  • Welcome to south east Asia's smallest country, Singapore. One of the biggest surprises of all the countries we have visited so far, Singapore is a hugely impressive city state. From the efficiency of the transportation, to the cleanliness of its streets. From the cultural diversity to the incredible food on offer. This country made a lasting impression on us in the short time we had there. We can't wait to go back already. Thank you for having us, Singapore 🇸🇬

You guys went to MacRitchie Reservoir's Tree Top Walk on your FIRST day in Singapore??? Mad respect to you!! Indeed it's a 'hidden' gem that no tourist would normally visit. You just discovered the tropical side of Singapore with it's (nearly) unspoilt rainforest, after all we're just 1 degree above the equator.

No one cares if u chew gum. I think that’s a big misconception about singapore. Yes we have many rules but it’s not like we feel stifled or feel like there is someone watching us all the time. We ain’t North Korea. It’s just normal daily life for us and most of us don’t really care if someone else chews or doesn’t chews gum.

I'm honestly impressed that you guys hit the forest on the first day because most tourists stay in the city area. Our nature is a major plus for us because we actually have a lot of natural diversity despite our size. Other than McRitchie the other location you can hit up is sungei buloh wetland reserve. It's a nice mangrove forest with crabs, birds, crocodiles (yes), fish and other lovely wildlife. If you come at the right times you can also see migratory birds because Singapore is a major stopover point for birds migrating from Eurasia to australia

I go to Sing frequently as my wife is from there and still has aunts, uncles and cousins there. We typically stay between 4 and 8 days and we find that’s about the limit. You have to remember that these are the main activities for most Singaporeans:
    1. Eating
    2. Talking about eating
    3. Shopping
    4. Going to travel agencies to find deals for traveling outside of Singapore
We stay near Clarke Quay. It’s well situated for Chinatown as well as being easy walking distance to the Merlion and Bugis. Two MRT lines are quite near and many major bus lines converge here.
Besides family, we enjoy hiking and there are quite a few nice hiking areas…..as long as you go early. Bukit Timah, the Southern Ridges and MacRitchie Reservoir are all great hikes early in the day. We like heading out to Katong at least once each trip. Good Laksa at Roxy Square and good Nyonya goodies to eat across the street. We try to avoid Orchard Road, as it’s pretty much all high end stuff, though the basement at Takashimaya (sp?) reminds one of department stores in Japan. When we shop,it’s at neighborhood malls. Eating is generally at hawker centers like Old Airport, Hong Lim and Chomp Chomp.
We don’t do much in the way of traditional tourist stuff, but the zoo is supposed to be fantastic, both day and night. Gardens by the Bay is a great place, though the price of the attractions is a little steep. Sentosa has a casino and Universal Studios.
So, is Singapore worth a stay? Yes it is.

Great to see something other than the usual tourist places. Plenty of walks and wildlife around Singapore. Kudos on taking one in on the first day. A majority of the land surface in Singapore is green - enjoy it on future visits. Usually totally missed out by visiting tourists. Expensive pint, yes, but you should have ordered a couple of large bottles of Tiger beer in a local place. Eat and drink local and Singapore is not expensive. World class public transport is cheap too. Accommodation and private cars are the expensive stuff. I moved from UK to live permanently in Singapore 30 years ago. Best thing I have ever done. Fabulous place.

Food: Chicken rice, fish soup), Gardens by the Bay/Marina Bay Sands (try to visit Cloud Forest and Flower Dome), Katong area (especially junction of Joo Chiat Road/Koon Seng Road for Peranakan houses. You can also eat a famous laksa called 328 LAKSA), Orchard Road, Golden Mile Hawker Centre (famous for Cha Kway Teow), Merlion Park and if you are adventurous, go to the suburban e.g. Bedok MRT (there is a shopping mall and you can explore Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre + surrounding shops).

Most tourists (and locals) dont realise that the "Supertrees" are not just metal structures to hang lights on.... they are actually giant solar collectors that collect energy in the daytime for the park....hence the awards the park won for sustainability. Next time you are there, read the giant stickers at the Supertrees, they will explain this.

