I think one of the hardest things I’ve seen in the title 1 school I work at is...watching teachers and other staff attempt to correct behaviors in children in order to help that child succeed in their future, and knowing that it all goes out the window when that child gets home. It seems sometimes that so many parents contradict what a teacher may say, not realizing that the teacher is always just trying to help their child have an easier time in school. Sometimes it feels like you’ll take one step forward in school, and then the kid gets pushed two steps back every time they go home.
Im about to go into my masters/credential program to become and elementary teacher. To be honest, I get so much anxiety watching UA-cam videos of teachers giving tips, talking about teaching, what they love about teaching, etc. Because I just assume that since they’re already teachers they have everything down when it comes to classroom management. I imagine that they don’t deal with behavioral issues in the classroom anymore. I have been in classrooms and have taught some lessons and I have dealt with so many behavior issues that that sometimes i feel like “maybe I’m not meant to be a teacher” and I don’t feel like I’m good enough. I want to thank you for being so vulnerable, you made me feel as if I’m not alone and that even teachers who have done this for years have problems sometimes too. Keep reminding yourself that they are just kids, because no matter what, you are helping them grow and you are inspiring them even if it’s in the simplest of ways. ❤️

We don't have classroom management down even after many years teaching. Every year we get surprises, and not in a good way either. It also depends on how much support you get from your administration and district as far as discipline is concerned.
You really need a hug right now! You are on the right track by documenting incidents. Have you noticed how these things happen when you are not around? That can be a frustrating part. Do your best to enjoy the new semester and get your rest when you can. Take care.
I think its so easy to compare ourselves to those teachers who show up a hour and a half early and stay 2 hours late. I did it for a year and it drained everything out of me. It wasnt until i cut myself off and said if Im arriving early then im leaving on time or if i arrive on time Im leaving late but I can;t do both. I was running the wick down at both ends on top of trying to keep up a youtube, blog and exercise, hangout with friends aka just be a human. SO I applaud those who can do it and dont want to weep themselves to bed at night but I dont think we have to be that to be an amazing and dedicated teacher.
I am trying to get hired as a new teacher as a second career with a non-education degree. But this makes me nervous. As a single mom I definitely don't want teaching to be my life. My kid is my life, plus I want to enjoy time for myself of course
Behavior management is one of my strongest points as a teacher. I also believe that this is the first thing to tackle because without it teaching is a nightmare. I have seen so many teachers struggle with this to the point of wanting to leave the profession. A few things I do to get and maintain a quiet classroom. By the way I only work in the inner city. 1) One of the most important things is to show children your true emotions. If you are not happy with them at the moment do not smile and pretend you are. Show an upset face if that’s what you feel. 2) Be Firm! Many teachers mistake this for being mean. You do not have to be mean but children need to see that you mean what you say and that you are the teacher not them and students will respect you I promise. 3) Follow Through! OMG this is one of the most important. Students need to know that they cannot get away with naughty behavior. My students understand that if I take away 2 minutes of recess it is most definitely happening because I do not forget.😎 I have many more points but it would be to much to write. I can definitely help with this area
This is my second year teaching and what makes teaching so difficult is my instructional aide. She has been there for 5 years and is practically qualify to be a teacher but is not choosing to because of the work load. I saw this late, but I personally think that is so not healthy for yourself mentally and emotionally and for your job. This teacher aide comparing you to previous teachers, watching and criticising or correcting your every move.....will not allow you to learn and develop in your own way. She/he is destroying you mentally and emotionally and is limiting your abilities.

