Bob Dylan is the greatest song writer of all time. No other single person can match him for both music and lyrics. He literally has hundreds of great songs. He has been covered more than any other single artist. If you want to hear more, two incredible albums are Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. Definitely would like to hear more reactions to his music.

A brother , check out , Dylan's " Blind Willie McTell". I think you will love it! I would like to have Eric Clapton or Ray Charles sing Blind Willie McTell. But I believe you will still love Dylan's rough edged voice especially when his rendition of " Knockin on heaven's door". Hey not even McCarthy or Michael Jackson were perfect but in terms of poetry and music only McCartney rivals him and McCartney had the benefit of a sweet voice and a legendary bands. I am a black woman in my 60's and grew up in the ghetto and I literally have been listening to Mr. Dylan since I was 5 years old. My jam back in the day was "Positively 4th Street". My dad, who was born & bred in the deep south, bought me a copy of "Blood on The Tracks" the day it came out. What you'll learn if you haven't already is that you don't listen to Dylan to hear him sing. The man can't carry a tune in a diamond encrusted gold bucket. No you listen to Dylan for the words. Once they get into your head, you will find yourself quoting them all day. Dylan was Jimi Hendrix idol! He LOVED everything about Dylan. His poetry, his voice, his ability to tell a story. It's no secret that Hendrix despised his own singing voice. He wanted to sing like Dylan.

Dylan invented rap (subterranean homesick blues), he invented music videos. "Critics have described "Like a Rolling Stone" as revolutionary in its combination of musical elements, the youthful, cynical sound of Dylan's voice, and the directness of the question "How does it feel?". Despite all his other accomplishments, Every Grain of Sand is Dylan's masterpiece. He's a charismatic Christian and openly says the words were given him in about 8 minutes.

Dylan’s music is that far above everyone else that most people just don’t get him, fortunately the Nobel prize people did. Not that he cares or do his fans.
It is and is not at the same time. The thing with Dylan is that it helps to have an appreciation of history when listening or reading his lyrics. He will make some seemingly obtuse reference in a song that is actually explained by another seemingly obtuse reference he will make in the same song. And unless you understood what you were up against going in, you will be left with a headache. It's why I said Positively 4th Street was my jam back in the day. When I first heard it, I was simply intrigued by the fact that he never used the words "positively' or "4th Street" anywhere in the song. I quite easily understood that he was mad at somebody by the words. But it was not until 20 years later when I heard the title ,"Straight Outta Compton" that I got the full appreciation of the name of the song. It is a "diss" song of the first water, and despite all of the bullshit reasons I've read as to why the title is what it is (i.e. Dylan is rarely that literal), it finally dawned on me that calling it "Positively 4th Street" or even "Straight Outta Compton" refers to the vernacular or the lingo of how this tale is being told. Meaning I'm giving it to you straight from the street, how the non-fake people speak. So I would say that the only thing anyone can fault Polo or anyone else who don't mention Dylan's lyrics is not having enough frame of reference or Time.

My main point (and probably not clearly explained) is that I don't think anyone can jump into Dylan without FIRST realizing that much of his music needs to be listened to through a lens of history and time. Most of the time you hear the average person speak on Dylan's lyrics, it's usually contains some combination of the words "I don't get it."😂 Not to be prejudiced about it, but it takes a special kind of mind to understand let alone appreciate a Dylan song. You nailed it when you said that his singing is sincere and authentic. There's no doubt that he believes what he's singing. The lyrics came from within. His delivery is the performance. His voice isn't the cleanest in tone, but he hits the notes without any gimmicks. If you want to hear Dylan's other voices, listen to Nashville Skyline, John Wesley Harding and Self Portrait. Beatty Zimmerman, Bob's mother said that Nashville Skyline was her son's real singing voice. I think that the song, "Pretty Saro", which he did not write, is the best example and shows his true vocal range from that time. Personally, my fave of the combination of vocal strength and lyrical power is "Idiot Wind". Specifically the studio outtake version take #6. Give that a listen with headphones on. It's considered by many to be at or near the top of his compositions. The popular take is that Dylan blew out his voice during the Rolling Thunder Revue Tours in 75-76. Powerful, raucous performances.