@@adamandyaz May I suggest that next time when u come back, try to know more about the real Singapore than from any biased news.
Half populations living in Singapore are foreigners, on average they do live & work in sg for 10-20 yrs, some even 30 yrs or more. Nobody forces them to work here. They chose to live in sg cos they see the real beauty of SG.
Yes we do have tough laws but they are mostly for violent crimes esp murder, kidnapping & hard drugs. Even for drugs, u would have to carry a certain “weight” for “sale” then death penalty could kick in. Many not realise that Sg still have some drug issue, I used to work in hospital , often seen many drug addicts checking in daily. We often see news on how much drugs CNB dept have raided. After all sg is a super globalised country with hundreds of diff nationalities living in here, should we not have tough laws we would end up like another drug city in USA or Europe.
Another misconception want to highlight is that the foreign media in the west like to portray that sg is the “only” asia country with death penalty. In fact is not true, all asia countries (incl Japan, S. Korea, taiwan, china etc) have same capital punishment; middle eastern Muslim countries are even harsher on their crimes. I noticed the west often like to exaggerate & make it sound like SG is the only asia country with death penalty.😢

You may want to explore Pulau Ubin, but it is a little inaccessible (or time consuming to get there. But if you do, Changi Village is quite rustic (compared to the other Changi - Jewel). And if your budget permits, check out the Zoos. Yes, plural. There is the Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari, River Wonders, and Bird Paradise (? they recently moved and rebranded themselves). The Pandas are at River Wonders.

If you couple like walks through nature and stuff, then you might want to visit Pulau Ubin. It's an island that is an extension of Singapore. You need to take a ferry from the Changi Jetty to get there. It is mostly rainforest, mangrove swamps and beaches there. You can camp at the beach there, if you brought a tent. I camped there during my Secondary School days as a Boy Scout some 20+ years ago. We learned to set up our tents. Then we started our own fires and then were cooking our instant noodles in our own mess tins over the fire. I cheated abit by bringing some solid fuel instead of using the tinder, sticks and leaves we were supposed to find. Some of my friends even brought marshmallows. Remember to bring insect repellent though, or at least the mosquito patches to keep them away.
Looking back now, pretty fun times it was indeed.

Some fun facts for your kind consideration
Fun Fact 1: Local Singaporeans would have consumed the food featured at 6:01 with a fork and a spoon. The fork was mostly used to push the food into the spoon, before lifting the spoon of food into our mouths. I am not too sure but some people even eat with their bare hands. But do note that if you are going to eat a plate of rice with dishes with your bare hands, be sure to use only your right hand. The left hand is deemed as the unclean hand and should never touch the food.
Fun Fact 2: Knives are rarely found at stalls that have rice as the base. Exceptions would be stalls that sell Western Food. For stalls that sell rice with accompanying dishes where large pieces of meat are involved, we would use the spoon as a knife to slice through the meat. While it might seem odd to you, it is actually commonly done in Singapore and it works perfectly. But when bone-in meat is involved and using the spoon as a knife doesn't work, that's when using your bare hands is required.

Johor Bahru (in Malaysia) is commonly known as 'JB'. Many Malaysians who live in JB cross the bridge into Singapore each day to work. Singapore is indeed a nice, clean and safe place. Marina Bay is an absolute highlight and features many bars, restaurants and hotels. So is the Boat Quay on the Singapore River.

The term market or Pa Sat in Lau Pa Sat actually comes from the word Bazaar which in turns influence the Malay word for market which is 'Pasar' (or it could be the other way round) and the Chinese term Ba Sha (Pa Sat is a Chinese Hokkien dialect pronunciation). So Bazaar, Pasar, Pa Sat which all mean the same thing, is just one example of the multi-lingual and multi-racial influence in Singaporean society. For example, the term Pa Sat in Chinese does not exist in China/Taiwan and is only uniquely used by Chinese in Singapore/Malaysia. Several other similar terms such as 'Go Astern' which came from British English has morphed into the word 'Gostan', commonly used here.

    • @superlynnie
      @superlynnie 5 місяців тому

"Ba sha" and pat sat are basically the words adopted by the local hokkien, which then formed part of Singlish. It's essentially how the creole language is formed.
Basha is being passed out in singapore chinese textbooks and replaced with the proper Chinese word "caishichang". You see it less and less in local mediaas week. It's mostly being used informally now as opposed to 20 years ago.