It's my 3rd year of teaching in the Additional Needs Team, so we usually take groups out from certain classes and also cover teachers when they are either out sick or having to attend courses. I feel like in order to get students to do as I say or to behave in an appropriate manner I have to be 'strict' which just strips away at my being because it doesnt work and I am naturally a calm and quite laid back person. In the end, some of d classes I cover just end up being rowdy and nothing I do ever works. These are the days when I feel so jaded and just demoralised because I take these 'acts of disrespect' so personal that at the end of the day I am just drained. Help. What can I do?? :((

First year teaching and classroom management is a big issue for me. I dont know how to overcome this. I'm thinking of quitting teaching. All 4 year degree is for nothing right now.
I quit teaching in May because of how emotional drained I was, how unsupported I felt by admin when it came to student behaviors and (craycray) parents. I also could not stand by and watch to the admin sweep violent threats and behaviors under the rug... I am starting to miss the "good times", but not sure if it'll be worth it to go back.
The hardest thing for me is people putting my job down. Especially since I switched majors in college (used to do law but wasn’t for me) people ask me why I would want to be „just a teacher“. BUT the kids make it all worth it. :)
I feel when teachers teach small kids they will reamber you and when they are adapts some will go and visit you they you can couch yp ans talk about what they are doing I dont know you but I want to say thank you for all your hard work and God bless you
Teaching is an *AMAZING* profession. I have once heard that no class can be perfectly quiet. There are times when I try to get students' attention and it surprises me, each year I have the God-given opportunity to teach, how many students are musically-inclined. I sing a song (in French or Spanish) and more and more students in a class instantly catch on and get in tune with the lesson.
I believe our most important job is to plant seeds.....that’s exactly why I wanted to become a teacher because my home life sucked but Mr . Elison was always there for me....idk if he ever noticed how much I needed him but I did. A very thankless job for sure.
I've started working in a public school for the first time in January and never expected to work with children. My students are in middle school and some of the comments and attitudes they've shown towards me can be nasty. I also have some coworkers that I know are critical of my practices working with certain students and have talked about me behind my back. I just have to shut all of the negativity out and make myself be completely unaffected. The way that I do this is that I constantly remind myself that teaching is not about ME and how others make me feel, but about how I impact those around me, even if I never get anything in return. It's a truly selfless profession and requires quite a strong backbone. Your heart is definitely in the right place, but one truth in life is that we can't please everyone. When we accept that fact, we are able to live a much more peaceful life. You have done a FANTASTIC job and if there are students who have issues that you can't resolve, you have to remember that at that point the issue is with them and not you. You just have to keep persevering and not give up even if there is no chance of them ever changing. Don't doubt yourself because you're a huge inspiration to your UA-cam community and to your students too no doubt!
You should work in a special education class. They can kick you, bite you and spit on you and never get in trouble. Then the parents and administration gets upset at you because you couldn’t teach your class

I work with Behavior students, behavior caused by many different issues. Some students are damaged by there so called parent/parents then are put in a safer environment but the damage is done,then there are those that come to school, which should be a safe place but then go home to the person/persons that are as big of a mess that they have turned the child into. We try our best but some go home and all is undone, heartbreaking.
Hahaha I'm entering my third year of teaching n still have classroom management issues! Just last week I thought I had them but then this week my lesson plans totally flew out the window just coz of their behaviour in class 🤣 very frustrating but like you said, everyday is a new day💪 Keep up the great work ❤️
Right now I'm a paraprofessional trying to pass those tests to get certified. It's been only 7 months and im already having doubts 😥. Im not even the teacher, however, i get disrespected by ...not only students but teachers as well!! I wasted so much money but i dont want to give up but im starting to think this isn't for me.

I really appreciated your video, Maya. Often we are the only adult in the room and it can be an isolating job. When I was in my first year of teaching, I had no idea how challenging teaching truly was and I felt incompetent. It definitely helped when I realized I was far from alone. I so relate to everything you mentioned! As for feeling not dedicated enough, I go to school early in the morning and often leave past 6, but honestly, it is because I need to do it to survive. I really admire the teachers who have figured out how to have a better work-life balance and yet still be fantastic teachers. It is important to have time to recharge so that you can be the best you can be for the kids. :) I'm working on it!

You seem to have a sensitivity that would make kids comfortable around you, and to be honest, I really like your personality! Teaching is one of the hardest professions out there, and I applaud you for sharing your vulnerabilities in this video. I feel very similar in my own life - like I'm just not good enough in what I do. But maybe we're better than we think? And most definitely stronger than we think.

