This is not a dictator power but 80% of their people voted for it because they do not want new government as life has been smooth. There's only 1 opposition managed to lead a small part of the land.
To be honest in Singapore there’s no ‘fixed’ accent. You have those who speak more ‘proper’ sounding English, you have those who speak English with some smatterings of Chinese or Malay of Indian accents. For eg the ah bengs speak very differently, or perhaps Malays in Singapore who speak English, you also have Singaporean Indians who speak differently. And within the various races you have various accent sub-types.
@@jeems2066 yeah ofc, accents differ everywhere in every country. It's just this specific accent is also shared by my two friends and it sounds so familiar yet so foreign to me. I was really surprised the first time I heard them speak english, I had no idea it's even a commonly spoken language there.
Yeah as an Englishman I quite like the Singaporean accent, it has a proper business/corporate tone to it. Although there are definitely a variety of accents as when I visited earlier this year I had to ask a couple of locals to repeat what they said lol.
@@KuroiGW2 Yes you get it! Everyone does kind speak differently, some are not good in English but better in Mandarin so may hear a smattering of a Singaporean-Chinese/Malaysian-Chinese accented English which even then can have varying degrees
I'm a Singaporean and I hope to clear up some misconception that people have in our country. (1) We are ruled by a dictator (Lee Kuan Yew and his family). We just had an extremely strong ruling party and people were generally satisfied with their performance. As a matter of fact, the opposition party has been gradually gaining grounds over the years, this wouldn't have happened if it is a dictatorship. (2) We have no freedom of press. The history is that Singapore banned foreign press from publishing in Singapore (very similar to how US is controlling Tik Tok now), and Lee Kuan Yew pissed off many foreign press members when he started to sue them for slander (and winning court cases). Yes we do censor our media, but it is way better than US where national TVs are spouting lies (e.g. NBC on republicans and fox on demoncrats), and destablizing the whole country. My biased opinion. (3) We are inhuman with our criminal punishments. We have death penalties and we cane people. Well, this is largely true. In our defence, death penalties were extremely effective in controlling major vices such as drug trafficking. In my biased opinion, death penalty is way better than failed rehabilitation where drug abusers go in/out of facilities. For canning, it is simply a way to discourage people from committing crimes. And 99.9999% of the people who abide by laws or commit only petty crimes do not have to deal with it at all. If you ask Singaporeans who are primarily affected by these "inhuman" laws, most of us would say that we agree to them. Because it is just a fact that it helped keep our streets clean.
@@TheDeathLove wrong. strong GDP growth in the ensuing two decades resulted in buoyant operating surpluses which were used to fund development spending.
This is the funny thing from foreigners. They like to get their premium water from premium place that meant to earn their money. We local don’t buy $20 water. Local supermarkets sell $0.30. It’s actually quite stupid to buy $20 water because u can have buffet with that money. Same goes to food.
I hate how they are praising Singapore government like they had something to do with the wealth. It's the private sector not the government that created all the wealth. I guess they do deserve some credit because they created a profitable environment for entrepreneurs.
well yeah the government allowed it to happen. ofc it's gonna get the praise, especially when you compare it to the rest of the world and how fucked up and corrupted they can be.