Cocker is one of two white people with soul. (the other one being Janis Joplin). He did have hot black ladies on back up which counteracted his gravelly voice. "Feelin' Alright" is great and so is "By With A little Help From My Friends."

Yeah, I would love to see you react to more about Dylan. He is just unmatched as a lyricist. Period. I’d suggest Blind Willie McTell, Visions of Johanna, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall. Just the tip of the iceberg and it’s pretty subjective. You could do one of Dylan songs absolutely brilliant.
Dylan wrote Girl from the North country and than did a nice duet with Johnny Cash which surprised a lot of people. I think the duet is unique and you might like it.

His vocals on *Pretty Saro,* *I've Forgotten More Than You'll Ever Know,* and most tracks from *Self-Portrait* and *Another Self- Portrait* are almost unrecognizable as Dylan. With over 400 songs in his catalog, there is a lot to choose from. Lay,Lady,Lay is Dylan with a totally different voice. Love Minus Zero, No Limit is an incredible song. Jokerman or Series of Dreams are great songs that are often overlooked. Subterranean Homesick Blues is a classic and is definitely one you should listen to.
Throughout the years I've seen Bob Dylan in person 3 times. I was reading his lyrics as a teenager in high school and that was when he first came on the scene. His voice never really bothered me because it changed depending on what he was trying to say.
I would recommend Mr. Tambourine Man, The Times, they are a changing, Subterranean homesick blues. Any of his old music over this. Try You Gotta Serve Somebody.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was on Shot of Love, his 21st album and the third in his religious series, which I didn't much care for. It just blew me away with its beauty both in the lyrics and the instrumental. I couldn't believe that after 20 years and so many great songs, he STILL had the creativity to come up with yet another unforgettable song. I mean, it sounds like a folk tune that would have come down through the centuries. The thing about Dylan is that you can't pin him down. As soon as you think you know where he's coming from, he changes. He horrified the folk world, where he first came from, by picking up an electric guitar. Then he horrified the rock world by doing some country albums. Then he shocked pretty much everybody by getting into the Christian music. Then he came out the other side of that and just kept going. The only type of music he hasn't done (to my knowledge) is jazz. He is the Shakespeare of popular music. I don't know which of his songs you've done so far, but just pick any of these: Blowin in the Wind, Maggie's Farm, Tangled Up in Blue, Like a Rolling Stone, Positively Fourth Street, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Simple Twist of Fate. Anything.

I'm looking at all the other recommendations and i say yeah! There's really no end if you're looking for good Dylan songs. Here's one, which i haven't seen a reaction to, " Romance in Durango". He's probably covered every style of music, but this one has the"Mexican" feel. Great story, like watching a movie.

One thing to remember, with Bob it’s all about the lyrics. If you don’t concentrate on his message, you’re missing 75% of his genius. It can take some time to really appreciate Dylan...have to try to get past the voice at times, but when you do you really enter another world of appreciation for his ability to write a song and get his message across. His sincerity in what he sings really comes across more than just about any other artist. Listen to the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol, or You're a Big Girl Now...Forever Young...Lay Lady Lay...Don't Think Twice it's Alright....The Ballad of Hollis Brown, Most of the Time...Gotta Serve Somebody...etc. etc.. The album versions of all those songs are amazing.
I remember when he first came to NYC. He hung out at Gerde's Folk City in the Village & sang at Pete Seeger's hootenannies at Town Hall. His voice wasn't as important as what he had to say & the way he said it. .He became a folk music star from those concert appearances. They got him attention and record sales. Another talented singer/songwriter at the time was Phil Ochs. He had a better voice than Dylan & was just as much a poet but more politically involved. Sadly, he passed way too young but his music is still around. If you get a chance listen to "Changes" or "I've Had Her""- lovely ballads - or "Draft Dodger Rag" or "Small Circle of Friends". Worth a listen.
You're spot on about Dylan being sincere--except when he's being ironic. And even then, there's a truth in his irony. There are cover versions of his songs that sound much prettier--and somewhat disposable. But when he sings those same songs, they sound absolutely essential. It's not just his sincerity but it's his phrasing that no one else can match. Except Elvis, Frank Sinatra and the greatest blues singers. There's a solo version of this song on The Bootleg Series 1-3 that murders this take. It's hard to go wrong with tracks from any of his three "prophetic" albums (because at this late date, there's no better way to describe them): Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde. But if you want to go later, (you've already reacted to "Tangled Up In Blue") some of my faves are "Too Much of Nothing" from the Basement Tapes, "Isis" from Desire, "Sweetheart Like You" from Infidels and practically all of Time Out Of Mind. Who's the other Nobel Prize-winning songwriter? Oh right, no one.