I’m actually starting my student teaching or clinical teaching next week! Classroom management is definitely a challenge- however, I find the most difficult challenge for me is the additional documentation. I love my kids SO much. I would walk through fire for them. It’s not them; it’s the way the government is allowing/mandating schools to be run. We have to choose between paperwork and teaching a good deal of the time and what breaks my heart is knowing I can only give 60% of myself to them on one day because I have to save the rest for non-teaching fillers. 😔
Its great to know I am not alone and face some of the same struggles as you while teaching! As a teacher we have to like the sound of our own voice, I swear I repeat things a thousand times over in a day😂

I just wanted to say, with respect to your first comment about feeling bad going home at the end of the day: this is a thing in all professions. I'm an attorney for a nonprofit, and I don't make as much money as you might assume an attorney does. For that and other reasons, I really prioritize leaving at the end of the business day and not staying late or working on the weekends. This is self-care, and not something to be ashamed of. People might look at you sideways about it for a little bit, but if you're gunning hard during work hours and getting everything done that you need to, it's a-ok. Chin up, girl. You're doing great.

My system for if I keep having to repeat myself is I write what I keep repeating and every time someone asks I circle the answer. Sometimes the circle can get really big.

My fear is that I won’t know material. Do you prep in the summer before entering the year? Like how do you go from second grade to fifth for example.

There are always some students that are checked out and it's usually nothing to do about it. Never feel bad about that because the problem is not you, it's something lacking in their lives at home.
I love this. I am currently in my practicum and every example you gave makes perfect sense. Oh the struggles, but the good just always seems to always make the bad things seem small. Reminds me a lot of being a parent and the day to day with my own kids.
I've been teaching students from 2 to 6 years old everyday since January. I thought it was just me that felt all of those weird feelings hahah you never feel good enough, valued enough, going to work can be a torture sometimes, but if you can't go for whatever reason you worry and think about your students all day, sometimes you hate planning, sometimes you wanna take your time and plan everything the best you can hahah sometimes your planned classes suck and some other times you improvise something that totally works, that makes you eternally anxious about classes. But take it all as a learning process and remember that as long as you're learning and trying to get better you're already a good teacher for that reason, respecting, caring and wanting the best for students is what makes good teachers

+Maya Lee School is challenging at times regardless if your are teacher or student but here you are handling things in your classes and in your classroom like a champ . When you are pushed you set the student to the side and conversate with them and settle the issue with them and move forward but back when I was an autistic student in elementary school My Main Teachers had a paddle and when My Main Teacher was pushed we the students were taken out in the hall with the teacher's assistants watching and we were turned against the wall outside of the classroom and they hit us 3 times with a paddle . This is only stating my experiences in elementary school . I grew and had a very negative view towards school back in those days and I would have rather had a teacher like you who would have slowed me down in my tracks and helped me through those times that I made a Disney Character Impression , or drew a Disney Cartoon or experience at Walt Disney World , etc . to try to destress myself or I got frustrated over a math problem or something in my morning work that included what we call board work where we copied everything that the teacher wrote on the chalk board including the assignments that the teacher wrote on the chalk board and I got so overwhelmed that I felt like sleeping in class and My Teachers would get frustrated with me and they would come to my desk and shout at me and I outburst a bit in response because they hit me in the behind 3 times with a paddle . Your students are lucky to have you as their teacher and here is a tip for you based on my experiences with My Teachers that were like in schools that were higher than elementary school that did not paddle . Wait until the academic pressure is off and the students are more free and it is almost the end of the school year and the students have the space to reflect on things and then they recognize how good that they had it with you and they may not be able to tell you due to being separated from you but the fruits of your labor does wind up paying off for them in the end . I am outside school math tutor. I am training and had the chance to teach the kids 3-5 at a time. So HARD!!! Patience needed and keeping their focus back at work. But when I see them use the things I taught I feel like they will use it in their life and I felt amazed at that.
Ok but that dident mean shatter the confidence of student instead of being excited my teacher made it so if I see math it makes me want to cry I’m not saying you do this but my teachers do

A student never tried to fight you for punishing them? A teacher friend of mine told me that a 1st grader threw a chair at him.
Yes please do write more advice. I especially want to know how to deal with the above example, of the kids throwing stuff at you or trying to hit you.
I think all of your points are easy to hear, but difficult to execute until you’re at a certain point of personal growth in life as well.

