If anything his designation as lancer should not have just been his use of the twin spear pf the rose, but rather that he was the first spear of the fianna in general. This would grant him access to his spears and the twin blades of fury.

Funny how the Lancer form gets people killed but Diarmuid in saber is most likely better, just like Caster Cu, and just like how Medusa has better luck in her Lily Lancer, Avenger Composite Form of Gorgon unlike the luck of her Rider form in Fate and UBW routes and to some extent in Heaven's Feel but thankfully not in FGO for the most part looking at Stheno and Euryale.
