    I LOVE this!!! Building relationships is HUGE!!! I feel my classes are always most productive when I have spent time knowing who they are and what makes them feel proud of themselves. I teach preschool & early elementary fitness and wellness classes and they know that I want to hear their stories but ONLY after they have listened to my lesson and participated in our exercises or lesson of the day. We call it Stories AFTER Stamps. They will earn a stamp at the end of each class right before our cool down & stretching time. I use this time to either let some of the students tell me a story about their week/day OR if the class has not all earned their stamps, we use this time to think about what we could do better next week and how we can help each other stay on task. This really gets my students to work as a family/team to earn their story time.

    I'm so happy that I came across your channel! I'm a TA right now and I'm really considering teaching. I'm praying that God will reveal to me if this is what he wants me to be doing because I really feel like it is. I've also worked at an after school program and I had a very hard time with classroom management so this video helped a lot! I look forward to watching more of your videos.

      Yes ! If GOD wants you to be somewhere, it doesn't mean there won't be hurdles (ex. : with classroom management), but HIS grace will be sufficient for you ! There is light at the end of the tunnel (boy, was mine a long one 😂) !

    The #1 that you mentioned is critical. I'm in my 3rd year (hopefully last year) of substitute teaching, and I tried something new. I stand at the front of a classroom door with my phone out. I tell the students that I am going to time them once I let them go inside. I stop my timer once everyone is "ready to learn." I started this about a month ago with 6th graders. This worked with all four of the 6th grade classrooms at this one particular school in RUSD (Yup, that is Riverside!). There is a competitive nature in students, so I even tried this with a 3rd grade class last Thursday and guess what... it worked with them as well. I got to a point where I can hide my timer/phone (or not do it at all. I just don't tell them), and the students still treat the circumstance as if I'm timing them.

      That shouldn’t be the case. You need to have an interactive class but at the same time you need to set expectations and agreements in the beginning of the year in order for that to happen.

    I love all of these because you're setting the tone for your classroom and students will know what is expected of them. I have done some of these techniques with my kids and it has worked WONDERS lol. My only question is, when you first started teaching, did you get overwhelmed if students were constantly interrupting? I'm having this issue now, especially because this particular student is starting to affect the others where they're all constantly interrupting. If there's any advice you could give me, it would be greatly appreciated 🙂

    • @mayaleex3
      @mayaleex3  6 років тому +6

      Hi Dina! YES. Especially older students...seem to interrupt a lot more often. It's a life skill they need to learn! When a student interrupts, I just stop and stare at the student hahahaha. And patiently wait...and then say "ENOUGH". After class, I'll then talk to the student about their behavior and that it's rude to interrupt someone when they're talking :)

    I wanted to ask for a piece of advice. What do I do if a student I'm tutoring doesn't do his homework?
    The parents don't control that, getting stickers for his work doesn't work as well etc

    • @mayaleex3
      @mayaleex3  6 років тому +3

      Hmm...he needs to see the value in doing his homework in order to be self-driven. Perhaps ask him why he doesn't want to, and that even in sports they need to practice before the games. Homework is a way to practice their skills and get better and better. Or, you could try saying for every homework assignment he does, you can play a short game together for 5 minutes or something!

    Hi Maya, I love your channel! I am teaching math in high school in California, and I would like to start my own channel about teaching. I am Korean and I am thinking it would be nice to show what teaching life is like in America to Korean people :) I am curious about policies/rules about recording at school though. Did you get permission from the school principal? students and parents? I know that I won't film students at all but I am just curious about having my camera on at school. I hope my question makes sense! Thank you!

    • @mayaleex3
      @mayaleex3  6 років тому

      Hi Ara! Thank you so much for watching :) My principal does know about my channel, and we talked about boundaries. I don't talk about it with my students or parents because it's more personal than business :) but I usually record before school, during my lunch, or after school! Just so my attention is focused on the kiddos!

    What would you advise on how to manage teenagers?

    • @annakisiona2132
      @annakisiona2132 5 років тому

      I recommend lots of games. Oral language, fitness, maths challenges, silent ball.. teens love games as much as the lil ones and you'll be surprised how competitive they can become especially if you have a little prize for the winner.. use the games as brain breaks or an incentive to finish work on time!

    How do you manage students who never finish their work? Do they stay in at recess to finish?

    • @mayaleex3
      @mayaleex3  6 років тому

      Hi! Great question -- usually I have them stay in and finish it, or they'll finish it for homework. If it's reoccurring because they're talking, then that's on them. If they're not finishing because they're slow workers (which some are) then I'll start to modify their assignments!

      What you can do is ask the class how much time they need to complete a specific assignment. Once they come to a consensus, then use a timer to show them how much time they have. This makes them accountable for completing their work. If some students do not finish, then write on their papers the amount of time given. If the same students are not completing their assignments, then you may have to modify their work. Keep those papers to let the parents know what is happening.

    As an educator, I appreciate your tips. However, I find proactive teaching to be more effective than reactive. The tally marks, taking away recess/lunchtime, not talking out of turn-- "ever" is very demeaning & punitive. In your class, the Morning Meetings are not daily but as you say very important. Yet, lasts only 10-15 minutes. Social-Emotional learning is vital to creating a positive classroom climate. We must be a model for our students, teach social skills and be constantly building our relationships throughout the day. Authoritarian teaching leads to students complying out of fear. Silence does not equal learning & with limited practice for communications skills. I feel your tips in correcting student behavior have shown vary rarely will not last over time. Perhaps, including students to create rules in the classroom will help build on being good citizens inside & outside the classroom. It's important that teachers model the behavior they wish their students to emulate. * If interested: Three Guiding Principles (Brophy, 1983)

    • @jaydel3
      @jaydel3 3 роки тому +2

      That’s idealistic thinking which doesn’t translate to the real world. How can you expect to teach when kids keep random ly blurting out things. They aren’t randomly yelling answers and critical thinking thoughts. Most interrupt with irrelevant comment and juvenile jokes. Also, they can create their own rules.. and? They will break them still. It doesn’t make a difference. Notice how more students act out today than say in the 90s and prior. Now you hear students calling the teacher the B word and we are supposedly to react like “Oh he’s having a bad day.” Back then you are suspended and then you never do it again knowing full well the consequences. Students need structure and this whole “let them be kids” mentality is causing nightmare scenarios all over the Western world. Notice how Asian students intrinsically learn and are respectful. They don’t need to be coddled and given excuses.