I feel like in order to get students to do as I say or to behave in an appropriate manner I have to be 'strict' which just strips away at my being because it doesnt work and I am naturally a calm and quite laid back person. In the end, some of d classes I cover just end up being rowdy and nothing I do ever works. These are the days when I feel so jaded and just demoralised because I take these 'acts of disrespect' so personal that at the end of the day I am just drained. Help. What can I do?? :((

First year teaching and classroom management is a big issue for me. I dont know how to overcome this. I'm thinking of quitting teaching. All 4 year degree is for nothing right now.

I quit teaching in May because of how emotional drained I was, how unsupported I felt by admin when it came to student behaviors and (craycray) parents. I also could not stand by and watch to the admin sweep violent threats and behaviors under the rug... I am starting to miss the "good times", but not sure if it'll be worth it to go back.
The hardest thing for me is people putting my job down. Especially since I switched majors in college (used to do law but wasn’t for me) people ask me why I would want to be „just a teacher“. BUT the kids make it all worth it. :)

Teaching is an *AMAZING* profession. I have once heard that no class can be perfectly quiet. There are times when I try to get students' attention and it surprises me, each year I have the God-given opportunity to teach, how many students are musically-inclined. I sing a song (in French or Spanish) and more and more students in a class instantly catch on and get in tune with the lesson.
I work at a cram school abroad, the owner of the school: the main thing about this position is to make sure they are alive and safe. LOL

I believe our most important job is to plant seeds.....that’s exactly why I wanted to become a teacher because my home life sucked but Mr . Elison was always there for me....idk if he ever noticed how much I needed him but I did. A very thankless job for sure.
I've started working in a public school for the first time in January and never expected to work with children. My students are in middle school and some of the comments and attitudes they've shown towards me can be nasty. I also have some coworkers that I know are critical of my practices working with certain students and have talked about me behind my back. I just have to shut all of the negativity out and make myself be completely unaffected. The way that I do this is that I constantly remind myself that teaching is not about ME and how others make me feel, but about how I impact those around me, even if I never get anything in return. It's a truly selfless profession and requires quite a strong backbone. Your heart is definitely in the right place, but one truth in life is that we can't please everyone. When we accept that fact, we are able to live a much more peaceful life. You have done a FANTASTIC job and if there are students who have issues that you can't resolve, you have to remember that at that point the issue is with them and not you. You just have to keep persevering and not give up even if there is no chance of them ever changing. Don't doubt yourself because you're a huge inspiration to your UA-cam community and to your students too no doubt!
You should work in a special education class. They can kick you, bite you and spit on you and never get in trouble. Then the parents and administration gets upset at you because you couldn’t teach your class

I work with Behavior students, behavior caused by many different issues. Some students are damaged by there so called parent/parents then are put in a safer environment but the damage is done,then there are those that come to school, which should be a safe place but then go home to the person/persons that are as big of a mess that they have turned the child into. We try our best but some go home and all is undone, heartbreaking.
Hahaha I'm entering my third year of teaching n still have classroom management issues! Just last week I thought I had them but then this week my lesson plans totally flew out the window just coz of their behaviour in class 🤣 very frustrating but like you said, everyday is a new day💪 Keep up the great work ❤️
Right now I'm a paraprofessional trying to pass those tests to get certified. It's been only 7 months and im already having doubts 😥. Im not even the teacher, however, i get disrespected by ...not only students but teachers as well!! I wasted so much money but i dont want to give up but im starting to think this isn't for me.

I really appreciated your video, Maya. Often we are the only adult in the room and it can be an isolating job. When I was in my first year of teaching, I had no idea how challenging teaching truly was and I felt incompetent. It definitely helped when I realized I was far from alone. I so relate to everything you mentioned! As for feeling not dedicated enough, I go to school early in the morning and often leave past 6, but honestly, it is because I need to do it to survive. I really admire the teachers who have figured out how to have a better work-life balance and yet still be fantastic teachers. It is important to have time to recharge so that you can be the best you can be for the kids. :) I'm working on it!