Thanks for doing this, I'm the one who asked for it. For me and others whose comments I've read, he would deserve the Nobel prize if this were the only song he ever wrote. Dylan invented rap (subterranean homesick blues), he invented music videos. "Critics have described "Like a Rolling Stone" as revolutionary in its combination of musical elements, the youthful, cynical sound of Dylan's voice, and the directness of the question "How does it feel?". Despite all his other accomplishments, Every Grain of Sand is Dylan's masterpiece. He's a charismatic Christian and openly says the words were given him in about 8 minutes.

It is and is not at the same time.
The thing with Dylan is that it helps to have an appreciation of history when listening or reading his lyrics. He will make some seemingly obtuse reference in a song that is actually explained by another seemingly obtuse reference he will make in the same song. And unless you understood what you were up against going in, you will be left with a headache.
It's why I said Positively 4th Street was my jam back in the day. When I first heard it, I was simply intrigued by the fact that he never used the words "positively' or "4th Street" anywhere in the song. I quite easily understood that he was mad at somebody by the words. But it was not until 20 years later when I heard the title ,"Straight Outta Compton" that I got the full appreciation of the name of the song. It is a "diss" song of the first water, and despite all of the bullshit reasons I've read as to why the title is what it is (i.e. Dylan is rarely that literal), it finally dawned on me that calling it "Positively 4th Street" or even "Straight Outta Compton" refers to the vernacular or the lingo of how this tale is being told. Meaning I'm giving it to you straight from the street, how the non-fake people speak.
So I would say that the only thing anyone can fault Polo or anyone else who don't mention Dylan's lyrics is not having enough frame of reference or Time.

Oh no Wretch, I meant no implication that YOU personally found any fault with Polo or anyone else. My main point (and probably not clearly explained) is that I don't think anyone can jump into Dylan without FIRST realizing that much of his music needs to be listened to through a lens of history and time.
Most of the time you hear the average person speak on Dylan's lyrics, it's usually contains some combination of the words "I don't get it."😂
Not to be prejudiced about it, but it takes a special kind of mind to understand let alone appreciate a Dylan song.

You nailed it when you said that his singing is sincere and authentic. There's no doubt that he believes what he's singing. The lyrics came from within. His delivery is the performance. His voice isn't the cleanest in tone, but he hits the notes without any gimmicks. If you want to hear Dylan's other voices, listen to Nashville Skyline, John Wesley Harding and Self Portrait. Beatty Zimmerman, Bob's mother said that Nashville Skyline was her son's real singing voice. I think that the song, "Pretty Saro", which he did not write, is the best example and shows his true vocal range from that time. Personally, my fave of the combination of vocal strength and lyrical power is "Idiot Wind". Specifically the studio outtake version take #6. Give that a listen with headphones on. It's considered by many to be at or near the top of his compositions.
The popular take is that Dylan blew out his voice during the Rolling Thunder Revue Tours in 75-76. Powerful, raucous performances.

Cocker is one of two white people with soul. (the other one being Janis Joplin). He did have hot black ladies on back up which counteracted his gravelly voice. "Feelin' Alright" is great and so is "By With A little Help From My Friends."

I love Dylan's rough edged voice but such notables as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia , Joan Baez vocals may be more to your liking. They all have rendered beautiful versions

I’d suggest Blind Willie McTell, Visions of Johanna, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall. Just the tip of the iceberg and it’s pretty subjective. You could do one of Dylan songs absolutely brilliant.
Dylan wrote Girl from the North country and than did a nice duet with Johnny Cash which surprised a lot of people. I think the duet is unique and you might like it.

