  • How I use variations of cross stitch in my slowstitch pieces. This is by no means a tutorial on how to do 'proper' cross stitch, but more me giving my thoughts about stitching crosses into my work and other random witterings. 😊

    I enjoy your "whittering". Some people I don't, but your voice is very calm and measured. And you're showing as well as "telling" so that's getting through what you intend. I enjoy the lessons. Plus the end effect of how the stitches are placed, is quite clear. Glad I found your channel. I've already 'slow stitched' two small squares (which I ended up being somewhat pleased with), without any pre-conceived "images" in my head on what I was aiming for, and have refreshed some rusty skills; cross stitch will be included in the next one for sure. It's kind of like using textiles to make collages. Very enjoyable. I've been "painting" with fabrics and threads. These lessons are a hybrid between "strict rules to produce a stitch" and "go outside the box and enjoy yourself". Just my style.

    I love the use of cross stitches in the different ways. When you say “this one is properly done” … what is properly? I like to think it’s done right if you wanted to do it that way.
    I totally understood what you were saying when you said you had the varying crosses, done individually, vs. the line of stitches. I think each one has its place.
    Thank you for sharing, look forward to more

    As a new follower, I was catching up on what I've missed tonight and admonishing my screen as you were making the first set of cross stitch stitches, lol. I just knew that the back of your fabric had stitches going in two different directions, and had a wee bit of a reaction, lol. So, I now know that slow stitching for me will still include some of the 'rules' that have become ingrained in my psyche. After all, I've been doing some of these things for over 50 years, being more free or 'rustic' will cause the exact stress that slow stitching is supposed to relieve. I won't let my little handicap stop me from enjoying the exercises, though. I can't wait to get started!

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales  7 місяців тому +1

      I can so relate, after many years of doing traditional hand quilting and piecing, matching points, so many stitches per inch, etc. The stress of trying to achieve that began to outweigh the pleasure. But slowstitch isn't about doing things in a sloppy way, it's about focusing on the process. So if certain things stress you if they are 'wrong', do them 'right'. 😉 It would still be slowstitch... It's such a personal thing. You have to do what is right for you, only be aware of the materials, the process, how you feel while making etc. Then you will be slowstitching 🤗❤️

    I am stitching on my woven piece whilst watching these instructional stitch videos. Already I am starting to think differently about the kind of fabric I want and also getting a feel for the stitches. My stash has come from scrap bags I have purchased so really colourful. However, I am liking the coloured stitching and want them to show more. Will have to rethink my choices. Being a newbie can't tell you how helpful you are being. It is a voyage of discovery for sure x

    A tiny bit different way of looking at something and/or a tiny bit different way of describing something can make all the difference in the world. I have been dabbling.... for the past couple of months.... in learning some basic embroidery stitches and the cross stitch was "bothering me." My late-sister-in-law used to do counted cross stitch and that was not my cup of tea - too finicky. Intellectually I knew that one could sew a cross stitch the "traditional way" but I always forgot which corner I was supposed to start in. So I had figured out that I could make a running stitch and then make another running stitch in the opposite direction and I would end up with a cross stitch that wasn't angled but rather one horizontal line and one vertical line. But I never had a name for it. From now on, I shall call it a "crossed running stitch." Perfect. I am working my way through all of your videos and bookmarking them for future reference. I want to be caught up and have a clean slate to start the 2024 slow stitch project. Yay !!!! I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you for sharing your talent and inspiration with all of us.

    Like so many others I’ve enjoyed counted cross stitching with its beautiful results. And also agree it can be tedious and the need for free stitching is a must. Slow stitching is such a joy. Mixing fabric bits with any stitch you choose to create with any string/yarn or embellishment you want to add is simply relaxing and fun. Thanks for sharing the outcome difference by how you orientate your cross stitches. Love your channel, your teaching style.

    😮Hi Kathryn ❤,
    I loved your video , you make perfect sense, because I have tried cross stitch and found it abit too organised for me if you know what I mean with the stitches been regimental x.
    I found I was worrying about the correct way to lay the stitches more than enjoying the stitching, so
    I know I will love cross stitch in slow stitching it’s more organic and adds more texture on the eye xx
    I love the way you use cross stitch in different ways , I always worried about the stitches laying in the correct way , so I personally found I did not enjoy it like slow stitching them .
    Thank you so much for your explanation ❤️ how my slow stitching makes me feel is so relaxing and absolutely love it x ❤

    Thank you! I’ve been stitching small stuff for years and muddling alone in the hand stitching hinterland. While raising four kids I wanted to actually finish things and projects had to be portable, so “collaging” scraps and mending children’s clothing seemed to go hand in hand. I would love to know what kinds of fabric you like to use. I use a lot of natural fibre cloth but often don’t like the fraying edges. I’ve never tried eco dying and want to try this too.