You seem to have a sensitivity that would make kids comfortable around you, and to be honest, I really like your personality! Teaching is one of the hardest professions out there, and I applaud you for sharing your vulnerabilities in this video. I feel very similar in my own life - like I'm just not good enough in what I do. But maybe we're better than we think? And most definitely stronger than we think.

I’m actually starting my student teaching or clinical teaching next week! Ahhh! Classroom management really is everything, but I'm sure your mentor teacher will walk you through what she likes to implement, and then you can also see what works for you! Let me know if you need any advice :) I learned the most from my student teaching experience!
Classroom management is definitely a challenge- however, I find the most difficult challenge for me is the additional documentation.
I love my kids SO much. I would walk through fire for them. It’s not them; it’s the way the government is allowing/mandating schools to be run. We have to choose between paperwork and teaching a good deal of the time and what breaks my heart is knowing I can only give 60% of myself to them on one day because I have to save the rest for non-teaching fillers. 😔

I just wanted to say, with respect to your first comment about feeling bad going home at the end of the day: this is a thing in all professions. I'm an attorney for a nonprofit, and I don't make as much money as you might assume an attorney does. For that and other reasons, I really prioritize leaving at the end of the business day and not staying late or working on the weekends. This is self-care, and not something to be ashamed of. People might look at you sideways about it for a little bit, but if you're gunning hard during work hours and getting everything done that you need to, it's a-ok. Chin up, girl. You're doing great.

My fear is that I won’t know material. Do you prep in the summer before entering the year? Like how do you go from second grade to fifth for example.

There are always some students that are checked out and it's usually nothing to do about it. Never feel bad about that because the problem is not you, it's something lacking in their lives at home.
I love this. I am currently in my practicum and every example you gave makes perfect sense. Oh the struggles, but the good just always seems to always make the bad things seem small. Reminds me a lot of being a parent and the day to day with my own kids.

I've been teaching students from 2 to 6 years old everyday since January. I thought it was just me that felt all of those weird feelings hahah you never feel good enough, valued enough, going to work can be a torture sometimes, but if you can't go for whatever reason you worry and think about your students all day, sometimes you hate planning, sometimes you wanna take your time and plan everything the best you can hahah sometimes your planned classes suck and some other times you improvise something that totally works, that makes you eternally anxious about classes. But take it all as a learning process and remember that as long as you're learning and trying to get better you're already a good teacher for that reason, respecting, caring and wanting the best for students is what makes good teachers

School is challenging at times regardless if your are teacher or student but here you are handling things in your classes and in your classroom like a champ .
When you are pushed you set the student to the side and conversate with them and settle the issue with them and move forward
but back when I was an autistic student in elementary school My Main Teachers had a paddle and when My Main Teacher was pushed we the students were taken out in the hall with the teacher's assistants watching and we were turned against the wall outside of the classroom and they hit us 3 times with a paddle .
This is only stating my experiences in elementary school . I grew and had a very negative view towards school back in those days and
I would have rather had a teacher like you who would have slowed me down in my tracks and helped me through those times that I made a Disney Character Impression , or drew a Disney Cartoon or experience at Walt Disney World , etc . to try to destress myself or I got frustrated over a math problem or something in my morning work that included what we call board work where we copied everything that the teacher wrote on the chalk board
including the assignments that the teacher wrote on the chalk board and I got so overwhelmed that I felt like sleeping in class and My Teachers would get frustrated with me and they would come to my desk and shout at me and I outburst a bit in response because they hit me in the behind 3 times with a paddle .
Your students are lucky to have you as their teacher and here is a tip for you based on my experiences with My Teachers that were like in schools that were higher than elementary school that did not paddle . Wait until the academic pressure is off and the students are more free and it is almost the end of the school year
and the students have the space to reflect on things and then they recognize how good that they had it with you and they may not be able to tell you due to being separated from you but the fruits of your labor does wind up paying off for them in the end .

I am outside school math tutor. I am training and had the chance to teach the kids 3-5 at a time. So HARD!!! Patience needed and keeping their focus back at work. But when I see them use the things I taught I feel like they will use it in their life and I felt amazed at that.
