Today I'm painting a beginner friendly looset landscape using a limited palette, indigo, paynes grey, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. The idea is to try to let go and paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for plenty of light and darks giving subtle drama, and then work with whatever the wash gives me to build up the scene. It looks challenging, but it is a simple and exciting process that will probably take a bit of practice, but is really useful for getting beginners used to the way water and paint acn flow on the page, and using rich paint to obtain balanced tonal values with plenty of darks.
I'm using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes including a large goat hair calligraphy brush and a small calligraphy brush that I found cheap on eBay a couple of years ago, a Pro Arte Ron Ranson large hake brush, a 3/4" synthetic flat, but use whichever brushes you have. - Розваги
May I just say, generally, what an utter inspiration you are. My notifications are pinged regularly with yet another painting upload from you, which never cease to catch my eye and make me want to grab my brushes. Your painting style combined with your gentle and honest teaching skills are hugely encouraging, and has made your channel my #1 go-to for frankly endless inspiration and ideas.
I really hope your channels here and elsewhere continue to go from strength to strength, and that we will be able to enjoy your painting journey with you for many years to come.
It's amazing to see the magic of water and pigments playing with each other and the way Lois facilitates them with her skill, talent and experience to create something wonderful!
Lois, I want to thank you for all your videos. In February 2021 I spent 7 months in hospital and for the want of something to do, I took up watercolour painting, having not painted before, I went on the Webb looking for directions. It was then I found you. I learnt a lot from you, so much so that I have now painted over 160 dogs and cats, but mostly dogs for people who send me requests, for me to paint their pets. I do not charge them, but I do sometimes score a bottle of Shiraz.
I was 81 when I started, but that matters little and as I have become quite proficient at painting these pets. I can only say a very big, “ thank you Lois”.

Thanks so much Warren! 😊
Wow go you that's amazing I'm nervous of trying watercolour painting, but will have a go 1 day :)
I enjoy this style too.
Lois, I've been going back through your videos to watch how you spontaneously create the most amazing skies, and usually using a limited palette. This is one of my favorites that you've done. Just gorgeous!
Hi Lois, very beautiful and great sky and atmosphere.....you are an amazing Watercolourist.......Cheers, Laurence.
Thanks so much for your kind words Laurence, 🎨💐
Lovely and very soft drawing, really great work,, Like it,,Love it,,,,,,,,,,Best wishes to you always my favorite friend!!! Greetings from a new friend !!!
Thank you for another beautiful video. It's so striking how the final small details bring the painting to life .
Thanks Gayane, I think half the battle with loose painting is keeping most of it really loose then adding just enough detail to pull it together 🎨💐
Fascinating how you play with the paint so loosely and create beautiful paintings...
What a beautiful painting ! The beautiful sky, the foliage and the tree shorn of its leaves have together made the desolate house shine. Excellent work👏👏👏
Gorgeous! I can’t wait to try this one. I love the effect you got with the scratches in the foreground. I thought the sky would be too dark but it’s beautiful.
I lov❤e semi abstract watercolour art and you are very gifted. Thanks, I will try this one even though it looks more advanced.
Great - good explanation of what you are doing at each stage which really aids learning
Great video loaded with information i appreciate hearing as a beginner artist. Thank you, very inspiring.
love your teaching Lois! Thank you for sharing your art! So far I only managed one satisfactory tutorial. But it is so much fun trying! I play with low funds and love the way you present alternatives .Today I tried using a make up brush for the wash. Got a good result!
Thank you Lois! You never cease to amaze and each of your tutorials is interesting and clear. Will have a go🧡🤎🤍
Thank you for the tutorial. I had a lot of fun loosening up with this and will take away some good stuff.

This is so cool. Really beautiful detailing here.
I love it! And your style of painting!
Wow, that's really beautiful. I'm comfortable with oil and acrylic, but water colors intimidate me.
Might have to give this one a shot.

😍
Magnifique aquarelle, comme toujours Lois! Avez vous ajouté des cheminées sur le toit ou est-ce moi qui s’imagine voit cela? Grand merci
Bom muito bom
👍👍
Thanks! 😊
Marvel! Thanks a lot
Why is it abstract, what makes it abstract? It's clearly a house on a wintry day. Love it BTW
Please do a tutorial focused simply on the trees. I’ve watched several of your videos and made a try. My branches/trunks never look so natural as yours. How do you do the trees?
I already have a lot of videos where I paint trees here on my UA-cam channel and more on Patreon. The only way to learn to paint more realistic trees is to keep practicing 🎨
Use a rigger brush and wiggle it as you brush the paint on. It works for me, hope that it works for you too!
It’s not actually in the exact middle so it looks like a quite well done composition!
I'm a very late starter to painting of any type and your tutorials are my favourite by far, where did you get your mister from?( it seems much better than the one I have)

Beautiful as always. How do you choose colors to mix together?
Thanks Sue, I only have a small selection of colours, as I only need a few, and simply select a few that I like each time. Too many colours causes confusion and can lead to a lack of harmony 😊
