Mr Tom Alter was much more than an actor. He was a charming human being with a golden heart. He was also very highly intelligent and that is something that was also genetic to him as his brother also possessed that razor sharp with intelligence. Mr Tom Alters command of Hindi was much better than most of us who are commenting on this video, and his knowledge of Urdu was on a whole different level. He lived a vibrant and full life bringing his lovely sense of humour to every situation and had a highly inspiring and infectious can do attitude. He was as happy to do plays and tv series as any movie. I am just writing all this to express my opinion that he was not very deeply affected by being underrated as an actor. A man who is so secure in his own self lives mostly in the moment. And yes the industry type casts people based on their looks and colour. Mr Alter probably didn't want to do the normal hero type dancing in front of 50 background dancers singing love duets. I'm sorry Jamie if I'm presuming to know your wonderful father too much. If it is offensive in any way kindly holler and i will delete this treatise.

OP was a small fish in the business of plagiarism. With no formal training in music, he also managed to give pleasant non- plagiarized songs. Because he had the back up of excellent singers, he could Indianize his copied tunes very well.
Now if you were to talk about a major “offender”, Shankar of SJ would top the list.
Others like Hemant Kumar and even SD Burman occasionally lifted tunes but they camouflaged their songs pretty good to hide the origins of some of their songs.
    And I don’t even wanna go into the 1980s or 90s !
You presented it pretty good, Jamie.

James Alter has done a marvelous job of catching some highly reputable music maestros of Indian film industry. With his impeccable hindi accent, he must understand that Indian films and film goers demand a song for every silly situation..like happy, sad, wedding, breakups, etc. So, each indian film had 6 to 8 songs. Where will these poor guys go for tunes??? Anyways, hats off to the Indian lyricists for providing lyrics to these so-called lifted tunes...!!!

Yes, the inspired songs mostly at least up to eighties, were a few lines of the Mukhra ( the same is done world over known as sampling) or a piece of music. The music director now has to compose a matching prelude, interlude and most difficult, a matching antara ( which Western songs do not have ). Here some have failed and some excelled. Inspiration or adaptation must be expanded with own compositions that merge seamlessly musically and then only a memorable song is created or recreated. Otherwise it is just a poor copy doing injustice even to the original

Each of the Bollywood's top composers in those days had to compose innumerable numbers in each year. The total number of songs that any one of them had to handle on a single year could have challenged the numbers brought out by a Hollywood music composer in his life time. Still, these geniuses, either from Bengal or Punjab or Maharashtra or from elsewhere brought out unimerable hits in every year with outstanding tunes which are still mesmerizing and have become legends. With so many numbers to roll out regularly in time, as a music director, to ease the pressure, occasionally they were either inspired or even copied pre-composed items. Still there skill, dedication and ability were extraordinary and deserve salute.

I personally like old Hindi Music and grew up listening to Mohd Rafi and Kishore Da. Bollywood being influenced by global music is not a problem, but not giving credit is. Our public is so straightforward and trusting that they are not aware that our God like music directors, behind closed doors, love to copy tunes from around the world and pass it off as original.
Creating original music is not easy. It can take many months and a lot of trial and error to compose one. Even after that song may flop. Success ratio is less than 10%. But have we wondered how our music directors quickly churn out 80% or 90% hit songs from a single movie in just a few days? You guessed it - by copying! But thanks to UA-cam, it cannot remain hidden for long 😀.
I think there is plenty of talent in India that can create great original music loved by people around the world. However this can happen only after we stop glorifying copied music.
