Are You Using This Compression Trick? - Upwards Compression Tutorial

  • What is upwards compression? It's a relatively unknown trick you might be missing from your mixing and mastering tool kit. In this video, I introduce upwards compression and share some free plugins to help you use this technique.
    It's good for:
Boosting the quiet parts of an audio signal without squashing the punchy transients.
Bringing more "room" or "ambience" forward in recordings.
Reducing the dynamic range of an audio signal.
Here are some of the videos I mentioned and some other links which help the channel:

Upwards compression is not the same as expansion. I cover this at the end of the video but I will likely make a further video to clear this topic up. It’s clear that many have been taught expansion and compression wrong, as they are almost the opposite of each other.
Remember that this can be used on vocals, drums, synths etc. Try it out and hear the results! Thanks for watching :)

Would it be good to consider Waves' f6 dynamic eq as a sort of multiband compression? To be honest, especially with its decent sale price and overall ease of use, it's become one of my favorite plugins to use for multiple purposes including mid-side eq-ing

Without knowing what I was doing, I used upward compression in a live church setting today. Lesson learned in the mix: it was easier to balance vocals to music tracks, but I had to watch out for gain jumps thanks to the higher sensitivity to feedback in the room. Thanks for helping me to understand why it worked AND why it’s a tricky beast in a live enclosed setting.

My understanding of the DC1A3 is that the Negative button introduces a negative compression ratio. This is used for pumping effects but it's not upwards compression. A similar feature is found on Elysia's mpressor. There are actually very few compressors that allow upwards compression - the Flux compressors are one example but they call it "DeExpansion".

These are essentially the two main features of Boost by UrsaDSP. The focus control on that is an upwards limiter and the emphasis control is a transient processor / enhancer.
Using a proper lookahead upward limiter and transient processor is a great alternative to traditional downward limiters if you want to control the volume and the character separately.

I like to use parallel compression on my percussion as a way to do upward compression. Put heavy downward compression on one channel with a super high ratio and no compression on the other channel (ok technically you still put a compression plugin on it so the latency matches between channels but just leave the threshold at 0 dB so nothing gets compressed) and then mix the volume levels to find the best sound.

hey, I think that you use Neutron compressor as an upward expander and not as an upward compressor...
btw, the basic use of an upward expander is to increase dynamic above threshold (invert of a classic downward compressor).
But upward compressor makes everything BELOW the threshold become louder.
So the quieter parts are levelled up with an upward comp.
It could be used to raise the ambience.
Or with a range set, only raise the quiet syllables of a vocal, but not the back ground noise...