As the other people mentioned, you can go to many other nature reserves in Singapore. Maybe you can even take a ferry out to Pulau Ubin which is a small island for hiking. There’s seafood restaurants there but remember to bring adequate water and take note of the ferry timing. The Changi Point Ferry Terminal also has an excellent food centre nearby (Changi Village Food Centre) with amazing food. Cheers!

It is actually not illegal to chew gum in Singapore. It was the import and sale which fyi, has been lifted since 2004. Why people think it is illegal was actually due to a smear campaign by the US to force/shame Singapore into continuing to import of gum from them

I have been to Singapore 3 times and Malaysia 6 times. I have been to Johor Bahru to get to Singapore on one of the trips - the process was quite easy.
They were strict on chewing gum but the city is so clean.and beautiful. You can easily do the main tours in 2/3 days without fuss but I did use the metro quite a bit to get to various places

I have no idea who started this fake news that we can’t chew gums in Singapore😵‍💫. For so many years we been explaining to ppl that many of u have been mistaken on the rule.(I suspect the creator been told by the clueless Malaysians before they came into Singapore)😂In fact the rule has never been changed, u can chew gums in Singapore, it’s only the SALE of gums is banned.
I noticed sometimes ppl just copy & paste news online even when they aren’t familiar or even sure about the REAL situation. I can only conclude why ppl have mistaken is due to the short form of English writing on the rule: “no chewing gum”. So when anyone sees this esp those who know vy little on English language would somehow assume that we are not allowed to chew gums😅..So I would like to clarify this to everyone again that U are still allowed to bring in gums from overseas for PERSONAL consumption only, just no sale on that,ok?🥰❤❤
That means to say If u bring in “many” big cartons of gums in, then of course that would attract the attention at the custom & the officer might assume u’re bringing in that many to sell them🙃If u get caught bringing too many gums in then they might impose a fine of NO MORE than SGD $2000 & might confiscate ur “stock” of gums😆🤭

Most foreigners has the misconception that it is illegal to be seen with chewing gum in Singapore😂I often brought over gum for friends and colleagues (not a lot of cause). You are not allowed to sell it (unless for medical reasons via the pharmacies) but you can consume.

Chewing gum is not completely banned in Singapore, but its sale and import are tightly regulated. Singapore implemented strict regulations on chewing gum in the 1990s due to issues related to gum litter and vandalism. The government imposed a ban on the sale of chewing gum for several years, but these restrictions were relaxed over time. Chewing gum with therapeutic or dental benefits is allowed, but it needs to be purchased from a registered pharmacy and is subject to certain restrictions. However, the sale of regular chewing gum is not allowed. You can bring in chewing gum for your personal consumption but importing large quantities may raise questions at the customs as you might be deemed to be selling them in Singapore. So, in short, you can consumed chewing gum brought in by you for your own personal consumption.

For those who complain n don’t like living here - they should migrate to other countries where it’s cheaper - but no air con buses or mrt, dusty roads, take longest time to get anything fixed etc. Every country has its pros n cons.

its funny that people always complaint that Singapore is so small there is nothing to do and required to travel outside. i see you going to MacR for the treetop walk kudos to that! you can find many activities in Singapore, but if you arent active, every country are the same.. shopping, eating, talking about eating, etc.
In your next trip you can add wind surfing at east coast, kayaking around pulau ubin, Bukit timah to MacRichie hike (10km to 25km walk), hot spring at Sembawang. Singapore is not all about shopping and eating expensive like some dumb neighbors.

Ladies lose body heat faster than guys do (lower mass to surface area ratio). Give it a few weeks and you'd be wearing a cardigan on windier days there.
Also, the whole 'police-state' perception is way out of proportion. They actually have fewer police officers per capita than New Zealand (where I currently live) and probably the UK too (I need to double-check that). I've lived im Singapore as a brown minority person and have nevee been stopped by the cops; I get stopped in Wellington almost every time I wear my flatpack.
Ah well, I think I'd rather be thought of as strict but actually have fewer police, people arrested/serving a sentence and safer streets, than be seen as more 'liberal' bur actually worse off on all those outcomes.