With over 400 songs in his catalog, there is a lot to choose from. Lay,Lady,Lay is Dylan with a totally different voice. Love Minus Zero, No Limit is an incredible song. Jokerman or Series of Dreams are great songs that are often overlooked. Subterranean Homesick Blues is a classic and is definitely one you should listen to.
Back, when Dylan plays harmonica makes me want to cry. Try listening to Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. Flip side Blood on the Tracks.
Throughout the years I've seen Bob Dylan in person 3 times. I was reading his lyrics as a teenager in high school and that was when he first came on the scene. His voice never really bothered me because it changed depending on what he was trying to say.

I remember the first time I heard this song. It was on Shot of Love, his 21st album and the third in his religious series, which I didn't much care for. It just blew me away with its beauty both in the lyrics and the instrumental. I couldn't believe that after 20 years and so many great songs, he STILL had the creativity to come up with yet another unforgettable song. I mean, it sounds like a folk tune that would have come down through the centuries.
The thing about Dylan is that you can't pin him down. As soon as you think you know where he's coming from, he changes. He horrified the folk world, where he first came from, by picking up an electric guitar. Then he horrified the rock world by doing some country albums. Then he shocked pretty much everybody by getting into the Christian music. Then he came out the other side of that and just kept going. The only type of music he hasn't done (to my knowledge) is jazz. He is the Shakespeare of popular music.
I don't know which of his songs you've done so far, but just pick any of these: Blowin in the Wind, Maggie's Farm, Tangled Up in Blue, Like a Rolling Stone, Positively Fourth Street, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Simple Twist of Fate. Anything.

I'm looking at all the other recommendations and i say yeah! There's really no end if you're looking for good Dylan songs. Here's one, which i haven't seen a reaction to, " Romance in Durango". He's probably covered every style of music, but this one has the"Mexican" feel.

Bob’s catalogue is the deepest and finest in all of music. I could list 50 tracks for you that are all monumentally good and you’d have only scratched the surface. One thing to remember, with Bob it’s all about the lyrics. If you don’t concentrate on his message, you’re missing 75% of his genius. That said, check out (all original studio tracks): Blowing in the Wind, Mr Tambourine Man, With God on Our Side, The Times They Are A Changing, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Blowing in the Wind, Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, Like a Rolling Stone, It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding, Hurricane, Boots of Spanish Leather and Just Like a Woman. I could go on and on, but this small sampling will give you a taste of the man’s genius.

It can take some time to really appreciate Dylan...have to try to get past the voice at times, but when you do you really enter another world of appreciation for his ability to write a song and get his message across. His sincerity in what he sings really comes across more than just about any other artist. Listen to the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol, or You're a Big Girl Now...Forever Young...Lay Lady Lay...Don't Think Twice it's Alright....The Ballad of Hollis Brown, Most of the Time...Gotta Serve Somebody...etc. etc.. The album versions of all those songs are amazing.
I remember when he first came to NYC. He hung out at Gerde's Folk City in the Village & sang at Pete Seeger's hootenannies at Town Hall. His voice wasn't as important as what he had to say & the way he said it. .He became a folk music star from those concert appearances. They got him attention and record sales.
Another talented singer/songwriter at the time was Phil Ochs. He had a better voice than Dylan & was just as much a poet but more politically involved. Sadly, he passed way too young but his music is still around. If you get a chance listen to "Changes" or "I've Had Her""- lovely ballads - or "Draft Dodger Rag" or "Small Circle of Friends". Worth a listen.

You're spot on about Dylan being sincere--except when he's being ironic. And even then, there's a truth in his irony. There are cover versions of his songs that sound much prettier--and somewhat disposable. But when he sings those same songs, they sound absolutely essential.
It's not just his sincerity but it's his phrasing that no one else can match. Except Elvis, Frank Sinatra and the greatest blues singers.
There's a solo version of this song on The Bootleg Series 1-3 that murders this take.
It's hard to go wrong with tracks from any of his three "prophetic" albums (because at this late date, there's no better way to describe them): Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde.
But if you want to go later, (you've already reacted to "Tangled Up In Blue") some of my faves are "Too Much of Nothing" from the Basement Tapes, "Isis" from Desire, "Sweetheart Like You" from Infidels and practically all of Time Out Of Mind.

“The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” is a favorite. Difficult to choose from Dylan’s catalogue (600 plus songs). He also won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for his memoir “Chronicles: Volume One.” Just sayin….
