what a beautiful plane, over 60 years old and it still looks bad ass today...i can only imagine just how hot this baby was in the early 50's...and the ego boost it gave those who flew it.

My family has a few photos of my dad standing next to the F86 Sabre that he flew and we have a photo of him climbing into the cockpit. He was an Air Force Pilot who trained in the 1950's and served in Vietnam also. He mostly reconnaissance missions and was a commander at 2 bases in Thailand. I love the sound of fighter jets starting up and going over when they break the sound barrier and the flames shoot out the back. I was a military kid and love air shows and the F15 and F16's give me goosebumps to hear and watch.

Hi Debra- I know a long time has passed but giving it a try. I also have a couple of photo scans of my dad climbing into an F86 cockpit in the 50’s during the Korean war. Your description matched my dad's. I have a great scan of his squadron with an F86 in the background. Maybe your dad is also in the squadron picture. I can share it with you if interested.

"So what are your requirements for this new plane?"
"I need an engine and some guns."
"Okay...um... how about maybe... some wings... and a place for the pilot to sit?"
"Fine, whatever, just don't go crazy with those last two."

When I was stationed at NAS Key West in the 1970's a F-86 landed on its way to I think, the Honduran Air Force after being overhauled. I Visited with the pilot for a bit and he told me to go ahead and climb into the cockpit. It was a pretty tight fit but I really enjoyed getting to spend some time it a Saber Jet. It was a very cool aircraft!

Daddy was a fighter pilot during WWII and Korea, and finished out his USAF career stateside during the Vietnam war. He was also a test pilot and performed at air shows (not a member of the Thunderbirds, but could do every stunt they did). He passed along his love of flying to me, and as time goes by, my passion for it grows. This video makes my heart swell and puts a lump in my throat, remembering him climbing into the cockpit and firing it up. I only regret I didn’t learn to fly while he was alive. RIP, Daddy; thank you for serving.

Hey! That's the 334th out of Korea!! My dad was a Staff Sargent, and work on one plane for years!!! I remember how his face would light up when he would talk about being aloud to taxi it every now and then. Great memories. Farm boy. I'll get the serial number, and pilots name. He was an ace, and always asked dad if he could get just a bit more power lol. Something to do with the angle of the fins inside the engine. ( as a guess i want to say last name Fernandez )

Farhan Malik , vintage vampires were no match for the sabers
      , agreed.
But against the gnats it was a different story. One look at the gnats the Sabres would show their asses and run. Lol.
So how do you suppose the world knows them by the phrase 'Saber Killers'?

Great Video! Does anyone know the background or history of the boxing rooster on the side of the plane? I just finished the book “The Flying Tigers” and on page 13 there is a reference to the 19th Fighter Squadron the “Fighting Cocks”. The timeframe was around 1932 and the location was Luke Field on Ford Island next to Pearl Harbor. Is it possible the marking origination goes back that far?

Interesting to contrast the start up sequence and sound with an Australian CA-27 Sabre with a Rolls-Royce Avon engine at about 1.00 on ua-cam.com/video/UpB8kpxQnWM/v-deo.html Armament buffs will note the CA-27 has a 30mm Aden cannon on each side of the nose instead of -50 cal. It also normally carried two sidewinders for air to air missions.

    • @chrisnizer5702

The entire panel moves so it's more of a stabliator, combination stabilizer and elevator in one control surface. Makes the aircraft more manuverable.
