in western Alberta near the Rockies and couldn't get any local radio, but through some freakish goings on in the atmosphere I could get a couple radio stations out of the American south on my little orange transistor radio. First Ian Tyson song I heard coming out of Texas was Someday Soon, performed by Judy Collins. I wanted to grow up to be the guy she was singing about. Then a couple years later, again out of the American south, I heard Summer Wages. What the hell? They're singing about my home town way down in Texas? That's when Summer Wages became perhaps my favourite song ever. And every once in awhile, when significant events in my life take place, there it is, again.
